Yuji Horii Wants to Remake First Dragon Quest Like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D
The Dragon Quest series is at its most popular having just celebrated its 35th anniversary. The recent Dragon Quest XI reinvigorated fans and newcomers alike, and the series has many new places to go. As Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate announced, there are plenty other titles on the horizon. While the celebration mainly covered upcoming newer properties surrounding Dragon Quest, there were a few teases of what’s to come. A remake of Dragon Quest 3 like the recent 2D RPG from Square, Octopath Traveler. In the announcement of a new remake, series creator Yuji Horii discussed his plans for other remakes. With Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D coming worldwide, the team is planning to expand their remakes to older titles.

Why Would Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Get Remakes ?
Discussing how the team wanted to start by recreating the third Dragon Quest, he later explained that the plan was to remake the first two titles as well. While the focus currently remains on Dragon Quest 3, more pixel art remakes are surely welcome. With how well received the style and gameplay of recent RPGs are, it’s clear how Square Enix would want to capitalize on this. Being so direct about their intentions, Yuji Horii clearly understands the need for remakes of such classic titles. What these remakes would hold is beyond our current understanding. It’s curious to wonder whether or not the team is looking to other titles to update such as Dragon Quest 4. While the nature of a remake might put off some purists, it’s a great sign of pixel art appreciation. So while the news of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake is yet to come, there is certainly many more remakes on the way.
