‘She’s let me thrive’: Caitlin Clark credits Coach Lisa Bluder after breaking B1G scoring record

By William Rodriguez

With a layup in the second quarter Caitlin Clark became the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer. There was no stoppage or commemoration — Clark just sprinted back on defense. That’s because she wasn’t even aware that was the shot that broke the record set by Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell back in 2018.

“Honestly, I didn’t even know at what point it occurred,” Clark said. “I think the coolest thing is the names that I get to be around — those are people I grew up watching.”

Clark totaled 35 points in the 110-74 win over Northwestern Wednesday night. She now needs 103 points to break the all-time scoring record set by Kelsey Plum.

“I’ve played with a lot of really good teammates and Coach Bluder — this is what she pitched to me. We play a really fast, up-tempo offense and you’re going to have the ball in your hands,” Clark said. “She’s kind of just let me thrive and be me. There’s probably not a lot of coaches that would allow that every single night, so I’m very thankful.”

“Caitlin, of course, becomes the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer with this many games to go,” Bluder said. “Overtaking somebody like the caliber of Kelsey Mitchell is outstanding — really proud of her.”

The Hawkeyes improved their record to 20-2. Clark is averaging a smooth 32.1 points per game with more records to break in the near future.
