The teenager stunned observers and infuriated England’s attack as he broke the 111-year-old record, smashing his way to 69 not out at lunch — easily surpassing Glenn McGrath’s previous record for an Aussie No 11 — 61 — as well as erasing Warwick Armstrong’s 45 not out in 1902, the previous best on debut. Just after lunch he was on 87.
