You cannot close the browser tab to log out of a service / platform that you recently logged into. The session generally remains active with the help of cookies stored in your browser. This could pose a threat if you try to access your Gmail account on a shared computer. Therefore, in this article, we will let you know that you must actually log out of Gmail.

Sign out from the Gmail

  • Depending on the device you use Gmail on, you can sign out of Gmail, delete your Google account, or switch from one account to another.
  • The only way to log out of the Gmail app is to delete your entire account from your phone or tablet.
  • However, you can perform many of the same tasks through other actions.

How to sign out of gmail

Delete your Google account from your device

When you delete an account, you delete the account from all applications on the device. When your account is deleted, you will not be able to sign in to any Google product, such as Maps or YouTube.

This option is good if you want to delete personal information from your device before giving it to someone else.

Note: Deleting the account from your phone or tablet will not delete the account itself, so you can still use it on a computer or other devices.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail Gmail app.
In the upper right corner, tap your profile picture.
Tap Manage accounts on this device.
Choose your account.
At the bottom, tap Remove account.
Check email from another account
Tip: If you share a device with other people, try adding them as separate users or adding them as guests on your device.

You will only see the option to check email from a non-Gmail email account if you are using an updated version of the Gmail app. If these steps don’t work, try updating the Gmail app and then try again.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail Gmail app.
In the upper right corner, tap your profile picture.
Tap Add another account.
Choose the type of account you want to add.
If you check work or school emails through Outlook for Windows, select Outlook, Hotmail, and Live.

If you don’t see your email service, select Other.
Follow the steps on the screen to add your account.
Touch the account you want to use.

Log out from the desktop web browser

  • Quitting Gmail when you log in from your desktop web browser is just a few clicks away. You just need to follow the steps below:
  • You can look at his profile picture in the upper right corner of the website (when he’s on Gmail.com), just click on it.
  • Now, you will notice the “Logout” button, just click on it and you’re done.
Log out of all active sessions: use the web browser.
  • If you don’t have access to the devices or the computer you previously logged into your Gmail account, you can log out of all sessions and devices by following the steps below:

After logging into Gmail.com, you will need to scroll down to the bottom of the web page to find an option to learn about recent account activity. This is how it should look: gmail session details

Now, you must click on “Details”. You will see a new browser popup with all the recent activities associated with your account, as shown in the image below.

Gmail session logout

  • Finally, click “Sign out of all other web sessions” as shown in the image above to sign out of all active sessions in Gmail.
  • Sign out of the Gmail app: iOS devices
  • Note: You can refer to the same set of steps if you use the Gmail “Inbox” application.

sign out of the Gmail app

  • Launch the Gmail app on your iPhone. You must look at the upper left corner of the screen to find the hamburger menu icon. Just touch it.
  • Now, tap on the drop down arrow icon next to your email address as shown in the image above.
  • Then tap the “Manage accounts” option.
  • Now, you can see all your registered accounts in the list. You can toggle the listed accounts to disable / enable them in the app. If you want to log out, you need to tap the “EDIT” option in the upper right corner of the screen and then tap to delete your account as shown in the image below. Sign out and delete your Gmail account on an iOS device

When you delete the Gmail account from the app on your iOS device, you do not completely delete / close the account from your device. Your account can still log in to sync contacts, calendars, notes, and mail. So in order to delete your Gmail account on an iOS device, you need to follow the steps mentioned below:

How to sign out of gmail

Your Gmail account is home to more than just emails. When you log into Google, you’re opening access to Google Calendar, the Play Store, and Drive, to name just a few. To help keep that information safe, you should sign out of Gmail when you’re done—especially if you’re using a public or shared computer. Here’s how to do it.

How to Sign Out Of Gmail

In Gmail, click your profile picture at the top right of the page. In the dropdown box that opens, just click the “Sign Out” option. That’s it. You’re done.

How to sign out of gmail

Note that if you use multiple accounts, that dropdown will show a list of your accounts. Click the one you want to sign out from, and then use the “Sign Out” option.

On Public Computers, Consider Using Private Browsing

How to sign out of gmail

Pretty much every modern browser offers a private browsing mode. Some call it private browsing, while some (like Chrome) call it Incognito Mode. Whatever your browser calls it, it works pretty much the same way. When you open a private or incognito window, the browser does not store your browsing history, cookies, site data, or any information entered into forms.

When you close the private window, the browser “forgets” your account and history. This gives you more assurance that when you exit the window, your session is no longer accessible from that machine.

If you’re using a public computer, we highly recommend using private browsing to keep your information as safe as possible

When Letting Someone Else Use Your Chrome Browser, Consider Using Guest Mode

In addition to private browsing, Google Chrome also offers something named Guest Mode. It works something like Incognito Mode, in that it does not save any browsing information to the computer. However, when someone is using Guest Mode, they also cannot see or change the information in any other user’s profile.

In other words, you can let a guest hit the web in your Chrome browser, safe in the knowledge that they cannot access your browsing history, saved passwords, and so on. It’s great for letting someone else get on the web or check their Gmail account.

To enable Guest Mode, click the current user’s name at the top right of the browser, and then click the “Guest” option.

How to sign out of gmail

This opens a new browser window for your guest to use, and you can sign out of your own account.

When your guest has finished browsing, they can click “Guest” in the top right corner, and then click the “Exit Guest” option.

The standard Google account is tied to all sorts of data, much of which is potentially sensitive in nature.

Google stores data in your Drive folders, Google Docs and Sheets, Google Calendar, and of course to the emails sent and received via your Gmail address.

If you use Gmail or other Google platforms on your iPhone, it’s a good idea to make sure you are logged out of Google before you ever give that iPhone to anyone else.

And the best way to be sure you are logged out of Gmail on your iPhone is to remove your Google account from the phone entirely.

Here’s how to do it.

How to sign out of gmail

Signing out of Gmail on Android isn’t too difficult, just sign out of the Google account on your phone and you will sign out of Gmail too. However, this also signs you out of other Google apps like Chrome, Play Store, Maps, and Google Assistant, etc. If you only want to sign out of Gmail while staying signed in to other apps, then there is a workaround.

Of course, you can’t actually sign out of Gmail individually, but you can get rid of all the synced emails and prevent new emails from reaching your account. Basically, this will empty your account and keep it like that so it will be similar to signing out.

Sign out of Gmail on Android

Before I tell you how to do it, it’s important to know that your account email will stay logged in and anyone else can interact with it as possible. This also including re-syncing emails to get access to your emails. Therefore, you can only use this workaround to keep your account clean in case you don’t want to see your emails on that phone.

First, you need to disable email syncing for that specific account on your phone. Here’s how:

Go to the phone “Settings” and tap on the “Users & accounts” option here.

Now tap on the Google account for which you want to disable syncing and then tap on “Account sync” on the next page.

How to sign out of gmail

Here from the list, turn off the toggle next to Gmail.

How to sign out of gmail

This will prevent all future emails from automatically syncing to this phone. If you want to get rid of currently stored emails as well, then you will have to delete all the data of the Gmail app. Here’s how:

Go to “Settings” again and tap on “Apps”

Here open up the Gmail app and tap on the “Storage” option.

Now tap on “Clear Data” and confirm the prompt to clear all Gmail data.

How to sign out of gmail

This will reset your Gmail app and it will sign in again when you will open the Gmail app. However, there will be no emails in the app. You will get a notification that auto-sync is disabled, but you can dismiss it easily.

Ending thoughts

I know this isn’t a very reliable method to sign out of Gmail, but it should work fine to keep an account clear while you use another one. If you don’t want to use Gmail on your phone at all, then you can also completely disable the Gmail app from the app details section.

Is your Google account been compromised or did you lose your device? Do you wish you had a faster way to sign out of all Google accounts before you change your password? Then you’ve come to the right place. Here, I am going to teach you How to sign out of Gmail and all Google accounts at once. How to sign out of gmail

How to sign out of Gmail and all Google accounts at once

Step 1: Go to Gmail.com and sign in.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for Recent Activity. Click on it.

Step 3: Click on Details.

Step 4: You will see a popup window showing when and where your account is being used.

Step 5: Click on Sign out all other sessions.

Step 6: Now all the devices which is currently logged on to your account will be forced to sign in again.

Now if your lost phone was on wrong hands, you will not have to fear about your critical data getting into the wrong hands. They will have to enter the password (which they don’t know) again to get into your account. You should do this after you’ve located your device if you intend to find it because after you sign out you will not be able to track your device as you need Google’s location tools.

A quick workaround to log out of only one Google account but not all of them.

There is no problem if you are logged into multiple Google accounts on your computer as long as you don’t want to sign out of one of them. That’s because Google doesn’t allow users to sign out of just one Google account. The only option you now get is to “Sign out of all accounts” while using Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, or YouTube. This happens in every browser on a computer, irrespective of whether it’s Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

Google forces to sign out of all accounts?

While this shouldn’t be a concern for users who manage a single Google account. However, things can be really annoying and inconvenient for people who are simultaneously logged into several accounts.

Let’s say you have five or six Gmail accounts, they can be personal, related to a brand, business, kids, and even guests. Now if you want to log out of one or two of the accounts then you won’t be able to do so. Google instead forces you to log out of all Gmail accounts just to log out of a single Google account.

As a result, one has to re-login into all of the other accounts they wish to remain signed in to, every time they want to sign out of an individual Google account. The situation can get messier when passwords aren’t saved for accounts that you don’t wish to log out from. Needless to say, this is a bad UX decision by Google that makes a simple thing cumbersome and time consuming for end users.

Unfortunately, there is nothing much you can do to get rid of this stupid limitation.

However, there is a workaround that one can use to sign out of just one Google account when using multiple account sign-in. This way you can sign out of a particular Gmail account on your PC without affecting the rest of the active accounts. To do so, follow the steps below.

How to sign out of one Gmail account on a computer

  2. Tap your profile picture from the top right corner. A list of all logged-in accounts will appear.
