How to use dropbox with an iphone or ipod touch

If you don’t already have a free Dropbox account, this is something you need to do. Essentially, Dropbox is online storage that syncs to a folder on whatever computer you have it installed on. The program places a Dropbox folder on your computer, and whatever files you put in it are automatically uploaded to the Dropbox website and downloaded/updated in the Dropbox folder of any other computers you have it installed on.

The Dropbox app for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad works along with your existing account. Just download the app (it’s free) and log into your account. You are first shown a getting started PDF which tells you everything you need to know.

Using the Dropbox App

With the Dropbox app, you are able to view and share files that are in your Dropbox, as well as upload new files. The app supports a surprising amount of file types that can be viewed for images, music, Microsoft documents, PDFs, and a few more obscure file types. For a complete list see the image below.

I was very impressed with how the Dropbox app handled viewing files. In particular, the image quality of PDFs was not downgraded, making even small text perfectly legible. Viewing image files is much the same with no loss of quality. I was surprised to find that I could actually stream an .mp3 directly to my iPod without having to download it. It’s also possible to play movies, but they have to be encoded with some pretty specific settings and filetypes to play through the app.

One way the Dropbox app is different from the normal Dropbox is that you have to pick what files you want to sync to you device with the “Favorite” option. This is done because of the relatively limited space available on and iPhone or iPod, since automatically syncing and downloading your entire Dropbox could fill your device with unwanted files and strain your data plan if you have an iPhone.

To favorite a file and download it for offline viewing, simply select the file from your Dropbox App. When you’re viewing your file, click the star icon at the bottom of the screen to add the file to your favorites.

Back at the Dropbox home screen, click the Favorites button on the bottom left which will bring up the files you selected. If there is a yellow (!) icon next to the file, it means the file has been updated and needs to be re-synced to get the current version. To the right of the file will be a green circle with a down pointing arrow. Clicking this will download/update the file on your device.

Easily transfer files from your device to Dropbox

As I was writing this article, I was trying to figure out the best way to get the screen captures from my iPod to my computer and, lo and behold, the answer was my Dropbox app. By clicking the + symbol at the top right of the main Dropbox screen, you can upload any files currently in your photo/video album into your Dropbox account. From there they will be placed into your online storage and any computers you’ve installed Dropbox on.

You can also share the link to any of your files by clicking the bottom left button while viewing a file.

Conclusion

All in all, this is a fairly useful app if you already use Dropbox (which, as I said before, you should). If your iPhone/iPod Touch has limited memory capacity and you find yourself low on space, you can use this app to easily unload any pictures you might have taking up space while still being able to view them just as easily.

How To Use Dropbox On Your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad

Step 1 – Go to the App Store

Tap the App Store icon on your iOS dashboard.

Step 2 – Find the Dropbox app

In the search field, Type in dropbox. Click the Dropbox app that appears on the list.

Step 3 – Download the App, it’s free!

Tap the FREE button to download and install the Dropbox app.

Step 4 – Launch the Dropbox app

After the download and installation are complete, Dropbox will appear on your dashboard. Tap the Dropbox icon to open it.

Step 5 – Sign-in to Dropbox (requires internet connection)

That’s the end of the step by step, but we have more to do before we finish. Let’s take a look at some of the features of this application.

Browse Your Dropbox and View Files

You can browse your Dropbox and view all of its contents from your iPhone using the My Dropbox menu. The Dropbox app can display almost any type of file stored in your box, including images, pdf files, videos, documents, and spreadsheets.

While viewing a file, there are a few different things you can do besides just looking at it. You can create a sharing link, favorite it, or save it to your iPad.

If you opted to create a link, it even gives you the option to email the link directly – or you can also just copy it to the clipboard or copy the file (if possible) to the clipboard.

Customize Dropbox App Settings

In the Dropbox settings menu, there aren’t a lot of options, but the few it does have are pretty groovy. You can:

• Change Dropbox accounts
• Assign a password
• Change the upload quality
• Get help
• Send feedback
• Unlink your Dropbox from your iOS device.

Adjusting the Upload Quality will make file syncing faster as it will decrease the size of your images, but it will also make the images smaller and sometimes even pixellated.

Backup A File To Dropbox From Your iPhone

From the My Dropbox menu, if you Click the + button it will let you add photos or videos that you have stored on your iOS device. This feature is extremely useful for backing up videos or pictures you might have taken with your iPhone. Unfortunately the iPad and iPod Touch still have no camera, though.

Save A Dropbox File For Mobile Offline Viewing

Want to store a Dropbox file on your iOS device? Just Mark it as a Favorite after opening it. All favorites are downloaded and stored on your device so you can view it whenever you want, regardless of internet connection.

Unlink Your Device

If you need to quickly sign out of Dropbox and delete all locally stored Favorites, then you need to Unlink it. All you have to do is visit the Settings page and Click Unlink this iPod. You can always reconnect again later!

Conclusion

The Dropbox app is a groovy little tool for syncing files on the go. I find it most useful for backing up pictures and videos taken from my iPhone, but I’m sure you’ll find other uses for it as well!

If having access to your most important files is critical to you, even when you are on the go, Dropbox is your answer. Not only can it sync documents between all your computers whether they be Windows, Mac, or Linux, it also allows you access using your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android phone.

Download and Setup

Download Dropbox from the Android Market or install it by scanning the QR code and the end of the article.

When you open the Dropbox App the first time you’ll be prompted to log into your account, or create an account if your’re a new user.

Existing users can enter your username and password and select Log in.

After you log in you’ll see all of your Dropbox folders and files.

Tap to open any folder and open your folders, files, photos, videos, etc.

Sharing Files

You can very easily share any of your Dropbox documents by email, Twitter, Facebook, or IM using the installed apps on your phone. To share a file, press and hold on the file. When the options appear, select Share.

Next you’ll choose whether to Share a link or Share this file. Here we will share a link.

Next you’ll be prompted to choose your delivery method.

Your recipient will get a link to open and view the file.

If you select Share this file…

You will have the option to send the file via email using one of the installed mail clients.

Uploading Files

You can upload files to Dropbox directly from your Android phone. Select the Menu button on your phone and choose Upload.

You’ll be prompted to select the type of file you want to upload. For our example, we’ll select a video we’ve previously shot and stored on the device.

Selecting picture or video will take you to the gallery to select the media file…

… and you’ll see a notification that your file is uploading.

Now your file is accessible from all your devices that have Dropbox installed.

Create and Save Documents from the the Dropbox App

You can actually create a new document, take a photo, or a video and save it without leaving the app itself. Press the Menu button on your device and select New.

Next you’ll be prompted to select the type of document you’d like to create.

For this example we took a short video. When you’re finished shooting, select OK.

Your document will be immediately uploaded to Dropbox.

Search

Looking for a specific file by can’t seem to locate it? Try Search. Press the Menu button and select Search.

Type in a search term…

And get the results.

Settings

The Dropbox settings (Press Menu and select Settings) will display your current username, the amount of space used in your Dropbox account and the current App version number. You can unlink your device from Dropbox if you no longer with to use it, and even watch a short introductory video about Dropbox.

What Is the iPod Touch?

The iPod touch, sometimes incorrectly called the “iTouch,” is the top-of-the-line iPod. In fact, it’s missing just a few features that make it different from an iPhone. The iPod touch has long been referred to as “an iPhone without the phone,” and that’s basically correct. The hardware and software features of both devices are fairly similar (though the iPod touch isn’t updated as often as the iPhone, so the closest relative to the latest iPod touch is the slightly old iPhone 6 series).

How to Set up and Use the iPod touch

Once you’ve gotten your new iPod touch, you’ll need to set it up. The setup process is pretty easy and quick, and once you’ve completed it, you can get the good stuff, like:

Hardware Features of the iPod touch

• Screen: The 4-inch high-resolution, multi-touch, Retina Display screen is the same as the one used in the iPhone 5 and includes the same features, like zooming in and out by pinching. The 4th generation touch and earlier used a 3.5-inch screen. The Retina Display screen was introduced with the 4th gen. model and is now standard.
• Home button: The button on the bottom center of the face of the iPod touch is used in many functions, including quitting programs and multitasking.
• Hold button: This button on the top right corner of the touch locks the screen and puts the device to sleep.
• Volume control: On the left side of the touch is a button that can be pressed in two directions, one each to raise or lower the volume.
• Wi-Fi: The touch accesses the Internet via Wi-Fi, with all recent models using 802.11b/g standards. The 6th gen. model includes support for both the 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands and adds support for 802.11a/n/ac.
• Camera: The 6th generation touch sports two cameras, a higher resolution unit on the back for photography and a lower-resolution, user-facing camera for FaceTime video chats and selfies.
• Dock Connector: This slot on the bottom of the touch is used to sync content between a computer and the device, and to connect some accessories. The 5th and 6th gen. models use the smaller Lightning connector, while all earlier models used the older, bigger 30-pin version.
• Accelerometer: A sensor that allows the touch to respond to how the device is held and moved. This is most often used in games and gives players more immersive and interesting ways to control onscreen action.

iPod Touch Help

While the iPod touch is a great device, it’s not completely trouble free (and hey, what is?). In your early days of using it, you may run into situations where it freezes. If so, you should be familiar with how to restart it.

When you’re using the touch, there are a number of precautions you should take the protect yourself and your device, including:

• Avoiding hearing loss
• Guarding against theft
• Improving security
• Dealing with a wet iPod touch
• What to do when deleted text messages are still showing up.
