To take over as Festa’s Minister for Aging Affairs in the Deval Patrick administration, Clark ran in the special election after Festa resigned from the House of Commons in October 2007. During the war campaign elected, she emphasized her legal skills and declared “making stability in state aid” her main policy priority. In January, she won the Democratic primary with 65% of the vote, defeating two other Melrose Democrats. She beat Republican real estate developer Mark B. Hutchison by a margin of 63% to 37%. She was re-elected to a full uncontested term in November 2008.
