How to upload your music library to google play music

(Pocket-lint) – Google has announced that its streaming music service, called Google Play Music, is now free to use, meaning you won’t need a subscription in order to listen. But you will be subjected to adverts.

Just like how the free versions of Spotify and Pandora serve up adverts, Google’s new version of Google Play Music will begin playing adverts instead of requiring the $9.99-a-month free from all users. That said, if you still want to pay the fee in order to skip the adverts, you are free to do so.

We’ve combed through all the details and explained everything below, with the purpose of helping you figure out if Google Play Music is now worth using over rival streaming services.

What is Google Play Music?

Google Play Music is a music streaming service, in which users could also purchase and store individual tracks.

It even stores music. For instance, prior to today’s update, users with standard accounts could upload and listen to 50,000 songs at no cost, while an “All Access” subscription, which costs $9.99 a month, allowed on-demand streaming of any song in Google’s catalogue as well as the ability to create custom radio stations.

The Google Play Music app also allows music to be stored and listened to offline.

What does the free version of Google Play Music include?

The free, ad-supported tier introduces curated playlists. Google first launched these types of hand-picked stations for Play Music’s paying subscribers after it acquired Songza, but now anyone can access them (but that also means you’ll never be able to control which song is playing, and in between tracks, you’ll hear adverts).

The free tier lacks key features that premium subscribers get after paying up. Free users are limited to six skips per hour. They can also pause tracks, but they can’t rewind or fast forward or even see what’s next. Also, if you pay for Google Play Music, you can create, edit, rename, and save playlists offline playback. Free listeners can’t do that.

Free-tier users get one major bonus, though: they can listen to streams at up to 320kbps. So that’s cool.

When will Google Play Music begin pushing adverts?

Google launched the free, advert-supported version of Google Play Music for US users on 23 June. The web version is available now, and a similar update will roll out to Google Play Music’s Android and iOS app later this week. It’s not yet clear when or if the free tier will expand globally.

Google has quietly launched its Play Music Unlimited service in India, which lets you stream tunes on demand and also enjoy radio stations based on artists and songs you like.

The service, which is identical to the All Access offering that costs $9.99 a month in the US, is priced at Rs. 89 ($1.4) per month in India. That’s cheaper than Apple Music’s Rs. 120 ($1.85) asking price, as well as local ones like Gaana and Saavn, which start at Rs. 99 ($1.5); however, it’s worth noting that the difference in cost is minimal and will likely not greatly influence subscribers’ decision on which one to go with. The Economic Times notes that after 45 days, Play Music’s subscription fee will go up to Rs. 99 ($1.5).

Play Music Unlimited offers Google’s entire international library as well as music in a wide range of Indian languages on the Web and in its mobile apps. This builds upon the music store that Google launched last September, which allowed users to buy and download songs and albums for offline playback.

Google’s offering takes advantage of machine learning and location + activity data to surface music that it thinks you’ll enjoy based on what you’re up to: driving to work, heading to the gym or getting ready to ease into the day.

It also offers free cloud storage so you can upload 50,000 of your own tracks and stream them just like you would any other track in its library. That’s handy if you have a collection of tunes from indie artists who aren’t yet on Google’s platform.

However, there are a couple of limitations. Play Music doesn’t have a podcast section like the one available to users in the US and Canada since last April; I managed to find episodes of This American Life, but they were listed as tracks by an eponymous artist.

Plus, all the intelligent mixes that the app served up only included Indian music, and even setting my language preference to ‘Western’ didn’t affect the mixes that surfaced. Sorry Google, but I’m not looking to fire up Bhojpuri driving music during my commute. Hopefully that will be addressed in a future update.

With that, Google is set to take India’s growing streaming music market by storm. The time is ripe, given that India is expected to have 273 million people subscribe to streaming music services by 2020. Amazon is slated to bring its Prime Music service to the country sometime next year, but there’s a chance that it might be a bit too late to grab a sizeable piece of the pie by then.

Google Play Music offers an unlimited music streaming subscription paired with YouTube Red, but it’s more than that. Even if the music you want to listen to isn’t available in Google’s streaming library, you can add it to your own personal Google Play Music library and listen from any device.

Better yet, this works even if you aren’t paying for Google Play Music at all. It’s a free feature that allows you to access your music collection from anywhere.

If you’re considering buying an album that isn’t available for streaming in Google Play Music All Access, you may want to consider buying it on the Google Play Music Store. When you buy albums or songs on the Google Play Store, that music will be immediately added to your Google Play Music account as well as being available for download.

But you may want to buy music from other stores like Amazon, rip it from your own discs, or just download music that isn’t available in Google Play Music and get it in your library. You have two options for doing so.

Songs you try to upload will be “matched” if possible. This means Google will give you Google’s own copy, potentially getting you a higher quality version of the song than the one you uploaded. If Google doesn’t have its own version of a song on file, it will just upload and store the song file you provide.

Option One: Upload Songs With Google Chrome

You can upload music right from your web browser, assuming that web browser is Google Chrome. This is ideal if you’re just uploading a few songs (rather than an entire library). On the Google Play Music website, click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and click “Upload Music”.

Drag and drop individual song files or folders containing song files from your computer’s local drive to this window. You can also click the “Select From Your Computer” button and browse to the individual song files. The music you upload will appear in your music library.

If you use iTunes, you can drag and drop music right from your iTunes library onto the page.

Option Two: Automatically Upload New Music With Music Manager

Google also offers a downloadable “Google Play Music Manager” application for Windows and macOS, ideal for those with large libraries that they want constantly syncing to Google Music. You’ll also be prompted to use it if you click the “Upload Music” option in a browser that isn’t Chrome.

The Google Play Music Manager tool is particularly convenient because it runs in the background on your PC, monitoring your music folder. When you add more music to your music folder—by downloading, ripping, or purchasing it—Google Play Music Manager will automatically upload it to your Google Play Music account. It’ll be available in the Google Play Music app and website on all your devices.

Download and install the application. You’ll be asked what you want to do—select “Upload songs to Google Play”. This application also allows you to download copies of music you’ve uploaded or purchased.

Select the location where your music is stored on your PC. If you have it stored in your iTunes or Windows Media Player library, select that option. If it’s stored in your My Music folder at C:\Users\Name\Music, select that option. If it’s anywhere else, select the “Other Folders” option and add the folders containing music files.

The Music Manager application will offer to monitor the locations you selected for new music. Click “Yes” and the application will run in your notification area, automatically monitoring and uploading music files you add to the selected location on your PC.

To monitor the upload process and adjust which folders the tool is watching, click the Google Play Music Manager icon in your system tray.

Finding and Managing Your Uploaded Songs

To see only the songs you’ve uploaded, click your “Library” in Google Play Music and select “Purchased & Uploaded” from the dropdown menu.

If a song you uploaded doesn’t have any tag information associated with it, you can add it yourself. Right-click the song in Google Play Music, select “Edit Info”, and enter the artist, song title, album name, and whatever other information you want associated with the song. You can even add album art from here.

You can upload up to 50,000 songs of your own. To check how many you’ve uploaded, click the menu in Google Play Music and select “Settings”. Under Account, look at the “Uploaded Songs” counter.

Songs you’ve added to Google Play Music can be played, added to playlists, and downloaded for offline playback in the mobile app like any other songs in Google Play Music.

How to Upload Music to Google Play Music in 7 Easy Steps

Once you have your song completed and the artwork, it’s time to upload your music onto Google Play Music. Let’s dive into the process.

Step 1. Sign up for a distributor

After testing more than 10 different music distributors, such as The Orchard, Tunecore, Routenote, and many others, I have concluded that Routenote is one of my favorite experiences while uploading music to Google Play Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube, and many more.

Once you have clicked to Sign up, Routenote gives you the option to conveniently sign up to its service with Google, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, or just your email address. When signing up, please just remember to use this string of numbers in the Referral Code: 2f76a771.

Step 2. Schedule your release to Google Play Music

Now that you have signed up for Routenote, hover over the Distribution tab and click “Create New Release.” Once you have landed on this page, enter in the name of your release into the field “Release Title*:”. This will be the name of your EP or album, or the name of your song if you’re only scheduling a single song for release at the moment. If you do not have a UPC or EAN at the time of uploading the track, don’t worry, Routenote will create one for you.

Step 3. Add your Song or Album Details to the ‘Album Details’ screen

Once you click on Album Details, be sure to add the Album/Single/EP Title, if you have a specific album version (not required), whether it is a Compilation Album, the Primary Artist Name(s), what the Primary Genre of the album/song is, who holds the Composition Copyright, Sound Recording Copyright, name of the Record Label (or self-released), the Sales Start Date which should be the same date as Originally Released, when the Pre Order Date should be, and if the song contains any Explicit Content. Take a look at our screenshots below to ensure you set up your Album Details correctly.

Step 4. Upload your audio file(s)

On this step, you’ll be able to upload all of your tracks on the album/EP/single that you wish to release. Once you have added the Track Name and click “Choose File” to select the song to upload, you have the option to click “Add Track” which will give you the option to add other songs in your album/EP. Since we are giving the example of how to upload a single on Google Play Music, we are only going to use the first field. Be sure that you are only uploading a high-quality 320kbps – 44.1khz MP3 here. Once you have added all of your tracks, click continue.

The next screen will show you the Audio Metadata of the song. We have nothing to change on this release, so we’re going to just click ‘Save and Continue.’

Step 5. Upload the song or album artwork

It’s probably best to have your song artwork ready to go once you get to this stage. If you haven’t thought about your artwork yet, head over to Canva.com to create your 3000px x 3000px song artwork. I highly recommend getting pictures from Unsplash.com and using those photos in your song or album artwork. Be sure to not include your Website URL, contact information, any hashtags, pornographic imagery, pricing information, copyrighted images, a scan of a CD, or any blurry or pixelated images in your song artwork in order to be accepted for your release on Google Play Music. Once you have uploaded your image, click ‘Save and Continue.’

Step 6. Choose which stores to distribute your music to

This step is one of my favorite steps when uploading any music through Routenote and you’ll see why soon enough. On this screen, Routenote shows you all of the different stores they have on their platform. You can select all stores on the top right, or you can choose from DSPs such as iTunes & Apple Music, Amazon, Google Play Music, Spotify, Anghami, Deezer, Tidal, Juke, Shazam, Pandora, Napster, 7Digital, Facebook, Naver/Vibe, Netease, Tencent, AWA, and YouTube. If you wish to not distribute throughout the world, be sure to select this option at this time. Once you have filled out and selected all of the proper channels, click ‘Save and Continue.’

Step 7. Choose which distribution model to use

Routenote is one of the few distribution platforms that allow for Free Distribution to Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. You can opt for the Free distribution model where Artists will keep 85% of the total royalties, or you can opt for the Premium Distribution model where Artists keep 100% of the royalties and pay just $10 for Singles, $20 for EPs, $30 for Albums, $45 for Extended Albums, and then just $9.99 annually. The best part about Routenote is you have the ability to switch distribution models at any time. So if you notice that a song is going viral, you can change your distribution model from Free Distribution to Premium Distribution so that you can collect 100% of the total royalties.

Be sure to add your PayPal information on Routenote so that Routenote can properly pay you 3 months from the month of your streams.

Google Play Music has finally reached its end, and YouTube Music is ready for its time in the sun. The Play Music app has been removed from the Google Play Store and from web browsers. Unfortunately, those of you who have procrastinated to this point will no longer be able to transfer your content from Google Play Music to YouTube Music.

The old service is officially gone now, ending in late February 2021. For a quick reminder, here’s how the steps would have worked if you could still move your library:

How to transfer Google Play Music content to YouTube Music

Google claims it only takes one press of a button in the YouTube Music app to transfer content over to the newer service. Here’s how to do it:

1. If you have not already done so, go ahead and download the YouTube Music app from the Google Play Store.
2. Open the YouTube Music app on your Android device. You should see a “Transfer your Play Music library” option. Press the “Let’s Go” button to continue.
3. You should then see the “Transfer your latest Google Play Music additions” selection, along with “Not Now” and “Transfer” options at the bottom of the screen. Press the “Transfer” button to start the process.

That’s how to move Google Play Music content to YouTube Music. If you haven’t done so already, then your library is probably gone. Google gave February 24 as its final day to move your Play Music content. On the chance that you didn’t move your library over, there’s no known way to recover it.

Download from PC and Mac (recommended)

Downloading music to your PC is the best, easiest, and fastest method to do. There are actually three methods, the slow, painful method, the faster, better method, and the manual method. All three still work as of the time of this writing, although that may change as the service comes closer and closer to retirement.

The slow, painful method

• Click here to go to the Google Play Music Manager page. Download and install the app as you would any other app.
• Open the app and click on the Download tab along the top of the window.
• Select the option to download your library. We recommend the option with the biggest number (usually Download my library) because it contains every song you purchased or uploaded.
• It will ask you about a download location. You can choose iTunes, your computer’s music folder, or a folder of your choosing. We recommend a folder of your choosing so you can sort your music later. Click the Start download button to begin.
• Start watching the entire extended editions of the Lord of the Rings movies because the download is going to be very slow.
• Note: This method doesn’t actually stop. If you stop it and resume, it will start over about half of the time, re-downloading songs you already downloaded.

Jokes aside, this is actually not a terrible method if you don’t have a lot of music, but quickly gets worse and worse the larger your collection is. This is the only method that doesn’t require a specific browser and the only time we’d recommend it is if you can’t or won’t download and use Google Chrome.

The faster, better method (recommended for everyone)

• Note: This method requires you to use Google Chrome browser. It works on the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge if you enable the ability to install Chrome extensions.
• Open the Google Play Music web player by clicking here.
• Click the 3-line menu in the top left corner of the window. Select the Settings option.
• Scroll down until you find the Music from this computer section. Tap the Add Your Music button and follow the instructions. We recommend pointing it at a folder with no music since you’re here to download your music, not add more.
• Note: You also need to download a Google Play Music extension for the proper sections to show up if you haven’t already installed it.
• After that, two new sections should appear in the Settings. The first is Download folder. Configure that to the folder where you want your downloaded music to go. The second is Download your library. Click that to download your library.
• In the bottom left corner, an orange arrow icon will appear, tap that to view the progress of the download in your browser.

This method downloads music vastly faster than the previous method by a large margin and it’s also fairly easy to do. Plus, you don’t have to download and install a horrible app to do the work as it all takes place in the browser. Use this one, trust us.

The manual method

• Note: This method requires you to use Google Chrome browser. It works on the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge if you enable the ability to install Chrome extensions.
• Open the Google Play Music web player by clicking here.
• Navigate to any song or album you own in Google Play Music. It can music you’ve purchased or music you’ve uploaded.
• Tap the 3-dot menu button on the album or the individual songs and select the Download option.
• An orange and white arrow icon will appear in the bottom left corner of the window. Click that to view download progress.

This is actually just a manual, more granular version of the faster, better method. You can simply select the songs you want. However, unless your download messed up and you need to grab a specific album or song that the other download methods missed, you shouldn’t need this one at all.

Download from iOS and Android

Unfortunately, the official Google Play Music app doesn’t have a method to download your library to your mobile devices at this time. We looked in the app settings on both platforms and there are no options to download your library. You can only set playlists to download for offline listening and unfortunately that’s not the same thing as downloading your own collection for backup purposes.

We attempted a few methods to bypass this, including using a browser in desktop mode and trying to trick Google Play Music into letting us download something. We figured out how to get all the way to the Download album option (using Firefox), but we never got the site to actually send us any files because we could not install the proper extension. If this changes, we’ll let you know, but for the time being, it’s not possible to download your music for the purposes of backing up your library to your phone.

Download from Chrome OS

You can actually download your library with Chrome OS and it’s the same process as with Windows and Mac. Since Chrome OS comes with Chrome Browser by default, we highly recommend the quicker, better method or the manual method described above.
