How to use cortana with a local user account in windows 10
- tutorial by Codrut Neagu published on 12.09.2015
Not long ago, Microsoft released the November fall update for Windows 10, which brings many improvements and also several new features. One of the features many users asked for, is the possibility of using Cortana with a local user account, instead of a Microsoft account. Up until now, logging into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account was a mandatory requirement, without which Cortana wouldn’t function at all. Microsoft listened to its users’ feedback and now lets you use Cortana even on local users accounts. In this article, we’ll show how you can have Cortana on your Windows 10 device, while using a traditional, local user account.
What you should know about using Cortana with a local user account in Windows 10
Before we show you all the steps required for enabling Cortana on a local user account in Windows 10, there is one very important thing you should know:
While you can set Cortana to work on a Windows 10 local user account, you will still need the details of a Microsoft account to activa te and use Cortana. You will keep using your local user account in Windows 10 but, for using Cortana, you also need to provide a Microsoft account. This account won’t be used for anything else, except Cortana and there’s no reason to switch your local account to a Microsoft account. If we didn’t manage to explain things clearly enough, be patient and read the full guide. You will understand things better by the end of it.
How to make Cortana work with a local account in Windows 10
The first thing you have to do is login with your local user account. Then, click or tap on Cortana’s search field from the taskbar.
Then, at the bottom of Cortana’s dialog box, she’ll tell you a bit about herself and then ask you if you want to enable her. Click or tap the Next button.
Cortana will let you know that, in order for her to “do her best work” , Microsoft collects and uses information about you and your devices. This is a glimpse into Cortana’s privacy statement and she also provides a link which you can use to open the full Privacy Statement. If you are OK with Microsoft using your information, click or tap Use Cortana to continue with the setup.
After agreeing with its privacy terms, Cortana will ask you to sign in with a Microsoft account. These are her exact words: “Before we get started, I’ll need you to sign in with a Microsoft account”. Sounds strange, right? After all, we want to use Cortana on a local user account, not a Microsoft account. But, as we mentioned in the first section of this tutorial, Cortana still needs a Microsoft account for her to work. This account will be used only by Cortana, to provide you the services she’s been built to provide.
Fortunately, as you will see later on, you will be able to set the Microsoft account to be used only with Cortana, not with any other features or apps from Windows 10. Also, it will not replace your local account in Windows 10.
For now, you will need to press the Sign in button.
Enter the details of your Microsoft account and click or tap on Sign in. If you don’t already have a Microsoft account, you can also choose to Create one straight from this dialog box.
At this step, Microsoft will try to convince you to switch your local Windows 10 user account to a Microsoft account. Don’t jump to conclusions and read carefully: on the bottom of this dialog box, you’ll find a link that says “Sign in to just this app instead”. If you click or tap this link, your Microsoft account will be used only with Cortana, not with anything else. Neither Windows 10, nor any other app or feature, will be able to use your Microsoft account. You will keep using your local user account in Windows 10, just like before.
That’s it! Now Cortana is enabled and working for your local account on your Windows 10 device.
Conclusion
Being able to use Cortana with a local user account in Windows 10 shows that Microsoft is listening to its users’ feedback. And that they are ready to loosen their policies regarding their software products. We’re really glad to see this happen and we think this move will increase the number of people using Cortana on a regular basis. Now that you know how to enable Cortana for your local user account, in Windows 10, try her out and let us know what you think. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Don’t know how, but since I was asked to sign in to Cortana, my admin login wasn’t accepted so I had to use another. The only one available was my husband’s. Now to log into my computer, it comes up with his name and email and I have to use his password to log in. I want my log in details back! Any suggestions?

Do not worry we will help you with this issue.
I would like to inform that when you try to configure the Windows built-in apps on your computer you will have to enter Microsoft account. However, you can use local account to configure Cortana.
As currently you are on Microsoft account, try to log-in to that account, convert Microsoft account to Local account on your computer, configure Cortana and check if it helps.
Step 1: To convert the Microsoft account to local account, you can do the following:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account on Windows 10.
- Click Start and then Settings.
- Click Accounts and Sign in with a local account instead.
- Enter your Microsoft account’s password, and click on Next.
- Type in a Username, Password, and Password Hint that you want to set for your Local account and click Next. Click on Sign out and Finish button.
Step 2: The below are the steps to setup Cortana on local user account in Windows 10
Log-in to your computer using local account.
Click on Search bar in the Taskbar.
Click on Next button.
Click on Use Cortana.
After agreeing with its privacy terms, Cortana will ask you to sign in with a Microsoft account.
Here, you will be able to set the Microsoft account to be used only with Cortana, not with any other features or apps from Windows 10. Also, it will not replace your local account in Windows 10.
Click on Sign in button.
Enter the details of your Microsoft account and click on Sign in.
At this step, click on Sign in to just this app instead
Now Cortana is enabled and working for your local account on your Windows 10 device.
Hope it helps. Get back to us with an updates status of accessing Cortana on local account for further assistance.
HI, Am using a laptop, pure home use only. Laptop never leaves house.
I have not set up Cortana as from past experience. At present when I want into my laptop I do not have any password set so computer opens right up automatically ( that’s how I like and want it).
But if I set up Cortana with email and password will I end up having to sign into my laptop every time I want to use it, that is my fear?

Cortana vám to dá vědět, aby mohla “dělat její nejlepší práci” Microsoft shromažďuje a používá informace o vás a vašich zařízeních.
You can create a local user account (an offline account) for anyone who will frequently use your PC. The best option in most cases, though, is for everyone who uses your PC to have a Microsoft account.
If needed, the local user account can have administrator permissions; however, it’s better to just create a local user account whenever possible.
Caution: A user with an administrator account can access anything on the system, and any malware they encounter can use the administrator permissions to potentially infect or damage any files on the system. Only grant that level of access when absolutely necessary and to people you trust.
As you create an account, remember that choosing a password and keeping it safe are essential steps. Because we don’t know your password, if you forget it or lose it, we can’t recover it for you.
If you’re using Windows 10, version 1803 and later, you can add security questions as you’ll see in step 4 under Create a local user account. With answers to your security questions, you can reset your Windows 10 local account password. Not sure which version you have? You can check your version.
Create a local user account
Select Start > Settings > Accounts and then select Family & other users. (In some versions of Windows you’ll see Other users.)
Select Add someone else to this PC.
Select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, and on the next page, select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
Enter a user name, password, or password hint—or choose security questions—and then select Next.
Change a local user account to an administrator account
Select Start > Settings > Accounts .
Under Family & other users, select the account owner name (you should see “Local Account” below the name), then select Change account type.
Note: If you choose an account that shows an email address or doesn’t say “Local account”, then you’re giving administrator permissions to a Microsoft account, not a local account.
Under Account type, select Administrator, and then select OK.
Sign in with the new administrator account.
Who is Cortana?
Cortana is a personal productivity assistant in Microsoft 365, helping your users achieve more with less effort and focus on what matters. The Cortana app in Windows 10 helps users quickly get information across Microsoft 365, using typed or spoken queries to connect with people, check calendars, set reminders, add tasks, and more.
Where is Cortana available for use in my organization?
Your employees can use Cortana in the languages listed here. However, most productivity skills are currently only enabled for English (United States), for users with mailboxes in the United States.
The Cortana app in Windows 10, version 2004 requires the latest Microsoft Store update to support languages other than English (United States).
Required hardware and software
Cortana requires a PC running Windows 10, version 1703 or later, as well as the following software to successfully run the included scenario in your organization.
A microphone isn’t required to use Cortana.
| Software | Minimum version |
|---|---|
| Client operating system | Desktop: – Windows 10, version 2004 (recommended) |
– Windows 10, version 1703 (legacy version of Cortana)
Mobile: Windows 10 mobile, version 1703 (legacy version of Cortana)
Signing in using Azure AD
Your organization must have an Azure AD tenant and your employees’ devices must all be Azure AD-joined for the best Cortana experience. (Users may also sign into Cortana with a Microsoft account, but will not be able to use their enterprise email or calendar.) For info about what an Azure AD tenant is, how to get your devices joined, and other Azure AD maintenance info, see Azure Active Directory documentation.
How is my data processed by Cortana?
Cortana’s approach to integration with Microsoft 365 has changed with Windows 10, version 2004 and later.
Cortana in Windows 10, version 2004 and later
Cortana enterprise services that can be accessed using Azure AD through Cortana in Windows 10, version 2004 and later, meet the same enterprise-level privacy, security, and compliance promises as reflected in the Online Services Terms (OST). To learn more, see Cortana in Microsoft 365.
How does Microsoft store, retain, process, and use Customer Data in Cortana?
The table below describes the data handling for Cortana enterprise services.
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Storage | Customer Data is stored on Microsoft servers inside the Office 365 cloud. Your data is part of your tenant. Speech audio is not retained. |
| Stays in Geo | Customer Data is stored on Microsoft servers inside the Office 365 cloud in Geo. Your data is part of your tenant. |
| Retention | Customer Data is deleted when the account is closed by the tenant administrator or when a GDPR Data Subject Rights deletion request is made. Speech audio is not retained. |
| Processing and confidentiality | Personnel engaged in the processing of Customer Data and personal data (i) will process such data only on instructions from Customer, and (ii) will be obligated to maintain the confidentiality and security of such data even after their engagement ends. |
| Usage | Microsoft uses Customer Data only to provide the services agreed upon, and for purposes that are compatible with those services. Machine learning to develop and improve models is one of those purposes. Machine learning is done inside the Office 365 cloud consistent with the Online Services Terms. Your data is not used to target advertising. |
How does the wake word (Cortana) work? If I enable it, is Cortana always listening?
The wake word has been re-enabled in the latest version of Cortana in Windows. If you’re on Windows 10, version 2004, be sure that you’ve updated to build 19041.329 or later to use the wake word with Cortana. For earlier builds, you can still click on the microphone button to use your voice with Cortana.
Cortana only begins listening for commands or queries when the wake word is detected, or the microphone button has been selected.
First, the user must enable the wake word from within Cortana settings. Once it has been enabled, a component of Windows called the Windows Multiple Voice Assistant platform will start listening for the wake word. No audio is processed by speech recognition unless two local wake word detectors and a server-side one agree with high confidence that the wake word was heard.
The first decision is made by the Windows Multiple Voice Assistant platform leveraging hardware optionally included in the user’s PC for power savings. If the wake word is detected, Windows will show a microphone icon in the system tray indicating an assistant app is listening.
At that point, the Cortana app will receive the audio, run a second, more accurate wake word detector, and optionally send it to a Microsoft cloud service where a third wake word detector will confirm. If the service does not confirm that the activation was valid, the audio will be discarded and deleted from any further processing or server logs. On the user’s PC, the Cortana app will be silently dismissed, and no query will be shown in conversation history because the query was discarded.
If all three wake word detectors agree, the Cortana canvas will show what speech has been recognized.

Cortana in Windows 10, versions 1909 and earlier, isn’t a service covered by the Office 365 Trust Center. Learn more about how Cortana in Windows 10, version 1909 and earlier, treats your data.

Windows 10’s setup process now forces you to sign in with a Microsoft account. If you’d rather use a local user account, Microsoft says you should switch from Microsoft to a local user account afterward. Here’s how.
What You Need to Know
There is a way to set up Windows 10 without using a Microsoft account. If you disconnect your system from the internet, you’ll be able to sign in with a local user account. This works whether you’re going through the setup process on a new PC or installing Windows 10 from scratch.
But, if you’ve already set up. Windows 10 and created or used an existing Microsoft account, this won’t be much help.
This process will keep all your installed files and programs. You won’t lose anything. However, Windows 10 will no longer synchronize your settings between your PCs and use other Microsoft account-linked features. You can still sign into some individual apps with a Microsoft account without signing into your PC with that Microsoft account.
We’re not saying everyone needs to use a local account. The choice is up to you! We’re providing these instructions because Microsoft is making using a local account much more confusing.
Switch to a Local Account From a Microsoft Account
You’ll do this from Windows 10’s settings app. To open it, click the Start button and click the “Settings” gear icon on the left or press Windows+i (that’s a lower-case “i”).
Click the “Accounts” icon in the Settings window.
Click “Sign in with a local account instead.” This option is on the “Your info” tab, which will be selected by default. Your Microsoft account details are displayed here.
Windows 10 will ask if you’re sure you want to continue, warning you that you’ll lose Microsoft account features like the ability to synchronize your Windows 10 settings between your PCs. To continue, click “Next.”
When Windows 10 asks, enter your PIN or password to verify your identity.
You’ll be prompted to enter a username, password, and password hint for your local user account. The hint will be shown when someone tries to sign in with an incorrect password.
Enter the details you want to use and click “Next.”
You’re almost done. Click “Sign out and finish.” The next time you sign in, you’ll have to provide your new password.
If you want to use a Microsoft account in the future, return to the Settings > Accounts > Your Info screen. You’ll be able to link your local account to a Microsoft account by providing a Microsoft account’s username and password.
