How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

By Robert King

With a new design and a dark mode option, the web version of Facebook is keeping with the times and getting a facelift too! Even though it’s not yet official, some lucky users can already activate this new interface. In this article, we’ll show you how to do just that.
How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

Announced a few months ago, Facebook is modifying its interface to make it more elegant, easier to navigate and more modern with a new design organised in blocks, inspired by the mobile app.

Still being rolled out internationally, this new interface is already available to some users but is not automatically activated by default and Facebook has not yet officially presented it. In the meantime though, you can already choose to swap your account to the new Facebook version and test it out. It is worth noting that the new interface is not activated by default and you will have to manually update your Facebook account to enjoy it.

How To Activate the New Interface

  • Open Facebook with your web browser and login to your account if it doesn’t open automatically. In the blue bar at the top of the page, click on the downward facing arrow.
  • From the drop down menu, select Change to the New Facebook located between settings and Log Out.

  • Once this is done, an information window like the one below appears. Click on Next.

How To Use the New Interface

You will notice that the basic actions and functions of this new design remain practically the same as the old interface, but with some obvious aesthetic changes, inspired by the mobile app. You will now find the search box in the top left corner and located to the right, the buttons to access your profile, send messages, view notifications and configure your account. There are 5 large sections in the centre: your homepage newsfeed, Facebook Watch, Facebook MarketPlace, Groups and finally Facebook Gaming.

Depending on the section you’re in, the interface shortcuts displayed on the left will vary slightly. When you’re on the homepage, you will be able to access groups, events, memories etc via the shortcuts column on the left. When in Facebook Watch or Marketplace, the left side column will allow you to perform searches, display suggestions etc. When on the homepage, the column on the right will be reserved for events in the calendar and your list of contacts (this column is inaccessible from other pages). Finally, on the homepage, you will find your newsfeed filled with up to date news from friends and pages you follow, with Facebook stories located directly above.

How To Change Modes

If you didn’t opt to try the dark mode when setting up the new Facebook interface or you would prefer to swap back to the light mode again, follow these steps:

  • In the top bar, click on the downward pointing arrow
  • Slide the Dark Mode switch to on or slide it off to return to Light Mode.

UPDATE: iPad users, be sure to read all the way to the bottom of the post, as there is an update regarding access to the full Facebook desktop in the Safari browser.

I can’t live without my tablet. First, I used the iPad and then eventually switched to an Android tablet as my primary gadget.

If you are a tablet owner, though, you probably know that apps like Twitter and Facebook treat your tablet as a mobile device by default. Instead of showing you the desktop version of a site, they automatically switch over to the mobile view of the website.

Personally, I hate the stripped-down, ad-heavy versions of the Facebook and Twitter apps, so I browse them using the native Facebook desktop view or Twitter desktop view in Safari or Chrome. The challenge, though, is finding a way to get Twitter and Facebook to ignore the fact that I’m on my tablet and serve up the Facebook desktop view.

Identifying How To Get The Facebook Desktop View On Your Tablet

It took me an hour of finding workarounds for Twitter and I document the process of switching to the Twitter desktop view (not the mobile view) of Twitter in this blog post.

Facebook can be just as infuriating, too, so I set out to find a way to view the full version of the Facebook web pages on mobile.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

Facebook doesn’t make it easy for you to switch from desktop to mobile view on your mobile device, tablet, or ipad.

Most apps have a “Switch To Desktop View” link in their footer navigation, but Facebook mobile site doesn’t include one.

And to be honest, it takes a small miracle to even see the footer navigation on the mobile version of the Facebook site because the minute you scroll below the fold, the site makes an AJAX call to add more posts to your timeline (because it thinks you’re browsing back in time) and it loads more posts.

The effect is that the Facebook footer navigation on their mobile site gets pushed down even further. So…if the mobile footer even had a “switch to Facebook desktop view” or a”Facebook desktop” link you would likely never get to the point where you could see it, let alone click it.

So in an effort to not duplicate solutions created by others, I consulted Google and conducted searches like the following to find how to get the desktop version of Facebook on my mobile device:

tablet switch facebook mobile – Nope. No easy fix.

facebook not mobile version – A couple of technical articles, but no simple solution.

facebook for desktop – Nothing useful.

facebook.com on tablet or mobile device – Nope.

force facebook desktop – Again, no articles that solved it issue.

desktop facebook on tablet – AhHah!! Something helpful!

In this post on the ASUS Transformer forums, one user indicates that the standard browser on the ASUS tablet has a checkbox that stops the browser from requesting mobile sites and allows you to browse the web in desktop mode, instead of mobile mode.

Brilliant!

To confirm, I checked the settings on my ASUS tablet and, sure enough, there it is. Mine was unchecked by default.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

Make your Android tablet browse Facebook using the desktop view, not the mobile view

Another note, if you don’t use the standard ASUS browser, I also checked that the Firefox mobile browser and the Chrome browser have settings to Request a desktop site.

Important Tip – Once Facebook opens in your browser, be sure that the URL for the site is and not Facebook can get a little sneaky and redirect you to the mobile version of their site, even if you request the desktop site. No worries, though, just adjust the URL and the rest of your session will be on the standard Facebook desktop site.

In those browsers, just load up Facebook.com in your mobile browser and then choose the dropdown menu and check “Request Desktop Site” in either of these browsers. When this checkbox is ticked, the browser will send metadata that it is a desktop version of the browser and Facebook will respond by showing the Facebook desktop website, rather than the mobile version of the site.

Can iPad Users View The Desktop Version Of Facebook?

Is there a way to force Facebook to display the desktop site on an iPad instead of the mobile site in Safari?

The answer is YES. both Safari and Chrome for iOS include the optional setting to request the desktop version of the Facebook.com site. So, using the same steps, Safari and Chrome users on the iPad or iPhone can use this link to switch to the desktop site.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

iPad and iPhone users can also request the desktop version of a site from within Safari

I hope these tips help!

The bright white space of Facebook’s interface can strain your vision after long hours of browsing. Give your eyes a break by enabling Facebook’s Dark Mode. Change the new interface from light to dark by activating this setting.

Go to Facebook’s website in any desktop browser and log in to your account. If you haven’t already enabled the new Facebook Desktop interface, doing so is as easy as flipping a switch in your account’s settings.

Once you’ve turned on the new Facebook interface, click on the down arrow in the top-right corner to open your Account menu. You can then toggle the “Dark Mode” option to activate the setting.

If you want to revert to Light Mode, you can turn off Dark Mode by following these same instructions.

Substantial research suggests that Dark Mode isn’t better for you, but it’s always nice to have this feature handy when you’re switching between light and dark environments.

Yeah, I know every Facebook’ers around the globe are quite surprised on how the new Facebook looks – Facebook made a major revamp on their UI (User-Interface). And for some non-technical users were kinda at lost on how to navigate the new face of Facebook. While some might liked the new look, there are still users who wanted the old face since they are already used to it.

Don’t you worry there’s still hope on how you can bring back the old interface and here’s how you can do it – it’s really easy!

This is how your Facebook looks like:

It’s possible that Facebook haven’t fully loaded the change on all languages or what we call localisation or storefront. Initially, they only made the changes on English (US). Nevertheless, you need to familiarize yourself with the new interface since sooner or later, the change will be applied to all languages.

Are you – for one reason or another – not a fan of the New 2020 Facebook for Desktop Design and you hate you the fact that FB is now practically forcing everyone to use it by removing the “Switch To Classic Facebook” option in the Settings?

Like you, I also prefer the classic Facebook look. It’s not that I don’t like embracing new things. It’s just that, for me, the old version is far more intuitive and cleaner.

Personally, I think there’s just too many things going on in the new design that it can sometimes be confusing and annoying. I also don’t like it when I click on my profile link and it’s not automatically refreshed. Plus, since I like sending messages to my friends often, I prefer always seeing that “big” list with on the right side of the screen which is not outright available on the new version.

Thankfully, just a few minutes ago, I found a sure-fire way to switch to the Classic Facebook Desktop Look even without that link in the settings! It’s a Chromium Extension for Google Chrome and the New Microsoft Edge web browsers made by InviteTools.

Let me give you a step-by-step guide on how to install it on your browser and how to use. It’s actually very easy.

1. Download “Switch To Classic Design on Facebook” extension here.

2. Just tap on “Add To Chome” button and when a small box pops up asking you if you want to add the extension to your browser just choose “Add Extension”.

3. Once the extension has been installed on your Google Chrome or New Microsoft Edge web browser, just click on the icon and choose “Classic Facebook Design” in the options.

4. Open Facebook in one of the tabs or if it’s already there just refresh the page to check if the interface has returned to the Classic or Old version.

5. If you wish so, you may pin the icon on your browser’s skin by tapping on the “Extensions” button – as shown below – and clicking the pin icon for “Switch To Classic Design on Facebook”.

If you found this Chromium extension useful, don’t forget to thank its creator “InviteTools” by leaving your positive review on the lower part of the download page.

Don’t forget to share this TechPinas post with your friends if the solution worked for you. Let’s keep helping each other out by spreading working solutions to our internet issues. Cheers!

Whenever Facebook updates its interface, familiar features can be hard to find. While the ability to sort your Facebook feed by most recent is still available, it has moved to a slightly different location.

Sort Feed by Most Recent in Facebook’s New Design

If you haven’t already enabled the new Facebook Desktop interface, most should have the option to upgrade and switch over right now. This new design will probably replace the current Facebook interface in the future. But for now, most accounts are able to change back and forth between the two interfaces at any time.

To sort your Facebook feed by most recent, start by going to Facebook’s website in any desktop browser and log in to your account. Once you’ve enabled the new Facebook interface, click on “See More” in the left sidebar. In this sidebar, you can access a wide range of additional content, including the new Facebook Gaming streaming service.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

Scroll down this expanded list to find the “Most Recent” button. Click it and Facebook will refresh the page.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

All of your feed’s posts in the center of your main page will now be sorted by date, with the most recent posts at the top. This will not be a permanent change, unfortunately, as the social network will occasionally revert back to an algorithmic view. You’ll have to follow these instructions any time you want to sort your Facebook this way.

Sort Feed by Most Recent in Facebook’s Old Design

If you’re using Facebook’s older interface, you can still sort your Facebook feed by most recent. Click the three horizontal dots next to “News Feed” in the left sidebar and then select the “Most Recent” option.

How to switch to the new facebook desktop interface

As with the new design, you’ll need to enable this setting every time you close or refresh your feed.

Given that this entire interface is brand new for millions of Facebook users, there may be some changes in the future as feedback starts to roll in. Whether or not that has an impact or changes how the Facebook Feed is sorted remains to be seen.

Is there a way to force it on? Like with changing something using the browser’s object inspector? Or am I just at the mercy of Facebook till they decide I can see the new UI? I thought they had enabled the option already for “most” users? Thanks for not including me, you fucks.

Yah, I don't have the option to switch to new facebook. Everyone else in my house is already using it.

I can understand rolling it out slowly for auto opt-in, but I feel like it's super lame to not let us manually opt-in.

Between this and Google STILL rolling out dark mode for Gmail 8 months after they started, I’m getting super irritated by unnecessarily long roll-out periods.

Still don't have it

I just logged into my wife's account and she has the option but when I logged her out to switch mine I don't have the option. Any ideas as to why? I see people are saying certain browsers etc. but I was on the same exact browser/computer. so I don't get it.

It’s a gradual rollout by batches of accounts. Your account, like mine, has not been enabled yet.

I still don't have it.

We're all in this together.

I have two facebook profiles. One for friends, and one for family. I have had my family one since middle school, but my friend one i started right before graduating highschool. My new one has the option for the new layout, but my original facebook does not.

Actually the exact opposite happened to me lol. My old family account has it, but my new friends account doesn't

I still don't have it.

The cLaSsIc UI looks like a 90s Website and everything is so cluttered, the New UI is soo much cleaner and it makes ZERO sense to slowly roll out the new UI, My mother just got the New Facebook Layout, MY SISTER got the new layout, and I'm still using the cluttered old layout. Facebook is being stupid

in the same boat 🙁

Don't bother. I switched to it recently hoping it would actually WORK, unlike the old Facebook where 90% of the time when I would click a notification it would not take me to and open the comment that a reply was submitted to, but the redesign is still just as broken a Facebook has always been on desktop.
I don't know how a company as big as Facebook and hiring as many engineers as Facebook could hire people as incomeptent as they have. Facebook has never in the ten years I have been using it on desktop actually worked properly.
