By Rachel Davis

Marshall Lee Williford Jr., 68, Edenton man has been arrested on multiple charge. According to reports, Williford is charged with four charges of first-degree kidnapping, four counts of taking indecent liberties with children, one case of second-degree rape, and one crime of statutory sexual offense.

It was reported early today that Marshall Williford of Windsor NC has committed suicide. However, details surrounding his cause of death is still unknown.

Special Agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have arrested Marshall Williford, 68, of Edenton for alleged child sex crimes in Bertie County that date back over 40 years ago.

Agents arrested Marshall Williford, 68, of Edenton on several charges including rape and indecent liberties. His arrest stems from an investigation on May 15, 2023, where the Windsor Police Department requested the SBI investigate an alleged rape that occurred several decades ago. This investigation also included assistance from the FBI Greenville office.

On Friday, Williford was arrested at his home and charged with the following:
4 counts of first-degree kidnapping, 4 counts of indecent liberties with children, 1 count second-degree rape, 1 count statutory sex offense.

Williford went before a magistrate and was issued a $900,000 secured bond. He was booked at the Chowan County Detention Center.

Officials said the alleged incidents happened between 1978 and 1988. There are multiple victims whose ages range from five to 14 years old at the time.

A spokesman for the Windsor Police Department said Thursday that the allegations were immediately turned over to the SBI after they were received. The spokesman said they were not sure whether the alleged crimes occurred in Windsor.

Angie Grube, a spokeswoman for the SBI, said Thursday that Williford was a resident of Windsor “at the time of the offenses” but later moved to Chowan County. Williford “was known to the victims and their families,” she said.

The allegations against Williford “all came to light” when the Windsor Police Department was approached about them this spring, Grube said.

“To our knowledge, it had not been previously reported to law enforcement,” she said.
