Voting open in Boys & Girls Clubs’ Black History Month art contest
Voting is underway in UScellular’s fifth annual Black History Month Art Contest with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley. The public can see and vote for their favorite piece of original art here. Scroll down to Iowa, then click on “Boys & Girls Club of the Mississippi Valley.”
The top three pieces with the most votes will be announced on February 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Davenport Club, 1702 W. Main Street in Davenport. The first place winner will receive a $250 gift card, the second place winner will receive a $150 gift card and the third place will receive a $100 gift card.
The finalists range in age from seven to 12 years old. Boys & Girls Club members created original pieces of art that represent influential Black STEM icons. These included historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering and math.
The portraits include Stephon Alexander, Sarah E. Goode, Percy Julian, Jerry Lawson, Marie Maynard Daly, Bruce Ovbiagele and George Washington Carver. Finalists were chosen by Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley representatives and local UScellular management based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Voting is open until February 15 and anyone age 18 or older can vote.
The top three first-place submissions with the most votes in the U.S. will also be named national winners and receive an additional $250, bringing the total winnings to $500. Their home Club also receives a $1,500 donation.
Artwork by the finalists is digitally displayed at three UScellular locations in the Quad Cities; 351 W. Kimberly Road and 2910 E. 53rd Street in Davenport and 3919 38th Street in Moline.
