One Piece’s ‘Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack’ easter egg is hidden in a single frame

By Robert King

The One Piece animators hid a special ‘Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack’ easter egg in just one single frame of episode 1067 this week.

The easter egg was so well hidden that it only appears for a single frame, but that’s more than enough for avid One Piece fans-turned-detectives to find!

One Piece’s ‘Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack’ single-frame easter egg

One Piece episode 1067 ‘To the New Era! Settled! The Determination of the Brats’ premiered around the world via Crunchyroll on Sunday, July 2 and within just a few hours, fans of the iconic anime had spotted a hidden easter egg.

At exactly 10 minutes and 23 seconds into the episode, just as Eustass ‘Captain’ Kid and Trafalgar Law make their powerful attacks against Big Mom; you can see the words “Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack” in the fire.

These words only appear for just a single frame and can be easily missed if you weren’t watching closely; however, not many easter eggs slip past the One Piece community these days.

The term ‘Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack’ is a variation of the classic ‘Smoking on that X pack’ snowclone i.e., a type of internet slang phrasal template, used to disrespect someone who has recently died, or is about to be killed.

In the latest One Piece episode, Big Mom is cast down into a fiery tomb by both Kid and Law; which is why the ‘Smokin on Dat Big Mom Pack’ was included for a split-second, oh the disrespect is too real.

According to Know Your Meme, “The phrase is an evolution of “smoking that opp pack,” a less-incriminating way of saying you’re killing your opposers, which began in the Chicago drill rap scene, with an “opp” being an opposer, “smoking” someone meaning to kill them and a “pack” being the body.”

“The phrase started growing in popularity online around 2018 as a disrespectful reaction to the death, cancelation or incarceration of newsworthy figures.”

It’s safe to say that the One Piece fans who have picked up on this easter egg enjoyed this nod to internet culture, especially since the phrase has been used in various franchise-related memes for the past few years.

Replies to a Twitter post about the easter egg included “True peak”, “Even the animators are making fun of Big Mom”, “Ain’t no way this is real”, and “The disrespect on big momma.”

The One Piece community is now set to experience some of the most important months in the franchise’s history, with the original manga resuming publication, Gear 5 debuting in the anime, and the premiere of Netflix’s live-action adaptation on August 31.
