Watch your Video Files on your Wii

The Nintendo Wii is a great little game console, sure to occupy you for countless hours either playing Wii Sports or Twilight Princess. Going away from the “games only” approach of previous Nintendo consoles, the Wii is also a quite capable photo viewer. But what is most interesting, at least for this website, is Wii’s video playback capabilities. With a little bit of help, you too can play back your video files on the Wii.

Nintendo Wii supports playback of AVI and MOV files using the MJPEG codec, although on my version of the Nintendo Wii manual (Australian), only MOV files is said to be supported (meanwhile, AVI is listed as the only supported format on the Nintendo Europe website – let’s just assume both formats will work). The audio portion of the movie seems to only support PCM uncompressed audio, which is a shame. MJPEG is not the most efficient video codec around, and at 2048kbps (about 15 MB per second of video), you will only get marginally acceptable quality for DVD resolution video.

In other words, the Nintendo Wii is not best suited for video playback, but with a 2GB SD card, you might be able to fit about an hour of DVD quality video onto the memory card.

There is only 3 things that you need. Of course you need a Nintendo Wii, a SD memory card that is at least 1GB, and Wii Video 9.

I can tell you that there was a dude that streamed movies over his mediaserver/pc to the WiiU last year, when the WiiU was just out. I think there was a video on youtube of that.

What’s the point.. I can connect the HDMI cable to my laptop and that’s easier.

Not as easy and just sticking a flash drive in my Wii U and playing videos. Jeez louise!!

Obviously, the guy could browse his movies from his couch with the gamepad/touchscreen, which is a tad more convenient than having to get out of your seat everytime. Also, no need to run back and forth with a USB stick, because once it’s downloaded to the server, it’s accessible to the WiiIU.

So there obviously is a setup you need to go through, but once that’s done, it should be more convenient than fiddling about with a USB stick everytime. You don’t have to like it TC, i’m just telling you what i know.

Wii U Play MP4 Videos-How to Let Wii U be Able to Stream MP4 Videos from Your PC?

While the Wii U doesn’t appear to officially support the streaming of videos from your local network, one owner discovered that the functionality is there Thursday and is accessibly through the new Nintendo console’s web browser.

2. Scroll down until you see Internet Information Service and expand that.
3. Click the boxes next to Web Management Tools and World Wide Services to enable both and then click OK.
4. Now go to Control Panel and then Administrative Tools. You should see Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager listed. Open that.
5. You should see your PC listed in the left panel. Expand that until you see Sites -> Default Web Site.
6. Right-click on Default Web Site to bring up a menu and go to Manage Web Sites -> Advance Settings.
7. Change the Physical Path in the Advanced Settings to the folder that is holding your mp4 video files and click OK.
8. Now double-click on the MIME Types icon on the IIS Manager screen. If mp4 is not listed, click Add in the right panel.
9. Enter “.mp4” for the File Type Extension and “Video/mp4” for the Mime Type and then click OK.
10. Go back to the IIS Manager screen and double-click on Directory Browsing.
11. In right panel of the Directory Browsing screen, click Enable.

With that done, you can now use the Wii U web browser to directly browse to your PC’s IP address and play mp4 videos. If you don’t know your PC’s ip address follow these directions.

1. Click the Start menu and enter “cmd” into the “Search programs and files” text box.
2. Type “ipconfig” in the command prompt and hit enter.
3. Your PC’s IP address will be displayed.
4. Enter that IP address in your Wii U web browser

Mac and Linux directions on setting up a local web server can be found by searching Google or Bing for “Mac web server setup” or “Linux web server setup”.

Introduction: How to Stream Video to Your Wii

This instructable will allow you to stream video on your computer or from the internet to your Wii.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to fill a very frustrating void that I’ve encountered. Many sites claim that streaming video to your Wii over a local area network is easy as pie, but I have yet to see detailed instructions. So, here you go!

Step 1: What You’ll Need:

A Wii, connected to a home network.
The Homebrew Channel.
MPlayerWii, loaded properly onto your SD card.

On your computer, you’ll need to install VLC, a small but full-featured media player.

You’ll also need to find the local IP address of the computer(s) you want to stream from.

To do this, open a command prompt and type “ipconfig.” This gives you your IP address. Write it down!

Now, open the “mplayerwii.conf” file on the SD drive, and add a line that looks like this:

“stream = ip address]:8080/”

So, my line would look like this:

Save that file, put the SD card into your Wii, and load MPlayer from the Homebrew Channel.

Step 2: Prepare VLC for Streaming

Select the Media menu, and click on “Streaming. “

In the open dialog, select the file you want, and click “Stream”. The Stream Output dialog will open automatically.

Check the “play locally” box if you want the file to play on your computer simultaneously. It’s good to do this the first time, to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Also check the “HTTP” box. Leave the port set to 8080, and keep the “Address” box blank.

Next select “XBox” from the profile menu, click “Stream,” and you’re ready to go!

Step 3: Connect the Wii!

The last remaining step is to select the ip address entry you added to the mplayerwii.conf file. Remember that? Looks like “

If the stream doesn’t load, you’ll need to add a web interface to the player. To do this, go to the Tools menu, and select Add Interface -> Web Interface. Select the IP entry again, and it should work like a charm.

To set the file to open with VLC player by default you should be able to right click and open it with your favorite text edit program

When I went to open mplayerwil.conf it asked what I want to open it with and I opened with VLC. I think I messed up. There’s no place to put my ip address. What do I do?

i am following instructions but wii wont look for ip it only gives me options to read from card

I am looking for the file and have a folder called mplayer_ce and then when i go in to it i have many sub folders and ext. on called mplayer which is a conf file do i put the “stream= address>:8080/” there or in a ext called input which is also a conf file. Help would be appericated

You should be using MPlayerWii, not MPlayer CE. 😉

While they have almost the same name, they are two very different programs. This won’t work with MPlayer CE because it doesn’t have a streaming option. The only online media you can use with MPlayer CE is pre-defined, and not very customize-able. Plus, it would be a very different process to go into the configuration files to be able to do such a thing. All in all, it’s just easier and more efficient to use MPlayerWii, plus with that, there’s a guarantee that it will work. Just make sure your processor is a good one and you have at least 2 or 3 GB of RAM, or else the video, though it does stream, will be in poor quality and very glitchy.
