We couldn’t find FB Reader in the Ubuntu Software Center, so we will show you where to download it, how to install it, and how to open .mobi files using it. Go to the following URL and download the appropriate version for your machine, 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (amd64). You must also download and install the libunibreak package, so click the appropriate link for your machine. Save these files to a location in your home directory.

First, we will install the libunibreak package. To do this, click the Files icon on the Unity bar to open Nautilus (the File Manager).

Navigate to the folder in which you saved the .deb file for libunibreak and double-click the .deb file.

The Ubuntu Software Center opens displaying a page for libunibreak. Click Install.

Enter your password on the Authenticate dialog box that displays and click Authenticate.

Once the installation is done, click the X button in the upper-left corner of the Ubuntu Software Center window to close it.

To install FB Reader, double-click the .deb file for the program and follow the same steps as you did for libunibreak.

Now that FB Reader is installed, navigate to a directory containing .mobi files for books you want to read and right-click on one of the .mobi files. Select Open With Other Application from the popup menu.

A dialog box displays saying no applications are available to open your eBook, which you know is actually not true. So, click Show Other Applications.

Select FBReader from the list of applications that display on the dialog box and click Select.

The eBook opens in FB Reader and you can use the controls to turn pages or jump to a specific page. To view all the books in your library. Click Show Library Tree on the toolbar.

A list of authors and books displays allowing you to open other eBooks, remove eBooks, and view and edit information about the eBooks and authors. You can view the list different ways, such as by author, by title, etc.

Once you have opened the first .mobi file to open it in FB Reader as described above, you can double-click any .mobi file to open it FB Reader without having to choose the application again.

I often get DRM-free eBooks from Humble Bundle. Sometimes the e-books are downloaded in .mobi format. This MOBI format is useful if you what to transfer these ebooks to Kindle from your Linux desktop.

If you try to read a mobi book in Ubuntu with the default document viewer, you’ll see an error that this type of document cannot be opened.

Don’t worry. I am going to show you how to read .mobi files on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.

Install FB Reader application

You’ll need a dedicated application here. There are several eBook readers available for Linux.

I’ll recommend FB Reader. It is a cross-platform application available for free on Linux, Windows, macOS and even on mobile devices.

It is also available in the official repositories of many Linux distributions.

To install FB Reader, open Ubuntu Software Center and search for FB Reader. And then click on E-Book Reader to install it. It is called E-book reader in Ubuntu. Don’t ask why!

Alternatively, you can install it in the terminal using the following command:

How to open a MOBI file with FB Reader

Follow the steps below to open .mobi file with FB Reader:

Go to the mobi file and right click on it and select Open With Other Applications. Now choose View All Applications.

And in here, choose E-Book Reader from the list of available applications.

From now onwards when you double click on a .mobi file, it will be opened in FB Reader.

Another good and modern eBook reader is Foliate. It provides a kindle-like reading experience on Linux desktop.

If you’re looking for more than just a reader and want to manage your eBook library, Calibre is the application for you.

Don’t you think the default document reader in Ubuntu should have been potent enough to read various file formats and we need not have to install a new program to read .CBR files or .mobi files? What you say?

A quick tutorial to show you how to read ePub books in Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution.

If you have ever noticed my author bio (it’s at the end of every article), you know that I like detective fiction and am a huge Agatha Christie fan. So, the other day I came to know about this Project Gutenberg that provides free to download eBooks. I downloaded The Mysterious Affair at Styles which has the first appearance of legendary detective character Hercules Poirot.

I double clicked to open the downloaded book in Ubuntu 15.04 and to my surprise, the files was opened with archive manager and I ended up looking at a screen like this:

The reason for this unexpected error was that the downloaded eBook was in ePub format and Ubuntu’s default Document Viewer doesn’t support ePub format.

So the question arises, how to read ePub books in Ubuntu or any Linux distribution for that matter.

How to open ePub files in Ubuntu Linux

Since the default Document Viewer is unable to read ePub, we need to use another application specifically for this purpose. If you ask any experienced Linux user about eBook reader, his/her answer will be Calibre.

But for reading ePub files, I won’t advise Calibre. Don’t get me wrong. Calibre is undoubtedly the best eBook management application out there but it comes with lots of baggage. You see, it is a library management system and you can do a number of things with books in Calibre. But it is a heavy application and requires lots of resources. It won’t be wise to use it just for opening an ePub file, specially if you want to make Ubuntu faster, avoid heavy programs.

So, what alternative to Calibre are we going to use? There are several ebook reading applications for Linux. You may use FBReader, abbreviation of Free Book Reader. It is a small application and very fast. It does the job of opening eBooks just fine. Installing FBReader is very easy because it is available in most of the Linux repositories by default.

To install FBReader in Ubuntu and respective Linux Mint and elementary OS versions, use the following command in a terminal:

Once you have installed FBReader, search for FBReader in the menu. You’ll be surprised to find E-book reader instead of FBReader here but that’s the way it is. Once installed, FBReader will be visible as E-Book reader everywhere.

Now, how to open the ePub with E-Book reader? There are two ways, first is that you open E-Book reader first and then open the file in it. You can choose to drang and drop in Unity which is not that user friendly.

The second way is to set FBReader the default ePub reader. Let’s see how to do that.

Step 1

Right click on the ePub file and go to Properties.

Step 2

In the Open With tab, you can see that the default application associated with ePub file is Archive Manager. Time to change it. Look for E-Book reader. Select it and click on Set as default button.

Step 3

Double click on the ePub file and it will be opened in E-Book reader or FBReader, which ever you prefer to call it. Enjoy your eBook.

The mobi e-book file format was created by a French company named Mobipocket SA. This file format is commonly used by the MobiPocket Reader and Amazon Kindle Readers.

View Mobi file with FBReader

It’s really easy to read mobi files in Ubuntu 16.04. You just need to install one piece of software called FBReader. It is available in Ubuntu repository, so you can open Ubuntu Software (formerly Ubuntu Software Center) and search for FB. Click the install button to install it. It sounds strange but FBReader is called E-book reader in Ubuntu Software.

If you prefer command line, then install FBReader with the following command:

Once it’s installed, open the file manager and navigate to your mobi files. Right-click it and select open with other applications.

In the next window, select view all applications.

Then select E-book reader from the applications list.

Now the mobi file is opened in FBReader.

After you opened mobi files with FBReader, FBReader will be set as default application to open mobi files in Ubuntu 16.04 so next time you just need to double-click the mobi file to read it. FBReader can also be used to open ePub and chm files.

Install FBReader in Arch Linux

FBReader is in Arch Linux community repository. So to install FBReader on Arch Linux, run this command in terminal:
