McDonald’s Pokémon Cards 2022: Which Cards Are Worth The Most

The much-loved Pokémon card promotion at McDonald’s has returned for the second year in a row, with complete sets of this year’s Pokémon TCG cards already being resold for $40-50 on reselling sites like eBay. Last year, Pokémon fans flocked to McDonald’s to purchase Happy Meals which each contained a pack of four Pokémon cards. Unfortunately, the cards were quickly wiped out by scalpers and resellers, with shortages prevalent across the globe. Perhaps that’s the reason for this year’s more low-key announcement of the Happy Meal promotion, which is already available in the UK and Canada and is officially launching in the US on August 16.

This year’s Pokémon card Happy Meal promotion offers an even better gift than last year’s. During this year’s limited-time event, Happy Meals will include a pack of four Pokémon cards like last year, plus a special coin and a Pokémon Match Battle toy. There are fifteen different cards to collect: Bewear, Chinchou, Cutiefly, Drampa, Flaaffy, Gossifleur, Growlithe, Lapras, Ledyba, Pangoro, Pikachu, Rowlet, Smeargle, Tynamo, and Victini. The special coin Pokémon and coin color will change each week during the event, beginning with a purple Rowlet coin and a green Smeargle coin.

Unsurprisingly, the most valuable Pokémon cards in this year’s McDonald’s collection are the holographic variants. Currently, the most valuable Pokémon card is Pikachu, with some recently sold cards on eBay fetching $10-11 each, though most are selling for $6-7. Behind Pikachu, holographic foil cards of Gossifleur, Growlithe, Rowlet, and Victini from the McDonald’s collaboration have recently sold on eBay for between $3-5. Though Smeargle also has a holographic card, they’re currently selling for the same as the non-holographic cards in the collection, which are selling for $1-3 each.

It’s worth noting that holographic Pikachu cards from last year’s collection are still fetching $10-15 on eBay, though many of the top-priced cards have been professionally graded. The limited-edition Pokémon coins don’t appear to have made their way onto the reselling website yet, with sellers opting to focus on the Pokémon cards from the McDonald’s Happy Meals. The cards selling for the highest prices seem to be shipping internationally to countries that do not have the McDonald’s promotion, or from the UK and Canada where the promotion is already live.

Unfortunately, based on the eBay listings, it looks like the same sellers are listing dozens of cards from the collection, suggesting that 2022’s Happy Meal promotion could experience the same problems with scalpers that were prevalent during last year’s promotion. Regardless, Pokémon fans in the US can try their luck at getting their hands on the McDonald’s Pokémon collaboration from August 16. If they’re lucky, they might snag one of the collection’s six holographic Pokémon TCG cards and, the top-valued card of them all, the beloved face of the Pokémon franchise, Pikachu.
