Kurtis Charters and Joshua Camps: Where Are They At Present?
On October 1, 2019, Tushar Atre was taken from his home by a group of people. It shocked the whole community. In spite of the fact that CBS’ “48 Hours: Who Shot the Tech Exec?” had video surveillance, detectives were still able to link four people to the case after a while. This is where we come in. If you want to learn more about Kurtis Charters and Joshua James Camps specifically, and how they played a role in the self-made entrepreneur’s abduction and murder, we’ve got you covered.
Kurtis Charters and Joshua Camps: Who Are They?
Both Kurtis Charters and Joshua Camps didn’t really know Tushar Atre, but they were close to two other people who did. Their friends worked for the tech/cannabis venturer for two weeks in August 2019. If you look at official records, Joshua was only Kaleb Charters and Stephen Nicolas Lindsay’s acquaintances. Kurtis is Kaleb’s big brother. So, when the two allegedly decided to rob their former employer to get back at them for a wage dispute, both Kurtis and Joshua allegedly went along for personal gain and to make sure the job went smoothly.
According to the quartet’s cell phone pings, they left the Lancaster home shared by Kurtis and Joshua on September 30 and went to Santa Cruz together. They came back on October 1. It’s even said that he only got into this mix because he had not just a car (he drove a blue sedan) but also a lot of guns (a search yielded five guns, including a semi-automatic rifle, from his place later on). Josh was “the muscle” in their robbery scheme that went awry, prosecutor said in court. “For lack of a better word,” he said.
Kurtis Charters and Joshua Camps: Where Are They Now?
They were all arrested in May 2020 for the murder of Tushar Atre. Kurtis Charters and Joshua Camps, as well as Kaleb Charters and Stephen Nicolas Lindsay, were all charged with murder. All of them were charged with seven different crimes, but Joshua has an extra charge because he used an assault rifle to commit the crime. First-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, murder, kidnapping and kidnapping to commit another crime are all on the list of charges. If they are found guilty, they could spend the rest of their lives in a State Correctional Facility.
A judge refused them bail when they were first detained, which means that Kurtis and Joshua are still in jail while they wait for their trial to start. They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges. They are also in the Santa Cruz County Jail today, at the ages of 24 and 25.
It’s important to point out that in a pre-trial hearing, even though surveillance footage shows Kurtis running “toward Mr. Atre and physically bringing him into the vehicle,” his lawyers say he didn’t take part in the first assault. In fact, the defense says that he ran away into the street, then came back “to stop the blood flow from Atre’s [stab] wound.” It isn’t clear who stabbed and then shot the businessman.
