How to rename favorites in apple maps

By Emily Bell

There must be some really obvious trick which has escaped me.

If I favorite a marked location on MacOS Maps, or on iOS Maps, I can’t see how I can give it a custom name.

Tapping or clicking on Info doesn’t seem to help, and I can’t see any other method.

I have tried the technique of selecting favorites from the search bar (in MacOS), selecting edit and trying, but the text remains uneditable.

I would even consider a third party app if there is one.

I am using MacOS Mojave, and iOS 12.

To rename favorites in Maps on macOS (source):

  1. Click on the magnifying glass in the search field
  2. Click Favorites
  3. Click “Edit” in the bottom right
  4. Click on a Favorite’s name to modify it
  5. Press return or click out of the editing field, then click “Done”

To rename favorites in Maps on iOS:

  1. Swipe up the “card” at the bottom that contains recent locations
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap on “Favorites”
  3. Swipe from right to left across the favorite whose name you want to change, then tap “Edit Name”
  4. Enter a new name, then tap “Save”

I’ve tried both of these methods on macOS 10.14.2 and iOS 12.1.2 and confirmed that they both work.

What’s coming?

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

Changes are coming to the Maps app in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. These include the introduction of cycling directions that will consist of bike lanes, paths, and roads. Electric vehicle routing is also incoming.

Apple also plans on introducing expanding travel guides in the new software releases. The guides will automatically update when new places get added.

  • Hello nice people! I just made the switch from Android to iPhone – and loving it so far! Now, I think I may have discovered a quirk. and I’m not sure if anyone else is also experiencing it. Here goes:

In the Maps app, after I bookmarked a location, I find it impossible to rename the bookmarked location. Well, technically, Maps allows me to “rename” the bookmark, but there’s no way I could click on “Save” or “OK” to accept the change. Therefore, it’s impossible to actually rename any bookmarks.

Does anyone here experience this too? Is there a workaround?

  • Re: Renaming a Bookmark in Maps Application

There is no glitch in this situation. You simply go to your bookmarked pins in the Maps application, then tap “Edit,” tap the name of the pin you want to rename, rename it in the field provided, and then go back to “Bookmarks” by tapping the “Bookmarks” button in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. You will find that the dropped pin has been renamed and that there just isn’t a “Save” button. Hope this helps.

  • Ok, I’ve figured how this works (and not work). Using the drop-pin method of creating a bookmark, Maps allows me to rename the bookmark to whatever I want it to be. But if the bookmark was created from a CONTACT, then it will refuse to allow me to rename the bookmarked location.

You see, I bookmark my mother-in-law’s place and it seems all wierd to see her full name in my bookmark page. I’d like to rename it to something like “Mother-in-Law” instead – of which Maps will then refuse to allow me to rename.

My current workaround is to create a “contact bookmark”, then view it on the map. After which, put a new drop pin just fractionally beside the “old” bookmark. Now if I created a new bookmark from this drop pin, I can then rename it.

Strange, but I still do see this as a bug as Maps will allow me to edit the name of a “contact” bookmark but refuse to allow me to save it.

Apple has slowly been releasing brand-new mapping data across the U.S., and it’s more detailed and accurate than ever before. But a great mobile maps experience is about more than just great map data. With iOS 13, Apple’s adding a slew of useful new features, and the most useful are probably the ability to mark locations as favorites and build sharable collections.

Both functions are somewhat related, but act a little differently. Favorites are there to provide quick access on your own device, while Collections group locations together and can be shared with others. Here’s how they work.

    Apple Maps Favorites

When you first open Apple Maps, the card at the bottom of the screen will show a horizontally-scrolling list of your Favorites right beneath the search bar. This prime placement signifies the intended use: quick, always-available access to the places you use most.

If you have designed your Home and Work addresses in your contact card, you’ll see those first. Then you’ll see a list of other Favorites and an Add button at the end.

You can add a location by tapping that Add button, which brings up a search interface. Just search for the location you want and tap the (+) sign on the right.

Add Favorites by searching from the main Maps interface, or from the bottom of a location info card.

You can also add locations to your Favorites by selecting any location on the map. This brings up that location’s info card, with directions at the top, followed by photos, hours, address, Yelp reviews, and so on. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page, and you’ll see the option to Add to Favorites.

    Apple Maps Collections

The simplest way to start a collection is to tap here.

Collections are similar to Favorites in that they’re meant to provide quick and easy access to locations without needing to use search, but they function a little differently. A collection is a freeform group of locations that you give any name you wish, a list that can be recalled at any time. Unlike Favorites, which are personal to you, Collections can be shared to other people via Messages, email, AirDrop, or even added to Reminders or Notes or shared on social media.

Create collections of sight-seeing locations for a trip out of town, of interesting restaurants to try in your area, of all the important stops on a business trip, or fun summer activities for the kids. Any related group of locations could make a good Collection.

To create a new Collection, scroll down past Favorites to the Collections section and tap New Collection.

You’ll start by giving your Collection a name, then tap Create in the upper right corner.

Now your Collection will be in your list, but empty. Tap it, then tap Add a Place to open a search window. Find the location you want to add and tap the (+) button to add it.

As with Favorites, you can also add locations to Collections from a location’s info card. Scroll down past the directions and photos, and tap on the Add to button. A card will pop up showing all your existing Collections, just pick the one you want to add it to. Or, if you want to start a new collection, tap New Collection and you’ll be asked to name the Collection with your location already added to it.

You can also add to or create a Collection from a location’s info card.

To share a Collection, simply tap on the one you wish to share, then tap the share button (the box with the arrow pointing out of it) at the bottom of the screen. This will bring the standard iOS share sheet, showing people and apps with which you can share the collection.

Running into trouble trying to rename a pin in Apple Maps? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. While Apple Maps supports saved pins and label renaming, it isn’t the most intuitive thing to find.

    Related:

Pins are, of course, a useful way to save locations to your Favorites or a collection. But that usefulness only extends as far as your Maps organization goes. So here’s how to rename a pin in Maps.

What are pins in Apple Maps?

Before you learn how to rename pins in Apple Maps, it’s useful to do a quick rundown on what they are (and what they aren’t).

Open up Maps on your iPhone or iPad. Then, just tap and hold on a location. If there’s no business or point of interest there, you should see a pin appear with the name “Marked Location.”

Not in the right place? Just tap and drag it to a new location. Note that you can only have one pin at a time. Tapping and holding on a new locale will remove your previous pin.

Pins are useful for navigation, since you can simply drop a pin somewhere and get directions to that location without typing in an actual address.

They’re temporary by design, but you can save pins to a collection or your Favorites for later reference.

How to rename a pin in Apple Maps

By default, pins will be named “marked location” unless you pinned a point of interest. But you don’t have to settle for that vague label. You can actually rename it.

The easiest way to rename a dropped pin is to save it to a collection.

How to rename favorites in apple mapsThe easiest way to rename a pin is to save it to a collection.

    • Drop a pin in Apple Maps.
    • Tap on the pin to bring up the options pane.
    • Swipe up on this menu to see more options.
    • From here, just click the Add to… button.
    • This will prompt you to save the pin to an existing collection or to create a new one.
    • Once you choose one of those two, you’ll see the option to add a name for your pinned location.

How to rename favorites in apple mapsIf you commute to a pin frequently, you can also rename it as a favorite.

Alternatively, you can also save a pin to Favorites and rename it later. Here’s how.

    • Drop a pin in Apple Maps.
    • Tap on the pin to bring up the options pane.
    • Swipe up on this menu to see more options.
    • Tap on Add to Favorites.
    • Now, the next time you open a Maps window, the pin will be there.
    • Near the Favorites tab, click on See All.
    • Tap the “i” icon next to your Marked Location.
    • Then, tap on the Label text field to edit its name.
    • Tap on Done when you’re finished.

Collections versus Favorites in Apple Maps

So you can use either collections or favorites to rename pins in Apple Maps. But which one should you choose?

It doesn’t really matter, but it’s worth knowing what each feature is intended for. Collections are lists of places that you can refer to later, making them great for specific categories like “restaurants to try” or “places to visit in San Diego.”

Favorites, on the other hand, are meant to be locations that you travel to frequently. That includes your home and work. Because of that, it’s worth keeping random locations off of the favorites list unless you want to see it every time you reopen Apple Maps.

    A couple of additional tips

As we mentioned earlier, pinned locations will often carry the name of whatever business is located there. Drop a pin on a Costco and the label will say “Costco.”

The same goes for addresses. If you drop a pin on a location that has a physical mailing address, you may see that address pop up as its name. (You can rename the pin in either case.)

It’s also worth noting that pins can be useful for saving addresses or locations that are missing from Apple Maps. But it’s not your only option for correcting mistakes within Maps.

You can also add a missing place or recommend a correction directly within the Maps app. Just click on the “I” icon on the primary Apple Maps menu. From there, you can select Add a Missing Place or Report an Issue.

In some regions, Apple also sources data from third parties like TomTom or OpenStreetMaps. You could, theoretically, add a missing place or new address to those locations. But since Apple is working to source all of its mapping data itself, the company may drop those third-party data providers in the future.
