Hey y'all, it's your friendly neighborhood mod u/Bluexyon here. Since usually most people want to know how to Install Hen and have lot's of questions about it, I decided to write up a somewhat User-Friendly Guide with a little FAQ to answer some of y'all possible questions.
What we will need for this procedure is a USB drive and a PC/Laptop or any way to transfer over files to the USB.
Download the 4.87.1 HFW from Joonie on the PSX-Place Forums.
By now you should have a zip file, extract it by using WinRAR, 7zip or another Program of your choosing.
Take your USB and make sure you format it to FAT32 (formatting will erase all of your files on it). Here is an easy to follow Video on how to.
Create a Folder called PS3 and another Folder called UPDATE inside it by right clicking and choosing New Folder.
Now Place the HFW_4.87.1_PS3UPDAT.PUP inside the UPDATE folder and rename it to PS3UPDAT.PUP by right clicking it and choosing Rename.
Now safely take out the USB or eject it and insert it on the ps3.
On the PS3, before plugging in the USB make sure you have updated your system to 4.87 through the XMB.
After the update is done plug in your USB, shut down the PS3 and enter into Safe/Recovery mode. Here are 2 guides on how to First Guide and Second Guide, (the First one is better explained, but lacks visibility of the PS3 Light and the second one has visibility but isn't as detailed and lacks a good framerate)
In Safe/Recovery mode, scroll down to System Update and follow the onscreen Instructions. After it's finished updating it will reboot to the XMB and will ask for the usual HDMI settings
Once on the XMB go to your PS3 Web Browser and press Triangle, then choose the Tools option and go down to Delete Cookies, from there go ahead and Delete Cookies/Search History/Cache and Authentication Information then exit out from the browser.
Re-open the browser press Start on the controller and then type in ps3xploit.com.
Once you're on the ps3xploit.com website move the cursor to the top left corner and hover over the PS3HEN option and on the drop down Menu choose from the HEN Installer/Enabler or the HEN Enabler (Alternate). I personally recommend the HEN Enabler (Alternate) Since it's easier to use.
After going through the Hen Installer go into the Remote play option and after that exit out by pressing Circle. Now you should see an Install Hen option above the Remote Play option, press X on it and wait for the installation to finish and then reboot the PS3.
After Rebooting enable hen and you're set to play backups and install homebrew.Make sure you always enable Hen on Powering Off and Powering back On the PS3 so that you can run your backups and Homebrew.
Do Steps 1-6 of the Installing PS3HEN Guide
Don't update to the newest OFW that means skip step 7 and instead jump straight to step 8.
And now continue with step 8 through 14
And that's it for Installing Hen and/or Updating it hope it's easy to understand, now for the FAQ
The Hen Installer failed.
Try to repeat step 10 and relaunch the HEN Installer/Enabler, If that doesn't work, try the Hen Enabler (Alternate) or vice versa.
When Enabling Hen it says Failed Rebooting.
This is a common error, you should try re-enabling it and if you want to, you can stop it from rebooting by pressing circle.
My PS3 Freezes after starting a specific Homebrew.
That usually indicates that the homebrew isn't compatible with the Firmware or PS3Hen to fix it uninstall the Homebrew or update it.
My PS3 Freezes after enabling hen.
Unplug your PS3 from the charging socket or unplug the charging cable and enable Hen, if it still freezes then factory reset your PS3 and reinstall hen.
Can I completely overhaul the look of the XMB?
Yes there are a lot of XMB mods outthere but some you'll need to re launch every time you launch Hen
Can I safely go online with Hen?
Well, yes and no, Hen is safer than a full CFW, but since it's still a modification of the original console there is always a ban Risk involved when going online. You can hide yourself and never try to use cheats in games or homebrews while connected to the PSN.
I've installed the PKG version of one of my Own games, but it says I need to get a licence from the PSN.
That's what happens when you don't have the appropriate RAP file for your PKG. Create a folder called exdata on the root of your FAT32 formatted USB and copy over your RAP files to it. Plug it onto the PS3 and launch the Game.
Can I play my PS2/PS1 ISOs?
Yes, you can either download ManaGunZ onto your PS3 or create a PS2Classics PKG for PS2 or a PS1Classics PKG for PSX.
I don't like the Hen bootlogo can I change it?
Yes, you can with HEN Toolbox just be sure of Downloading the appropriate version for your Firmware.

This guide is an overview and explanation of what the Sony PS3 Backup Utility and Transfer Utility settings do. There are a lot of misconceptions and blatantly wrong information out there about the PS3 backup options. Let’s clear them up and get down to the facts. We’ll start with a quick introduction and then get down to some PS3 backup business.
Introduction:
Video game consoles have evolved greatly in the last decade and in turn they have become more complex and computer-like in design/power/functionality. The PS3 is no exception. It has a Blu-ray Disc Drive, Discrete graphics card, multi-core Cell processor and computer laptop harddrive. The original launch PS3s came in the 20GB and 60GB flavors. Later models added 80GB, 120GB, 250GB and now 320GB harddrives. With a built-in harddrive, your game saves, videos, settings, movies, music all gets saved to it.
Like a computer, its usually a good idea to have a backup since game consoles are more likely to fail (again due to the added complexity of them) than previously. Sony finally updated the Backup Utility on the PS3 and also with the introduction of the Slim added another feature, Data Transfer Utility.
Backup Utility
The Backup Utility on the PS3 is located in this area; XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
When you enter the menu, you get three more options:
–Back Up
–Restore
–Delete Backup Data
These options are pretty self-explanatory. Back Up will do a FULL backup of your game saves, game data, games, videos, music and photos. There are a few limitations per Sony, however if you backup your PS3 and get a new hard drive but use the same PS3, all of my data has backed up and restored fine. However, copy-protected game saves WILL NOT restore on a different PS3 than the one you originally backed up the data from. This is very good to know if your getting a new PS3 Slim and had a PS3 Phat; you would want to use the Transfer Utility in this case (more on this later). However, if your just going to upgrade your factory PS3’s hard drive onto the same PS3, a Backup will do the trick. Also, all data is copied to the backup you can create on an external hard drive so PS3 still has the original data.
-Key points, you can restore a backup and all data back onto the same PS3 and get all of your content back. However if you restore on a different PS3 than original backup was from, you will not get any copy-protected data back and have to redownload DLC that is protected too.
Data Transfer Utility
The Data Transfer Utility on the PS3 is located in this area; XMB > Settings > System Settings > Data Transfer Utility
This new utility lets you transfer your data from one PS3 to another PS3 via cat5e network cable (normal computer network cable). This utility will move the data from one PS3 to the other so the original PS3 will no longer have any of the data on it and the new PS3 has the data from the original PS3. This will allow you to copy your protected game saves to the new PS3.
I would recommend a Backup first and then data transfer (that way you can restore the backup to the PS3 you just transferred from). Also be sure to Sync your Trophies on all accounts before doing the Transfer.
If your TV has Picture-In-Picture (PIP) or Picture-By-Picture (PBP, even better!) options, I would use them to do the transfer since you need to follow the on-screen instructions.
External Media Notes
Harddrive MUST be formatted in FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it. Most harddrives and XP/Vista/Win7 will only allow you to format harddrives over 20GB to NTFS and not FAT32. Use a tool such as Fat32Format (this is a command line based utility).
You cannot copy copy-protected game saves to a flash card or memory card, again the Backup utility is needed to backup these files. Yes, annoying.
If you just want your game data, I would recommend deleting all of your Movies, Music and Pictures before doing a backup. You can also redownload purchased movies however it may be easier to leave them on the harddrive.
I had about 340GB of used space on my PS3 and my backup took over 15 hours. So if you have copies of the items on your PC, you may want to delete them off your PS3 before hand and then just recopy back to PS3.
After you backed up your data, think about doing a harddrive upgrade. Its cheap and well worth it. Nothing beats streaming/internet issues than having all your data locally on the PS3.

Upgrade PS3 Harddrive
Many different features about the PlayStation 3 gaming system make it a great entertainment platform. One of the best of these features is the USB compatibility of the PS3 system. Each console features four USB ports, allowing the system to interface seamlessly with USB devices such as keyboards, mice and flash drives. It’s astonishingly easy to use a flash drive with your PS3 once you follow a few basic steps.
Install your flash memory drive’s driver software using a traditional personal computer. You won’t be able to use your flash memory drive with your PS3 system unless the flash drive is already working properly and has all requisite driver software installed on it.
Copy any data from your computer that you want to transfer to your PlayStation 3 onto the flash memory drive. Large files may take up to several minutes to transfer to your flash drive.
Turn your PlayStation 3 game system on using your PS3 wireless controller, and wait for the main menu to load. Always turn the system on and boot it up before inserting hardware into the USB ports.
Insert your flash memory drive into an open USB port on your PS3 console. Access the data on the flash drive by going to the Video, Audio and Picture tabs in the main menu. Also, use the PS3 data storage tools to copy any data from your PS3 onto the flash memory drive.
Transfer files from your PS3 to your PC hard drive, using your flash memory drive, to back them up and save space on your PS3 hard drive.
Use a flash memory drive as a memory stick for your PS3 by saving game files to it for later retrieval.
Warnings:
- Don’t remove a flash memory drive from your PS3 while data transfer is in progress. Doing so may corrupt the data on your flash drive and lead to data loss or even corrupt the drive itself.

How to Restore Custom PS3 Jailbreak Back to PS3 Original Firmware
For whatever reason, you may want to install original firmware back onto your PS3, this could be due to a new game coming out with anti-cheat system.
All you need to do to revert back is to install the original firmware from the PlayStation website.
Unlike with Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony hasn’t enabled any kind of hardware backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4. That means you can’t pop an old PS3 disc into the drive and expect it to launch one of your all-time favorites from back when, nor can you hit the PlayStation Store and download an old PS3 pick . well, unless it’s a remastered edition, of course.
But Sony has a different kind of solution instead: PlayStation Now.
The cloud-based service is accessible via PlayStation 4 and PC, and it lets you tap into a vast library of hundreds of PlayStation 3 titles at any time. The games stream over the internet to your PS4 or PC, and so long as you have a strong enough connection, you should get steady performance. At its best, it’s nearly indistinguishable from running the original discs or downloads.
However, if you have an old save game on your PS3, you might be bummed to have to start over again in a meaty game like Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, or the newly-added Fallout 3. But maybe you don’t have to be.
If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, then you can easily transfer your old save files to the cloud on your PS3 and then pick them back up on the PS4.
Step 1. Use the cloud
PlayStation Plus is the key to online play and free monthly games for PlayStation owners, but there’s another big perk that’s deeper in the details: Plus Online Storage. Essentially, it’s a cloud locker for your precious game saves.
This can be helpful for keeping your saves backed up for peace of mind, or letting you play across multiple PS4s, it’s also perfect for bringing your old PS3 saves up to your current-gen console for PlayStation Now usage.
Before you grab a controller, be sure to browse the PlayStation Now game listings on your PlayStation 4 or via the website. You’ll want to know which PS3 games you plan to revisit on PS4, so you can make sure to move all of your needed game saves at one time.
Assuming that you didn’t already toss your PS3 saves into the cloud long ago, you’ll need your PlayStation 3 for this one – so if it’s buried in a closet somewhere, take a moment to dig it out and dust it off. Once it’s fired up, just head to the Game column in the XMB menu interface and select Saved Data Utility (PS3).
From there, just navigate to any game on the list, tap the triangle button, and you’ll see a Copy command with the PlayStation Plus logo next to it. Hit that, choose the Online Storage folder that pops up, and you’ll be able to send the file up in an instant. If you have multiple save files, or separate save and profile files, then you should probably upload everything you have for each game. Better to do it now than need to fire up the PS3 again for it later.
If you are uploading save content from multiple games, you can save a few steps too. When you tap triangle on any game, navigate up to Copy Multiple instead, and you can select several games at once. You can even Select All and get it all done in one move.
Once you have your files up in the cloud, you’re done with the PS3.
Step 2. Import the saves on PS4
Now it’s time to switch over to the PlayStation 4. Fire up the console and hit the PlayStation Now app to choose which game you want to play.
Once you have a PS3 game up and running on the PS4, you’ll need to play around in the menus a bit to get the save file onto your current console.
Press the Home button on the DualShock 4 controller to pull up the PlayStation Now menu and navigate over to Display PS Now XMB Menu. Essentially, it’s a compact version of the familiar PS3 menu, and it holds the key to pulling your old save into the PlayStation Now game.
Here you’ll see the familiar Saved Data Utility (PS3) option, so tap X and enter. It’ll have you quit the game, so go ahead and agree to that. Enter the Online Storage folder that appears next, and you’ll find the complete listing of all the files you sent up to the cloud. From here, it’s just a matter of pressing triangle on a game, selecting Copy, and waiting the second or two it takes for each file to download. And as before, there’s a Copy Multiple option at the top that’ll save some monotony here.
Hit the circle button a couple times to back out of menus and you’ll be given the option to exit the utility and go back to your PlayStation Now game. Do that, and your save file should be ready and waiting for you to load and continue.
It takes a bit of work and a couple of consoles, but the end result is the ability to pick up where you left off on your old PlayStation 3 games – but now on your PlayStation 4 instead. With massive games like Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas added recently, along with many more epic experiences and old favorites in the PlayStation Now library, you might be tempted to loop back on some classics. Thankfully, you won’t have to sacrifice your hard-earned progress to do so.
Alternatively: Go back to the future!
If for some reason you start playing a PlayStation Now game on your PS4 and you decide that you’d rather continue the quest on your PS3 (with a disc or download), you can move a save file back by essentially reversing the process.
From within the PlayStation Now game on PS4, hit the Home button, enter the Saved Data Utility (PS4), and then choose which Now save you want to copy to the cloud. Go back to your PlayStation 3, enter the same menu from the XMB main menu and enter the Online Storage folder. You’ll be able to copy the save locally from there and continue the game you started on PlayStation Now.

- The transfer is being done, wait …
- You can disconnect your PS3 now.
That’s it, I hope I could help as much people as possible.
ENJOY !

I wish my ps3 was modded so i could use this ;-;
You don’t need it to be modded you just need it to be Jailbreak lol
it’s the exact same thing shut up
How are they the same? Modded implies physical modifications while jailbroken implies software exploit to run unsigned code. Then there’s custom firmware which is a modified operating system or firmware running thanks to an exploit.
Ummm……shouldn’t anybody that has a modified game system be capable enough to figure out how to FTP if they don’t already know? Shouldn’t basic computer skills be a requirement before modding any system? Oh yeah, that’s right – most people got on PS3 CFW just by throwing an update file on their USB drive
The only problem I see with this guide is it doesn’t explain what all the device locations are
dev_bdvd = bluray drive (not writable)
dev_blind = flash (writable – has to be enabled in multiMAN’s settings – ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED USERS)
dev_flash – dev_flash3 = Flash (not writable and for good reason)
dev_hdd0 – internal hard drive (writable)
dev_hdd0 – cache partition (writable but not permanent)
dev_usb0 – usb drive plugged in far right USB slot (writable as FAT32, read only as NTFS except on Cobra compatible firmware)
dev_usb1 and up – (writable – continues from right to left. Depends on your model how many usb ports you have)
Why are you acting like you have such a superiority complex? Let me guess, from day 1 you knew everything about computers right? you were never a noob? you give this scene a bad name.
Should you not be allowed to drive a car just because you don’t know how an engine works?
shut the *** up dude.
Hey numb nuts this is a little different from computers. I’m used to using FTP programs for servers and computers, or just SSH into them, but the PS3 isn’t the same in terms of allowing it to FTP and obtaining the IP. I’ve decided to mess around with a PS3 recently since I haven’t used cfw on one yet and found this article to verify information on it instead of asking on a forum where pretentious *** like you will *** and moan to look it up. You’re the reason why the PS scene is insufferable; people like you telling newcomers to look up info instead of answering simple questions, leading to tons of people asking the same questions and making sifting through dozens of threads a pain, all the while berating a source of information that would alleviate this congestion. Get bent.
sorry – the cache partition should have read as dev_hdd1. Damn typos
This is assuming you use windows as well. Tisk tisk
Also the transfer mode is active not activate
? This doesn’t assume you use Windows at all.
this is stupid after everything that’s been done on ps3 it takes like 2 seconds to use FTP on ps3 all u need is blackbox and cuteFTP. Just run Blackbox it gives u ps3 ip, type the ip in CuteFTP and set it to port 21 that’s it. Why do u need Multiman at any tim or all the extra steps please I have 4 hacked PS3’s 2 slim and 2 fat
blackbox doesn’t work on any cfw over 3.55
Multiman works on everything.
Yeah it does im running now blackbox n filezilla n have cfw 4.65 cobra(
Ok I had a hacked ps3 since the beginning of the whole cfw thing. The easiest FTP method for me was always just run blackbox on ps3 get the IP, leave blackbox running, go to pc run either cuteFTP or Filezilla, type IP as host and type in port 21 that,s it. It works the same way for VitaFTP, why do all those steps.
i want a pseudotv hardware or software (a xbmc tv channels fake plugin from hdd)
but im waiting for vhbl with remotejoynet for vita
allthough i really want xbmc on psp and ps3 to …
but the otheros is gone from newer firmware
and euhm that pseudotv i want is a new version with dlna
but i want more home network tools for psp and ps3
like joining a home network for workgroups
and a dlna media player
the bummer with my digital dlna tv recorder is
atm i have to install a yelo.tv app for telenet
and login to record but allso login to play
and on ps3 this works without the login
so whats the reversal of ps3 firmware been coming out to lately ?
any new aspirations in life for pc software or psp homebrew ?
Not been funny but this guide was around when the ps3 first got hacked, So really all you need to do is google for guide which hundreds can be found, so far all ive seen is copy/paste from other sources
“How to use FTP inefficiently on PS3.” Seriously Ftp is a 3 step process.
1.FTP program on PC/Tablet/Phone.
2. CFW enabled PS3 with CuteFTP on it.
3.Connect to address with PC Program that CuteFTP gives.
