Microsoft Windows 11 memes circulate amidst Panos Panay virtual event

By Isabella Wilson

Despite being due to drop today (24th June), the internet saw a leaked version of Windows 11 way before the official release date.

In true Twitter fashion, social media users raced online to create memes about the incident.

Panos Panay hosts virtual Windows 11 launch

Although the build for Windows 11 was leaked, the official launch date for Microsoft is today (24th June). To release the operating system, Microsoft streamed a virtual event on June 24 at 11AM ET. The live stream was hosted by Panos Panay.

However, many have made memes out of the fact that the live stream still went ahead – seems most had already seen Windows 11 via the leaked version.

With that being said, it’s important to note that the leaked build may not be the complete operating system.

What is the leaked version?

Reportedly, revealing details of the new version of Windows were initially spotted on Baidu back on 15th June.

The leaked build saw advanced features to the operating system, including a rounded interface, a new Start Menu, and widgets.

However, the live stream event for the official launch of Windows 11 revealed some other elements. Microsoft Teams will now be built into the operating system – most likely as a result of people working from home due to COVID-19. Likewise, Microsoft introduced “multiple desktops” with their own backgrounds and utility.

Another interesting addition to Windows 11 is that, when users unplug their monitor, the operating system will remember how you configured your layout and put it back to the way that it was.
