‘You’re my bird’ trend takes over TikTok

The TikTok trend sees people sharing a photo of themself with a friend, partner or family member and writing on the screen: “You’re my bird.”

It’s usually done in a slideshow format and has slow, emotional music in the background. The second page then says: “You’re what?”

On the final page, there is a picture of a male sculpture saying “I can’t do this anymore” while a bird replies: “Yes you can.”

What does it mean?

If you look closely at the image everyone is sharing at the end of the slideshow, the trend suddenly makes a whole lot more sense.

It’s a photo of a famous bronze statue in which a small metal bird is flying and lifting a man off the floor with its two feet.

The trend sees people tagging someone and saying ‘you’re my bird’, symbolising that person is the bird in the photo.

Your ‘bird’ is the person who always picks you up and gets you back on your feet when you are down and need some help.

More about the bronze sculpture

The sculpture was made by Oslo-based Norweigan artist Fredrik Raddum whose clever work often explores political themes.

It’s from a 2017 collection titled ‘Hacienda Paradise– Utopia Experiment’ which was exhibited at the art gallery Galleri Brandstrup.

The sculptures tell the true story of a group of Europeans who left their homes to live on the Galapagos Islands in the 1930s.

It’s called The Galapagos Affair and a number of different people from all walks of life move to the islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The statues show the people in mysterious situations. Two of them went missing and what happened to them still remains a mystery.
