Tug McGraw passed away on 5 January 2004 in Brentwood, Tennessee after 9 months of initial surgery. He was hospitalized during spring training on 12 March 2003 and he got diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor.

The malignancy returned in inoperable form because of not excising the tumor totally by the surgery. He lived for over 9 months and died.
