How to roll back to ios 10 (if you’re using the ios 11 beta)
Congratulations, you’ve downloaded the iOS 11 beta! No doubt you’ve by now had your fun experimenting with Apple’s latest operating system packed with new features like a QR code-friendly camera app, a customizable control center, and a file manager app (named, unfortunately, Files).
But you might also be experiencing a few growing pains as you use your new, not-too-stable OS. So here’s how to get the damn thing off your iOS device and head back to iOS 10 so your smartphone doesn’t randomly reboot at the worst possible moment. The best part? It’s Apple-approved .
Step One: Download the iOS 10 restore image
Since you’re using iOS 11, you’ll have to download the older iOS 10 image. Luckily, you can get the right software image straight from Apple . From there you can choose the corresponding restore image (in this case, iOS 10.3.3) for your device and wait for the multi-gigabyte file to download.

Step Two: Connect your iOS device to your computer
This is pretty self-explanatory.
Step Three: Put your device into recovery mode
To restore your device you’ll have to put it into Recovery Mode with a few timed button presses. If you’re using an iPad, iPhone 6s or earlier, or iPod touch, you can hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time. Hold and wait until your device enters recovery mode.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users have to follow a different set of button presses and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button at the same time, then wait until the recovery mode screen pops up.
Step Four: Restore your iOS device
After you enter Recovery Mode, iTunes will present you with the option to restore your device. From there you’ll need to hold the Option key (hold Shift if you’re using Windows) and press Restore. Select the previously downloaded iOS software image and wait for your device to install it.
After your restore is complete you can activate your device and restore from an iTunes backup, and wait for your device to restore itself to its former glory.
Don’t like iOS 11 on your iPhone or iPad? You can downgrade to iOS 10.3.3 if you act quickly. Maybe you don’t like the update, maybe you find iOS 11 battery life to be poor, or app compatibility to be a problem, or perhaps you think the performance is subpar. Whatever the reason, you can easily downgrade iOS 11 if you need to, but the ability to downgrade is only available for a limited time while Apple continues to sign the prior operating system release of iOS 10.3.3.
We’ll walk through how you can downgrade iOS 11 back to iOS 10 on an iPhone or iPad.
This guide requires iTunes and a computer, internet access, an iOS 10.3.3 ISPW file, and a USB cable. There is no way to downgrade iOS 11 without iTunes and a computer.
Important note: downgrading iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 can cause data loss, including the removal of important data or everything on your iPhone or iPad. Thus it is critical to have a backup that is compatible with iOS 10 available before downgrading (one should have been made prior to updating to iOS 11 in the first place), this is because iOS 11 backups are not compatible with iOS 10 or other prior releases. If you only have a backup for iOS 11, then downgrading to iOS 10 may require you to update again to iOS 11 in order to restore from that iOS 11 backup. If you don’t know what you are doing and do not have adequate backups, do not attempt to downgrade or you may experience permanent data loss on the iPhone or iPad.
We’ll cover two ways to downgrade, a simple way that should work for most users, and an approach that requires Recovery Mode if the first downgrade method fails.
How to Downgrade iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 the Easy Way
Be sure you have recent backups available of your iOS device to avoid potential data loss. An iOS 11 backup is only able to be restored to an iOS 11 device, thus you would need an iOS 10 backup to restore to iOS 10. Failing to have a compatible backup can lead to permanent data loss.
- Go here and download the iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for the iPhone or iPad you wish to downgrade and save that .ipsw file somewhere easy to locate like the desktop
Open the iTunes app on a Mac or Windows PC
Using a USB cable, connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you wish to downgrade to the computer
- Mac OS: OPTION + click the “Update” button
- Windows PC: SHIFT + click the “Update” button
The downgrade from iOS 11 to iOS 10.3.3 should go without a hitch, assuming you chose the proper iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for your device, and assuming Apple is still signing the system software. Once Apple stops signing iOS 10.3.3 then downgrading to it from iOS 11 will be impossible.
Some users have reported that sometimes data in iBooks, Notes, Music, and Messages may go missing with the “update” downgrade approach outlined above. If that happens to you, simply restore the device from an iOS 10.3.3 compatible backup once the device is back on iOS 10.3.3.
Note that if you choose “Restore” in the above process and then select IPSW, then the device will be either restored from a backup made compatible with iOS 10.3.3 or setup as new like a standard restore process, which can then be restored with a compatible backup.
If for some reason the above downgrade method fails, you can use the Recovery Mode approach to downgrading iOS 11 detailed next.
How to Downgrade from iOS 11 with Recovery Mode on iPhone and iPad
Rarely, the above downgrade process will fail or get stuck on an Apple logo, or stuck on a black screen. If this happens, you can start the downgrade over again while the iPhone or iPad is in Recovery Mode or DFU mode*
- Launch iTunes on the computer
- Download the appropriate iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for your device that you want to downgrade
- Put the iPhone or iPad into Recovery Mode using the instructions appropriate for your device:
- For iPad, iPhone 6s and earlier with a clickable Home button, and iPod touch: Press and hold both the Power button and Home button at the same time. Continue holding the buttons down until you see a recovery mode iTunes connect screen (this happens after you see the Apple logo, just keep holding the buttons)
- For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press down and hold the Power button and Volume Down button concurrently and continue holding until you see the recovery mode screen, this happens after you see the Apple logo so continue holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode indicator of the iTunes logo
- With the iPhone or iPad in Recovery Mode, connect the device to a computer with iTunes
- For Mac, OPTION click on “Restore” and for Windows SHIFT click on “Restore” and select the iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file you downloaded in the second step
- Restore the device to iOS 10.3.3, when the restore is complete choose to setup as new or restore a backup that is compatible with iOS 10.3.3 (note that iOS 11 backups are not compatible with prior iOS releases)
* You can learn how to put iPhone 7 into DFU mode here and how to put other iPhone and iPad models into DFU mode here. It’s unusual to need DFU mode to downgrade unless something has gone wrong and the device has become totally unresponsive.
Help, My iOS 11 Backup Won’t Work on iOS 10!
If you only have a backup from iOS 11, then it will not work with an iOS 10.3.3 device that has been downgraded. Instead, you will need to download the iOS 11 update or update the device to iOS 11 through Setting app, and then restore the iOS 11 backup to the device after it has been updated to a compatible version of system software. There is no way to make an iOS 11 backup compatible with an iOS 10.3.3 device as the iOS backups are not backwards compatible.
What’s your experience with downgrading iOS 11? Why did you downgrade and how did it go? Share your experience in the comments below!
There’s lots of new stuff in iOS 11, but just because things have changed doesn’t mean they’re better. So if you’ve updated to Apple’s latest OS and decided it wasn’t for you, you’ll be happy to know that you can still go back to iOS 10.3.3.
But this window of opportunity for downgrading won’t last forever. Now that iOS 11 has gone official, Apple will soon stop signing old firmware versions, meaning you won’t be able to roll back unless you’ve saved your SHSHS2 blobs. So it’s your last chance to get the Auto-Brightness setting back to normal or avoid other annoying changes.
UPDATE: Apple is no longer signing iOS 10.3.3, so your chance to downgrade back from iOS 11 is no longer an option. However, you can still use this guide to downgrade an iOS 11.X.X version back to a previous iOS 11 version that’s still be signed by Apple. The process is the same.
Until that day comes, however, it’s actually quite easy to revert to iOS 10.3.3. All you need is a Mac or Windows PC, and the process only takes a few minutes of work, so let’s go ahead and get started, shall we?
Step 1: Disable ‘Find My iPhone’
First, you’ll need to disable Find My iPhone. To do that, head to Settings, then tap your name at the top of the list and select “iCloud.” From here, select “Find My iPhone,” then make sure to turn off the toggle switch on the following screen.
Step 2: Download the IPSW File for Your Device
Next, you’ll need to download the iOS 10.3.3 IPSW file for your particular device. This is a firmware file you’ll be installing with iTunes to roll back your operating system, and luckily, we have a highly trusted source where you can get this file. So head to the following link from your computer, then pick your device and model.
From here, choose iOS 10.3.3 when prompted, then click the “Download” button. The file is rather large, so it may take a while to download, but make sure to note the file’s location once it’s finished.
Step 3: Connect to iTunes
Next, connect your device to your computer with a Lightning cable, then open iTunes if it doesn’t launch automatically. From there, make sure the phone icon appears near the top-left corner of the window — this signifies that iTunes has recognized your device.
Step 4: Put Your Phone into DFU Mode
Next, turn off your phone while it’s still connected to the computer. This can be done by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button, then swiping the slider.
From there, you’ll need to boot into DFU mode. This varies depending on what device you own.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: While the phone is turned off and connected to iTunes, press and hold the sleep/wake button for 3 seconds. From there, press and hold the volume down button while still holding the sleep/wake button. After 10 more seconds, release the sleep/wake button, but continue holding the volume down button. Wait 5 more seconds, then release the volume down button — if the screen is still black, you’re in DFU mode. If you see the Apple logo or a “Connect to iTunes” message instead, try again.
- iPhone 6 s or older: While the phone is turned off and connected to iTunes, press and hold the home button and the sleep/wake button simultaneously. After 10 seconds, release the sleep/wake button, but continue holding the home button. Wait 10 more seconds, then release the home button — if the screen is still black, you’re in DFU mode. If you see the Apple logo or a “Connect to iTunes” message instead, try again.
Once you’ve successfully entered DFU mode, iTunes will display a message confirming that the phone is in recovery mode. Click “OK” here.
Step 5: Install the Older Firmware
After that, if you’re using a Mac, hold down the Option button on your keyboard. Otherwise, if you’re running Windows, hold down the Shift button. While still holding the keyboard button, click “Restore iPhone.”
Next, a file browser menu will appear — use this to find and select the IPSW file that you downloaded in Step 2. Once you’ve done that, click “Open.”
After a few seconds, you’ll see a popup informing you that iTunes will now install iOS 10.3.3 on your device. Click “Restore” here, then sit back and wait, because the process of installing the older firmware will take up to 30 minutes. Along the way, you may be prompted to enter your PIN on your device, so make sure to do that if asked.
Once iTunes has finished installing the older firmware, your device will automatically reboot. When that happens, go ahead and disconnect your phone from your computer.
Step 6: Restore Data from iCloud
Once the process has finished, run through initial setup on your iPhone, then select “Set Up as New” if you want a fresh start, or “Restore from iCloud Backup” if you want to get all your apps and data back. If going with the latter, just sign in with your Apple ID, then select the most recent iOS 10.3.3 backup, and your apps and data will be restored. You can also choose “Restore from iTunes Backup” instead if you archived iOS 10.3.3 before installing iOS 11.
At this point, you should be back to the comfy confines of iOS 10.3.3. But if you’re having any trouble with the above downgrading method, let us know in the comment section below and we’ll try to steer you in the right direction.

The official release of Apple’s iOS 10 mobile operating system is still a few months away, but starting today, June 7, the public beta version is available to download if you’d like to get a head start on checking out all the cool new features included in Apple’s latest mobile OS.
You’ll need to enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program in order to get the pre-release version of iOS 10 on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. All you have to do is visit beta.apple.com, hit the “Sign Up” button, then sign in using the Apple ID and password that you use on your iOS device.
Once you’re registered in the Beta Software Program, you’ll need to enroll your device, which you can do easily from your iOS device by visiting
You’ll be instructed to archive an iOS backup of your device using iTunes, which I highly recommend before continuing so that you can restore your device back to iOS 9 if need be. It’s a good idea to have the option to roll the update back if you can’t stand all the bugs, crashes, and other performance errors.
Once that’s done, hit the “Download profile” button, then go to Settings -> General -> Software Update, and you’ll see the iOS 10 beta available for download and installation.
Keep in mind that older iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches won’t be compatible with the new operating system. You’ll need an iPhone 5 or newer, fourth-generation iPad or newer, or sixth-generation iPod touch or newer in order to use the iOS 10 beta.
After you’ve installed the beta and want to know all the cool new things you can do with it, be sure to check out our always-expanding guide to all of the new features of iOS 10.
The macOS Sierra Beta Is Out, Too
For desktop users, the upcoming macOS Sierra is also available in beta. You’ll need to currently be running OS X El Capitan to be eligible to try macOS Sierra, and you’ll first have to download the El Capitan Public Beta Access Utility, then install the beta from the Mac App Store.

Can I go back to an older version of iOS?
Apple might occasionally let you downgrade to a previous version of iOS if there’s a big problem with the latest version, but that’s it. You can choose to sit on the sidelines, if you like — your iPhone and iPad won’t force you to upgrade. But, after you do upgrade, it’s not generally possible to downgrade again.

iOS 11 has finally been announced and the first beta is in the hands of developers. But of course, like any other brand new pre-release software, there are bound to be numerous issues. For instance, it’s not fit for being use as a daily driver. Apps and games haven’t been updated to take advantage of the new APIs Apple has introduced. Don’t even get me started on the crashes and battery life issues. So, with those issues bombarding you miserably, it’s best to roll back to iOS 10 right now. Just follow the tutorial below and you’ll be back in business in no time.

2. Once your device is detected, iTunes should launch automatically. If it doesn’t, then launch it manually.
3. Now select your device by clicking on the little ‘iPhone’ or ‘iPad’ shaped icon on the top left hand corner of iTunes.
4. See that ‘Restore iPhone’ button? Click on it while holding down the left ‘Option’ button (Mac) or the left ‘Shift’ key (Windows).
5. A new pop-up window will appear on the screen. Just select the iOS 10 IPSW file you downloaded and let iTunes verify it.
The entire process won’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes. But once you are done, you’ll be back on iOS 10, ready to kick things off fresh.
As mentioned at the start of this tutorial, you will lose every single bit of data on your iPhone or iPad during the downgrade process. If you updated to iOS 8, played around for a while, and found things to be unbearable, too frustrating,or otherwise not an improvement over iOS 7.1.2, you can still downgrade your iPhone or iPad from iOS 8 back to iOS 7.1.2. But this is almost certainly a short-lived opportunity, so if you have any intention on doing it you’ll want to move quick.
A few important notes: downgrading is not supported by Apple and things can go wrong. Also, you can only restore iOS 7.1.2 backups to an iOS 7.1.2 device, you can not restore a backup made from iOS 8 to an iOS 7 device. That means if you don’t have an iOS 7.1.2 backup laying around still, you won’t be able to restore your stuff and the device will have to be setup as new. That alone should be a hefty deterrent to most, since restoring from backups is usually pretty important, so you’ll probably want to identify your iOS backups in iTunes and make sure you have one, if not, you’ll probably want to stay with iOS 8. Also, devices that ship with iOS 8 preinstalled like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are not eligible for downgrading to iOS 7.1.2 at all.
Though downgrading is fairly easy, it’s considered somewhat advanced due to the restrictions associated with it, and the limited time window that allows for downgrades. You can use this signing status page to determine if Apple is still allowing downgrades on a particular version of iOS or not and on a per device basis.
How to Downgrade Back to iOS 7.1.2 from iOS 8
Be sure to back up your device before beginning this process.
- BACK UP YOUR iOS 8 DEVICE before anything else – do not skip this – this insures that you can restore your stuff to iOS 8 if you have a problem with the downgrading process
- Download the iOS 7.1.2 IPSW here for your device and save it to an accessible location like the user desktop
- Open iTunes on the Mac / PC and connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the USB cable
- Choose the device in iTunes and go to the Summary tab
- Hold down the OPTION key for Mac OS X (use the SHIFT key for Windows) and click on the “Update” button
- Navigate to and select the firmware .ipsw file for iOS 7.1.2 that you downloaded
- Choose “Update” again, iTunes will verify the update with Apple and the downgrade process will begin – if this failed you either used the wrong IPSW file, or the downgrade signing window for iOS 7.1.2 firmware has closed
The downgrade process can take a while depending on a variety of things, when it’s finished the device will be back to the familiar ‘new setup’ screen as if it was brand new. You’ll then want to restore your previously made iOS 7.1.2 backup to get your stuff back. Again, iOS 8 backups do not work on iOS 7.1.2 devices.
If for whatever reason you’re having trouble with this method and you know the signing window is still open and that you have the correct firmware files, you can also use the Restore based downgrade, which is method #2 here , but it shouldn’t be necessary.
If you do go back to iOS 7.1.2, you’ll want to be cautious with future iOS software updates and stay there. The downgrade ability will surely close soon and that means that future updates with iOS will be a one way street.
Part 1. Are you well prepared for iOS 15 downgrade?
1.1 Do back up your device
Backup iDevice with Dr.Fone
- 1 Connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer.
- 2 Handpick the type of data, or select all.
- 3 Click on the “Backup” button to backup device data locally.
Unique features:
- • Backup an entire iOS device, including its contacts, call logs, messages, photos, videos, etc.
- • Backup and restore your data from one device to another (or one iOS version to another) without any compatibility issue.
- • Extract an existing iCloud or iTunes backup and restore it to the device of our choice.
- • Preview data from a backup file to restore it selectively. Existing data will be retained while restoring the backup.
Backup iDevice with iTunes
- 1 Launch an updated version of iTunes, and connect the iOS device to it.
- 2 Go to its “Summary” tab and find the relevant option under the “Backups” tab.
- 3 Click on the “Back Up Now” button to save the backup of your device.
Things to note:
- • iTunes can’t restore a backup of a higher version of a lower version. Hence you must take a backup of your device before upgrading it to iOS 15.
- • No provision to preview the data and selectively restore it.
- • iTunes erases the existing data on your iPhone while restoring a backup.
1.2 Understand the time limit for iOS downgrade
The entire process of downgrading an iOS version is time-sensitive, which a lot of users are not aware of. Let’s talk about this in detail.
- If you have an iOS beta version installed, then you can downgrade iOS beta to a previous stable version anytime you want (till the official public iOS version is released).
- After the release of the stable public iOS version, you only have 14 days to downgrade your device to a previous existing iOS version.
1.3 Select the correct version to downgrade from iOS 15
Ideally, you can only downgrade iOS 15 to a previous stable version only. For instance, if you wish to do an iOS 15 downgrade, then you can only go back to its previous stable release, which is signed by Apple. You can visit IPSW.me to check if the compatible firmware is available.
1.4 Know how to downgrade to a version no longer signed by Apple (if necessary)
As you know, in order to downgrade iOS 15, you need to take the needed steps within 14 days of its official release. Also, users can only roll back to a previous stable version. Though, if you have passed the 14-day duration and want to downgrade to a version no longer signed by Apple, then you need to use a third-party tool. By taking the assistance of tools like TinyUmbrella or TaigOne Downgrader, you can install any supported iOS version on the device. They mimic Apple’s signature, letting us install personalized firmware (iOS version) on iDevices.
Though the entire process would be pretty technical, and it might not yield positive results. Since these third-party tools are not supported by Apple, you need to jailbreak your device to do it. This is not recommended as it will affect the warranty of your device and you would no longer have access to the official iOS releases as well. Furthermore, it will make your device vulnerable to unwanted security threats.
The first iOS 15 developer beta was released earlier this week for registered Apple developers. The update comes with plenty of new features and improvements. However, it also has its fair share of bugs, since it’s in beta. We’ve already posted a handy guide on how to install the iOS 15 beta on supported iPhones, but if you’re unhappy, then we’ve got a downgrade guide for you.
If the bugs in the developer beta are too much for you, then here’s how you can downgrade from iOS 15 beta to iOS 14. The latest stable iOS 14 version from Apple at the time of writing is iOS 14.8.
Things you need
Before we start with the step-by-step instructions, you’ll need the following things.
- A Mac or Windows PC
- The iOS 14.8 IPSW file, which you can get from our Downloads section.
- A previous backup of your iPhone or iPad on iOS 14. This will help you restore your iPhone to how it was before installing iOS 15 beta.
- An iOS 15 beta backup for documents, photos, etc that you can save on iCloud. You cannot restore the iOS 15 backup when you downgrade to iOS 14.
Note: If you didn’t take a backup of your iPhone before updating to iOS 15 beta, then you may have to set up your iPhone as new.
How to downgrade from iOS 15 beta to iOS 14.8
You will need to turn off the Find My feature on your iPhone running iOS 15 beta before you downgrade. To do this, launch the Settings app, tap on your Profile name, select Find My > Find My iPhone and then turn off the feature. Once this is done, here’s what you need to do.
1) Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC using the USB cable. You may need to unlock your device for it to be recognized on your computer.
3) Open Finder on Mac and iTunes on Windows. The iPhone should appear on the computer and Finder or iTunes will notify you that the connected iPhone is in Recovery mode.
4) On your Mac, click on Restore iPhone while holding the Option key. Windows users will need to press and hold the Shift key while doing this.
5) You should now be able to select the downloaded iOS 14.8 IPSW file for your iPhone that you downloaded earlier. Click Open.
6) A pop-up should appear asking for confirmation. If you’re on macOS Big Sur or later, you may encounter a Restore and Update option where it’ll automatically download the latest iOS 14 software update. You can cancel this by simply unplugging the iPhone and reconnecting it. Now you should see the Restore button only.
The downgrade process should now commence, and could take a while to finish. Once completed, you can restore from a backup to gain access to all your data.
Wrapping up
Although it may be exciting to try out the new iOS 15 developer beta, you should know that you’ll experience several bugs. If you don’t want to use a buggy iOS, then it’s best to downgrade to a stable version. Luckily, it’s quite easy to downgrade back to iOS 14, and we hope this guide will help you do just that.
Did you upgrade your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 15/iPadOS 15 and realize that the new features are not for you? Maybe you don’t like how it affected your old iPhone or iPad’s battery life or performance? Follow our guide on how to downgrade iOS 15 to iOS 14.8 on your device using Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows.

Downgrade iOS 15 to iOS 14.8
Requirements
Here are some important requirements before you start:
- Back up your iOS 15 device using iCloud or Mac (Finder) / Windows (iTunes). The downgrade is a safe process, but it is better to be safe than sorry and have a backup of your data in case something goes wrong.
- Make sure that macOS is upgraded to the latest version i.e. it supports iOS 14.8 (currently macOS Big Sur 11.5.2). If you are using iTunes on Windows, make sure that it is updated to the latest version.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apple ID > Find My and disable Find My iPhone.
- Make sure that that your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is fully charged so that you do not run out of battery during the process.
Steps
- Download the correct iOS 14.8 IPSW firmware file for your iPhone or iPad. Currently, the latest stable release is iOS 15 and iOS 14.8 is the only older version that is being signed by Apple. You can download iOS 14.8 or iPadOS 14.8 from the links at the end of this guide.
- Once you download the firmware file, connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer using a cable. Launch Finder (Mac), or iTunes (Windows). When your device appears in the sidebar, click it. If you see a ‘trust’ button, click it and enter the passcode on your connected device.
- Put your iOS device into DFU mode. If your device has Face ID, use this guide. For other devices, you can follow this guide.
- You should now see a ‘Restore iPhone’ button. While holding the shift key (on Windows) or option key (on Mac), click this button and browse to the firmware file that you downloaded from step 1. If it says that you have to turn off Find my iPhone, go to Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone on your device and disable it.
Once you set up your device and download and install all your apps, make sure to go to Settings > General > Software Update and disable Automatic Updates so you do not have to go through the downgrade process again.
Wondering how to downgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 4? Maybe you rushed out to test your app on the next big thing but now have to deal with a bug in the here and now version, and you don’t want to buy an additional device, or maybe you just don’t have what you need yet and you’d prefer to wait for a later beta. Either way, it is possible to go back to iOS 4. Last year we showed you how to downgrade from the beta version of iOS 4 as well. I am pleasantly surprised with how good the first beta version of iOS 5 is, but if for any reason you need to go back to iOS 4, we’ll show you a couple ways after the break!
I don’t recommend downgrading firmware unless you really need to. It can be a painful process that most people won’t like dealing with. But if you need to, it is completely possible.
Downgrade via XCode (Mac Only + dev license)
Downgrading via XCode is probably the easiest way to roll back to a previous version of iOS. The bad part is that it can sometimes put you into a never ending DFU loop. You can typically use iRecovery to kick you out of it.
- Download the firmware version you’d like to downgrade to. For most people, this will probably be iOS 4.3.3 so simply find and download it via *iClarified*.
- Open XCode and from the top select Window and then Organizer.
- You should now see your device. Under software version, it will show you are on iOS 5. Choose to restore from Other Version.
- You can then navigate to the iOS bundle you’d like to restore to that you downloaded and saved in step 1.
- Let XCode do its thing. If you’re lucky, you’re done. If not, go to the next step. (aka if you get any error message or get thrown for a loop via DFU craziness.)
- You’ll need to use a program like iRecovery which is linked above. I use Faster iRecovery as opposed to the original. Also, download the libusb files for Mac as well. iRecovery uses these.
- Simply run iRecovery after you’d downloaded the libusb files and it should throw your phone out of recovery mode.
- After this, simply restore in iTunes and you should be downgraded. The first time you may get an error, simply restore again like you normally would and it should downgrade successfully.
As a side note, PC users can also use iRecovery and libusb if they get stuck in a DFU loop.
Downgrade via iTunes beta with TinyUmbrella (Mac and PC)
You need iTunes 10.5 beta for this, which is also available via Apple’s dev portal (and maybe elsewhere if you scan the internet)
You also need TinyUmbrella
- Mac download
- PC download
This is the route PC users will have to take. Mac users may also choose to do it this way if they don’t have XCode or the SDK. Start this process with your device NOT connected to your computer.
- Install iTunes 10.5 beta and TinyUmbrella
- Then open TinyUmbrella and click on Advanced.
- Uncheck the box that says Set Host to Cydia On Exit.
- Restart your computer.
- Now plug in your device and turn back on your computer.
- After your computer restarts, you’ll need to go into iTunes. It may bring up error messages again. That’s okay. Just ignore them for now.
- You’ll need to put your device into DFU mode. Refer to our DFU mode instructions if you’re not sure how to do this.
- If you don’t do it correctly, just try again. When you get your device into DFU mode correctly, iTunes will pop up and tell you the device can’t be used until it is restored.
- You can now restore your device like normal.

Can I revert to older iOS?
Apple generally stops signing the previous version of iOS a few days after a new version is released. This means that it’s often possible to downgrade back to your previous version of iOS for a few days after you upgrade — assuming the latest version was just released and you upgraded to it quickly.
How do I revert to an older version of iOS?
How to downgrade to an older version of iOS on your iPhone or iPad Click Restore on the Finder popup. Click Restore and Update to confirm. Click Next on the iOS 13 Software Updater. Click Agree to accept the Terms and Conditions and start downloading iOS 13.
Quite a few users who updated their M1 Macs to Big Sur 11.2 recently are regretting having done so. Those who rely on SoftRAID to access an external RAID system are among the most obvious, as the current release of SoftRAID is incompatible with 11.2, and lost all access to any disk requiring it. If that happens to contain your backups, then your Mac is in trouble.
But no worries: according to many accounts, all you have to do is to restore your internal disk to 11.1 using a snapshot. The only snag with those accounts is that it doesn’t appear to be true. Neither of my updated M1 Macs has any trace of a snapshot of the 11.1 System volume, now that they’ve been updated to 11.2. So what strategies might be open to you if you need to revert to 11.1?
Revert to a System snapshot of 11.1
According to these instructions given by SoftRAID, you can enter 1 True Recovery (1TR) and revert to a previous Time Machine snapshot of 11.1.
To try this, press and hold the Power button until the display shows Loading Startup Options, then release it. This takes you to the Startup Options screen. Select the Options icon, then click Continue underneath it. In the macOS Recovery window select your user icon and click Next. Enter your password in the dialog, select Restore from Time Machine and click Continue. Click Continue in the next window. Time Machine System Restore will then list Restore Sources. To restore from a previous backup, select your backup disk and click Continue. Then select the backup which you wish to restore. To revert to the previous version of macOS, select the last snapshot containing that version, then click Continue. A dialog should then invite you to install that version of macOS, which you would accept. The snapshot should then be restored, and your Mac will reboot from that version of macOS.
However, at present neither the macOS installer nor Time Machine keeps snapshots of the System volume which you can restore using this method. Instead, when you do try to select a Time Machine backup – assuming that one is accessible – you’re told to install macOS instead, which of course will merely deliver 11.2 again.
Boot from an external disk with 11.1
Although I’m not sure how this might help you revert your internal disk to 11.1, it might at least give you a way of restoring access to whatever broke in the update to 11.2. Unfortunately, as I’ll describe in a separate article, once your Mac has been updated to 11.2, it appears impossible to boot it from an external disk with 11.1 installed, presumably because of firmware incompatibility.
If you do try this, you’re likely to find that your Mac gets stuck in a boot loop because of a kernel panic. This is the result of the booter being unable to find IOAESAccelerator, and can only be resolved by shutting down, disconnecting the external disk, starting up in 1TR, and setting it to start up from the internal boot disk again. Your Mac should restart normally, back into 11.2 again.
Download the 11.1 full installer
When Apple released the update to 11.2, it removed all access to the full installer for 11.1. Unless you have a copy saved on an accessible disk, you will thus be unable to obtain 11.1 to create a bootable installer.
Restore in DFU mode
One sure way to restore your M1 Mac to 11.1 is to wipe it completely and restore the firmware and software for 11.1, in DFU mode. To do this, you require another Mac running at least a late version of Catalina, a USB-C or compatible cable to connect the two Macs back to back, and a copy of Apple Configurator 2 installed on the other Mac. The process may appear daunting at first, but it turns out to be relatively quick and simple, provided that you follow Apple’s instructions carefully.
Before attempting this, it’s worth downloading the 11.1 IPSW file, athough Configurator will do that for you if necessary. Mr Macintosh maintains a list of links to available IPSW files which make that straightforward.
If you’re unable to perform a restore in DFU mode, then the only remaining option is to get an Apple Service Provider to do this for you. Unless you’re in an area in which Apple’s stores remain open, that could be far from convenient.
Should you update an M1 Mac?
Currently, the only reliable way to restore an older version of macOS to an M1 Mac is using DFU mode, which inevitably wipes the entire contents of its internal storage. If you can’t or won’t do that, then you should be extremely cautious before installing any further macOS updates. This applies most importantly to those who rely on kernel or system extensions, which are at greatest risk of being disabled when macOS is updated.
Until Apple provides a more accessible way to restore the previous System volume, anyone who can’t wipe their M1 Mac and restore it in DFU mode would be wisest not to install any further updates to macOS.
If you’ve tried Windows 11 and for some reason want to go back to its predecessor, timing is key. The clock begins ticking as soon as you move to Windows 11. Here’s what to do.
So, you’ve installed Windows 11, kicked the proverbial tires and taken it for spin — and now you want to go back to tried and trusty Windows 10 until the new-OS dust settles. Can you uninstall it without having to reinstall your old operating system from scratch?
The answer depends on how long ago you installed Windows 11 and how you did so.
Let’s assume first that you didn’t use the Insider program to get Windows 11. (And you didn’t adjust your registry to manually go around any hardware block.) Instead, you were offered the upgrade because your PC had the right processor, TPM chip, and other necessary items. If so, and it’s not been more than 10 days since you installed Windows 11, you can go to Settings>System>Recovery and choose “Go Back.” This will revert your computer to the Windows 10 version you had before installing Windows 11. You’ll be asked if you want to check first for updates to Windows 11; decline that and follow the wizard to return to Windows 10.
Reboot and you’re all set.
What if you didn’t intend to install Windows 11 and paused it mid-installation? If you’re at the point where the operating system is prompting you to reboot to finish the move to Windows 11, it’s safer to reboot, complete the installation, then follow the guidance above to roll back to Windows 10.
Note: Windows 11 should merely offer you the new feature release, it should not automatically install; you have to specifically choose to install it. That said, I’ve heard of at least one person who said they merely clicked on “check for updates” and the installation started. I’ve seen this sometimes happen when third-party security software made selections a user didn’t intend. In my own experience, I’ve not had this happen. Even so, I strongly recommend that you never click on “check for updates” on an unmanaged computer when you’re unsure whether you’ve taken any action to defer or block updates. “Unmanaged” is defined by Microsoft as not being managed by a patching tool such as WSUS, SCCM, Intune, or other third-party patching platforms. (If you somehow wound up with Windows 11 without agreeing to install it, I’d love to hear about it in the Askwoody forums.)
To avoid inadvertently updating to Windows 11, remember that if you’ve installed the September cumulative updates (or later), the TargetReleaseVersion setting now offers a new way to define which OS version you want. If you have group policy on Windows 10 Professional, drill down to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update>Windows update for business. Look for “Select the target Feature Update Version.” Click to enable it and enter Windows 10 in the box, “Which Windows product would you like to receive feature updates for? E.g. Windows 10.” (If you are on Windows 10 Home version, you can use the registry key method to do likewise.)
User can define which OS version they want using the TargetReleaseVersion setting.
If you’ve been using Windows 11 for less than 10 days, you can review how long you still have to uninstall it by querying the value. From an elevated command prompt (type in cmd, right-mouse click and click on run as administrator), you can then check the value of the uninstall window setting by using this DISM command:
DISM /Online /Get-OSUninstallWindow
If you’ve not made any changes to the defaults this value will be 10. If you’d like this to be longer, use the following command and set the value to be longer than 2 days and less than 60 days.
DISM /Online /Set-OSUninstallWindow /Value:[days]
Extending that number past 10 days gives you more time to evaluate Windows 11. Just take note of when the period ends so you can roll back to Windows 10 easily. It’s also important to remember that the prior version will be saved in a file called windows.old, so don’t delete that file. Because it’s usually a large file, it will be flagged by any file-size program.
If it’s been longer than the default of 10 days and you no longer have the option to roll back to Windows 10, you have two choices: You can stay on Windows 11 or reinstall Windows 10. If you remain with Windows 11, you might want to install the optional end-of-the-month non-security updates, as Microsoft will be sliding in fixes in an accelerated fashion for a few weeks.
If you find there is some issue that you cannot live with — and you have no idea when it will be fixed — your only other option is to do a clean install of Windows 10. (Because you still have a digital license for either Windows 10 or Windows 11 you don’t need to worry about finding a product key that you can’t probably find anymore.)
First make sure you have a full backup of your data since will be installing on top of the existing data. You can download the Windows 10 media from the Windows 10 .iso download site and then set the computer to boot from the flash drive. Typically, I find this is often the hardest part of the process — finding the combination of keys that allows you into the bios to force the system to boot from the flash drive.
Once it finds the Windows 10 .iso file, your PC will install Windows 10. You’ll next want to go into Device Manager (click on search and type “device manager” to call it up). Look for any hardware that has exclamation marks — a sign that something is missing a driver. If you are missing drivers, I recommend that you avoid random searches online for missing drivers; go to the manufacturer’s site and find drivers there. Most vendors allow you to scan the computer system or search for your exact model to allow you to install the drivers you need.
More often than not, any missing device drivers will be added after installing motherboard or firmware updates. If you built your own computer years ago, hopefully you placed the drivers you needed on a saved drive or flash drive for just this purpose.

Here’s how to downgrade iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 to iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 on your compatible iPhone or iPad device. This process is the perfect simplistic tonic for anyone who has taken a leap of faith with iOS14.3/iPadOS 14.3 but now wants to be running an earlier version.
For a lot of people, iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 are the pinnacles of what’s currently being offered by Apple on its mobile devices. However, for others, there is a reason why they want to roll back and continue to use a previous version. This process is going to take you through the steps necessary to achieve that.
Step 1: First and foremost, ensure that you are running the latest version of iTunes on your PC or Mac. If you are running a Mac with macOS Catalina or the latest Big Sur release, then you don’t need to worry as it’s integrated into the Finder app.
Step 2: You will need to download the correct IPSW iOS/iPadOS 14.2 file that has been built by Apple and that is intended for your specific device. You can grab that file from here.
Step 3: Ensure that the Find My feature is disabled on your iPhone or iPad. This is a requirement. Launch Settings > iCloud > Find My and toggle the switch into the Off position. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
Step 4: Connect your device to your PC or Mac and launch iTunes if it doesn’t run automatically. If you’re running macOS Catalina or Big Sur, then launch a new Finder window. Put your device into DFU mode using the quick guides below (if you don’t already know how to do it):
- iPhone 8 / 8 Plus, iPhone X / XR / XS / XS Max / 11 / 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max / 12 / 12 mini / 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max, or 2018/2020 iPad Pro owners can follow this guide.
- iPhone 7 / 7 Plus owners: Enter DFU Mode On iPhone 7 Or iPhone 7 Plus, Here’s How
- If you have an iPhone 6s / 6s Plus or any other iPad, then follow the instructions here.
Step 5: Once the device has been recognized in DFU mode, head into iTunes or Finder and press and hold the Option key on a Mac or the Shift key on a PC and click the Restore iPhone/iPad option.
Step 6: Choose the relevant IPSW file that you downloaded earlier. Allow iTunes/Finder to do its business and ultimately leave you with an iPhone or iPad that has been downgraded from iOS/iPadOS 14.3 to the version included within the IPSW file that you’ve chosen.
And there you have it. You now have an iPhone or iPad left running iOS/iPadOS 14.3.
