Colin Jeffrey Haynie: Who Is He? Teenager from Utah admits to killing his mother and three siblings
Haynie fatally shot his three siblings, Alexis, 17, Mathew, 15, and Maylan, 12, as well as his mother Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 52.
GRANTSVILLE, UTAH: On Tuesday, a Grantsville, Utah, man admitted to killing his mother and three siblings in early 2020 when he was 16 years old. Colin Jeffrey Haynie, now 19 years old, was present in the Tooele courthouse as his attorney announced that he had entered a guilty plea to four charges of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder. Haynie shot his three siblings, Alexis, 17, Mathew, 15, and Maylan, 12, as well as his mother Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 52.
Haynie admitted to shooting and wounded his father Colin Haynie and to one count of attempted aggravated murder. They are all first-degree felonies, all five counts. When the judge asked Haynie if he was giving up his right to a preliminary hearing by submitting the guilty pleas, Haynie responded in the affirmative. The Tooele County Attorney’s Office issued a news release stating that the potential punishment for each crime is “an indeterminate prison term of not less than 25 years and may be for life” because Haynie was 16 when he shot his family.
According to the prosecution, Haynie skipped school on January 17, 2020, to wait for his family to get home. The teen allegedly shot and killed his mother and sister, Maylan, 12, when they arrived that day about 1 pm. According to prosecutors, both individuals sustained many gunshot wounds to their heads, necks, and upper bodies. Later that day, according to a charging document, Haynie allegedly did the same to his two siblings, Mathew, 14, and Alexis, 15.
The attempted aggravated murder accusation derives from the fact that Haynie shot his father in the leg the same evening he arrived home. After a battle over the firearm during which the elder Haynie was only slightly hurt, Haynie is said to have managed to strike his father in the head with a hard, unidentified object. When the accusations against Haynie were made public, Tooele County Attorney Scott Broadhead stated that a neighbor then dialed 911 and drove the father and boy to the hospital. He said that the hospital had detained the teen.
According to court records, “the father testified that he told the defendant that the defendant’s mother would be sorry if the defendant murdered him.” He claimed that the accused informed him that his mother and other siblings had passed away. A family friend reportedly brought the two of them to the hospital for treatment after the father was able to take the revolver away from his son.
Republican legislation mandates that fathers provide child support for unborn children.
When Haynie’s father asked the friend to transport them to the hospital, KSL reported that the buddy “just happened to pass by the house to drop something off, unknowing of the awful events that had taken place.” Haynie allegedly informed the family friend that he had just slain his family members as they were being driven to the hospital. From the automobile, the friend dialed 911, and police detained Haynie at the hospital. Since his detention, the adolescent is said to have refused to cooperate. He has persistently refused to discuss his motivation for the atrocity, despite telling investigators that he intended to kill everyone in the house but himself. Currently set to appear for his sentence hearing on December 7, 2022, Haynie is being held in a juvenile prison facility on a bond of $4 million.
