Siri has been around for several versions of iOS now, and her capabilities have only increased over time. Using Siri can make it easier for you to perform some common tasks, and is a great addition to the iPhone for the people that use her.
But the method launching Siri by pressing and holding the Home button may be something that you dislike. The alternative, which will launch something called Voice Control, may also be undesired. Fortunately you can alter this behavior on your iPhone so that nothing happens when you press and hold the Home button. Our guide below will show you where to make this change.

Siri is the default voice assistant for iOS devices and mostly everyone who is using an iPhone or an iPad makes use of Siri to get everyday tasks done. The most popular method to bring up Siri on your device is by saying “Hey Siri” however it can also pop up by using your Home/Side button on iPhone. If you are a person who uses these buttons a lot then I am sure you must have faced those moments where Siri might have popped up even when you don’t needed it and that gets annoying.
Hence to solve that problem, users can play around with some Settings and disable the Home/Side button on their iPhone to bring up Siri and in this guide we are going to show you how it’s done. Let’s get started with the guide.

Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, isn’t for everyone. If you don’t find Siri useful, or you accidentally keep invoking Siri using the Side button or the “Hey Siri” phrase, here’s how you can disable Siri for good on your iPhone or iPad.
How to Disable Siri on iPhone and iPad
Disabling Siri can be achieved in a handful of steps. First, open the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad and then select the “Siri & Search” option.
Here, tap on the toggle next to the following options to turn each item off:
- Listen for “Hey Siri”
- Press Side Button for Siri
- Allow Siri When Locked (if you only want to disable Siri on the Lock screen)
When you disable the first two options, you’ll see a popup asking you if you really want to turn off Siri. Here, tap on the “Turn Off Siri” button.
Siri has now been disabled on your iPhone and iPad.
How to Disable Siri Suggestions on iPhone and iPad
While Siri started out as a voice assistant for the iPhone and iPad, its role has significantly expanded in the past couple of years. Siri is now used as a blanket term for all smart suggestion features.
From app suggestions in search to smart notifications on the lock screen (which can be quite annoying), everything is handled by Siri behind the scenes. Don’t worry, you can turn these off as well and right from the Siri & Search section in the Settings app.
Once in the menu, swipe down until you see the “Siri Suggestions” section and then tap on the toggle buttons next to the “Suggestions In Search,” “Suggestions In Look Up,” and “Suggestions On Lock Screen” options to disable each item.
Now that you’ve disabled Siri on your iPhone or iPad, the next step is to delete your Siri history.

It’s like the Interrupting Cow joke that delights school-age kids everywhere; you activate Siri and start speaking your request, only to be interrupted by, “Here’s what I found on the web.” At which point you probably say something like “If you’d just let me #[email protected]%ing finish, Siri, you’d know I’m trying to call my wife, not do a web search!”
I can’t help you with your anger issues, but I do have a very simple solution to your problems with Interrupting Siri. Here’s how to get Siri to stop interrupting you and listen to your entire question.
Instead of activating Siri using the Hey Siri feature, you’ll need to activate Siri manually. On iPhones version 6s and later, holding the Home button and asking a question manually activates Siri. For the iPhone X, you’ll need to hold the Side button. Once the Home or Side button is released, Siri sees that as a cue to reply. To make Siri stop interrupting:
- Instead of releasing the Home or Side button once you’ve activated Siri, continue holding until you’re completely finished asking your question.
It’s that simple. Now aren’t you sorry you yelled at Siri when she was just trying to help?
If you have an iPhone 6s or later, you can turn on Siri by saying, “Hey, Siri” even when your iPhone isn’t plugged in. However, you also have the option to press and hold your Home button to activate Siri. With iOS 11 on iPhone, you can now turn press and hold to activate Siri off and reply solely on activating Siri with your voice by saying, “Hey, Siri.” If you often accidentally activate Siri when pressing your Home button, this is a great way to stop that from happening. Here’s how to turn off Press Home for Siri and instead only activate with Hey, Siri on iPhone.
How to Turn off Press Home for Siri and Only Activate with Hey, Siri on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Select Siri.
- Toggle off Press Home for Siri.
That’s it! Make sure Listen for “Hey Siri” is on or you won’t be able to activate Siri at all.
With the new tvOS 12.3 update, Apple has unleashed the new TV app worldwide. With a flick of a switch, it’s available in more than 100 countries. That would be fine on its own. But it comes with a major annoyance. The default behavior of the TV/Home button on the Siri remote has changed. It now opens the TV app instead of taking you to the Home screen. Here’s how you can stop the Apple TV home button from opening the TV app.
How to Change Apple TV Home Button Behavior
Once the tvOS 12.3 update is done, you’ll see a popup telling you about the change. Here’s the rundown. Pressing the TV/Home button will now open the TV app. If you press the Home button again, then you’ll end up on the Home screen. And to jump to the Home screen from anywhere, you need to press and hold the Menu button. Of course, this is barbaric and needs to be changed. Here’s how.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Apple TV.
Step 2: Go to Remotes and Devices.
Step 3: Scroll to the Home Button option and press on the Touchpad.
Step 4: The option will change from the TV app to Home Screen. You’ve successfully changed the Home button behavior. If you want to go back, come back to this screen and press the Touchpad on the Home Button option again.
What Do You Use Apple TV For?

In its never-ending quest to innovate its flagships, Apple’s newer iPhone models with Face ID do away with the iconic Home button present since the first iPhone back in 2007. That means screenshots, force-restarting, switching apps, Apple Pay, and the home screen all work differently on the iPhone X, X R , X S , X S Max, 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. One of the more important aspects, Siri, is also slightly different.
Fortunately, activating Siri on the iPhones with Face ID is incredibly easy to do, and it will take very little time to get used to even with the lack of a Home button.
In addition to the nifty “Hey Siri” feature that lets you summon Siri simply by calling to her even if your device is asleep, you can still physically activate Siri on your Face ID model by holding down the big Side button for two or three seconds. To exit Siri, either swipe up from the bottom of the display or quickly press the Side button to take you back to the home screen.

If you enabled “Type to Siri” on your iPhone (either manually or through a restore from another iPhone backup), you’ll see the keyboard screen pop up on the Siri window. You can only talk to Siri by using the dictation feature on the keyboard, which will translate your words to text you can then submit. Otherwise, the only way to talk to Siri with this feature on is to just use “Hey Siri.”
However, you could hop on iOS 13 if you’re not already. With the latest iOS version, you can type in the search bar on the home screen then tap the “Ask Siri” button at the bottom of the results. Effectively, that’s Type to Siri, and you can disable the actual Type to Siri feature and continue using the Side button shortcut for vocal commands.
Now that Siri is accessible through the exposed Side button on the iPhone, we recommend being a little more careful when stowing the device away in your pocket — especially with tight clothing — to prevent unwanted Siri activations.
