The post-credit Daily Bugle cameo in Far From Home!

By William Rodriguez

Spider-Man: Far From Home is finally here and features one cameo appearance we certainly weren’t expecting but are so happy to have

It’s been just over two months since the box office behemoth Avengers: Endgame steamrolled its way through cinemas but Marvel doesn’t appear to be slowing down with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home arriving hot on its heels.

The latest MCU film is a brilliant follow-up to the earth-shattering events of Avengers: Endgame and offers up a wonderful superhero flick that has to be regarded as one of the best Spider-Man films of the last 20 years.

Not least thanks to a certain cameo we get in Far From Home’s first end-credits scene.

J.K. Simmons is back as J. Jonah Jameson!

After three superb performances as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, there simply wasn’t anyone else who could pull off the role of the Daily Bugle editor other than J.K. Simmons.

It’s a huge relief, therefore, to see the Whiplash actor back in arguably his most iconic role in the mid-credits scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

In Far From Home, the Spider-Man-hating Jameson appears in a well-received cameo that eventually winds up with the newsman essentially revealing Spider-Man’s true identity to the world, courtesy of a doctored video from the film’s villain, Mysterio.

How Far From Home’s JJ differs from past versions

With the MCU being its own separate universe from the worlds established in other superhero films, it’s unsurprising to see that, while played by the same actor, J. Jonah Jameson isn’t quite the same character we last saw in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

For a start, Jameson, who is normally portrayed as a newspaper editor for The Daily Bugle, is a news anchor of sorts in Far From Home.

However, much like the very controversial Alex Jones and his show Infowars, this version of JJ seems to be going in for the conspiracy theory angles that permeate so much of the media these days.

It’s a similar portrayal to the one seen in the PS4 Spider-Man game where JJ appears on the radio spouting nonsense news about Spider-Man in order to tarnish the superhero’s reputation.

Spider Man PS4 Just The Facts With J Jonah Jameson

While it strays from the traditional newspaperman we know from past iterations, it’s an update that works very well for a modern re-telling of the character.

Furthermore, having J. Jonah Jameson appear as a conspiracy theorist in a Spider-Man film that features Mysterio, where the premise centres on not knowing quite what to believe, is a stroke of genius in Donald Trump’s post-truth world.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hit cinemas on July 2nd, 2019 and is well worth the watch if you’re craving some superhero goodness to kickstart your summer and oh boy is it good to have J.K. Simmons back as J. Jonah Jameson!
