How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Facebook is a great way to connect with people, and build your readership (and business). One of the best ways to do this is through facebook groups.

Most people are looking for a way to automate their group postings… they want to hit one button and have their blog links posted to all their groups in 1 second flat.

That’s the WRONG way to go about it.

Facebook is all about connection… this includes your groups. You don’t want to spam your link to a bunch of groups and never participate or even SEE the group!

Just think… if you’re doing that, and the guy next to you is doing that… oh yeah, and that other guy is doing that… who is actually SEEING your posts? No one. So yeah, that’s pointless.

You want to take some time to get into the group… connect with others, help others out, and of course share what you’ve got to offer as well.

Once you get more than a few groups though, it can be tough to know where you’ve posted, what you’ve done, and just keep things straight in general.

How to Organize Your Facebook Groups

I devised a little system to make it easy for me to share my content in the RIGHT groups, and to connect with people around relevant topics.

I do not only use marketing groups. I blog about a bunch of different things, and I am a part of groups that are relevant to all those different topics. Which means I don’t share everything I do in all my groups.. .just the ones that are relevant to the topic of the day.

To keep things straight and organized I’ve created folders in my bookmarks. I’ve set up different folders for different topics, as well as folders for groups where no links are allowed (just connecting).

I then went through ALL my groups on facebook, and added them to at least one relevant folder. (yes it took some time, and was a bit of a pain in the butt… but totally worth it)

It’s up to you to decide on the best way to separate your groups… but I find it helpful to have a folder of groups that allow links and one for groups that don’t allow links.

I don’t want to be posting links in places where they are not welcome… but I do want to continue connecting with the people in the group… so this helps me be clear on what I need to do to best connect in each group.

I also have separate folders for different topics I write about frequently. Go ahead and create the folders any way that works for you, try to keep 15 groups or less in each folder though.

Because here’s where the magic happens.

Once you’ve got your groups bookmarked in your folders, you can go to the folder and right click on the folder and then choose ”open all bookmarks in new tabs”.

Each of your groups opens in a new tab, so you can go from one to the next, post your links, like a few posts, make a few comments and then you’re done! As you finish interacting in each group, just close the tab.

This is a super simple way to stay organized, and actually keep connecting in your facebook groups.

Good luck, and keep connecting.

It’s time to take out embarrassing photos from your friends who have saved and make them the group chat icon on iMessages!

We have all been a part of many group chats lately, and especially now they are an important part of staying connected. But many of our groups mostly involve the same subset of people from other groups and it is very important to track our group to avoid embarrassment or jumble. You know what I’m talking about. “Oh, sorry, wrong group!”

Most of our group chat tracks are photos associated with it. We are more responsive to visuals and images than text. Most messaging platforms offer features. Finally, Apple has also decided to go along with bringing support to organize photos to our group chats on Messages on iOS 14. Remember that that won’t work on iOS 14 predecessors

To organize or change group photos, open the Messages application on your iPhone and open group chats from the conversation thread. Now, tap the area with the group name and group participant’s avatar in the chat.

Some options will be expanded under the group name. Tap the ‘i’ icon (info).

You will see an ‘Change Name and Photo’ option on the Details screen. Knock it.

The editing screen will open. You can arrange photos from your gallery, take new photos, arrange text, or use emojis or animojis as group icons. This will display some of your recent emojis and animojis used as suggestions, but you can add more.

Tap the option that you want to set to select it and finally, tap ‘Finish’ to save the changes, then tap ‘Finish’ again.

A group icon will appear with the group participant’s avatar floating around it on the chat screen. Talk about aesthetics! Only the icon that you choose will appear in the conversation thread list.

It’s about time Apple decided to bring a feature to arrange group photos to Messaging. Not only are they very practical, but they also help provide a personal touch to the chat making it more enjoyable for everyone. And isn’t life all about small things?

In the film age, really organized people took the time to methodically place prints in old-fashioned picture albums. Fortunately, on the Mac, the iPhoto equivalent of placing pictures in albums is much simpler. The process is similar to creating playlists in iTunes. You can place all the pictures from your ski trip in one album, pictures of the high-school reunion in another, and so on. Here’s the drill:

Choose File→New→Album, or click the Add To button at the lower-right corner of the iPhoto screen.

In the first example, an untitled album appears in the Source list and you can drag photos to this album in the Source list as noted below.

If you clicked Add To in Step 1, click Album and then click New Album.

Type a name for your new album.

You can use Hawaii Honeymoon, Dance Recital, or whatever.

Now you have to populate that album with pictures, as follows:

Drag entire events or individual photos onto the album name or icon in the Source list.

To select a batch of photos to drag over, hold down the cmd key while clicking the pictures you want to include.

To select adjoining photos, hold down the Shift key and click the arrow buttons.

To select all the photos between two photos, hold down Shift and click the first image; then hold Shift and click the last image.

As you drag a batch of photos en masse to the album, a little red circle indicates how many pictures you’re moving over.

If you want to select the photos before creating an album, select the pics and then choose Add To in the iPhoto toolbar.

Although photos are lumped into albums, the pictures actually remain in the iPhoto library. The images inside albums are merely pointers to the original files. So you can place the same picture in multiple albums. You can also remove pictures from an album without fear that the images will be deep-sixed from the iPhoto library.

After you create a bunch of albums, you can group them into a folder. Choose File→New Folder, give the folder a name (such as Vacations), and drag all the relevant albums into the folder. When you select the newly created folder, you see all the pictures stored in all the albums contained in that folder. Folders turn up in the Source list.

In our life, we have to maintain large relationships with friends, family, clients, colleagues etc., each group keeps growing. In case of losing connections one day, we would choose to store and organize contacts in iPhone, Google Gmail, Apple Address Book, or paper notebook, etc.

If you want to use them on mobile, you’ll have to request the desktop version of Facebook from your mobile device.

Photos—formerly iPhoto—is macOS’s default app for organizing photos. Photos integrates with iCloud and keeps everything synced across your devices. It does a lot of the work on its own and keeps your library reasonably tidy without you having to do much, but it also has support for user-made albums and other organizational features.

Setting Up and Importing Your Photos

When you open up the app for the first time, you’re asked if you want to link you iCloud. If you do, go ahead and click the “Use iCloud Photos” button. If now, click the “Not Now” link. You can always set it up later if you don’t want to do it right away.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

After that, you’ll find yourself in the main Photos window. If you have other pictures you want to import into Photos, select File > Import or press Shift+Command+I to open the import window. You can import photos by dragging them from Finder, pulling them from a camera, or selecting a folder and then choosing the pictures to import.

Here, we’ve selected a folder from which to import. Once you select your folder, hit the “Review For Import” button.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Next, you can review the pictures you want to import. If you want to import all the pictures in the folder, go ahead and click the “Import All New Photos” button. Otherwise, you can select just the images you want to import and then click the “Import Selected” button. By default, images are just imported to your Library, but you can also import them to a new album if you want to stay a little more organized. It will still add all the photos to your main photo library.

If you have your photos in iCloud, or on your iPhone, Photos will sync them all together. Choose Photos > Preferences or press Command-Comma to open the settings:

Using Photos

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Photos is great at keeping your photos organized. You can use the sidebar to control the view you see, including:

  • Photos: All your photos, with no sorting.
  • Memories: Scans your library, looks for clusters of pictures and groups them together. If you’re looking for photos of a particular event, look here.
  • People: Scans faces in your pictures and groups them together, useful for finding pictures of friends and family.
  • Places: Sorts by location. If you’re looking for photos you took on vacation, they’ll be easy to find in here.

The top bar switches the sorting method: Photos shows everything, Moments is probably the most useful, Collections shows a wider view, and Years is only useful for extensive libraries.

All of this organization is automatic, which is great for most people. However, you also can manually sort your photos by creating new albums for them. Right-click any photo and choose Add To > New Album:

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

By default, Photos names the album with the date, but you can rename it by right-clicking and selecting “Rename Album,” or by pressing space while the album is selected in the sidebar.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

You can manually add the album to your memories by selecting “Show as Memory” and then “Add to Memories” at the bottom. Note that you can add the same album multiple times to memories, but you can delete them if you do this on accident.

Projects is another interesting section, letting you do a lot of creative things with your photos, like making calendars and cards:

All of them except slideshow use external plugins, which you’ll have to download from the App Store. Most of them are free though.

Editing Photos

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

If you want to edit a photo’s details, right-click it and choose “Get Info.” Here, you can edit metadata like the description and the location the photo was taken.

For actual photo manipulation, you’ll need an external program. You can right-click a photo and point to the “Edit With” menu to see a list of editing apps you can use. If you don’t have any installed, the built-in Preview app has some basic tools. You can send a photo to Preview by choosing Edit With > Preview.

From there, you’ll need to hit this button to do any actual editing.

Once you’re done, hit save, and it will automatically update the photo in Photos—no extra importing required.

Live Albums allow Google to recognize people or pets in your pictures, add them to albums, and share those albums with friends or family. Here’s how to automatically organize your photos with Live Albums in Google Photos.

Google Photos is an unparalleled photo management tool—one that greatly improved with the introduction of Live Albums, which allow Google to recognize people or pets in your pictures, automatically add them to albums, and share those albums with your friends or family. You can then assign a name to a face and search for that person in the app to see every photo Google has collected of them.

It even works on your pets. As long as your pets look a little different, Google can tell the difference between Princess Caroline and Mr. Peanutbutter.

Google recently upped the Live Album limit from 10,000 photos and videos up to 20,000 in total, which gives you far more room to play with, especially if you’re keeping professional work on Google Photos.

Taking the time to organize your Live Albums will save a lot of manual work in the long run. For example, if you create a family album, every photo will end up in the same place without the need to move any assets, from the family Thanksgiving selfie to a stray picture of your sister. If you’re conducting a photo shoot, you can keep photos organized based on the subject of the picture. You can even share a link to an album with your parents or clients so they can take a look at the contents of the folders.

Here’s how to create and categorize your own Live Albums.

  • You can create folders in Gmail by using labels, which are great for sorting the various emails you receive every day.
  • The labels function in Gmail essentially serves the same purpose as folders, allowing you to group your emails into different categories.
  • Gmail also has a “Move to” feature, which lets you easily send your email to a specific folder you’ve created.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Gmail uses labels instead of folders. However, labels function almost exactly the same way folders would on any other email service.

The trick for using labels as folders is to use the “Move to” option. This will move a message — or a thread of messages — out of your inbox and into the label.

This is useful for emails that you may want to store long term, but don’t necessarily want at the top of your inbox, such as vacation plans or an invitation for a party.

Here’s how to create a Gmail label on your computer or mobile device.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

MacBook Pro (From $1,299.99 at Best Buy)

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

iPad (From $329.99 at Best Buy)

Lenovo IdeaPad 130 (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $899.99 at Best Buy)

How to create a label in Gmail using a computer

1. Open Gmail on your browser of choice on your PC or Mac computer. Make sure you’re signed into your Google account.

2. Click the gear icon in the upper-right hand corner of your screen.

3. Click “Settings.”

4. Click the second tab at the top of the page called “Labels.”

5. Scroll down until you find the “Labels” subsection.

6. Click the small white “Create new label” button.

7. This will open a pop-up. Enter a label name, and if you’d like to nest the label under an already existing one — this is like creating a subfolder, or a folder inside of a folder. If you would like to nest it, check the box next to it and choose a parent label from the dropdown menu.

8. Click the blue “Create” button when you’re done.

You can also create a new label directly in your inbox.

1. Select any message in your inbox.

2. Hover over the “Label as” option and then click “Create new.”

3. This will open a pop-up to create a new label. Enter a new label name and click “Create” when you’re done.

How to create a label in Gmail using a mobile device

1. Open the Gmail app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Make sure you’re signed into your account.

2. Tap the three bars in the upper-left hand corner of your screen.

3. Scroll down until you find the “Labels” subsection. Tap “Create new” next to the “+” sign.

4. This will open a pop-up. Type the name of your new label. Tap the blue “Done” option in the top-right corner.

You can also create a new label by accessing the “Move to” menu — which is what you’d use anyway to transfer messages out of your general inbox and into a label.

1. Start by opening an email and tapping the three dots in the top-right corner.

2. Tap “Move to.”

3. Tap the “+” sign in the upper-right corner to create a new label. This will open the same screen where you can type your label name and then tap the blue “Done” option to complete the process.

How to move messages into a label in Gmail using a computer

Simply click and drag the message that you’d like to move into the label in the left sidebar. To move multiple messages at once, click the checkboxes next to the messages that you’d like to move and then drag them over using your mouse.

You can also right-click on the email(s), hover over “Move to” and then select the label from the dropdown menu.

How to move messages into a label in Gmail using a mobile device

Unfortunately you can’t move multiple emails at a time in the Gmail app, but to move an individual email, open it and then tap the three dots in the top-right corner. Tap “Move to” and then select the label in the pop-up menu.

By default, Facebook doesn’t show you everything. Instead, it decides what it thinks you want to see based on the things you like, comment on, and what kind of media Facebook wants to promote. If you’d rather see everything, in chronological order, the way Facebook used to be, here’s how to do that.

On the Facebook Website

Open Facebook in your browser and click the three little dots next to where it says News Feed.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

From the menu, click Most Recent.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Facebook will refresh and now you’ll see everything in chronological order.

The one downside is that you will need to do this every time you log into Facebook. To get around it, bookmark the URL in your bookmarks bar. The bit at the end tells Facebook to redirect to the Most Recent feed, so this will take you right there.

On the Facebook Mobile App

If you’re trying to view your Facebook feed on the iPhone or Android app, you can do that too. Open the Facebook app and head to the Menu pane.

Then select Most Recent and you will see everything in Chronological order.

Is there a way to organize my download folder easily or maintain it, so I don’t have an assortment of different files ALWAYS ending up together and unorganized?

I know there are addons for Firefox, but I don’t use any. The best thing to do, is once you download something, put it in a folder that you have created to sort things through. Eg Music, WordPress Addons, Programs etc.

MakeUseOf has a good post on organizing your folders.

For Windows, I have found a few other free options:*Open source, Drop It: “A tiny, flexible, hard-working tool to automate sorting and filing data files and folders. “*Open source, Belvedere: “Use the Belvedere friendly interface to create advanced rules to move, copy, delete, rename, or open files based on their name, extension, size, creation date, and more.”*Donationware, Move Out: “y. Use it to make a rule that moves files from the desktop to a subfolder, based on file type, part of a filename, or whatever. Have it ask to replace existing files, or rename them.” I hope at least one of them does what you need!

Austin, one of the programs I use (for the Mac) Hazel. It’s not free, but it will organize any folder on your hard drive. You can arrange particular kinds of files to be copied or moved to designated folders. It will clean out files from folder based on the rules you set up for it.

If you’re Windows user, I’m sure there’s a similar application that does the same thing.

Oh, also, if you’re a Mac user, you might the free Automator that comes installed with Snow Leopard. With Automator, you can apply a folder action (see this article for some ideas: //) to your Downloads folder and do a few things similar to Hazel.

If you’re talking about downloads from your browser, saving the different types of files into sorted folders would probably be the easiest way.

If you mean from torrent downloads, you can setup categories to automatically sort them, depending on what program you use.

Lightroom is one of the best (if not the best) post-production editing software available on the market. It simplifies and speeds up a photographer’s workflow to where he/she can spend less time editing and more time shooting. However, if there is a weak spot to Lightroom, it’s organizing presets. If you’re not careful, it can turn into a bunch of cluttered, poorly categorized folders. Here’s how you can create organized preset folders, so you don’t waste time searching for what you need.

Develop Presets:

If you have ever worked with presets, you know that Lightroom offers the Develop Presets folder for storing your presets. It’s where you’ll find all of your installed presets. The folders appear on the left side of your screen in your Lightroom interface organized by sets.

New Folders:

It’s at this point in the Lightroom interface that you might want to gain (or regain) some organizational control of your folders. The most obvious way to do this is to create new preset folders to organize your presets better.

There are two ways to create new preset folders:

  1. From the Lightroom Develop module, just right-click on an existing folder within your presets panel. You’ll see the option to create a “new folder”. Just click on that to create and name a new folder.
  2. The other way is to start from the beginning by opening your file manager or browser to open your Develop Presets folder. Once there, you can add any new sub-folders you create – but you won’t see them until you restart Lightroom.

Re-naming Folders:

If you already have preset folders, but you would like to rename them to find them more easily. You can follow the same two steps outlined above by either starting from your browser or from within the Develop module. Whichever way you choose, you will need to be on the presets panel and complete following steps:

  • Click on the folder you’d like to rename.
  • Then right-click on that folder to open a popup menu.
  • On the popup menu, click on “rename.”
  • Once that folder is displayed, enter the new name.
  • Click ok to save the new name.

Note: Folders always display in alphabetical order. You might want to think about naming the most frequently used folders so that they will appear at the top. You can do that by either adding a number in front of the name or the letter “A” followed by the name. This guarantees it displays at or near the top of your list of folder names.

Organizing Presets:

Once you’ve organized your folders, you can move on to organizing your Lightroom presets. There are two ways to accomplish this:

  1. Move your preset folders around by opening your browser.
  2. Move the preset folders while you’re in Lightroom.

In the Develop module, you also can move presets between folders by clicking, dragging, and dropping them. Remember that presets are also displayed in alphabetical order by their name. If you have frequently-used presets, you can consider renaming them as we stated above with the letter “a” or a number at the start of its name.

There’s no need to let preset folders or presets be a cluttered mess on your desktop. With a few extra minutes, you can rename them and organize them so you can easily find them when needed saving you precious time.

Approach #1

1. Navigate to the desktop of your Mac. The word “Finder” will be displayed at the top left corner of the monitor beside the apple icon once you’re there — if it says anything else, like “Safari” or “Word,” you are technically still in that program, so just click on an empty space on your desktop.

2. Click the word “File” beside “Finder.”

3. Click “New Folder” from the dropdown menu.

And that’s it, new folder created.

Approach #2

1. Navigate to the desktop of your Mac.

3. Click “New Folder” in the menu that appears.

Once your new folder is created, it will be called “untitled folder.” To change its name, you can either do a slow double click on its name, or you can right click on the folder and then choose “Rename.”

To move files into the folder, simply drag them to it by clicking on the file in question and maneuvering it over the folder. And don’t forget that you can use these same techniques to create a new folder within the folder. And within that folder. And down deeper and deeper it goes.

If you ever want to delete a folder, you can either drag it directly to the icon for your computer’s Trash, or right click on the folder and select “Move to Trash” from the menu that appears.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

If you’ve been using your Mac for a while, you’ve probably accumulated a lot of shortcuts in your Dock, which can make finding things difficult. Adding a blank space or two is a great way to organize apps into groups.

A blank space on the Dock is just that: nothing. When you click on it, it won’t do or launch anything. They just let you scan your eye along your icons so you’ll be able to better make out your applications.

To begin, you first need to fire up our trusty old Terminal, which can be found in the Applications > Utilities folder.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Now that your Terminal is open, you’re going to want to type or paste the following command, and then hit Enter:

Now type the command:

Make sure to press Enter again. The procedure will look like this in your Terminal.

If you want to repeat this so as to add more spaces, you don’t need to keep reentering the same information in the Terminal over and over, you can simply repeatedly tap the Up Arrow to recycle the commands.

Now we have added three blank spaces to our Dock. You can add as many spaces as you like or will logically fit.

Once you’ve created a few spaces, you can drag them into place and also rearrange your application icons to compose your groups.

If you decide you no longer want or need a blank space, simply grab it with your mouse pointer like you would anything else on the Dock and drag it off until you see “Remove”.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

That’s it, now you have a really simple procedure for organizing your Dock icons into visually manageable application groups.

It’s a shame Apple doesn’t include this ability via a simpler method, but at least it can be done. So, now you’ll have a much more organized Dock and be able to launch your applications without hunting for them first.

How to move the sections on your Facebook Page’s left and right hand columns

Facebook’s new Page design may well have left your Page displaying some elements less prominently than you would like. The right hand column in particular can leave users scrolling for an eternity until they find the content they are looking for.

Some of the sections in the left and right hand columns can be moved around. In the left hand column scroll to the “Manage Tabs” option:

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

You’ll then get the change to reorder them. The About tab has to stay at the top but all the others can be reorganised. If you want to add or remove tabs (mine were a disaster zone before I did a little trimming and admin) click “Add or Remove Tabs” and follow the instructions.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

In the right hand column the Search, Info, About and Page Tips sections are immovable but the sections under those can be rearranged.

Click on the little edit icon to the left of the > arrow in any of the sections:

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

A box will appear that will enable you to drag and drop the sections to rearrange them according to your Page’s priorities:

Don’t forget to save after reordering.

Your Page may well have fewer sections than the example above. Simply decide what is most important for visitors to see.

So, I wanted to share a short “How to” with all of you today. This is something that has been bugging me for awhile on my Facebook homepage– those little shortcuts that Facebook offers you on the left side of your screen. ‘Why do they bug you, Jason?’ Good question class. What has been bugging me is the order they are in and the ones they have decided I need to see. I think that we should be making these decisions and not the MAN (a.k.a. Facebook). There is a way to edit this little shortcut list yourself and I’m going to show you how to do it. Now start that printer up or go old school and grab a paper and pencil. Here is the steps on how to edit your shortcut list.

How to Edit Facebook Homepage Shortcuts

Step 1: Log in to your Facebook page

Step 2: Once logged in, you should be on your home page. On this screen you will need to look to the left and you should see at the top a menu named Shortcuts

Step 3: There are two ways that you can edit these Shortcuts: One, just hover your mouse over the shortcut you wish to edit and three horizontal dots will appear. Click them.

Step 4: A menu will appear with either Unpin from Top, Pin to top or Hide from Shortcuts which are the only options they offer for editing the list. There might be other options for groups, but those are not important to this article. Choose if you want it pinned to the top or hidden from the list or, as my picture shows, Unpin from top.

Step 3.1: The other way to do this is by hovering your mouse over the shortcut menu and clicking edit link that appears at the top. Click it

Step 4.1: Now you will see a window with all the editing options and shortcuts you can work with. Again, you only get one new choice in here, but at least you can now see all your shortcut options. Click one of the down arrows next to a shortcut. Here you have the added option to Sort Automatically. When you are done adjusting things, just hit the Save button at bottom right.

Side note: In this window to unpin a shortcut you have to set it to Sort Automatically. Also notice that it does not always work from this window (this is a bug on Facebook’s side).

Bonus Tip

If you want a certain shortcut to be on the top, you will need to pin it to the top Last. They are put in order from last pinned to first which means what ever you pin last should show on the top of the menu. You should do the main pinning from the main shortcut list on the left of your home page. Found it worked much easier. Thought that would be helpful for you (You’re welcome).

You will need to mess around with this to get the hang of putting your shortcuts in the order you prefer.

Final Thoughts

This has some bugs/issues, but overall, you can edit the shortcuts, which I like. I wish they would make it easier to move them in the order I want like dragging them with my mouse. Facebook, get to work on that would you? Plus work some of the bugs out. Hope this was a helpful article for you.

As Gary pointed out in this video, it is no longer possible to use the Mac Photos app on the most recent version of macOS (Mojave) to directly post photos to Facebook. However, it is still possible to use the Photos app on the most recent version of iOS on the iPhone and iPad to post photos to Facebook. I find it strange that Apple decided to remove this capability on the Mac but retain it on the iPhone and iPad.

Richard: There are some big differences between how sharing of this nature is accomplished on iOS and macOS. For instance, notice that there is no Facebook app on macOS like there is iOS. But all of the sharing options hook either into the system or to apps. I suppose Facebook could create a macOS app that added a sharing option on macOS.

Is there anyway to move the pictures into an album in Facebook.

Jenny: You can post the pictures any way that Facebook allows you in the Web interface. I don’t really use Facebook albums, but if that is something you can do normally, then you can certainly use this technique to post them there.

The virtual destruction of Photos in Mojave has convinced me that Apple is no longer the user friendly company but now focused on serving IT specialists. Been faithful since the 1980s but seriously considering switching away from Apple.

charles: “virtual destruction?” What do you mean by that? Photos is pretty much the same as it was in High Sierra with a few new things. The removal of the Facebook hooks from macOS was generally seen as a good thing considering Facebook’s privacy issues this year.

Gary, My concern is that with over 30,000 pictures it takes so long to upload to find the pictures I would want to include in facebook

Nancy: Not sure what you mean. Do you simply mean that it takes too long to look through 30,000 to find the ones you want? If it is a recent one, it will be at the end of the list. Or, if you have it in an album, look in the album instead. You can also use Moments, Collections and Years to narrow it down quickly.
What I like to do, if I am posting say 10 pictures from something I just did, is mark them as Favorites (heart icon) in Photos. Then I look in “Favorites” when selecting to upload and see just those 10 photos. Can’t get any quicker than that. Then I clear out the favorites to use next time. But I could also create a temporary album in Photos that works the same way.

HELP! I tried everything you said gary, but when I go to the Media-photos file you mention I find none of my pictures there…not even ones I have edited today. When I go back to the mac photo app, I can edit my photos, but i can’t post them up to FB as I used to (as you said) but I also have to way to put the finished photos where I want to get at them from FB. The export control doesn’t help. HELP!

George: So what do you see when you try to use Media->Photos? What shows up? You can always use the drag-and-drop method I show in the video too. Or, just export (or drag and drop) to a folder or the Desktop and upload from there.

Gary, I’m way behind on your newsletters. Just seeing this one now. Can you tell me what size photo file is uploaded to Facebook or elsewhere? Does it upload the original size or something smaller? Or, does that depend on where it’s being uploaded? Thank you.

Jim: It should be the original size. But Facebook may process it after.

But you can’t change the size of the photos. Full-size pics take forever to upload, unless you have super fast internet, I guess.

AmyR: If you have limited bandwidth, then your best option is to export the photos from Photos, choosing a small file size/lower quality. Then upload those exported files to Facebook.

    February 2, 2016

During the last Photo Crush challenge, eliminating duplicate copies of photos was the most frequently-discussed topic. Not only are your photos in multiple locations, but you’ve got copies spread across numerous devices and drives.

In this post my aim is to provide a clear path out of the weeds for both PC and Mac users. With intentional action, you can consolidate your photo library and stop worrying about your memories getting lost in the clutter. Here’s how to begin:

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Step 1. Prevent New Duplicate Photos

It’s time to draw a line in the sand. Everything that came before may be in disarray (and take some time to sort), but from here forward you can do better.

Don’t wait until you’re totally organized to commit to more purposeful photo management. You can start where you are right now.

So what’s the secret to preventing duplicate copies? There are several:

    * Your photos should have a clearly designated home. Your #1 objective should be to get your images from each camera or device to that home.

    * The entire photo library should be backed up in at least one (ideally two) locations. Automated backup can reduce the anxiety that leads to duplicates.

    * When transferring images, always check which photo was the last to be imported. Then, import only the new pictures to your photo home. Clear off your memory card once the newest images have been backed up.

    * If you do make a copy (for whatever reason), delete the duplicate copy as soon as you feel assured the file transfer has completed. A spot-check is often sufficient.

    Step 2. Consolidate and Compare

Setting yourself up for future duplicate avoidance should feel like a big relief. With that zone under control, you can turn your focus to the photos you already have.

While there is duplicate-locating software for both Mac and PC, it’s not where I personally believe you should begin. Software is no substitute for good old-fashioned human eyeballs on the situation and can even make the progress more complicated that it needs to be.

I don’t recommend taking shortcuts when it comes to protecting your memories.

Remember the “home” I mentioned above? That’s where the master copy of every photo lives and where you’ll focus to eliminate duplicate files.

Start by creating a set of nested, chronological folders designated with years and months. If you have a particular subset of your photos that’s in the best shape, you can move just that subset into this folder structure. (If you don’t, that’s OK too.) This is your starting point.

Next, copy all batches of images to a location near that home. For example, create a “to sort” folder near your master photo library. Don’t worry about organization yet, simply copy every folder from every device into this location. You can label those incoming photos by location too, such as “photos from laptop”.

If you have a drive space issue, you can create multiple “to sort” folders or store your “to sort” folder on an external drive with sufficient space.

Note: The security of your photos is super important to me, so I am recommending making copies here. You might find it helpful to write down the original location of each folder you copy. Once this process is complete, you’ll be able to delete the originals.

So now you have a collection of folders within a “to sort” folder. They contain photos from multiple devices and you’re not sure which, if any, are already “home” in your master photo library.

Here’s the most important part: One sub-folder at a time, compare batches of photos to what’s in your home. The chronological structure will help you know where each image belongs. Using large icons or a preview pane can help, as can arranging your windows side-by-side.

Photos that already exist in the master photo library can be flagged for deletion by appending the folder name with “duplicate – to delete”. Photos that don’t exist in the master photo library can be moved into that structure.

While this process can take some time, it is the most straightforward approach. Folder by folder, you can determine which files are duplicates and which are not. And by being clear about which location is the master, you will avoid confusion.

Your goal is to move every non-duplicate image into the master photo library and be left with a “to sort” folder full of sub-folders flagged for deletion. With your master photo library newly-organized (even if only roughly), you can back it up in at least one location. This will leave you with the confidence to delete photos across your devices, eliminating duplicates once and for all.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Your iPhone’s Home Screen is a pretty personal place. Do you sort apps type, use folders, or is it just a mess that only you can decipher? Whichever way you like things, here’s how to organize your iOS Home Screen.

    Move Your Apps Around

To move an app around, tap and hold the icon for a few seconds until all the app icons start to wiggle. Be careful not to press too hard, or you’ll activate 3D touch.

Update: Starting with iOS 13, you now either need to long-press and tap “Rearrange Apps” or long-press and hold until the context menu disappears and the icons start wiggling.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Drag the app around into the new position you want it.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

If you drag it to the edge of the screen, you will be taken to the next page.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

You can even drag multiple apps at once by tapping and holding a single app icon, and then tapping more icons to add them to the stack. Yes, you’ll need to use a second finger.

    Create Folders

To create a Folder, drag one app icon, and then let it go on top of another.

This create a new Folder with both apps inside it. iOS suggests a folder name, but you can rename it by tapping the name and entering a new one.

You can move apps as normal within a Folder. Just drag one outside it to bring it back to the Home Screen.

To add additional apps to the Folder, just drag them into it.

    Delete Apps

To delete an app and all it’s data, tap and hold the app’s icon until it starts to wiggle and then tap the little X icon, followed by Delete.

There are also a few other ways to delete apps, including offloading them without deleting their data, so be sure to check out our full guide.

    Set the Wallpaper

The position of the apps on the Home Screen isn’t the only thing you can customise. To change the wallpaper, go to Settings > Wallpaper > Choose New Wallpaper, and then select one of the defaults or an image from your Camera Roll.

Like we said, how you organize your home screen just depends on you. Maybe you like different pages for different kinds of apps. Maybe you like everything you use most on the first page. Maybe you like folders; maybe you hate them. Whatever you like, now you know the techniques for getting it done.

Whether you hoard tabs (guilty!) or prefer an uncluttered display, Google Chrome wants to help sort out your browser once and for all. New tab groups, available now in Chrome Beta, make it easy to catalog as many websites as you can open.

Simply right click to group and label tabs with a custom name and color. Create collections for work, family, research, or play. Or, flex those organizational muscles by building sub-groups for specific tasks or people. Once tabs are linked, you can move or reorder them en masse.

“We’ve been testing out tab groups for several months now (as have some of you), and we’re finding new ways to stay organized,” Edward Jung, UX engineer for Chrome, wrote in a blog post. Some folks, for instance, prefer to arrange by topic, while others categorize by urgency (“ASAP,” “this week,” “later”) or headway (“haven’t started,” “in progress,” “need to follow up,” “completed”).

“My pro tip is that you can use an emoji as a group name,” Jung said, suggesting a heart for inspiration or an open book for articles to read. “Tab groups are customizable so you can decide how to use them. And just like regular tabs, your groups are saved when you close and reopen Chrome.”

In an effort to ensure browser stability and performance, tab groups are rolling out “slowly” in the latest version of Chrome, due out next week. The desktop-only feature will be available across Chrome OS, Windows, Mac, and Linux. There is no word on a mobile variant.

    Tidy up your Start menu

The Windows 10 Start menu is unlike previous versions of Windows. The basic concept is the same since the Start menu is still where you go to shut down the PC or access your programs and system utilities. But Microsoft added a new dimension to the Start menu with the addition of Windows Store apps and live tiles on the right side.

This is actually the only side of the Start menu that is completely customizable. You can group apps and desktop programs by categories you create, or decide to use only Windows Store apps with live tiles to get information on-the-fly.

Instructions in this article apply to Windows 10.

    Adjusting the Start Menu

The first thing you might want to do is change the size of your Start menu. By default, the Start menu is a little wide and not the more narrow column most of us are used to from Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

If you prefer the column, change the size.

    Select the Start button.

Hover your pointer over the far-right side of the Start menu until it turns into a double arrow.

When you see the arrow, click and drag it towards the left. The Start menu will now be in a more recognizable size.

    Grouping the Menu

Microsoft starts Windows 10 with some default groups. You can keep these as-is, edit the names, change the apps, reorder the groups, or delete them entirely.

To move a group. Select the group name and then drag to move the group to a new spot in the Start menu.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

To change the name of an app group, select the title. The title bar will turn into a text entry box. Delete the current title, type in your new title hit, and press Enter.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

To remove a group, you have to remove every app inside it and then it will delete automatically. Right-click each app one at a time and select Unpin from Start.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

    Adding Apps

There are two ways to add apps and desktop programs to the right side of the Start menu. The first way is to drag-and-drop from the left side of the Start menu. This can be from the “Most used” section or the “All apps” list. Drag-and-drop is the ideal method for adding new apps and tiles since you can control which group an app will be added to.

The other method is to right-click an app and select Pin to Start from the context menu. When you do this, Windows will automatically add your program as a tile to a new group at the bottom of the Start menu. You can then move the tile to a different group if you prefer.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Live Tiles in the Start Menu

Any program you add to the Start menu appears as a tile, but only Windows Store apps can support the live tiles feature. Live tiles display content from within the app such as news headlines, the current weather, or the latest stock prices.

When choosing to add Windows Store apps to your Start menu it’s important to think about where to place tiles with live content. If you like the idea of hitting the Start menu to quickly get the weather then make sure you place that tile in a prominent spot on your Start menu.

You can even change the tile’s size if you want to make it more prominent. To do this, right-click the tile and select Resize from the context menu. You’ll have several choices for sizes including small, medium, wide, and large. Each size is not available for every tile but you will see some variation of these options.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

The small size does not show any information, the medium size will for many apps, and the large and wide sizes definitely do — as long as the app supports the live tiles feature.

If there’s an app you don’t want displaying live tile information, right-click it, and select More > Turn live tile off. Those are the basics of the right side of the Start menu.

If you have an iPad with iOS 5 or later you can easily organize your photos on the tablet by creating photo albums. Once you have created an album you can then rearrange the order of the photos.

How to create a photo album on an iPad

    1. Open the Photos app and tap albums.
    2. Tap Edit, then tap New Album.
    3. Enter a name for the album and tap Save.
    4. Select photos to add to the new album, then tap Done.

You can go back to the album and edit it by adding, removing and rearranging photos in the album.
To rearrange photos in the album just touch the arrow icon in the top right corner. Then hold your finger on a photo and drag it where you want it. You can also select a photo(s) to remove it or copy it. If you tap on copy, you can then go to another app, like Mail for instance and paste the photo(s).

You can even create several albums then rearrange the order of the albums dragging them where you want.

Here’s a quick video showing how to create a photo album and arrange the photos in it.

Launchpad was part of Apple’s “Back to the Mac” initiative, which sought to make the desktop more like the iPad. It’s for everyone who wants a Home screen-like launcher on macOS, and a way to see, start, search for, delete, and otherwise manage apps on the Mac.

How to launch an app in Launchpad on Mac

    1. There are three ways to enter Launchpad:
      1. Click on the Launchpad icon in your Dock (it looks like a rocket).
      2. Do a four-finger pinch gesture on your trackpad.
      3. Press the Launchpad button on your Apple keyboard (look like a 3×2 grid of icons, and is also labeled F4).
    2. Click on the app you want to launch.

How to search an app in Launchpad on Mac

If you have a lot of apps installed you can easily search for them in Launchpad

      1. Open launchpad.
      2. Select the search bar at the top center of the Launchpad screen.

Enter the name of the application you wish to find.

You will notice that as soon as you start typing, Launchpad will begin filtering the results, so in most cases you shouldn’t even have to type the entire name of the app to find it.

How to move apps in Launchpad on Mac

If you want to have all your favorite and most used apps in a certain location in Launchpad, you can easily move them around to arrange them however you want.

        Open launchpad.

Click and hold the app you wish to move until it starts wiggling.

Drag the app to your new desired location.

How to organize apps into folders in Launchpad on Mac

You can put apps into folders — which are a group of apps —to better organize your Launchpad. It’s perfect for putting similar apps together.

Click and hold on the app you wish to put in a folder until it starts wiggling.

Drag the app on top of another app you wish to put into the same folder until a white box appears around both apps.

How to delete apps in Launchpad on Mac

You can certain apps on your Mac from Launchpad, which is a great way to keep your desktop clean and organized. Please note that you can’t delete certain built-in apps or apps that are running in the background on your Mac.

Click and hold the app you want to delete until it starts wiggling.

Click on the X that appears in the top-left corner of the app to delete it. If there is no X, the app cannot be deleted in Launchpad.

How to reset Launchpad on Mac

Sometimes after you install a new app (especially third-party apps) you may notice it doesn’t show up in Launchpad. There is a way to manually refresh Launchpad, which will most likely resolve the issue.

      1. Click on your desktop.
      2. Click on the Go menu. It’s up on the menu bar at the top of your screen.
      3. Press and hold the Option key.

      Click on Library.

Double click on the Dock folder.

Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen. It should look like this .

      Click on the Restart button.

Your computer will restart, and when it boots back up you should find all your apps available in Launchpad.

Facebook is all set to give Google Drive some competition with it’s new file sharing service. You can upload and share documents to anybody in Facebook using groups.

      Here’s how it works –

Facebook allows you to share files within a group. Anybody who is a member of the group can upload and share files within the group (except if posting permission is admin only). The visibility of an uploaded file also depends on the group privacy policy which can be either public or members only.

      Uploading files in a group.

To upload a file to a group, first navigate to the group, click the “Upload File” option and select a file to upload. You can upload almost any file except for music files and executables (sorry hackers).

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Once uploaded, a post will be added to to your group’s wall with details of the upload. Please note that the post will only appear on the group’s wall and not your personal wall. If you want to inform all your Facebook friends about the file you just uploaded, make sure you share the upload post.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

After a file is uploaded, any member of the group can view and download the file from the “Files” section.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

Now there is another cool feature that makes Facebook’s file sharing different: version control. That means you can upload multiple versions of the same file and maintain a version history.

To download a file, go to the “Files” section and click on the file to download. This will bring up the entire version history of the file having download option for each version. You can preview any version, download any version or upload a new version of the file.

How to Organize Facebook Groups on a PC or Mac

You can also delete any version of the file selectively. That means if you want to completely remove a file from a group, you will have to delete all versions. Although not a fun-killer, it would have been better if there was a “Delete all versions” option too. Especially if you decide to delete a file with 100 versions, that’s going to be a pain 🙂

      Features of Facebook Upload.

      Here’s a quick summary of Facebook’s upload feature –

      1. There is no limit to the number of files you can upload, although individual files can’t be bigger than 25Mb.
      2. Privacy settings can be easily set to control who can download files.
      3. Almost any type of file can be uploaded except for executables and music files.
      4. Version control really makes it easy to maintain files especially when you need to upload periodically with updates.
      5. Uploads can be marked spam or illegal by users.
      6. For most common file types like text, images, word documents etc, Facebook provides a preview option. Previews of images and simple text are rendered in popup boxes while word documents are previewed using Microsoft’s online office application.

Learning about the Finder is the first step toward finding and organizing your documents, media, folders, and other files.

The Finder is the first thing that you see when your Mac finishes starting up. It opens automatically and stays open as you use other apps. It includes the Finder menu bar at the top of the screen and the desktop below that. It uses windows and icons to show you the contents of your Mac, iCloud Drive, and other storage devices. It’s called the Finder because it helps you to find and organize your files.

      Open windows and files

To open a window and see the files on your Mac, switch to the Finder by clicking the Finder icon (pictured above) in the Dock. Switching to the Finder also reveals any Finder windows that might be hidden behind the windows of other apps. You can drag to resize windows and use the buttons to close , minimize , or maximize windows. Learn more about managing windows.

When you see a document, app, or other file that you want to open, just double-click it.

Change how your files are displayed

To change how files are displayed in Finder windows, use the View menu in the menu bar, or the row of buttons at the top of the Finder window. You can view files as icons , in a list , in columns , or in a gallery . And for each view, the View menu provides options to change how items are sorted and arranged, such as by kind, date, or size. Learn more about customizing views.

When you view files in a gallery, you can browse your files visually using large previews, so it’s easy to identify images, videos, and all kinds of documents. Gallery View in macOS Mojave even lets you play videos and scroll through multipage documents. Earlier versions of macOS have a similar but less powerful gallery view called Cover Flow .

      Use the Preview pane

The Preview pane is available in all views by choosing View > Show Preview from the menu bar. Or press Shift-Command (⌘)-P to quickly show or hide the Preview pane.

macOS Mojave enhances the Preview pane in several ways:
