Before you start downloading other things from the repository, keep that in mind.

To start, click on the settings icon in the main menu within Kodi. It’s the little gear towards the top. Then, click “System.” On the resulting menu locate and click “Add-ons.” Look for an option to toggle on “Unknown sources” and allow outside repositories to be installed.

Next, back out to the main settings menu. Pick the file manager, and “Add Source.” Type the web address as the source.

Give it a name, and press “OK” to save the source.

Return to the Kodi main menu. Click the “Add-ons” tab. Locate the open box icon towards the top of the menu and click it. Then, choose “Install from zip file” within the menu.

Find the name that you gave to your SuperRepo source. Find your version of Kodi, and navigate through “repositories” and “superrepo.” Find the latest zip in the list and install it.

Install Chrome Launcher

Go back to the menu you arrived at from clicking the box icon under the Add-ons tab. Pick the option to install from repository. Choose SuperRepo. You’ll see a huge list of repositories available through SuperRepo, broken down by category. Choose the “Programs” repository and install it.

Return to the main add-ons menu. Click on the “Download” tab. From there find the program add-ons from the menu. The list of program add-ons just got a whole lot longer, but it’s still alphabetical. Scroll down to the Chrome Launcher and install it.

Set Up a Custom Launcher

You’re ready to start using the Chrome Launcher. Head back to the main add-ons menu. Navigate to “My add-ons,” then “Program add-ons.” When should see Chrome Launcher there, launch it.

You’ll see three options waiting for you. Two of them are ready-made launchers for Vimeo and YouTube. You can try either one if you like. Alt + F4 gets you out of the Chrome window.

The final option allows you to make your own launcher. Try it out. Start by giving your launcher a name that’ll appear in the menu. Next, tell it the exact web address to open. The setup will ask you two more questions about how you want Chrome to run. The defaults are fine.

After you have your launcher set up, open it. Your new launcher will take you directly to the site you requested. If you plan on using this technique on Linux or another configuration that isn’t supported, you may need to use the user agent switcher plugin to make it look like you’re on Windows. It will work in nearly all cases.

Congrats! You’re ready to start using all your favorite streaming services directly through Kodi. Keep in mind that all of these pieces constantly update and change. Keep everything up to date to ensure that things keep running smoothly. That includes updating your spoofed user agent, if you’re using one.

The Internet has become a central part of the computer experience. Before the Web caught fire in the late 1990s, home computing was largely a singular experience. Computer users created documents on a PC and saved those files to a hard or floppy disk, and maybe worked within a local area network at the office. File sharing usually meant walking a disk to another machine.

These days, computing is a Web-centric experience, and you perform many of your Internet tasks through software called a Web browser. That browser, which may be a program such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, helps you retrieve information from the Internet multiple times per day, integrate it with other online documents and share data galore with people all over the planet. Google is trying to reshape the computer experience by using its understanding of the Web to create the new Chrome operating system (OS).

Traditional operating systems, such as Windows, require a lot of hard drive space and demand some work on your part. You have to install the programs you want individually, manage OS and security updates and manage device drivers, too.

Google’s Chrome OS aims to overhaul that paradigm. With Chrome, the browser actually is the OS — in this case, the Chrome OS builds on the Google browser of the same name. In total, the Chrome OS is built on an open-source version of Linux and integrated with the Chrome browser, a simple media player. and that’s it.

Google embraced the concept of an ultra-simple, Web-centric OS in large part due to the huge recent success of netbooks. Netbooks are small laptop computers that are designed to let users access the Web, and not much more; they’re inexpensive and feature-limited hardware, and they aren’t built for high-powered applications like Photoshop, for example.

Unlike Windows, Chrome won’t be available as a download. It’ll be pre-installed by netbook manufacturers who adhere to Google’s hardware specifications. Chrome is designed to run best on solid-state storage systems as opposed to traditional spinning hard drives, in part because solid-state drives are less prone to failure, but also because they’re less spacious — remember, Google wants you to store your data online. And because the OS uses Web-based applications, you don’t need local storage for software, either.

It’s no accident that Google stresses the online aspects of Chrome. The entire Chrome project revolves around the cloud computing model. That fancy term simply means that all of your data and applications are stored online, in the “cloud,” so that you can access them from any computer, anywhere.

The company says this model will help it develop a better overall OS experience and focus on building an OS with improved speed, security and simplicity. By hacking out all of the non-Web related functions of a traditional OS, Google indicates these goals should be easier to achieve. And the company isn’t doing the design work alone. Because this is an open-source project (under the name Chromium OS), Google gets feedback from savvy software developers all over the world.

It’s important to remember that Google doesn’t intend for Chrome OS to be your primary computer’s operating system. Instead, the company sees a Chrome OS netbook as a secondary computer that you use once you’re done with the heavy-duty applications you use on a more powerful office computer.

Like most Google products, Chrome OS is free. That fact, along with the power of Google’s marketing and distribution, should grab your attention. Keep reading to see how Chrome might alter the landscape of computing as you know it.

You don’t have to be hard of hearing to use subtitles on videos. For example, you may be watching something late at night with the volume down low (you respectful rascal, you), or the speakers on your Chromebook may be less than stellar sounding (hello, Samsung Series 5 users) – not to mention, text translations are pretty vital when watching foreign-language TV shows or movies (hi, Anime fans!).

The default media player in Chrome OS doesn’t support subtitle files, commonly distributed in the .srt format, directly. But a new media player, available for free from the Chrome Web Store, enables caption playback on Chromebooks everywhere.

Subtitle Videoplayer

Subtitle Videoplayer is a simple HTML5-based media app for Chrome & Chrome OS. It works offline, and comes with basic video player functions like volume control, video scrubbing/seeking, and fullscreen.

But its core feature is support for .srt subtitle files, with support/options for:

• Local subtitle file (.srt only) loading
• Auto-download of matching subtitle files from OpenSubtitles.Org
• Set encoding
• Adjust size
• Adjust delay

All of these features are readily accessible from the main interface. There are no endless menus or preferences dialogs to wrestle with.

Opening a video in the app is done one of two ways:

• Click on the upward facing arrow in the lower left corner to open a file picker dialog, or
• Drag and drop a video file onto the app window

Loading subtitles is done in a similar manner:

• Click the ‘Closed Caption’ (CC) icon in the toolbar, followed by the first arrow icon to open a file picker; or
• Drag and drop a supported subtitle file on to the app window; or
• Drag and drop both the video and its subtitle file onto the app window

But what if you don’t have a subtitle file handy? Fear not, Subtitle Videoplayer comes with an ‘auto-download’ feature built in:

• Click the ‘Closed Caption’ (CC) icon in the toolbar, select the language of subtitle you need, followed by the second arrow icon to download subtitles

If more than one subtitle is available you’ll be able to switch between them by clicking the subtitle name and selecting another from the list that appears:

When Chrome OS first appeared, it was practically useless without an internet connection. Now, an offline Chromebook is no longer the functionless brick it once was because there are dozens of web apps with offline capabilities. Here’s everything you can do today on Chrome OS without online access.

Create and edit documents

As you might expect, Google is at the forefront of adding offline features to Chrome OS. Google Drive had offline support for a while, and it’s great to use. You can create, view and edit files, with changes automatically synced back to the cloud as soon as connection is restored.

You need to set this up ahead of time, though. From the main Google Drive interface, click on the cog icon on the right, then choose Settings. Tick the box next to the Offline heading and the sync starts with a pop-up notification. There are some limitations, but most Google Drive features are still available.

Search through and write emails

With Gmail Offline and its optimizer extension installed on your Chromebook, you can compose new emails and search through a cache of older ones, though obviously you can’t do any sending or receiving until you’re back online. First, select the Allow offline mail prompt to start downloading messages.

You can choose to sync a week, two weeks, or a month’s worth of emails using the simple settings pane, and all your labels and inbox categories are carried over as well. You can move, archive, and label messages using Gmail Offline too (these actions are synced to Gmail when connectivity returns).

Catch up on your reading

Pocket has an integrated offline mode available, which mean you can catch up on your read-it-later queue on your Chromebook without even a hint of WiFi. The syncing happens automatically when you launch the Chrome app , although it doesn’t work with videos for rather obvious reasons.

There’s no such offline functionality for Instapaper, unless you load up all the articles you want to read in separate tabs before you lose connectivity. Google Keep can work without the web, and syncing is done automatically. You can use either the Keep website or the Chrome app to get at your notes.

Play games

Plenty of Chrome OS games work offline. To find them, go to the Chrome Web Store , and choose Games, then Chrome Apps, then Runs Offline from the left-hand pane. Once you’ve installed the games of your choice, they’ll load up on Chrome OS with or without an available internet connection.

Cut The Rope is one of the best known offline-ready titles, while there are several versions of Solitaire available, and an awesome Free Rider HD Offline Editor to play around with too. Bear in mind that more complex games are going to use up more of your Chromebook’s local storage.

Edit photos

If you have photos stored locally on your Chromebook that need editing offline, then Pixlr Touch Up from Autodesk is one of the simplest options out there. There are plenty of other alternatives. Take a look at Polarr Photo Editor 3 or Piconion Photo Editor , for example, which come with more advanced features.

Open up Pixlr Touch Up and you can apply a range of quick fixes, from cropping to blurring, as well as a number of Instagram-style filters and effects. A text overlay tool is included in the app too. As yet, there’s no offline support for the powerful Google Photos , but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Google added it.

Play movies and music

You can open movie and music files from local storage, but there’s more than that. In the Google Play Movies app, for example, each of your purchased titles shows a small download button you can use to sync it for offline viewing later on (head to the settings page to configure the download quality).

Songist plays tracks from local storage and doesn’t need an internet connection to load or run. Just make sure you download the songs first. Google Play Music doesn’t have an offline mode at the time of writing, and nor does Spotify’s web player , but as we’ve mentioned there is a native player for local files.

We’ve all been there. You have one or two devices you primarily do your work on and just when you need that one file that you were dealing with earlier in the day, your device you have with you doesn’t have the file you need to finish the job. It’s happened to me on countless occasions and I’m honestly embarrassed to admit that I’ve even deleted locally stored files on multiple occasions with no way to ever get them back.

It’s a relic from an older era, I suppose: the need to work with local files. There’s still something in my Windows 98-laden brain that feels better about using and editing files that live on the device I have in front of my face, even if there’s a better and more productive way to go about it. After years with a Chromebook, I slip back in to the habit of downloading files and email attachments right to my Chromebook only to have to rummage through them all over again the next time I feel like changing Chrome OS channels or switching Chromebooks.

And there’s no need for this! So, what we want to show you today is how to set up your default downloads folder so you never have to wonder “do I need anything on this device?” ever again. The process and setup is painfully simple and, as a Chromebook user, you really should be working in this way to minimize your aggravation and fear about losing saved files.

Make your folder

First up, you need to create the folder that will act as your main Downloads location. You know it well; it is the virtual junk drawer on your device. It is the place all the random, temporary files go to live while you need them. Regardless of this phenomenon, we all end up dropping relatively-important files here right alongside the junk and thus risk the possibility of deleting something worthwhile when we purge the folder. Maybe even worse, we risk not having the file available to us when we actually need it again.

How to watch Netflix in Chrome on the desktop

If you use Google Chrome on Windows or Mac you can watch Netflix by visiting the website. The streaming delivery method may vary depending on the specific version of your OS, with Windows 8.1 and Mac OS X 10.10 supporting plugin-free HTML5 playback.

If you use Google Chrome on Linux you can watch Netflix in the browser thanks to HTML5 streaming. It should start working out of the box in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or later in the coming weeks, but for now requires a small tweak to be made to something called the User-Agent string first.

How to watch Netflix on a Chromebook

Chromebook (/box/base) users (who have not enabled “developer mode”) can stream content directly from the website using the power of HTML5 — including on ARM-based devices like the HP Chromebook 11 or the new Acer Chromebook 13.

Just fire up Netflix, log in with your account and binge-watch away.

Netflix Apps

To make getting to Netflix easier there’s also an official Netflix app in the Chrome Web Store. Now, don’t get excited: it is just a glorified bookmark. But it is handy as you can get at it from the App Launcher or pin it to the App Shelf in Chrome OS.

You can also set it to open in its own window for a more ‘app-like‘ experience.

Using Netflix with Chromecast

Ahh, Chromecast. It makes shunting content from your phone, your tablet or your PC to the biggest screen in your house dead easy.

Mobile

If you have the official Android or iOS app you can stream content directly from Netflix to your Cast-enabled TV. (The apps tell Chromecast to get the stream directly, rather than streaming it from your tablet to the device) .

This method doesn’t just put your favourite programmes and movies on your TV but also lets you use your smartphone or tablet to control playback, adjust volume or enabled subtitles. Laziness is bliss, ain’t it?

If you don’t have (or want) to use the mobile applications but still want to cast, you can do so through the Netflix website in Chrome via the official Cast extension when your Chromecast is turned on and connected to the same network. Now, when you hit play to stream a video you’ll see a ‘cast’ button next to the fullscreen button. Tap this and the content will be flung over to your TV.

Note: if you don’t see the cast button in the web-player ensure that you are not behind a VPN and have no conflicting extensions installed.

Did you know that you can run Android apps in Google Chrome? Back in 2015, Google launched a tool called ARC Welder, which is designed to let developers test their applications in the Chrome browser so they can be ported to Chrome OS. ARC Welder’s primary goal is to make it easy for developers to create more apps for Chrome OS, but the tool can be used by anyone to simply run Android apps in their browser.

It’s pretty easy to run Android apps using the ARC Welder, and below we’ll show you how. It’s worth mentioning, however, that some Android apps don’t run particularly well in Chrome, so you’ll need to do a bit of experimentation to discover which apps work best.

Install ARC Welder

The easiest part of the whole process is installing ARC Welder. Simply head to the Chrome Web Store page for ARC Welder and click install. After the short installation process is complete, you’ll be able to run ARC Welder from the Chrome apps page.

If you have a device that can run Chrome and Chrome apps, you should be able to use the ARC Welder. This means that all desktop operating systems are supported, including Windows 10, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux. From what we’ve seen, the tool works similarly well across all operating systems, so you won’t necessarily get a better experience switching from Windows to MacOS (for example).

ARC Welder is designed for Chrome OS, though, and the tool does warn you that some “platform specific bugs” exist on other operating systems.

Find Android APKs

ARC Welder is designed to open Android APK files, so you’ll have to find and download the APK you want to run. You can’t download APK files from the Google Play Store, so you’ll have to use a third-party download source.

Here on TechSpot we host many APKs of popular apps, but for more obscure apps and discovery we recommend APKMirror as your Android APK source, primarily because it has a nice interface and you can download older versions of practically every app in their collection if necessary. They even have separate versions of many apps for different processor architectures. AndroidAPKsFree is another reasonable source if you can’t find what you’re looking for at APKMirror.

Neither website has paid apps, because downloading APKs for paid apps is piracy. If you really want to download a paid app to use with ARC Welder, you’ll have to look into that yourself.

Run Them in ARC Welder

When you have your APK ready, simply launch ARC Welder in Chrome, and choose a directory where ARC Welder can write some temporary files. After you’ve done this, click to find and add the APK you want to try, which will bring you to a page of configuration options. Google says it’s best to leave these at their default values. To launch the app, click ‘test’.

ARC Welder can only run one app at a time. If you want to open a different app, you’ll need to close the app currently in use, load a new APK, click to remove the old APK from ARC Welder, and then launch the new app.

We tried a number of apps in ARC Welder in Chrome 56 on Windows 10, and found that app support is hit or miss. Some key Android apps like Gmail, Maps and Facebook crash immediately after they load, while others like Keep and Microsoft Word hang indefinitely on their load screen. YouTube loads but throws up an error as it doesn’t have access to Google Play Services. Instagram doesn’t work, and neither does Snapchat. But there’s good news! We did find some apps that did work from our brief test period:

• Twitter loads and operates perfectly. Animations are a bit slow, as you’d expect from emulation software, but the experience is decent enough.
• Plex also seems to work. We could play videos in the app with minor audio distortions.
• AccuWeather had some flickering issues at times but did load.
• SpeedTest.net works if you want to do some network performance testing
• Slack works fine

Most games we tested did not work, or loaded to a black screen. This isn’t hugely surprising, as ARC Welder isn’t built to handle complex 3D workloads. An old game like Temple Run does load, but it renders at about 3 frames per second and you can’t make it past the menu screen anyway.

But ARC Welder isn’t really designed to run Android games in your browser. Instead, it’s a tool primarily targeting app developers wanting to port their apps to Chrome OS, which is why non-game apps are much more likely to load and function correctly. Of all the apps we tested, roughly 40 percent of them loaded and worked in ARC Welder.

It can be useful to try Android apps in Chrome if you don’t have an Android device handy, but it’s far from a perfect Android app emulator. If ARC Welder works with the app you want to test, that’s fantastic, but you shouldn’t expect every app to load or function as intended in this developer-focused tool.
