Here’s something you probably didn’t know you were doing wrong: getting a good night’s sleep.
According to a poll conducted earlier this year, more than 75 percent of Americans don’t get as much sleep as they should, meaning more of us than ever before are spending our days tired, spaced out, and not nearly as productive as we could be due to lost hours that should have been spent slumbering in the sack.
This is where sleep trackers come in. By monitoring key vitals like your heartbeat, how often you fuss about, and the time you actually fell asleep as opposed to when you got in bed, a combination of hardware and software applications can calculate the optimal time that you’re in and out of REM, and wake you up accordingly.
For example, if you’ve ever woken up from a nap feeling more like you got hit by a truck than laying peacefully on the couch for two hours, it’s because instead of waking up at the lull of a 90-minute cycle, you crashed through the middle of REM and came to during the most vital part of your rest.
These apps and peripherals can help to better optimize how you recharge your batteries each night, and be sure that whenever you wake up, whether it’s only been six hours or ten, you’ll feel just as refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
Motion X 24/7
MotionX 24/7 is a fitness app on the surface, but right below that it’s so much more.
Yes, you can track your weight with it, health goals, diet, etc, but where the app really shines is in its added sleep tracking features. By turning on the sleep tracker, you can not only tell the app how long your sleep goal is for the night, but it will also activate the microphone and motion sensor at the same time.
Either stick your phone in an armband or place it next to your pillow, and the app will keep a close eye on how much movement you’re making, whether you’re snoring/suffering from any degree of sleep apnea, and use that data to form a broad picture of when you’re in what’s called “deep sleep” (or REM), and when you’re ready to be woken up in the lightest cycle of rest.
Far and away my favorite feature of MotionX has to be the way in which it actually wakes you up after it’s determined the optimal moment within your set schedule. Instead of a loud, clanging alarm bell that jolts you out of your blissful state, MotionX will lightly start playing the sound of trees rustling and birds whistling, and slowly bring it up louder and louder until it detects you’re finally awake.
Although I can’t accurately explain just how pleasant the sensation is in words, once you experience it for yourself, you’ll wonder how you ever woke up any other way.
We also like MotionX because although you can connect it to a number of different fitness peripherals if you want to, the app works just fine as a standalone program using just the sensors already installed in your smartphone.
You can download MotionX 24/7 on the iOS App Store for only $0.99 cents.
Apple Watch/FitBit/Jawbone UP
While there are already a million fitness trackers out there, only a few are equipped with the right hardware and software pairings to help you get the most both out of the energy you spend in your workouts, along with the time you use to recover.
All the peripherals mentioned here come with both heartbeat sensors and gyroscopes attached in the wrist, which communicate these signals back to their respective apps on your phone to keep your sleep tracking up to date.
Though it hasn’t hit yet, Apple says we can expect Apple Watch to coordinate with iOS’ integrated Apple Health for sleep tracking options in a future update, while third-party wearables like the FitBit and Jawbone can connect to a dozen different programs on the Google Play or iTunes App Store today.
Some of our preferred choices include MotionX 24/7 (mentioned above), as well as SleepBot, Sleep as Android (for the Google faithful), and SleepCycle. FitBit also comes with its own proprietary sleep tracking software, which can be accessed from your account on the company’s user portal and main website.
Sense
Unlike other trackers, Sense is an entirely independent sleep-centric product, designed from day one to help to detect whether or not your bedroom is in the ideal state to ensure you’re set up to have the best night of rest you can get.
By measuring environmental factors like ambient noise, extra light, temperature/humidity, and even the amount of particulate matter in the air (dust, dirt, anything that might clog your sinuses in the night), Sense will give you far and away the most detailed sleep report imaginable. This includes not only how much sleep you’re getting or what part of the 90-minute sleep cycle you woke up during, but also many of the other, less immediately noticeable nuances that could be adding up over weeks or months to contribute to a constant state of overall exhaustion.
Sense is great if wearing your fitness tracker or smartwatch to bed sounds too burdensome, or if the the idea of putting a phone next to your pillow sounds like a recipe for a cracked screen on the floor in the morning.
Sitting next to the admittedly gorgeous base station is what the company calls the “Sleep Pill”, which is a small device that connects to your phone and provides accurate realtime data on the status of your sleep as it’s happening in the moment.
By combining motion data with the status of your sleeping environment, the key to a better night’s rest is waiting just over the next fluffy cloud.
You can order your Sense and Sleep Pill combo today for $99 off the company’s website.
So the next time you’re getting ready for bed; turn off that screen, pick up a book, and strap on your heartbeat sensor, because your dreams will never be sweeter than they are with a proper night’s rest.
The quality and length of your sleep will almost always dictate how the rest of your day unfolds. Sleeping fewer hours increases your chances of spending the day in a tired and cranky state, while having a restful night’s sleep contributes greatly to being alert and productive. Luckily, if you want to track your sleep patterns to figure out how you can improve your circadian rhythm, Samsung Health has you covered.
When connected to a wearable device like a Galaxy Gear smartwatch or Fitbit, Samsung Health can accurately track your sleeping patterns based on time and activity, along with any movements you make while asleep. If you don’t have a smartwatch or fitness band, however, the app is still able to keep track of both your sleep and wake times, though the process can be a little more involved. I’ll show you how to do just that below.
Step 1: Record Your Sleep
Samsung Health’s sleep tracking feature is largely automated — it will kick in by itself once you put your device down as you turn in for the night. You don’t have to keep it in bed with you, just put it wherever you normally would at night. We found that the app starts recording your sleep within 30 minutes of hitting the sack, usually faster.
Interestingly, if you wake up in the middle of the night to check briefly your device, Samsung Health won’t register the time you rose if you only use your handset for less than five minutes and go back to sleep. Once you do wake up for good come morning, the app will will register your wake time from the moment you pick up your phone to access it.
Step 2: Tweak Your Sleep Time
If you usually access your phone as soon as you wake up to check for emails and messages, or simply disable the alarm you’ve set, chances are, Samsung Health will correctly record your wake time. If your morning routine involves performing other tasks like eating breakfast and brushing your teeth before checking your device, however, you’ll most likely need to edit your wake time for a more accurate recording.
So if Samsung Health recorded the time and length of your slumber correctly, simply tap on the tiny check mark button on the upper-right within the Sleep tile inside the app, and you’re good to go. If you need to correct your sleep and wake times, however, tap on the Sleep tile, then edit the time by adjusting the timetable on the following page.
Besides time adjustment, you can also rate your sleep quality by tapping on the stars — with one being the lowest, and five being the highest — along the bottom. Once you’ve correctly edited your sleep times, tap on “Save” to record them.
Step 3: Edit Sleep Time Target (Optional)
Samsung Health automatically preconfigures your sleep time target based on your profile information such as age and gender. However, these targets may not accurately reflect your daily routine. If your work schedule requires you to work night shifts, for instance, having a sleep target of 11 PM to 6 AM may not be realistic.
If that’s the case, you’ll need to customize your sleep time target within Samsung Health, which can be accomplished by tapping on the Sleep tile, then tapping on the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner -and selecting “Set target.” From there, simply swipe on the time bars for both “Bedtime” and Wake-up time” to set your sleep target.

Are they worthwhile? “Yes, they are,” says sleep medicine expert Colleen Lance, MD.
“While digital apps and devices can’t replace formal testing, they can give your doctor a general idea of your total sleep time, your sleep/wake cycle and how disruptive your sleep may be.”
This can help your doctor decide whether to refer you to a sleep specialist or for a sleep study.
When to consider tracking your sleep
Many people who rely on wearable technology to count steps, or measure the miles they run or cycle, stumble upon the sleep-tracking function accidentally.
Here are three good reasons to track your sleep, says Dr. Lance:
- You frequently wake up at night. Environmental noise (think snoring partners and crying babies) can interrupt overnight sleep. Sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea or periodic limb movement disorder, can also wake you up frequently.
- You’re too sleepy during the day.Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are the most common reasons for not getting enough sleep at night and feeling tired by day. Less common causes include narcolepsy, which robs you of normal REM sleep so that you nod off throughout the day.
- You want to optimize your performance. If you compete as an athlete, or simply want to beat your personal best, a good night’s sleep will help you. Women approaching menopause may also want to optimize sleep to improve mood, memory and concentration.
How well do wearables work?
All wearable devices use an accelerometer to sense motion. (When you move, you’re awake; when you don’t, you’re asleep.)
But there’s a big difference between your Fitbit®, Jawbone UP®, or Apple or Android watch and an FDA-approved medical device like the Actiwatch®.
“When researchers compared the Actiwatch to a formal sleep study, they found that it accurately measured total sleep and total wake time,” says Dr. Lance.
“The Actiwatch can also tell us when the sleep/wake cycle is off, which we look for in teens with insomnia.”
Because the Actiwatch can cost several thousand dollars, sleep study program often loan it to patients for testing.
Medical vs. commercial devices
How well do the more affordable wrist-worn devices stack up against the Actiwatch?
In one American Academy of Sleep Medicine study, researchers had patients wear an Actiwatch along with several popular commercial wearables during a sleep study in the sleep lab.
“Overall, the commercial devices measured overall sleep time, and the amount of overnight sleep, pretty well,” says Dr. Lance. “But their accuracy dropped when measuring short naps during the day.”
It’s important to track the time you spend napping, because that can influence how well you sleep at night.
“Your smart watch or fitness device is also likely to overestimate sleep efficiency — the percentage of time you’re actually asleep while in bed,” she says.
Can wearables track light vs. deep sleep?
Some commercial wearables claim to track the time you’ll spend in light versus deep sleep. (You sleep deeply during the slow-wave and the REM, or rapid-eye-movement, stages of sleep.)
“During REM sleep, your brain catches up on its rest,” explains Dr. Lance. “During slow-wave sleep, your body catches up physiologically on its rest.”
But no device — not even the Actiwatch — can track light or deep sleep very well, she stresses. If you want to track the stages of sleep, you’ll need to have EEG leads placed on your head in a sleep lab.
“But even though not all wearable devices are FDA-approved, and not all of their data is great or validated, they are still useful,” she says. “We don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.”
Web apps for mobile or desktop
If you don’t want to wear a wrist device, you can also download a sleep app on your smartphone, laptop, tablet or desktop computer.
Different sleep apps have different features. For example, with the Sleep by Cleveland Clinic app, you can assess your sleep disorders risk, learn useful strategies to sleep better and find out how to get expert help.
Many good apps are free or relatively inexpensive; reading product reviews can be helpful.
Will tracking make you anxious?
“There is one caveat: If you tend to be anxious, tracking your sleep may not be helpful,” cautions Dr. Lance.
Some people can become obsessed with their device, checking their data constantly and worrying about whether it’s normal to awaken during the night.
“But we all awaken at night,” she says. “The question is, do we fall back asleep OK, and can we function OK the next day?”
Wanting to track your biometric data, however, is generally a good thing, Dr. Lance believes. It means you’re more likely to follow doctor’s orders and do what it takes to maximize your well-being.
“Consumer sleep technologies offer a wonderful, relatively inexpensive way to become more engaged in your overall health,” she says.

Activity trackers are all the rage, and millions of wrists now sport devices that monitor everything from your heart rate and oxygen consumption to the number of steps you take each day.
Among their many functions, activity trackers can also shine a light on your biggest source of inactivity: sleep.
But do they actually work? Read on to learn what sleep tracking devices can tell you (and what they can’t.)
What Do Sleep Trackers Monitor?
A wide variety of sleep trackers have hit the market, with more being released all the time. Many are wearable trackers that you can strap to your wrist. Others clip on your pillow or sit on your bedside table.
Features of these devices vary, but some common capabilities include:
- Sleep duration: By tracking the time you’re inactive, the devices can record when you fall asleep at night and when you stir in the morning.
- Sleep quality: Trackers can detect interrupted sleep, letting you know when you’re tossing and turning or waking during the night.
- Sleep phases: Some tracking systems track the phases of your sleep and time your alarm to go off during a period when you’re sleeping less deeply. In theory, that makes it easier for you to rouse.
- Environmental factors: Some devices record environmental factors like the amount of light or temperature in your bedroom.
- Lifestyle factors: Some trackers prompt you to enter information about activities that can affect sleep, such as how much caffeine you’ve had, when you’ve eaten or whether your stress level is high.
What Does a Typical Sleep Cycle Look Like?
During a typical night, you cycle through various stages of sleep:
Stage 1: Lasting only a few minutes, the first stage of sleep is light and easy to wake from.
Stage 2: During this stage, which is also fairly light, your brain waves begin to slow.
Stages 3 & 4: During these stages, you move into deeper sleep that’s harder to wake from. This is the time when your body grows and repairs itself and boosts immune function
Rapid eye movement (REM): During the final stage in the sleep cycle, your brain becomes more active and dreams occur. Your brain is processing information and storing long-term memories.
This cycle repeats every 90 to 110 minutes. As sleep progresses, REM cycles increase in length.
Recognizing Sleep Patterns
While sleep trackers can collect a lot of information about your slumber habits, there’s one important thing they generally don’t do, says Alan Schwartz, M.D., director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center: “They don’t measure sleep directly,” he says.
Instead, they often measure inactivity as a surrogate for estimating sleep, he explains. “Most sleep tracking devices make some guesstimate as to how much you’re actually sleeping.”
For exact data about your sleep habits, you’d have to do a medical sleep study , which monitors brain waves to analyze the stages of sleep you cycle through during the night. Such studies are helpful for diagnosing conditions like sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
Still, tracking devices can definitely be useful for helping you recognize patterns in your sleep habits, Schwartz says. Do you feel sluggish when you sleep from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. but energetic if you shift your shuteye to 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.? Do you sleep better when your bedroom is cooler or on days you exercise? Is your sleep disrupted if you have caffeine after lunchtime?
“The tracker will give you something to reflect on,” says Schwartz – often with user-friendly graphs or reports that make it easy to spot trends.
If you have any concerns about the quality of your sleep, it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor. If you’re an otherwise healthy person who just wants to gain some insight into your sleep routine , tracking devices might be a good option. “Just take the numbers with a grain of salt,” Schwartz says.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a surprisingly powerful sleep tracking wearable – and it’s hugely improved from the early days of Samsung smartwatches.
The Galaxy Watch 4 offers richer data, more metrics captured at night and most importantly, feels like sleep monitoring you can actually rely on telling you about your bed time.
If you’ve just grabbed a new Galaxy Watch and you’re getting to grips with exactly what the smartwatch is capable of when it’s time to drift off, we breakdown the key things to know about using your Samsung smartwatch to track your sleep.
How Samsung smartwatches track sleep
Before breaking down what Samsung can track when you’re asleep, let’s just go over how it’s tracking your sleep in the first place. It does this in the same way that most other smartwatches do it, by using the onboard accelerometer motion sensor and its own algorithms to detect when you’ve stopped moving around and in bed getting some shut eye.
It will also make use of additional sensors like heart rate and an SpO2 sensor to track additional biometric data. You can also use it to detect snoring while you sleep as well.
If you forget to track a night of sleep, you can manually record from the Samsung Health phone app. Just go to the Sleep tile on the app and scroll down for the option to Add sleep record.
Where can you view sleep data?
On the smartwatch, there is a dedicated Tile (widget) to review your most recent night’s sleep. If you want to dig deeper into the data, then you’ll need to download the Samsung Health app to your phone, which is separate from the main Samsung Galaxy Wearable app you’ll need to initially set up your Samsung smartwatch.
What can Samsung track during sleep?
Much of what Samsung grabs from your sleep is similar to what the likes of Fitbit, Garmin, Huawei and others promise to track as well. Here’s a little rundown of what you can expect to see:
- Sleep duration
- Calories burned
- Actual sleep time
- Sleep stages (awake, REM, light and deep)
- Sleep stages by time
- Sleep score
- Sleep consistency
- Blood oxygen during sleep
- Snoring data
Some of those things above are more self-explanatory than others, but we’ll go into a bit more detail below just what those various pieces of data mean in terms of telling you about your sleep time.
Sleep stages
When you go to sleep, your body and brain goes through different stages of sleep and those stages are broken down to time spent awake, REM also known as rapid eye movements, light sleep and deep sleep.
In Samsung’s Health app you can see a breakdown of those stages along with an explanation of what happens during those stages. Samsung will additionally keep a record of your typical sleep stage range once you’ve racked up enough sleep to provide it.
Sleep score
You sleep score is a simple way to get a sense of how well you’ve slept. Essentially, the higher the score, the better your night of sleep is deemed to be.
This is based on a variety of things. The first is total sleep time. Sleeping less than 7-8 hours or more than 9 hours can contribute to a lower sleep score.
Next is sleep cycles. According to Samsung, most adults go through 4-5 sleep cycles per night. If you register 0-3 sleep cycles, that will lower your sleep score.
Movements and awakenings can also impact on scores. If you’ve been less restless during the night, that will help generate a higher score.
Physical recovery is tied to the amount of deep sleep you manage to get. So if you score a lot of deep sleep time, that’s a good thing.
Last up is mental recovery, which is tied to REM sleep. That’s the stage linked to memory, learning and mental health. A lower percentage of REM sleep, will result in a lower score and a higher percentage helps contribute to a higher one.
Blood oxygen during sleep
Like many smartwatch and fitness trackers, Samsung’s latest smartwatches are capable of monitoring blood oxygen during sleep, which can be another indicator of your overall wellness. You’ll need to enable the monitoring on the watch or the Samsung Health app to start tracking during sleep.
When you do enable it, you’ll see a record of it in the Health app. Samsung states that a blood oxygen percentage above 90% during sleep is considered the usual. So if it drops, it will make a record of that. If you don’t see data or there’s data missing, that could be because your watch isn’t sat snug on the wrist for the optical sensors to continuously monitor blood oxygen.
Snoring detection
Yes, Samsung can keep track of your snoring, but to do it, you’re going to need make use of your phone, the Samsung Health app and your smartwatch to capture it. It works by using your phone’s microphone to record the snoring activity. To set up snore detection:
- Go to the Samsung Health app and go to the sleep tile
- Tap the three dotted icon on the screen to open up the settings
- Tap snore detection and select to turn it on Always or just Once.
- Tap the toggle to Record audio
- Choose whether you want to delete audio recordings after 31, 100 or 7 days.
You’ll need to place you phone on a flat surface (like a bedside table) with the bottom of the phone facing the bottom of your head. Make sure the phone is plugged into to the mains and your watch is wirelessly connected to it. Once you nod off, it’ll proceed to capture any snoring sounds and make a record of it in the Health app.
Sleep coaching
Samsung wants to help you get a better night’s sleep, so it’s offering to study sleep patterns, get you to fill out surveys, complete checklists and check out sleep-related articles to improve that sleep time.
Over a week of studying your data, Samsung will assign you one of eight sleep animals to represent your sleep type. These include: unconcerned lion, sensitive hedgehog, easygoing walrus and exhausted shark.
Samsung doesn’t explain why it’s picked these particular animals, but it seems like an attempt to make the sleep coaching and tracking experience a bit more of a fun one.

Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP

Samsung has finally added an ECG monitor to the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 , the tech company announced Wednesday. The FDA-approved electrocardiogram function is available as of Sept. 23 on the two wearables through the Samsung Health Monitor app when connected to a Galaxy phone.
The app on the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 can monitor heart rhythms and spot irregularities and signs of atrial fibrillation, or AFib, a type of irregular heartbeat.
Here’s how to use the ECG monitor:
- Open the new Samsung Health Monitor app with your smartwatch on your wrist
- Sit down and rest your arm on a flat surface
- Press your fingertip on the top button
- The app will classify your ECG as either sinus rhythm or AFib
- You can then record things like fatigue or dizziness
- It can then send a PDF report to your health care provider
The Galaxy Watch 3 also now has oxygen saturation tracking and a digital running coach with real-time info on your pace and form and after-workout VO2 max reports.
Sleep tracking features that measure breathing, vitals and REM cycles are also now on the Watch 3 ($169 at Best Buy) , while the Galaxy Watch Active 2 now supports VO2 max, running analysis and trip detection.
The smartwatch announcements came as Samsung held yet another Unpacked event online Wednesday.
With the advancement in technology, new amazing Smartwatches have been introduced into the market and this has caught the interest of many. Sony, Samsung, and Huawei brands among other brands have played a very big role in unveiling a vast number of smartwatches available today. The smartwatch has been equipped with a touch screen interface and is able to perform a variety of tasks that a normal watch cannot do.
Smartwatch
As a matter of fact, smartwatches are capable of performing functions which are much closer to smartphones functions. Apparently, it is known to have some mobile apps in it and has the capability to connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Also, smartwatches can function as portable media as well as placing and receiving calls and messages among other functionalities.
There are two methods which you can use to pair the two devices together. Each of them is straightforward and easy to follow. Be sure to use a method that is feasible for you and you will achieve a successful connection. The methods include:
Method 1: Basic Pairing via Bluetooth
This is the simplest way to connect your smartwatch with your Android phone. Therefore, all you need to do is turn Bluetooth on and follow the steps outlined below:
Step 1: Turn on Bluetooth on your Android phone

Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP

Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP

In some areas, Samsung smartwatches beat Apple Watches like a sleep tracking feature. Apple has introduced sleep tracking on Apple Watch Series 6 with the new WatchOS 7 version. It is too late for such a premium or most costly smartwatch. On the other hand, Samsung launched sleep tracking on Galaxy Watch in 2018; also, the previous watches had supported it. The feature is always the part of the Samsung Health app, which still gets better with every update. The results are also accurate and give proper tips to get better sleep.
Samsung previously lacked in ECG, fall detection & Afib features, though, now it came on new Galaxy Watch 3 along with advanced advanced heart rate & sleep tracking. With the launch of Galaxy Watch 3, Active & Active 2, the function gets more accurate. If you are also want to use the tracker on the watch, then I will simplify it. The smartwatches are not proper devices to put on your wrist and sleep with them. Fitness trackers would give you some relief. Still, if you want to wear the watch to track the sleep, then here is the guide on how to use sleep tracking on Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Active & Active 2 wearables.
Sleep tracking on Galaxy Watch 3
1. Download Samsung Health app on smartwatch
2. Open Samsung Health app
3. Scroll down & tap on Sleep
4. Again scroll down & open Record REM Sleep
5. Activate the toggle
6. Now wear the smartwatch tightly on your wrist
7. You can sleep & in the morning you can get the result
Some users noticed that REM sleep function is not available on their smartwatch, so you should look for it. The smartwatch will automatically track your sleep on your movement. If you switch off Record REM Sleep, then the watch will get the help of motion to track it. Follow these steps and stay fit. If you don’t understand anything about these steps, then you can ask me any questions.

Tukaj prihajajo spalni sledilniki.
Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP
S kombiniranjem podatkov o gibanju s statusom vašega spalnega okolja, ključ do boljšega nočnega počitka čaka tik nad naslednjim puhastim oblakom.

The importance of sleep cannot be understated. It plays a critical role in everything from our emotional state to how well we’re able to focus throughout the day and our long-term health.
Thanks to the proliferation of devices and apps designed to monitor our sleep, it’s easier than ever for anyone with a smartphone to keep track of sleep trends over time. Wearable devices like trackers and watches from Fitbit, Apple, and Garmin provide an even closer perspective on the quality and quantity of your sleep.
The Apple Watch, however, does not monitor sleep by default, a metric that rivals like Fitbit have long offered. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to measure your sleep using Apple’s smartwatch. There are a variety of third-party sleep-tracking apps available in the App Store, many of which integrate with Apple’s Health app.
Although the Apple Watch can’t monitor your sleep by default just yet, the company is reportedly planning on adding this feature in the future, as Bloomberg has reported. It’s also worth noting that if you do plan to use your Apple Watch as a sleep tracker, you’ll have to find an optimal time to charge it since many of these apps require you to wear the watch overnight. I found myself resting the watch on its charger during less busy times of the day when I wasn’t active, such as during dinner or while sitting at my desk at work.
After spending the past few nights tracking my sleep with three free sleep-tracking apps, SleepWatch emerged as being my favorite. It provides a more in-depth snapshot of your sleep for free, while others charge for more than just the basic features.
Here’s a closer look at the apps I tried and how they compare to other free sleep-tracking apps available in the App Store.
Our top pick: SleepWatch
When it comes to monitoring your sleep, SleepWatch goes beyond the basics. Unlike other apps on this list, it provides more personalization and provides access to trends over time without requiring a one-time payment or subscription.
SleepWatch, which I used to track my sleep over the course of three nights, outlines each night’s sleep in a dashboard that provides a wealth of statistics about how you’ve slept. Such data points include the exact time at which you fell asleep and when you woke up, the amount of sleep you got and how that measures against your sleep goal, and your sleeping patterns — i.e. how much time you spent in light, restful, or disrupted sleep.
It also breaks out how much time you spent in restful sleep, your average sleeping heart rate, and how much lower your average sleeping heart rate is compared to your waking heart rate.
In the morning, the app will also ask you how rested you feel so that you can track this metric over time as well. If you’re feeling fatigued, you can also log this on a daily basis within the app. There’s also a dedicated tab within the app where you can answer questions about any medical conditions that apply to you and sleep goals to personalize the experience.
There’s also a tab for viewing sleep trends over time that’s broken down by day, weekly averages, and monthly averages.
All of these features are available without upgrading to a premium account, making it noticeably more comprehensive than other free options. Upgrading for $3.99 within the app unlocks a feature called Sleep Report Card, which shows how your sleep compares to other users and provides advanced analysis among other features.

Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP

Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP

While it may sound harmless, using your smartphone, tablet, or any other electronic device before bed on a regular basis can actually have a detrimental long-term effect on your health.
A new report from GigaOm breaks down how exposure to the artificial blue light that emanates from our smartphone screens can damage your sleep cycle and your health.
It’s been known for quite some time that blue light impacts the way your body produces melatonin, the chemical in your body that makes you feel sleepy.
Just a few months ago, the American Chemical Society posted a video explaining that exposure to blue light at night essentially tricks your body into thinking its morning, which messes with your circadian rhythm and makes it harder to fall asleep.
But melatonin does more than help us fall asleep — it also slows the progression of cancer and other diseases. GigaOm’s report digs into a lot of reasons why using devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and televisions before bed can be bad for your health, and here are some of the most important points.
It can damage your eyes. Optometrists are said to be seeing higher levels of retinal stress in young people that could lead to disorders such as macular degeneration. In extreme cases, this can cause near blindness. This exposure can also cause retinal toxicity.
A lack of melatonin could make you more vulnerable to disease. According to the US National Library of Medicine, a lack of melatonin is linked to higher rates of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers.
It can make you moody, too. Exposure to blue light has been said to have an impact on peoples’ mood. At the same time, lower melatonin levels in mice has been linked to higher rates of depression , as the US National Library of Medicine also says according to GigaOm.
Why does a lack of melatonin have such severe effects? Melatonin influences your circadian rhythm since it helps you fall asleep, and changes in that rhythm have been linked to other noticeable shifts in your body. Your circadian rhythm is an internal biological clock that regulates when you’re sleepy and when you feel awake throughout the day.
In 2012 Harvard Medical School conducted a study in which 10 participants were put on a night work schedule that slightly shifted their circadian rhythms. During that time, their blood sugar levels increased, leaving them in a pre-diabetic state, and levels of leptin also decreased. Leptin is the chemical that leaves you feeling full after a meal.
So does that mean you shouldn’t watch TV or use your computer at night? The National Sleep Foundation suggests that you avoid dozing off with the TV on. But Dr. Michael Breus, who has been referred to as the “Sleep Doctor” and has appeared on Dr. Oz, told GigaOm that you’d have to have a “fairly decent amount of light” in “close proximity” for the effects to be too damaging.
动作X 24/7 ( Motion X 24/7 )
Apple Watch / FitBit / Jawbone UP ( Apple Watch/FitBit/Jawbone UP )
While there are already a million fitness trackers out there, only a few are equipped with the right hardware and software pairings to help you get the most both out of the energy you spend in your workouts, along with the time you use to recover.
Track your sleep schedule to improve your sleep hygiene (and your life).
Let’s say you fell asleep last night at 11pm and woke at 7am, getting 8 hours of what seems like good rest. So, why are you still tired in the morning?
It’s probably because you aren’t getting sufficient deep sleep to truly restore your body and mind. But instead of guessing how many hours you’re getting or wondering if you tossed and turned all night, you can get hard data by tracking your sleep .
Let’s explore the many ways you can do it.
Use your phone
While it’s a good idea to leave tech out of the bedroom, if you’re like most people, your phone charges on your bedside table as you sleep . It’s likely also replaced your alarm clock.
If you’re already sleeping with your phone, make it work for you by tracking your sleep.
Sleep apps
There are several apps that use your phone’s accelerometer or sonar waves emitted from your phone to detect movement. All you have to do is place your phone on the mattress next to you.
Every morning, you’ll be able to see how long you slept and how much you moved while sleeping, which can indicate that you’re not getting enough restorative deep sleep.
Our favorite sleep-tracking apps are SleepScore (Android and iOS), Sleep Cycle (Android and iOS) and Sleep Time (Android and iOS).
iPhone
The iPhone (and other iOS devices) uses a different approach to measure your sleep.
In the Clock app, the Bedtime feature lets you set your bedtime and wake up time. Once set, your phone will alert you when it’s time to go to bed to get the amount of sleep you desire.
With this feature enabled, your phone pays attention to when you stop using it at night and when you reach for it in the morning to approximate the number of hours you slept. You can see that data in the Sleep Analysis section of the Health app.
Though apps are a great way to get started with sleep-tracking, they’re not a perfect solution. They can be thwarted by mattress movement (if you sleep with a partner), your phone can fall off the bed, and they can also cause your phone to overheat if it’s under sheets and blankets.
Fitness trackers
To get a better idea of how well you sleep — how long you’re in REM cycle sleep or whether you move around a lot while you’re snoozing — you can use a fitness tracker.
Many of these devices already come equipped to track sleep. Several Fitbit models , the Apple Watch , the Motiv Ring and others all track sleep efficiency by measuring your movements throughout the night.
Garmin’s Vivosport and many other fitness trackers can also track your sleep habits.
Keep in mind, though, that because these devices aren’t designed specifically for sleep, it’s a good idea to double-check their accuracy. For example, according to a 2012 study (and a recent lawsuit), Fitbit’s actigraph overestimates sleep by 67 minutes, which is pretty significant.
To make sure your fitness tracker isn’t over- or underestimating how long you were out, use an app to be safe, or the good old-fashioned method of remembering when you went to sleep.
Smart beds and sensors
If you are serious about tracking your sleep, try a smart mattress or dedicated sleep sensor, such as the iFit Sleep HR or Eight Sleep Tracker .
Sensors fit under or over your existing mattress to track movement, plus heart and respiratory rates. They use that data to tell you how long it takes you to fall asleep and how long you spent in each cycle of sleep throughout the night.
The Eight Sleep Mars+ smart mattress tracks your movement and heart rate as you sleep.
Smart mattresses do the same things, but also often include heating and cooling modes and other premium features.
Rather than having a fitness tracker pull double duty, the main benefit to a dedicated sleep tracker is accuracy. The secondary benefit is not having to wear a wristband in your sleep or worry about it dying throughout the night.
Compile the data
Gathering all of this sleep data is only useful if you actually use it. After several nights of tracking your sleep, you’ll end up with information on how much “deep” vs. “light” sleep you’re getting, how often you move or wake up, time spent in each sleep cycle or — in some cases — how much you snore.
Unfortunately, most sleep apps and fitness trackers don’t give you much advice on how to make changes to your sleep habits based on that data.
Here are some causes of common sleep issues:
If you’re not hitting the number of hours you need: It’s time to adjust your bedtime or wake up call.
If you’re sleeping, but not getting much deep sleep: It could mean your bedroom is too hot or cold, or that you need to cut back on caffeine or alcohol. You might also have underlying sleep conditions, like sleep apnea or insomnia, that you should get checked out by a doctor.
If you wake up a lot at night or toss and turn: It could mean you’re sleeping too hot, that caffeine or alcohol is interfering with your sleep, or you’re dealing with stress.
Apps and sensors can help you understand what’s happening while you’re asleep, but they aren’t stand-ins for going to the doctor. If you’re waking up exhausted all the time or having trouble staying awake during the day, it’s worth getting checked out for any underlying issues.
Now that you know how to track your sleep, here are ways your smart home can help you sleep better .

Have you ever woken up to bright morning skies feeling energized? A big reason for your mood is the high-intensity blue light coming from the sun. Among the visible light spectrum, blue wavelengths have the most powerful effect on yourВ sleep-wake internal body clock.
Both natural and artificial blue light can boost your alertness and mental sharpness. But too much of it may keep you awake when your body needs to wind down.
How Blue Light Hurts Sleep
Your eyes aren’t good at blocking blue light. So almost all of it passes straight through to the back of your retina, which helps your brain translate light into images.
Exposure to all colors of light helps control your natural sleep-and-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. More so than any other color, blue light messes with your body’s ability to prepare for sleep because it blocks a hormone called melatonin that makes you sleepy.
Bottom line: You’re less drowsy than usual at night, and it takes you longer to fall asleep.
Blue Light Sources
Americans spend an average of 7 hours a day on electronic devices. That’s a lot of time staring at blue light. Worse yet, nine out of 10 Americans admit to reaching for an electronic device at least several nights each week shortly before bedtime. That could be an invitation for insomnia.
The light from your devices often appears white. But they can give off wavelengths in the range of 400 to 490 nanometers, which is blue light.
Indoor sources of blue light include:
- Televisions
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Gaming systems
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs
- Computer monitors
Ways to Manage Blue Light
The simplest way to lower your exposure to artificial blue light is to turn off your smartphone, TV, and other gadgets well before bedtime. Other ways include:
Blue light-blocking glasses. They’re widely sold online. Amber or brown-tinted lenses may help best.
Cut back on screen timeВ starting 2-3 hours before bed.
Dim the brightnessВ on your devices. This is often called night mode or dark mode. It changes the background from white to black.
Install blue light-filtering appsВ on smartphone, tablet, and computer screens. They filter a lot of blue light from reaching yourВ eyesВ without making it harder to see the display.
Swap light bulbs. LEDs give off more blue light than fluorescent bulbs. And both emit more blue light than energy-hungry incandescent bulbs, which are being phased out.
Use a dim red lightbulbВ as a nightlight. Red is the color that least affects your circadian rhythm.
Set an alarmВ for 1 hour before bed to remind yourself to quit using devices.
