Gene Deer was born in Indianapolis in 1959 to a musical family, Gene’s early influences included artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Johnny Cash. From the begining to play the guitar at six, he formed the Gene Deer Band in 1978, quickly earning a reputation as one of the region’s best blues-rock guitarists.

In 1997 he got recognition for Gene’s second album, “Livin’ with the Blues,”, showcased his versatility and maturity as a songwriter and performer. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Gene continued recording and performing, releasing singles and EPs, collaborating with artists like Ed King, Yank Rachell, and Erin Harpe.

Gene was a multi-talented artist, serving as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader for over four decades. Known for his soulful voice, impressive guitar skills, and original songs blending blues, rock, and country, Deer was a fixture at the historic Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis.

He recorded two albums for the Slippery Noodle Sound label and earned the title of “Best Local Blues Band” for nine consecutive years (1995-2003) by Nuvo Newsweekly readers.

In 2022, He diagnosed with cancer, Gene Deer underwent treatment but never stopped making music. He played and sang until his final days, expressing gratitude and love for his fans and friends.

His musical journey extended beyond Indiana, with national and international tours alongside blues legends like Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, and Edgar Winter. In 2002, Indy car driver Kenny Brack appointed Gene Deer as the band leader and musical director for Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers, touring with the Indy Racing League in 2003. Additionally, Gene toured South Africa in 2007 with a supporting band named The Raging Calm.
