There’s an open standard for calendars called the iCalendar specification that lets programs like the Calendar app on macOS subscribe to online calendars and auto-update. Most calendar apps will support this format, including Google Calendar.
How to Add a New Calendar Subscription
Open the Calendar app from the Dock or your Applications folder. From the main window, you can add a new calendar subscription by choosing File > New Calendar Subscription from the top menu bar, or by pressing Option+Command+S.
This will open up a window asking you for a URL, which should be a link to a file ending with an .ics extension. Depending on what calendar you’re trying to subscribe to, the method of getting this link may vary. We’ll be using Google Calendar in this example.
For Google Calendar, you can find the link by opening Settings, clicking on the calendar in the sidebar, and scrolling to the very bottom to find a box labeled “Secret address in iCal format.”
Copy this address and paste it into the Calendar app’s dialog. You’ll get an error message if the URL wasn’t an iCalendar link, but if it worked, you’ll see this screen with the subscription settings.
The main things to note here are the name you’d like it to be called in the Calendar app and how quickly it will sync with your Google Calendar. The default is once a week, but you can make it refresh every five minutes (or not at all). You can also change the color of the events with the dropdown next to the name.
Press “OK” once you’re done changing the settings. If everything worked, you’ll see a new checkbox in the sidebar and new events on your calendar.
You can toggle this to show and hide the subscription, and you can remove the subscription entirely by right-clicking it in the sidebar and selecting “Unsubscribe.” You can edit the settings from the same context menu by selecting “Get Info,” where you can change how often it updates.

Thousands of things happen every day. Your wedding anniversary, local ice hockey games, birthdays, film releases, national holidays…the list goes on. Keeping track of just the select few that are relevant to you is hard. That’s why we use calendars.
Sometimes, though, there’re events you’d love to have in your calendar that are too much hassle to add yourself…like the start time of every rugby game in the Six Nations. That’s where iCalShare comes in.
iCalShare is a website with thousands of calendars you can subscribe to. They’re mainly focused on national holidays and sporting events, but you can find calendars for everything from Xbox game releases to NASA’s launch schedule. You can subscribe to them with your favorite calendar app, like Google Calendar or iCal, and not have to worry about manually adding those events yourself.
Finding a calendar is simple. Either plug what you’re looking for into the search box…
…or browse through the categories to find the one you’re looking for.
If you use a calendar app on your computer or smartphone, click the “Subscribe to Calendar” button to add it. All the calendars use the iCal format, which is basically universal. If you’re lucky, pressing this button should automatically detect your calendar app and subscribe to the calendar for you.
If you’re using a web-based calendar like Google Calendar, though, things are a little trickier. To add a calendar, right-click on the Subscribe to Calendar button and click Copy Link.
Next, head to Google Calendar (or whatever other web-based calendar you’re using) and find the option to subscribe to a calendar. In Google Calendar, for example, you’ll click on the dropdown arrow next to Other Calendars and select Add by URL.
Paste the link you copied from iCalShare into the dialogue box and click Add Calendar.
You’re now subscribed to the calendar. Whenever it gets updated, you’ll get the new events automatically.
Isn’t that easier than adding every sporting match yourself?
Calendar subscriptions offer a convenient way for you to stay up to date with everything from national holidays to the match fixtures for your favorite sports team. In this article, we’ll show you how to subscribe to a public calendar on your iPhone or iPad – all you need in advance is the web address of the calendar (ics) file.
Note that if you want a calendar subscription to sync across all devices signed into your iCloud account, you’ll need to subscribe to it on your Mac. To do so, open the Calendar app in macOS and select File -> New Calendar Subscription, enter the URL of the calendar to subscribe to, and then select iCloud in the Location menu.
How to Subscribe to a Calendar in iOS 11
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Accounts & Passwords.
- Under the Accounts section, tap Add Account.
How to Remove a Calendar Subscription in iOS 11
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Accounts & Passwords.
- Tap Subscribed Calendars.
With macOS, you can view a calendar that someone has published or shared by subscribing to it in the Calendar app. However, you can’t edit calendars you’re subscribed to.
Why not? They’re controlled by the provider. If you want to use a calendar that several people can edit, share it instead.
How To Share iCloud Calendars
You can share iCloud calendars with others who also have iCloud accounts. You can choose whether others can edit the calendar or only view it. If you’re in a Family Sharing group, a Family calendar automatically appears in the iCloud calendar list. Everyone in the group can view and update the same Family calendar. Here’s how:
- In the Calendar app on your Mac, place the pointer over the calendar’s name in the calendar list, then click the Share Calendar button.
- If you don’t see the calendar list on the left, choose “View > Show Calendar List.”
- Click “Share With…” then enter the names or email addresses of people you want to invite to share your calendar. You can also enter the name of a group in Contacts to invite all the group members.
- If you don’t see “Share With…” click below the last name or email address in the “Shared With” list. If you see a “Shared By [name]” list instead of a “Shared With” list, only the person named can add people because they own the calendar.
- To keep someone from making changes to your shared calendar, Control-click the person’s name or email address in the “Shared With” list, then choose “View Only.”
- To let anyone view your calendar—including people not listed in the “Shared With” list—select “Public Calendar.”
- To send people a link to subscribe to your public calendar, click the Share button, then choose how you want to send the link.
- People who subscribe to your public calendar can view it, but can’t change it. Only people listed in the “Share With” field who have “View & Edit” privileges can make changes.
- Click Done.
People you added to the “Shared With” list are sent an invitation (a notification and an email) to join the shared calendar.
How To Share Other (non-iCloud) Calendars
You can share individual calendars or share calendar accounts with people who use the same calendar service. To do so:
- In the Calendar app on your Mac, choose “Calendar > Preferences,” then click “Accounts.”
- Select the calendar account.
- Click “Delegation,” click “Edit,” then click the “Add” (+) button.
- Enter the name of the person you want to give access to, then choose his or her name from the list that appears.
- If you’re giving access to a CalDAV account, select the “Allow Write” checkbox to let the person edit your calendars.
- If you’re giving access to an Exchange account, select the person’s level of access from the Calendars column.
How To Subscribe to a Calendar
To subscribe to a calendar from a link on the Internet or an email you received, click the link. If you do this, you can skip step 1, and the calendar’s web address is filled out for you in step 2.
- In the Calendar app on your Mac, choose “File > New Calendar Subscription.”
- Enter the calendar’s web address, then click “Subscribe.”
- Enter a name for the calendar in the Name field, then click the adjacent pop-up menu and choose a color.
- Click the Location pop-up menu, then choose an account for the subscription. If you choose your iCloud account, the calendar is available on all your computers and devices that are set up with iCloud. If you choose On My Mac, the calendar is saved on your computer.
- To get the calendar’s event attachments or alerts, deselect the appropriate Remove checkboxes.
- Click the Auto-refresh pop-up menu, then choose how often to update the calendar.
- To prevent alerts from appearing for this calendar, select “Ignore alerts.”
- Click OK.
To make changes later, click the name of the calendar, then choose Edit > Get Info.
How To Unsubscribe From a Calendar
If you want to stop subscribing to someone else’s calendar, you can unsubscribe from it:
- In the Calendar app, Control-click the calendar in the calendar list, then choose “Unsubscribe.”
- If you don’t see the calendar list on the left, choose “View Show Calendar List.”
These instructions apply, for the most part, to other versions of macOS besides Catalina. However, I’m using Catalina on a 16-inch MacBook Pro for this tutorial.
Note: You’re using Outlook on the web if you use a work or school account to sign in to Microsoft 365. To get instructions for importing or subscribing to a calendar in an Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN account, see Import or subscribe to a calendar in Outlook.com.
In Outlook on the web, you can import events from an .ics file to your existing calendar or subscribe to a calendar online and receive automatic updates (known as an ICS subscription or an iCal subscription). You can import calendars from websites or calendar programs that support the .ics file format, such as Apple iCal, Google Calendar, and Mozilla Lightning.
You can search the internet for lists of iCals. Websites for theaters, sports teams, and schools often have an “Add to calendar” link that you can use to download an iCal. Bing also has suggestions for calendars.
For more information about adding calendars, see Add a calendar in Outlook.com or Outlook on the web.
Note: Microsoft isn’t responsible for the accuracy or content of any third-party calendars. We recommend that you review the terms and conditions before importing or subscribing to any third-party calendars.
Note: If the instructions don’t match what you see, you might be using an older version of Outlook on the web. Try the Instructions for classic Outlook on the web.
Locate the calendar you want to add and save it to a folder on your computer as an .ics file.
At the bottom of the page, select to go to Calendar.
In the navigation pane, select Import calendar.
Under Import calendar, select From file.
Under Import from file, select Browse, choose an .ics file, and then select Open.
Under Import to, select the calendar that you want the file imported to, and then select Import.
At the bottom of the page, select to go to Calendar.
In the navigation pane, select Import calendar.
Under Import calendar, select From web.
Under Link to the calendar, type the URL for the linked calendar.
Under Calendar name, type the name you want to use for the calendar.
Note: Whenever events change on an iCal, it can take more than 24 hours for Outlook on the web to update your calendar.
At the bottom of the page, select to go to Calendar.
In the calendar navigation pane, select Import calendar.
Under Import calendar, select From directory.
Enter the name or email address of the calendar you want to add. Outlook on the web will automatically find matching entries from the organization’s directory.
Note: You can add only one calendar at a time. Repeat the instructions for each calendar you want to add.
Instructions for classic Outlook on the web
Locate the calendar you want to add and save it to a folder on your computer as an .ics file.
At the bottom of the navigation pane, click the Calendar icon.
On the toolbar, click Add calendar.
Click From file, click Browse, choose an .ics file, and click Open.
Click the down arrow next to Calendar, and choose a calendar from the list.
At the bottom of the navigation pane, click the Calendar icon.
On the toolbar, click Add calendar.
Click From Internet, and in the Link to the calendar box, type or copy and paste the web address of the calendar.
In the Calendar name box, enter a name for the linked calendar.
Note: Whenever events change on an iCal, it can take more than 24 hours for Outlook on the web to update your calendar.
In the calendar, go to the toolbar and select Add calendar > From directory.
In the From directory box, type the name of the calendar you want to add. Outlook on the web will automatically find matching entries from the organization’s directory.
Choose the calendar you want to add, then select Open.
The difference between importing and subscribing
When you import an .ics file, you get a snapshot of the events in the calendar at the time of import. Your calendar doesn’t refresh the imported events automatically — even if the calendar’s owner makes an update. This is a good way to add events that aren’t going to change to your existing calendar, like tide tables, or phases of the moon.
Subscribing to an iCal online calendar connects it to your calendar. Whenever the owner of an iCal you’ve subscribed to makes changes to the events, Outlook on the web updates your calendar. This is a good way to track events that change frequently, like movie times or a school calendar.
Note: This update can take more than 24 hours.
I recently wrote a post describing how to add the schedule of the Euro 2016 to your iPhone, Mac, or iPad calendar app in order to keep up with the competition. As described in my post, subscribing to this calendar (or any other calendar) directly from your iPhone or iPad, will only add the calendar locally on the device, but it won’t sync across all your other devices like an iCloud calendar would.
iDB reader Kyler emailed us earlier today asking how he can subscribe to a calendar while adding it to his iCloud account to make sure the calendar events sync to his iPhone, iPad, and Mac, without having to manually subscribe to the calendar on each device. This is what we’re going to do look at in this post.
For some reason, Apple doesn’t let you set up a new iCloud calendar subscription directly from your iPhone or iPad. Instead, you must be using a Mac if you want to push events of the subscribed calendar to your other devices via iCloud.
How to set up a new iCloud calendar subscription
1) Launch the Calendar application on your Mac.
2) In the Menu Bar, go to File > New Calendar Subscription…
3) Copy/paste the URL of the calendar you want to subscribe to, then click on the Subscribe button to confirm.
4) At this point, you may change the name of the calendar, its color, and a few other settings. But the most important part is to choose “iCloud” from the Location menu. Doing this will effectively turn the calendar subscription into an iCloud calendar.
Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, there is no way to do all this directly from your iPhone or iPad, which is a pretty major shortcoming of the Calendar app on iOS.
How to turn an existing calendar subscription into an iCloud calendar
Now let’s imagine that you have already subscribed to a calendar on your Mac and you want to change it from a local calendar to an iCloud calendar.
1) On your Mac, click on the Calendars button to show all your calendars.
2) Find the calendar subscription you want to turn into an iCloud calendar. In our case, this will be the Euro 2016 calendar.
3) Right click on that calendar and choose Get Info.
4) Select “iCloud” from the Location menu, and click OK to confirm. Your calendar subscription will then turn into an iCloud calendar that will sync across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
Once again, the only way to do this is directly from your Mac, so hopefully, Apple will include a similar feature in iOS at some point in the future to allow you to edit or set up new iCloud calendar subscriptions directly from iPhone or iPad. Until then, what’s described above is your only option.

My Subscribed Calendars on my Mac’s Calendar app are not syncing to my iPhone and iPad Pro running iOS 11 B2 (same with B1). However they are still syncing to my iPad Air on iOS 10. I have BRed but would like to hear if others are seeing the same thing since there is no mention of this in the release notes.
I have tried deleting and resubscribing and no go. If I change the color it changes on my iDevices but no info syncs to the actual Calendar.

Now that the Public Beta is out can anyone who has a subscribed Calendar check this? Or even subscribe to one just to check. Here is a site where you can easily subscribe to one. You can just delete it after you check if not interested.
