Just after takeoff, a single-engine plane at Mason County Airport in Ludington, Michigan, crashed, killing the couple from Indiana and their two dogs.
The Michigan State Police shared on social media that the plane crashed into a field on Sunday, November 26 at around 10 a.m., killing Randy Strebig, 60, Allison Wheaton, 43, and the two dogs.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane was taking off in less-than-ideal conditions with a destination of Albuquerque, New Mexico, according to airport officials.
Strebig and Wheaton were on the board of directors of Maine-based International Seaplane Fly-In and were married in September after 17 years together.
The FAA reported that a fire started after the landing but could not identify the reason of the incident. According to authorities, the National Transportation Safety Board started supporting the incident investigation on Monday.

“I woke up this morning and the shock of last evenings news still had not sunk in. However, yesterday we lost two absolutely amazing souls. I have been blessed to race and be friends with Randy since I returned home from Purdue in 2005. I met Allison shortly after she moved and have loved her from the moment we met. I have some of the best memories racing, riding, paddling, screwing off, and laughing with both of them. Allison Wheaton was the best role model for my daughters. You two have added so much to our lives and it will not be the same without you. We love you both,” a tribute post shared on Facebook said.
“My heart is broken beyond belief. Allison Wheaton and Randy did so much for not only this community but throughout the country. Allison was one of my main partners in crime…we had so many adventures together. I knew that no matter what, if Allison was involved, it was going to be fun,” another post said.
