With more and more Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world capping bandwidth for subscribers, these users have to find ways to monitor network usage to avoid slow service and high fees. Windows 8 has a built-in tool to show network usage statistics as well as ways to limit your usage to help keep on top of it before your ISP caps you.

How to show network usage statistics

1. Head to your Windows 8 desktop.

2. Click on the “Internet Connection” icon in the taskbar.

3. “Right-click” your Internet connection.

A small menu will appear.

4. Click “Show estimated data usage.”

5. “Left-click” your Internet connection again.

A drop down menu will appear that will give you your estimated usage since Windows 8 started recording it. If you have never turned this on before, it’ll be since you installed Windows 8. You can reset the stats at any time by clicking “Reset.”

Windows 8 only gives you an estimate of usage. For more in-depth statistics, we will take a look at a Windows Store app that gives you more information.

Using the Network Usage app

You can download the Network Usage app from the Windows Store.

Once installed, Network Usage will breakdown your monthly and daily MBs sent and received on an Internet connection.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

If you click on any month with data, you can see the breakdown daily of what was sent and received.

On days that have particularly high data usage, you can recall what you did that day to figure out ways to cut back on sending and receiving data.

Network Usage will keep records for all network connections you have utilized until you reset it. This includes networks you merely connected to once or your home network you stay connected to most of the time.

How to limit your network usage

If you are already using a metered connection, you may need to ensure you are not downloading over it. Depending on your data plan with your ISP, you may or may not have to worry about limiting your usage. Windows 8 has a built-in setting to help meter your own connection.

1. In order to do that, open the “Charms Bar.” Then click “Change PC Settings,” followed by “Devices” under PC settings.

2. Scroll down below your devices, and you will see the “Download over metered connections” option.

3. Ensure this is turned off.

This means you will never download software drivers, information, apps or updates when you have a metered network connection. This will help save bandwidth and keep your usage low when you cannot afford to go over.

Windows 8 lets you quickly go from ametered connection to a non-metered one through the network properties.

4. Open your network connection.

5. “Left-click” your Internet connection.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

Keep in mind that only wireless connections can be metered in Windows 8. Wired connections cannot.

6. Click “Set as metered connection.”

The unwanted data that was configured above will no longer be downloaded.

You can toggle this on or off any time by following steps 4 through 6.

Conclusion

Check with your ISP to see if you are on a metered data plan. You could be and may not even know it. If you are, the steps above can help give you an idea of what you are using each month, and you can take precautions to not go over your data allotment.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

One of the less obvious features in Windows 8.1 is the ability to track data usage on a connection — handy if you’re using mobile Wi-Fi or a limited connection in a hotel. Here’s how to set it up.

To enable this option:

  • Make sure you’re connected to the network you want to measure.
  • Bring up the Settings charm by swiping from the right (or type Windows-I).
  • Choose ‘Change PC settings’.
  • Choose ‘Network’.
  • Under Data Usage, switch ‘Show my estimated data usage on the Networks list’ to ‘On’.

With that option enabled, you’ll see estimated usage if you tap on the Networks icon in Settings. It’s a potentially useful second check against other estimates (such as those provided by your carrier).

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

With the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft made a great number of improvements to Windows 8. Unfortunately, it also marked a step backwards in terms of easily adjusting your network settings. Here’s an update of how to monitor or limit data use in Windows 8.1. In Windows 8, one could easily mark a network as metered (that is, pay by amount used) by right-clicking it in the network list. I wrote about this tip in my earlier quick tip: Monitor or Limit Data Usage in Windows 8.

This handy shortcut is, for reasons not explained or understood, missing from Windows 8.1. But the option still exists if you know where to look. Here’s where to look:

  1. Swipe in from the right and chose Settings (or press +i) and choose Change PC Settings.
  2. Click Network, then Connections.
  3. Click the name of the network you’re using, then choose the appropriate options.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

After opting to show estimated data usage, you can swipe in from the right and choose Network to see your usage (example in image above).

As before, marking a network as metered will reduce the amount of data that is used through this connection. Windows will not download automatic updates or automatically transfer SkyDrive uploads over a metered connection. Other apps can take advantage of this as well and do their part to use less data, such as refreshing less frequently (or only manually within the app).

If you do not see the set as metered connection option, you’ll need to sign into Windows using an administrator account to make the change. You can change your account type in the Control Panel.

Even for those of you lucky enough to have unlimited data plans can benefit from using metered connections. These are greatly useful on the road using mifi or other shared hotspots where bandwidth – and power – are at a premium.

Here is a short tutorial that explains how to show estimated data usage in Windows 8 in two different ways. You don’t need to install any additional software for this.

If you have limited data usage plan, you always worry about how much data you have used so far and how much data you still have. Windows 7 doesn’t provide any native application for tracking the data usage (you can use various freeware to monitor data usage in Windows 7). But Microsoft has introduced this feature in Windows 8. You can easily track your data usage directly from your network list.

By default, this feature is turned off. Use below mentioned two different ways to turn it “On”

Show Estimated Data Usage In Windows 8 Using Desktop:

See how much data you’re using

For a very basic overview of your network usage, you can open up the Settings menu and go to Network & Internet and click Data usage.

Here you’ll see a donut graph that shows how much data you’ve used over what types of connections in the last 30 days. In my case, I’ve only used data over a wired Ethernet connection, but if you switch between Ethernet, Wi-Fi and mobile data, you’ll see a mix of sources.

Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET

Under the donut graph, you can click Usage details to see how much data each app is using. You’ll see both native Windows 10 apps and desktop apps, such as Google Chrome, Spotify and Mozilla Firefox.

Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET

If you’d like to check how much data your apps are using over a normal network versus a metered network, you can see some of this information in the Task Manager. To do this, open the Task Manager (right-click on the Start menu button and click Task Manager) and click the App history tab. Here you’ll see a list of apps, as well as how much network and metered network usage they account for.

But there’s one issue with this list — it only shows native Windows 10 apps, not desktop applications. As you can see, I don’t use a lot of native Windows 10 apps, so this list is not very helpful in determining the apps that really eat up data.

Set up a metered connection

If you don’t want Windows to automatically download large updates (including app updates), you can set your Wi-Fi connection to “metered.” To do this, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi, scroll down to the bottom of the list of Wi-Fi networks, and click Advanced options.

In the Advanced options menu, you’ll see an option to turn Set as metered connection on or off.

Data-saving tips

Simply limiting your connection isn’t enough to really save data — while it means you won’t get big Windows updates until you connect to a non-metered connection, apps will still run and sync in the background.

Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET

You can turn off background app activity by going to Settings > Privacy > Background apps. Here, you will see a list of apps that use background data for things like push notifications and updates.

Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET

You can turn off background activity for individual apps (again, only native Windows 10 apps on this list) by switching the toggle next to the app to Off.

You can also save some data by disabling unnecessary syncing — specifically, Windows 10’s settings syncing, which syncs your Windows 10 settings across devices.

To do this, go to Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings and switch Sync settings to Off.

Windows 8 can designate Wi-Fi connections as metered, so you can better manage data usage on connections with a data limit.

One of the new features of Windows 8 is metered wireless connections. In the past, you could run Windows programs to monitor your data usage , but they didn’t do anything to actually reduce data usage. With mobile hot spot and broadband card usage on the rise and unlimited data plans nearing extinction, every kilobyte of bandwidth saved is a penny earned. Enabling metering in Windows 8 will limit your PC or tablet’s data usage by preventing nonessential data transfers.

According to Microsoft’s FAQ on metered connections, the effects of enabling a metered connection are:

  • Windows Update will only download priority updates.
  • Apps from the Windows Store may pause downloads.
  • Start screen tiles may stop updating.
  • Offline files may stop syncing automatically.

Enable metering
To enable metering on a wireless connection, go to the Wi-Fi network list and right-click on your connection. Touch-screen and tablet users should perform a long press. When the list of options appears, select “Set as metered connection.”

Disable data usage over metered connection
There are two metered connection settings that can further reduce data usage. The first is downloading device software. Go to Settings > Change PC Settings > Devices and make sure that “Download over metered connections” is off.

The second setting is syncing settings. Go to Settings > Change PC Settings > Sync your settings, and make sure that both “Sync settings over metered connections” and “Sync settings over metered connections even when I’m roaming” are off.

Check data usage
To see how much data you’ve used on your connection, go back to your network list and left-click on your connection. Touch-screen and tablet users should perform a single tap. Unfortunately, there’s no way to set the counter to automatically reset on a schedule, but you can manually select “Reset” on the first day of your billing cycle.

Check app usage history
If you want to figure out which apps are using the most data, go to the Task Manager and click on the “App history” tab. You’ll see separate columns for overall network usage, metered network, and tile updates. You can get to the Task Manager from the Start screen by typing “task manager” or right-click on the desktop taskbar and select “Task Manager.”

That’s it. Now you know how to use metered connections in Windows 8 to keep your data usage in check. Keep in mind that metered connections only work with Wi-Fi connections; Ethernet connections cannot be metered.

Metered connections is one of the features of Windows 8 which was not present in Windows 7 or earlier Operating Systems. This setting has been a life saver for me several times. Through metered connection, I can choose whether Windows system should use the Internet resources or not. We can limit the Internet bandwidth used by Windows 8 or later Operating Systems through metered connection settings.

If you are a power user, you must have seen a process svchost.exe (netsvcs) using your Internet bandwidth. This may be stopped by setting your connection as a metered connection in Windows.

  • Tracking data usage on a metered connection
  • What does a metered connection do?

A metered connection will restrict applications from using extra Internet bandwidth. It especially does the following:

    • Windows Update will only download priority updates.
    • Apps downloading from Windows Store will be paused.
    • Start Screen tiles will stop updating live data from the Internet.
    • Offline files will not synchronize automatically through the Internet.

Setting a Metered connection in Windows 8/8.1/10

Configuration settings of metered connections are almost the same in Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. The screenshots in this article are taken on a Windows 8 PC.

Setting a network connection in Windows 8 as metered connection is pretty easy. Just follow the step by step information given below:

    1. Go to the Charms bar (Windows Key + i)
    2. Select Change PC Settings
    3. Select Network from the left hand menu
    4. You will get a list of network connections on the right hand pane. Select the connection you want to change to metered connection
    5. Set the “Set as metered connection” setting to On.

To disable the metered connection setting on any network connection, just follow the same steps and at the last step, just set the metered connection setting to off.

Please note that Ethernet networks can’t be set as metered connections. You will need to have a wireless connection to set it as a metered connection.

Disable synchronization and device updates under a metered connection

There are a few settings you can configure to save more bandwidth than the default settings.

    Disable OneDrive Sync Settings

Windows 8 or above have Microsoft OneDrive integrated into the Operating System. So OneDrive always keeps on synchronizing data which consumes a considerable amount of bandwidth. You may turn it off by following the steps below:

    1. Go to Charms bar –> Settings (Windows Key + i) –> Change PC Settings
    2. Select OneDrive from the left side menu and then select Metered Connections from the left side menu
    3. On the right hand pane, under Sync settings, turn both settings to off.

    Turn off device updates

Turning off device updates will prevent Windows from downloading information for new device drivers and updating the drivers on a metered connection.

    1. Go to Charms bar –> Settings (Windows Key + i) –> Change PC Settings
    2. Select PC and Devices from the left side menu
    3. Select Devices and make sure Download over metered connections is set to off.

Disable Search Suggestions and Bing Search Results

If you use Windows Search in Windows 8 or above, you will notice that it is powered by Bing as you’ll get web results along with the local search results. You can turn this search feature off on metered connections.

    1. Go to Charms bar –> Settings (Windows Key + i) –> Change PC Settings
    2. Select Search and Apps from the left side menu
    3. Select Search from the left side menu and turn off both settings under Metered Connections

Tracking data usage on a metered connection

Windows provides a very basic calculation on data usage over a metered connection. It will only list down the amount of data that has been downloaded and uploaded over the connection. If you want more details, I recommend a free utility called NetWorx which gives a lot of information as well as simple upload and download data usage.

To turn on tracking of data usage on a metered connection, do the following:

    1. Click or tap on Network Connections icon in the system tray
    2. Right click the network you want and select Show Estimated Data Usage
    3. Left clicking on the network will show you the estimated data usage

I hope I have covered most of the settings of Metered Connections in Windows. If I have missed anything or you have any suggestions, we are always open on discussions in the comments below.

I used to think that the days of tracking my use of the web were over. In the days of dial up connections, I — like just about everyone else using the internet — was painfully aware that every minute online was costing me money. Along came broadband and it brought with it new limitations. Some ISPs offered unlimited bandwidth, but many placed restrictions on how much it was possible to upload and download.

For many people, this is still true, although there are a number of ISPs who offer truly unlimited tariffs. If you are with such an ISP, hold on to it dearly. They are a dying breed. Going mobile, my mind often used to turn to bandwidth usage, lest my mobile provider hit me with a gigantic bill at the end of the month for downloading everything under the sun on my phone. Thankfully, I now have an unlimited data tariff, so I can happily download day in, day out.

But within Windows, I’d become used to just not thinking about how much I was downloading. Why should I concern myself? I pay the same whether I download 1GB or 100GB of data in a month. Living in rural Scotland I’ve had to endure tying dire broadband since moving house back in April. It has been the bane of my life, and there have been times when I would love to be able to even think about downloading 1GB in a month, let alone worry about whether it’s going to take me over any limit.

Now things are different. I’ve just had satellite broadband installed. Like the early days of DSL, satellite connections come with limitations. I’m going to have to keep a close watch on how much I’m using the internet or my connection will be throttled. I spent a little time wondering how to keep track of how many gigabytes I’ve managed to eat through. It turns out that mobiles are big culprits, but as my girlfriend and I are both permanently connected to the web there are at least two laptop to consider.

I browsed various download sites and recalled various bandwidth trackers like NetWorx. But then I remembered something. Windows 8.x can do it all for me! I don’t need an app, it’s a built in feature! I’d forgotten about it, and you may have to. Here’s how to use it:

    • Click the network icon in the notification area of the system tray and right click the network you are connect to or want to monitor.
    • Click the Set as metered connection option.
    • Right click again and select Show estimated data usage.
    • To start with a blank slate, click the Reset link.

From this point forward, if you want to check how much data you’ve transferred, click the network icon followed by the network name. That’s all there is to it.

Many users at the end of each month receive big data bills, unaware of the fact that they had crossed the data limit. Smartphone users especially face this problem. Though many Internet Service Providers via different ways do alert you when your data usage reaches a certain threshold, it’s always advisable to monitor Data Usage for Wireless before it exceeds the allotment. Windows 8 offers many apps – and these apps without your knowledge may constantly be pulling in data from the Internet.

In this post, we will see how we can monitor data usage for Wireless Networks in Windows 8.

Monitor Data Usage in Windows 8.1

In Windows 8 you can get real-time local data usage estimates for Wi-Fi and mobile broadband network connections. The usage estimates are provided by the local counters which track the amount of data used on each individual wireless network. You can choose to have the counters remain hidden or be shown at any given time.

Show or Hide Data Usage for Wireless Networks

To begin with, open your Control Panel and navigate to Network and Sharing Center. Click on Connect to a network link.

You will observe the Charms Bar open and the ‘Networks’ pane visible on the right-hand side. Right-click on Wi-Fi connection status and from the list of options displayed, click on ‘Show estimated data usage’.

The action will then display the estimated data usage counter for the wireless network.

To hide the data usage for Wireless networks in Windows 8 simply, right-click on the Wi-Fi connection status again and select the option ‘Hide estimated data usage’.

If you want, you can reset the counter at any given time using the Reset button.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

Using your smartphone or a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to access the Internet on your Windows 8 laptop? If so, careful—you’d be surprised how much mobile data your notebook PC can burn through in a matter of minutes.

Streaming videos on Netflix or Hulu is an obvious culprit, but there are also plenty of other ways for your laptop to quietly tear through your monthly allotment of wireless data—anything from fetching large email attachments to syncing files with Dropbox or automatic downloads of massive Windows system updates.

Luckily, you can check your data usage on a Windows 8 laptop or tablet in just a few clicks, and there’s even a way to let your system know that you’re using a “metered” hotspot—and to cool it with the data usage.

    • First, open the Settings panel. Using a mouse, just move the cursor to the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen, then click the Settings icon (or “charm,” as Microsoft calls it). On a tablet, swipe “in” from the right side of the screen, then tap Settings.
    • Near the bottom of the Settings panel, you should see a network icon (the one with the signal-strength bars) labeled with the name of the hotspot your PC or tablet is connected to. Go ahead and tap or click it.
    • You should now be seeing a list of available Wi-Fi networks, with the one you’re connected to at the very top. Click or tap the name of your connected hotspot to see how much data you’ve been using, or right-click (on a PC) or tap and hold (on a tablet) the hotspot name and select “Show estimated data usage.”

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

You can designate a mobile hotspot as a “metered connection” in Windows 8.

Now, want to keep your Windows 8 PC or tablet from gobbling up an excessive amount of mobile data? You can do so by setting a given hotspot as a “metered connection.”

Just go back to the Networks panel (click the Settings icon, then Networks), right-click or tap and hold the hotspot you’re connected to, then select “Set as metered connection” from the pop-up menu.

With the “metered connection” setting enabled, your system will pause Windows 8 app downloads from the Windows Store, cut down on “live” tile activity on the Start screen, and—most importantly—stop downloading all but “priority” Windows update files.

Nice, but keep in mind that the metered connection setting won’t do anything to curb data usage on programs in the classic “desktop” environment—meaning that Dropbox, for example, will keep on syncing files, while Outlook will continue to download hefty email attachments.

In other words, you’ll still be on the hook for disabling bandwidth-munching features in your desktop apps, so make sure to tweak, disable, or quit any applications that are using more than their fair share of data. For example, you can pause Dropbox syncing by right-clicking the Dropbox desktop icon, and you can keep Outlook from downloading attachments in the Preferences menu.

    Bonus tip

Don’t want your Windows PC to download any system update without your OK? Here’s how…

    • Open the Control Panel (just type “Control Panel” from the Start menu, then click the Control Panel search result), click “System and Security, Windows Update, then click the “Change settings” link in the left column.
    • In the “Important updates” section, click the pull-down menu and select “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.”

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

We Australians love our online access and statistics from the government prove it.

In 2017, there were over 14.2 million internet subscribers. And, in just the last quarter alone, we used over 3.6 million terabytes of data. That’s a lot of funny cat videos and Netflix binge-watching!

At Mate, we don’t believe in capping your browsing, surfing, and streaming potential – which is why all of our plans feature unlimited data. However, if you’re still dragging your feet and considering a breakup with one of our competitors, it might be useful to understand just how much you’re actually using each month.

Here are a few tips on how to check your data usage for your internet plan.

Tip #1: Review your last bill

The easiest way to check your data usage is to simply look on your last bill. This usually gives you a good idea of not only how much data was used last month, but where you stand on average. And – if you’re super unlucky – you might realise you’ve gone over the mark for the month and now owe an overage charge to your current carrier.

Tip #2: Use the integrated settings on your smartphone or tablet

If you aren’t sure where you stand on data, your beloved smartphone or tablet can help. For Apple users, start with the Settings display. Then look for an option that says Mobile Data or Cellular Data. From there, you’ll be able to determine how much you are using and limit which apps you want to slow down. The process is similar for Android users and also begins with the Settings menu and Data Usage drop-down.

Tip #3: Check data usage in Windows

The software development team at Windows also has you covered when it comes to checking data usage on your PC computer. This works on both desktops and laptops. Click the Settings icon in the right corner of the start menu bar. Then click the Network icon and open the menu. Right-click on the name of your network connection and select Show Estimated Data Usage. It’s that easy.

Tip #4: Mac data matters, too

Not a PC user? No problem! There’s a simple way to check your data usage on a Mac, too. Open up the Activity Monitor. While there, click on the Network tab to see current data usage and determine which apps and programs are hogging the most. See? Not difficult at all!

Tip #5: Check your router directly for in-home data usage

While we can’t give you an exact sports-style play-by-play for this option, you can check your in-home router box to determine how much data you’re using each month. Each manufacturer is a little different, so it pays to review your user manual to determine exactly how to do this for your particular unit.

However, most new routers offer not only a record of what you’ve used, they also provide the choice to cap the amount of data each device is using. For example, you can block your teen from streaming thirty-seven hours of the latest pop tunes or limit your husband’s streaming of the entire football season on the family television. (But, shhh… We didn’t tell you to do that!)

Tip #6: Download an external app or software

If you’re having trouble with the above suggestions, never fear! There are plenty of paid apps and software programs on the market that help you track your data usage. Some even provide the option to add limits or set warnings when you are getting close to your maximum. This is a good way to give yourself a reminder when you think you’re getting close, but there’s still half a season of your favourite reality show to binge watch.

Of course, be a little cautious with this suggestion. There’s a ton of malware out there that poses as reputable software for tracking data usage. Be smart and look for reviews. And only utilize reputable vendors through official channels, like the App Store or other similar markets.

Tip #7: Switch to a carrier who doesn’t care about your data usage!

Perhaps the easiest way to track your data usage is to switch to a carrier who doesn’t care how much you use each month. MATE knows you crave fast, reliable service with no hassle. That’s why we offer unlimited data on all of our no-contract plans. Plus, we have Australian-based customer service. Imagine… streaming, surfing, chatting, and browsing on your terms! What’s not to love about that.

Internet service providers are constantly trying to improve their network speeds to lure customers into faster data plans. But sometimes these faster plans come with restrictions — the dreaded metered internet connections, enforcing a limit on the amount of data you can send and receive.

If you find yourself in such an unfortunate situation, it will be critical for you to monitor your network data usage regularly. Thankfully, Windows 10 includes tools to monitor network usage to prevent you going over your data cap.

In Windows 10 there are two different ways to monitor the data that apps can send and receive in a given month, and in this Windows 10 guide, we’ll show you how you can monitor your network usage using the Settings app and Task Manager, and their pros and cons.

How to check network usage with Task Manager

Right-click the taskbar, and click Task Manager.

If you see the smaller version of the Task Manager, click the More details button on the bottom left corner.

    Click the App history tab.

In this section, you’ll see the date since Windows 10 began monitoring the data usage on your apps. You can also click the Delete usage history link to reset the data usage counter, but remember that it’ll also reset automatically every 30 days.

The data that is more usable to you is the Network column which tracks the data usage for your apps. You’ll also see the “Metered network” column, but this information is irrelevant unless you configure your Wi-Fi connection as metered.

Oddly enough, the problem with the App history tab is that it only tracks Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, you can’t view network usage for desktop applications, such as Chrome, the desktop version of Office apps, and others.

How to check network usage with Settings

    1. Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app.
    2. Click Network & internet.

Click Data usage. Under Overview, you’ll see the total data usage from the last 30 days for Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.

Click the Usage details link to view network data usage for all your applications installed on your computer.

The biggest advantage of the Settings app is that you can not only view Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, but you can also see data usage for traditional desktop applications.

However, the Usage details page shows only the total network data usage, and unlike the Task Manager, you can’t view metered network usage, tile updates, or CPU time information. In addition, this view won’t give you the option to reset the usage history or since the date when the data usage is being tracked.

As you can see, there are pros and cons with either tool, but you should consider using both to have a complete overview of which apps are using the most data and help you to manage your metered internet connection plan better. Of course, if these tools aren’t enough, you can always find different software solutions online, or in some cases, you can configure your router to monitor your data usage — just to name a few.

These 10 apps are must-haves apps for any new Windows PC

You just purchased a new PC and set it up, and now you’re looking for some great apps. Look no further. These are the best apps for your new Windows 10 PC.

Keep track of your data usage on your Windows device by following the instructions here.

Customers with home editions of Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 are able to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. However, customers are advised that the upgrade requires approximately 3GB of data usage which will be deducted from your monthly quota unless the download is performed during the overnight off-peak period from midnight to 6 AM.

How big is the Windows 10 upgrade?

At present the Windows 10 upgrade is about 3 GB in size. Further updates may be required after the upgrade is complete, for example to install additional Windows security updates or applications that need updating for Windows 10 compatibility.

    Managing Windows 10 updates

Unlike earlier versions of Windows, it’s not possible to disable automatic updates received from Microsoft. This is accepted in the end user license agreement presented when installing Windows 10.

We recommend that customers set their home WiFi connection as a “metered” connection which will prevent unexpected data usage from occurring. Windows includes a built-in “Data Usage” tool by default which will show how much data the computer has used and which application or service is responsible.

We also recommend customers disable the Windows feature for sharing updates with other computers outside of your local network as this will incur data usage charges if updates are uploaded to a machine outside of your home network. It is fine to send updates to devices on your local network and is recommended as a way to reduce your internet use if you have multiple machines.

Setting your WiFi connection as metered

We recommend you set your home WiFi network to “metered” as follows:

    1. Click on the WiFi network icon on the task bar and click the “Properties” link for your network.

    2. Switch on “Set as metered connection”.

    Update Delivery

Windows 10 can source updates from other PCs in addition to Microsoft itself. This can speed up downloads and reduce internet use, however we recommend you only allow your PC to share updates with other machines on your home network. This behaviour can be configured under “Update & Security” from the settings window as follows:

Daily internet usage on smartphones is easy with its built-in features. But what about PC internet usage? Especially when you have a daily limit and want to control the site visits.

    Ways to monitor internet usage

Internet usage can be monitored on PC too. After the use of Wi-Fi, network usage monitoring apps are frequently used. There basically two ways to monitor network usage.

    1. Built-in feature
    2. Data monitoring software

    1. Built-in feature

Systems built-in feature is the best answer for this. Most of the Windows OS (Windows 8, 8.1, 10) have an inbuilt feature which lets you see the daily data usages.

Network and internet settings on Windows 10 will show you data usage. It is very easy to set it. But Windows 8 has no setting visible as in Windows 10.

    Monitor internet usage on Win10

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

    • Use Windows + I key to open the Settings app
    • Click Network & Internet
    • Now click to Data Usage
    • Click the Usage detail link to see the network data usage for all your applications.

    Monitor internet usage on Win8

Windows 8 has no options like in Win10 but it has data usage monitor built-in. So not need to look for other third-party software unless you require some extra features.

First of all, you have to activate the monitoring by choosing set as metered connection and then choose to show estimated data usage.

How to see your estimated data usage in windows 8

    • Use Windows + I key to open the settings app or use the mouse pointer to the corner.
    • Now use right-click on the network (here Wi-Fi connection named Wall-Spot).
    • Then click on Set as metered connection.
    • Again click to the connected network.
    • Then click on Show estimated data usage.

And the total data usage will be displayed below it. Reset every day to see the daily usage as shown in the below image.

    2. Data monitoring software

There are a lot of applications that are available which does the same as the built-in features. If your computer does not support it or you have different needs along with daily internet usage like firewall, data limit per day internet speed you need to move for other software.

Windows store does have some similar software you can install it. Before installing them you need to first add your device to the MSN account.

    Glasswire

Here is one free software that does a petty good job in this. A modern firewall and network monitor. Free for data monitoring and speed check. You can check the data used by apps and also disable it.
