Historic home destroyed in fire

By Rachel Davis

An investigation is underway after one of Keokuk, Iowa’s most iconic homes went up in flames, early Sunday morning.

Keokuk fire officials tell Local 4 News, the Grand Anne Bed and Breakfast caught fire just before 3:30 a.m.

The fire was contained mostly to the attic, but the entire home suffered water and smoke damage.

As of now, officials don’t know what started the fire.

Grand Anne’s general manager Cretia Hesse told our affiliate KHQA, the home means a great deal to Keokuk.

“A huge piece of history,” said Hesse. “A beautiful piece of history, we operated like a ministry if you will, people came in off the beaten paths out there for R&R here.”

No one was in the bed and breakfast at the time due to a power outage from Thursday’s severe thunderstorms.

It’s unclear if and when it’ll reopen.
