How to use a digital camera as a webcam

By Christopher Ramos
A Few Digital and Physical Security Tips for iPads

Most popular SLRs and mirrorless cameras these days offer USB webcam support that is possible with just some extra software. If you have ever wondered to use your camera as your webcam for your computer or laptop to get better video quality and not be able to, it might be because some of the cameras don’t support the feature as of now. But, at the same time, most of them have USB ports which with software would be enough to take a digital video signal and feed it to various meeting software. On a Windows platform, you have a lot of options that you can download for Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, or Sony cameras and use them as a webcam. For Mac, there are only limited options, like Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic till now.

No matter what camera you have, this article will help you get through.

Canon EOS Webcam Utility Beta

The Canon EOS Webcam Utility Beta is available for both macOS and Windows systems. It works for select SLR, mirrorless, and fixed-lens cameras. It does not offer any technical support due to its beta versions. It is supported on 64-bit Windows 10 and macOS running High Sierra, Mojave, or Catalina to use it. However, the feature is limited to recent models and there are also low-cost price options available. Again the support is restricted around G series PowerShots and interchangeable lens models.

You have to get the software running and then everything is set. You have to plug in your camera via USB and select the source for your video app.

Fujifilm X Webcam Software

Fujifilm webcam utility is a cross-platform software that supports all the same as the Canon EOS Webcam Utility Beta. It works with higher-end Fujifilm cameras such as X and GFX system cameras. There are also two recent models that work as USB webcams without the need for additional software.

Nikon Webcam Utility Beta

Unlike the other two, Nikon’s software is currently supported only on Windows. It is available free for Windows10 PCs running on 64-bit versions. Also, camera support is limited to the latest launches only.

Olympus OM-D Webcam Beta

This software is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of WIndows10 and also for Macs running Sierra through Catalina. This software works above entry-level and for a very few models such as OM-D E-M1, OM-D E-M1 Mark II, OM-D E-M1 Mark III, OM-D E-M1X, and the OM-D E-M5 Mark II.

However, this is an efficient software as you just have to plug in the USB and get going.

Panasonic Lumix Tether for Streaming

The Panasonic Lumix Tether for Streaming software is a cross-platform software supported on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 systems, and Macs running operating systems as old as El Capitan (10.11) through the latest Catalina release. Camera support here is also limited to high-end models.

Sony Imaging Edge Webcam

Imaging Edge Webcam by Sony is supported on 64-bit Windows 10 systems. It works with a wide range of fixed-lens and interchangeable lens camera models. For models such as a9 II, a7R IV, or ZV-1, you will have to work around the network settings a bit. Also, you have to tweak somethings more for some other models. After installing the software, Sony’s documentation will help you get ahead.

The Mac Hack (Camera Live + CamTwist)

Most software for cameras isn’t supported on Mac but there are workarounds and hacks to get this working. If you are someone who can use the terminal, you can type is few commands to expose your computer to a wide array of enthusiasts and professional cameras. You can work it around the Zoom app.

The commands go as:

xcode-select –install (This loads Apple’s Xcode development toolkit onto your Mac)

sudo codesign –remove-signature /Applications/ (To remove the signature from the Zoom application.)

Since this a hack, it is not fully recommended and should be tried at your own risks. Anyway, if you are moving ahead you will need more apps like Camra Live and CamTwist.

Camera Live will show you a list of connected devices to find your camera from. Next, when you open CamTwist, select Syphon as your video source in the first column. Further, go to Camera Live server from the drop-down on the far right portion of the screen. Once you get this running, You will have the option to choose the CamTwist app as a video source in Zoom, Google Hangouts, Google Meet, and other video chatting services. And all of this you can do using Google Chrome only as Safari lets you use only its default camera.

This might not be a walk in the garden, you will have to try things from here and there to make this work completely.

Along with all the software options you also have a few hardware options to try. You have to simply see if you can output a video signal via HDMI. You can check this by plugging your camera to your TV and watch for a picture. And most importantly, you will be able yo turn off distracting user interface elements from the video signal which you can do with interchangeable lens models. There are certain products such as Elgato Cam Link 4K and the BlackMagic ATEM Mini that can be used with HDMI. You can connect them to your PC or Mac via USB, then plug your camera in via HDMI, and there you will have your webcam.

Apart from all of this, if you already have a good camera, you are good to go and you find them to be better investments than just having a high definition webcam.

Even today, it is difficult to find good quality webcams, especially if you want to stream at 1080p . Fortunately, if you have a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera there are ways to use them as a webcam on your PC, and in this article we are going to show you how.

The ability to use your digital camera as a webcam is highly dependent on the camera you have. Some compact point-and-shoot cameras come with their own software and drivers that will allow you to use them as webcams, but this is unfortunately not a common feature. Fortunately, new third-party software has emerged that allows many models of Nikon and Canon SLR cameras to be used for this purpose, although as you may have guessed this software is not free.

Using your digital camera as a webcam, what do you need to do it?

Modern mirrorless and DSLR cameras that are capable of outputting the image directly via HDMI in a clean way (that is, without overlapping on the screen) will give you the best results. You will need additional hardware to do it. Let’s see what it takes.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

If you intend to use your digital camera as a webcam, you will need at least a tripod to keep it fixed in the location you want. You will also need some way to power the camera since only with its battery you could have autonomy problems.

In any case, you will also need a USB or HDMI cable (depending on the connector of your camera, it could also be microUSB, mini HDMI, etc.) as well as a capturer , which can be hardware or software. Of course, you shouldn’t forget about a microphone if you want the audio to be picked up as well. Let’s see it.

Method 1: use your camera software

The first thing to verify is that your digital camera is compatible with the clean HDMI output that we have mentioned before through the software of the same. The best way to do this is to consult the manual and any included software, although you can also find software downloads for the specific camera model you have on the manufacturer’s website.

For example, Canon offers the “EOS Webcam Utility” software that allows the brand’s cameras with interchangeable lenses (EOS ILC) and PowerShot compact cameras to be used as a webcam natively on Windows 10 64-bit operating systems.

Once you have downloaded and installed the necessary software and drivers, your PC should already detect the camera as just another imaging device. This means that programs like Open Broadcaster Software or XSplit Broadcaster will detect it as if it were a webcam and you can use it as such.

Method 2: use third-party software

If your camera is compatible but does not have its own software or does not work as it should, you can use a third party application to turn your DSLR or compact mirrorless camera into a webcam. For example, you have Sparkocam that works with a large number of Nikon and Canon cameras, although as we have mentioned before it is a paid application.

Despite what this software promises, you should be aware that many users complain about its performance. Some report too much latency in recordings, and others say they are unable to remove the watermark from the software. There are separate versions of this application for Canon and Nikon, one that supports both and one that focuses on the other functions (editing). A single user license for the system of your choice costs $ 50, $ 70 if you want to use the version compatible with both brands.

It is difficult to recommend this software, really, but for some people it is the only alternative if they want to use their digital camera as a webcam since there are not many other options available.

Method 3: your digital camera as a webcam with an adapter

In any case, if you want to use your digital camera as a webcam on a recurring basis and obtain good results, the best way is to purchase a capture device and / or an adapter to capture the camera’s HDMI output. This technique uses the raw, uncompressed camera video stream and converts it to a USB webcam stream. The quality is unbeatable, but you will need to invest some money in hardware.

Of course you must make sure as we indicated at the beginning that your camera is compatible with the video output through HDMI, and you will need an adapter for the corresponding connector of your camera. Then you will need a capture device such as Elgato’s Cam Link 4K or a capturer that supports HDMI input (almost all do). As long as your camera has an HDMI or mini HDMI output, you are already halfway there, but before you start buying a capturer, first check that it is on the list of compatible devices.

Elgato is not the only company that produces HDMI to USB capture devices, and in fact you can find much cheaper alternatives in stores like Amazon, although they lack the support and quality of this that we are recommending.

If you can afford the investment, without a doubt this is the way that will give you the least complications and the best results.

“Can you tell me if it’s possible to use my old canon EOS rebel xs dslr as a webcam?”

Thanks for asking about using your Canon Rebel XS as a webcam. It’s a popular question. The Canon Geek website has received more questions on the topic of using existing Canon digital cameras as webcams that any other question.

The Canon Rebel XS doesn’t the ability to record video

The Rebel XS was a capable digital camera at the time of its release in 1993, but is essentially a dinosaur at this point in digital camera features and abilities.

I don’t know of anyone who has successfully pulled this off. Using regular digital cameras as webcams searches have a lot of high demand, but no supply for older Canons that I know of. Sounds like an opportunity for someone to figure out.Canon does make software for that works with many of its camera models, but the Rebel XS is not one of them: Canon Webcam Software.

(Use As a Webcam ?)

“How do I turn my Powershot G16 into a webcam ?”

Thanks for asking about turning your Canon G16 into a webcam. That question is coming across my desk more than any other question about Canon cameras.

How to turn a Powershot camera into a webcam.

Canon makes a specific utility to enable users to use their cameras as webcams. The large majority of the Canon cameras listed on the Canon website that can be used as webcams are EOS cameras.

The only “G” series cameras listed are the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III. The Canon G16 camera is a fine camera, but it came out in 2013. That’s long before the Covid-19 pandemic permeated our society and spurred on the use of social distancing through video chatting like Zoom, Skype, and others. I’m guessing that Canon and other camera makers will be incorporating the webcam feature in most new digital cameras and will do so going forward

Here is the link to the Canon software that enables using cameras as webcams: Canon Webcam Utility

Canon G16 Video Specs

The Powershot G16 is a very capable camera that can produce solid quality video. It’s 12 MP 4000 Г— 3000 1/1.7″ CMOS sensor can shoot HD (1920 x 1080) video at 60 or 30 fps. Although they’re lower resolution the G16 also has a couple of fun Super Slow Motion movie modes with two recording speeds, 640 x 480 at 120fps and 320 x 240 at 240fps.

You can try one of the Canon utilities to enable your Canon G16 to double as a webcam. You might also simply call Canon directly and get hold of one of the technicians who is knowledgeable specifically with this issue. The USA Canon phone number is (800) 652-2666. Please let us know how you make out with this. There are many other Canon Geek readers who would appreciate it.

This past year has seen pretty much every major camera manufacturer release software that allows for a set of cameras to work as a webcam for your computer. But what if your camera isn’t supported? Luckily, there is a cheap, easy solution to that.

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic have all released software for PC and Mac computers that enables select cameras to be used as webcams with popular video conferencing services. But not all companies have added support for all cameras, and in some cases, some conferencing services aren’t supported.

There is a relatively inexpensive solution to all this though: an HDMI capture card.

While some might think this is an obvious solution, there are many who might not know what a capture card is, how they work, or that they were even an option.

Plugging your camera directly into your computer without custom software won’t work. To use your camera as a webcam through your computer without that custom software requires a dongle that is capable of capturing a video signal from an external device via its HDMI connection. Prior to 2020 and the explosion of video conference calling needs, capture cards were most commonly used with video game consoles as a method of recording content either for YouTube or live streaming to Twitch.

Earlier this year, capture cards were extremely difficult to find in stock because of the sudden growth in demand thanks to COVID-19, and many of the ones that were available ran anywhere between $80 and hundreds of dollars. Some of the more expensive ones had additional features, but for simple webcam use, only a basic one is required. Stock on various capture cards is relatively stable and there are several options on Amazon. The very affordable $13 solution presented in the video above is no longer available at the time of publication, but similar options can still be had for as little as $16.

If you don’t feel like fiddling with a camera manufacturer’s software, picking up a capture card is a cheap and easy way to use pretty much any digital camera with an HDMI out port as a webcam with your computer.

If you don’t have a laptop with a built-in webcam or an external webcam or simply want to make the most of your digital camera capabilities (like aperture adjusting for blurring your background), there is a way to adapt your digital camera as a webcam.

Some digital cameras have ability to be used as webcams and are shipped with necessary webcam software, but most camera vendors don’t provide such software.

In this tutorial you will learn how to use Canon DSLR or Nikon DSLR camera as a regular webcam with the help of SparkoCam. SparkoCam is the software that allows you to turn your Canon or Nikon camera into a standard webcam for video chats, conferencing, recordings, etc.

Download and install SparkoCam

Download installation package and run SparkoCamInstaller.exe.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Follow all installation steps carefully until the setup is complete.

Connect camera to PC using USB cable

First thing you need to do is to plug-in your camera’s USB cable into computer.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Turn camera on

Once camera gets recognized by Windows you may see a notification in a system tray or a popup window about newly available device like the one below.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

If you don’t see such window – don’t worry, it isn’t mandatory, so just follow next steps.

Also, if you installed software that comes on a CD that is shipped with the camera, you may get EOS Utility started up. SparkoCam doesn’t require EOS Utility to function properly, so just close it and go to next steps.

Launch SparkoCam

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Go to Device tab and select Canon Camera checkbox to transform your Canon camera into webcam or Nikon Camera in case you have a Nikon DSLR camera.

If you have only one camera connected to the PC, SparkoCam will automatically pick it up, otherwise select required camera from the Camera list.

Choose SparkoCam Virtual Webcam as a source web camera in your chat application

At this step you need to configure your target application to use SparkoCam as a video source.

For example, to configure Skype you need to open Options dialog and select SparkoCam Virtual Webcam in Select webcam list.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Please note that Canon and Nikon cameras don’t provide functionality for using their microphones for audio capturing, so it won’t be possible to use camera’s built-in microphone for sound, thus you need an external microphone to enable voice.

New software from Sony lets you turn your digital camera into a high-quality webcam for video chats and livestreaming.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Turn your Sony digital camera into a webcam with this new, free software.

If you’re still working and socializing from home due to coronavirus spikes across the country, it may be time to upgrade your webcam to make sure you look your best on video chats and livestreams ( changing your Zoom background and turning on the beauty filter can only do so much).

If you have a Sony digital camera, there’s now a free desktop application that will turn it into a high-quality webcam, so you can video chat or live stream while taking advantage of your camera’s features, like autofocus and high-resolution picture quality. (If you don’t have a Sony camera, you can also turn your GoPro into a webcam , or turn your phone camera into a webcam .)

Get more out of your tech

Here’s how to download Sony’s new Imaging Edge Webcam software, to turn your digital camera into a webcam.

Which Sony cameras will work with the new webcam software?

You’ll need one of 35 models of Sony digital camera that are compatible with the Imaging Edge Webcam software. These include a number of the Alpha and RX models. Find the full list of compatible cameras on the page where you can download the software.

You’ll also need a PC running Windows 10 ($146 at Amazon) to download the software. (If you haven’t upgraded yet, you can still download Windows 10 for free following these steps.) Make sure your operating system and drivers have been updated to the latest versions.

Finally, you’ll need a USB cord (there’s one that comes with the camera that will work) to plug the camera into your computer once the software is installed.

The software will work with 35 different Sony digital camera models.

How to turn your Sony camera into a webcam

1. Download the software

Download the Imaging Edge Webcam software to your Windows 10 PC from Sony’s website (you should always check privacy policies before downloading software). Select your camera model (you can choose more than one), and click the download button.

2. Change your camera settings

This step depends on which Sony camera model you have. Generally, you’re looking to go to Menu > Network, and turn off the option to control with a smartphone, and turn on the option for PC remote. Find specific instructions for your camera model on Sony’s support site.

3. Connect the camera and computer using your USB cable

Plug your camera into your computer using your USB cable. Then set your camera to Auto mode.

4. Launch your video chat or livestream service on your computer

On your computer, pull up Zoom , Microsoft Teams , Google Meet or whatever other video chat or live streaming software you’re using. After doing this, change your camera from Auto mode to Movie mode.

5. Change your settings

In whatever service you’re using to video chat or livestream, go into the settings to change the camera from your computer’s built-in camera to the Sony camera. You’ll have to check how to do this for each individual service, as they may be different.

Then, change your camera settings. The aspect ratio will remain set to 16:9 using the software. (Note that the webcam does not include audio, so you’ll have to use your computer’s built-in microphone, or an external microphone.) You’re done! Enjoy using your new webcam.

There are lots of other ways to repurpose the equipment you already have, like your old phone and old laptop . Once you get your setup going, you can also check out the online classes and equipment you need to become a YouTuber , or just pick up the best gear for online meetings .

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Whether you want a professional look for your livestreams or simply to look better during your next video chat, one of the best options is to use a dedicated camera with excellent video specs—such as your Olympus Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. Now that Olympus has launched the OM-D Webcam Beta you can get these advantages without much effort. A few key accessories can help make it even better, but the benefit is well worth it.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

Why Use an Olympus Camera Instead of a Webcam?

It is all about quality. Olympus cameras have significantly better video capabilities than your conventional webcam. That, and the ability to control things like exposure and aperture, will add some reliability to your streaming setup. Also, being able to place the camera elsewhere in your room or on your desk can help you work with more flattering angles or your better lenses.

Recommended Cameras and Equipment

To accomplish the goal of using an Olympus camera as a webcam you will need to download the OM-D Webcam Utility to a Windows computer and then have a compatible camera connected via USB. Or, if you want even higher quality, you will need one key feature: clean HDMI output. What this does is output the highest-quality video, with no overlays, via HDMI. This signal can then be read by a capture device for use in streaming or as a webcam. Here are the current cameras that offer this capability:

The camera is just the first step, and hopefully you already have that at the ready. You will need a couple other things to complete the circuit:

  • HDMI cable (microHDMI to full-size HDMI)
  • Video capture device
  • External power supply
  • Optional: external microphone

Choosing an HDMI cable should be straightforward—get one that is long enough but not too long. A little extra slack isn’t the worst thing, either. As for the video capture device, that will depend on your needs. There are multiple types, with an array of features and an even wider array of price points. The simplest options connect over USB and come at a reasonable cost.

How to use a digital camera as a webcam

The final step we would recommend is an external power solution. The worst-case scenario is that your camera cuts out halfway through a stream or call. Battery life for the BLH-1 Pack is about 100 minutes for streaming, so short calls should be no problem. For added safety or multiple calls, you would use an AC adapter or maybe find a dummy battery system with a third-party AC solution or larger battery source. For the E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III, or E-M5 Mark III, you can plug into the camera’s USB port for charging in between streaming sessions.

One thing to think about during setup is what lens to use. Luckily, Olympus has published a list of recommended lenses:

In summary, you’ll want a lens that is able to give a wide-angle perspective and has a reasonably fast maximum aperture. Though, honestly, any lens you have will likely work with proper camera positioning. Just set it wide open if you want shallow depth of field.

How to Set up Your Camera and Computer

Once you have all the necessary pieces to get started, you can begin to get your computer and cameras set up. Depending on your chosen capture device, you might have to install a driver or software package to get it up and running. That should be your first step. Once that is accomplished, and you have a charged camera, you are ready to set things up.

For the camera’s settings:

  • Go into the menu and for the HDMI output, also known as Output Mode, and set it to “Record Mode.”
  • Place the camera into Video Mode.
  • The recommendation is to use Full HD resolution at 60p. This provides a clean image and matches up with the point at which many streaming systems max out.
  • Secondly, you’ll want to use Manual or Aperture Priority for the best control. This is so you can select an open aperture for shallow depth of field.
  • Make sure to choose a standard color profile; flat looks will not translate well to your stream.

After you have the camera configured, you’ll want to plug everything in. You’ll need to follow the instructions of your capture device, but eventually you should be able to select that device as your camera input.
