Dina Bourque, the principal of Iberia Middle School, passed away early on Thursday morning in a road traffic collision, according to school officials.
According to reports, shortly after 6 a.m., a crash happened close to the intersection of North Grand Prairie Road and US 90 West Frontage Road in New Iberia. According to New Iberia Police, there has been a “major crash” that has caused the area’s highways to be closed.
Captain Leland K. Laseter of the New Iberia Police Department said that an initial investigation showed that when the driver of the tractor failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of West Frontage Road, the tractor was driving trailers containing sugarcane on North Grand Prairie Road.
Following the collision between the trailer and Bourque’s car, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to authorities, classes are continuing in session and both staff and students can access grief counselors at the school.
Bourque led Iberia Middle School since 2016, and graduated from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in 1996.
