One dead in DeWitt apartment fire

A 67-year-old woman is dead after an apartment fire early Friday morning in DeWitt, Iowa.
One firefighter has also been hospitalized.
DeWitt Police Department and DeWitt Fire Department officials responded to the building on the 1100 block of Humeston Road around 4:20 a.m.
Initially, police officers entered the building to see if occupants remained inside, but were briefly turned back by the heavy smoke and intense heat.
Upon arriving moments later, The DeWitt Fire Department battled collapsing sections of the roof. One portion hit a firefighter who was then taken to DeWitt Genesis Hospital. He was treated for minor injuries.
The victim’s name is not being released at this time until family is notified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s office.
