How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

Text messages serve as a handy historical record of conversations we have with others, including major events, links we share, or otherwise. Few realize that you can easily search through your entire text message history on the iPhone, which may help you in a pinch. Here’s how.

Search Limitations

Before you start your search, know that you can only search through text messages saved as conversations within the Messages app on your iPhone. This applies to both messages sent over SMS and iMessage. If you have deleted or cleared conversations within Messages in the past, they will not be searchable.

If you’ve synced your messages to an iPad using iCloud, you can even search your message history on and iPad.

But if you have ample history available—and many people have conversations stretching back years—then you’ll have plenty to search through. There are two main ways to do it.

How to Search for Text Messages with the Messages App

The best way to search through your text message history is using the Messages app. You’ll be able to quickly see the most results and browse through them easily.

First, open the Messages app. If you are in a Conversation view, press the back arrow until you are on the main “Messages” screen.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

Tap on the Search bar near the top of the screen, then type what you’d like to search for. The screen will change into a list of top Conversations that match your search.

If you’d like to see more results, tap “See All.” Or if you’d like to see a result closely, tap on the conversation, and you will be taken to that position in your conversation history.

At any time you can tap on the back arrow and review the other search results, or you can clear the search bar and search for something else.

How to Search Your Text Messages with Spotlight

You can also search through your text message history using Spotlight Search. To open Spotlight, go to the Home screen and swipe downward from the middle of the screen with one finger.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

In the search bar, type what you’d like to find in your text messages.

Search results from many different apps will appear on the screen (unless you’ve turned them off in Settings). Scroll through them until you find the Messages section. Below that, you will see relevant search results from your text messages.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

If you’d like, you can tap on the result to be taken to the conversation in the Messages app.

If Messages do not appear on your Spotlight search results, open Settings and navigate to “Siri & Search,” then scroll down to the Messages app in the list and tap on it. In the section labeled “In Search,” tap on the “Show In Search” option until the switch is turned on.

After that, your Messages results should show up in Spotlight Search again. Have fun combing through history!

If you’ve ever spent more than a minute searching for a specific message on your iPhone, you’re doing it all wrong.

The easiest options to search for messages containing a specific phrase are iOS’s Spotlight and Search features. You can easily access these through the Messages app and from your iPhone’s home screen.

Did you know the Messages app has a Search function for iPhone and iPad? Many people don’t realize that you can easily search through iMessages and text messages on the iPhone, you’ll be able to quickly find messages by name, word, phrase, or other search terms.

iOS Message search is fast and easy to use, but like many other iOS features it’s a little hidden so don’t be surprised if you have never seen it before. This guide will show you who to use the Messages search feature for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

How to Search Messages on iPhone

Messages search will look through and find all matching iMessages and text messages on an iPhone or iPad, here’s how this works:

Open the “Messages” app on iPhone or iPad

From the message thread screen, tap and hold on a message then pull down on the screen to reveal the hidden “Search” bar

Tap into the Search bar and type the term, name, or word to search messages for

Matching messages, conversations, and threads will appear below, tap any of them to open the matching message for the searched term

Clearing out the search box will make the message thread screen appear as usual, and you can pull down from the messages screen to search at any time.

You must be searching from the general iOS Messages thread screen, you can not search from within individual message conversations or threads, the search box is only available in the general Messages app screen.

Being able to find matching messages, words, and phrases in Messages is really useful, so if you’re trying to remember what someone said a few months ago, or what a particular topic or answer was, or what a recommendation was, or anything else, you can easily find out just by searching for something for a match. Currently the Messages app does not have an ability to search photos or pictures, but because image search exists in iOS it wouldn’t be surprising to see that feature introduced to Messages too. Note this is completely different from the ability to search for gifs in iOS Messages or the other various sticker features that have their own search functions.

The Messages Search feature could be a little easier to find, and it’s not entirely clear why it’s hidden the way it is, but much of modern iOS requires user discovery in ways that are less than obvious. But as many other iOS features, this one is helpful and handy, once you know that it exists anyway.

If you’re an iPhone user, your go-to texting app is likely the iMessage. It’s an incredibly useful, built-in iOS app with versatile functionality. Whether you’re using iMessage on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can store as many messages as you want. But this might mean you have thousands of messages on your iPhone.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

So, how do you search for a particular message in iMessage, especially within a single conversation? Until recently, Apple didn’t offer much of a solution, but now there are a few ways you can find exactly what you’re looking for in an iMessage conversation.

Can You Search Within a Single iMessage Conversation?

Some people are quick to delete entire iMessage conversations, especially if it’s inactive or an issue has been resolved. Others choose to keep every conversation they’ve ever had on iMessage and other texting apps.

Keeping messages is a good idea if you know they contain an essential piece of information. For example, the message may contain important contact details, but you haven’t saved them yet.

Searching through specific conversations within iMessage can yield the result you need. However, on iOS devices, you don’t have the option of opening a single conversation in iMessage and searching through it. Therefore, you need to try another route to get the result you need.

How to Search iMessage With Specific Keywords

The search feature in iMessage is sufficiently intuitive and practical. When you want to find specific information, you can use the search bar within the iMessage conversation list.

The search bar is not always visible, so you might need to swipe down to make it appear. Let’s say you want to check information around the Christmas plans you had with a family member. Here’s how you can find the answer you need:

  1. Access the search bar in the Conversation view in iMessage.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  2. Enter the keyword “Christmas.”
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  3. The iMessage app will show the last three messages containing the word “Christmas.” If none of them offer the result you want, tap on “See all” to view more. Also, you will see contacts, photos, and links that contain the same keyword.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

The messages containing the word “Christmas” will be listed chronologically and by contacts. So, you might see various names listed, but you can follow the date and time stamp to find the one you need.

When you see it, tap on the message, and that conversation will open to show more information. Naturally, the more specific the keyword, the easier the search will be. Keep in mind, this option is only available on iOS 13 and above.

How to Search iMessage Conversations With Spotlight

There is another quick way to find the part of the conversation in iMessage: Spotlight. It’s a built-in search feature every iOS device has and works with Siri. It also makes searching through iMessage a straightforward process. Here’s how to use it:

  1. To access Spotlight, swipe down from your iPhone or iPad home screen.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  2. At the very top of the screen, you’ll see a search bar. Enter the keyword and tap on “Search.”
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  3. Spotlight will likely list many results from iMessage and the web, as well as other apps on your phone.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

If your search is specific enough, you’ll likely find what you need relatively quickly. Using Spotlight is especially useful if you’re not sure if the information you’re looking for was sent or received via iMessage.

If Spotlight doesn’t show results for the iMessage app, what you’re looking for may be in another text messaging app on your device. Another possibility is that the message or message thread you’re looking for has already been deleted.

How Far Back Can You Search for iMessage Conversations

One of the best features available for Apple users is iCloud storage. Having access to iCloud means that you can retrieve all your contacts, photos, and iMessage conversations so long as they were backed up first. To ensure all your messages are saved:

  1. Go to Settings and then tap on your Apple ID.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  2. Select iCloud and then turn on the “Messages” button.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

However, if this feature is not turned on, you can only search for the messages on your phone. This might make you wonder how far back in time can you actually search.

That entirely depends on the current settings on your device. You can save your messages for 30 days, one year, or eternity.

If your storage space allows it, keeping messages forever might not be an issue. But some people choose a different approach. To check how long your messages are stored:

  1. Go to Settings and then select “Messages.”
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  2. Select “Keep Messages” under the Message History section.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  3. Choose the settings that work best for you.

Finding the Right Words Quickly

Scrolling through a single conversation to find specific information can be a time-consuming and tedious task. This is especially problematic if it’s an iMessage conversation with a person you communicate with a lot, and your threads are very long.

The same applies to group messages where you might not be sure who wrote what. With the right keyword, searching through messages on your Apple devices is a quick process.

The search feature within the app shows results chronologically. If you have a good idea of when something was written, it’s an easy search. Unfortunately, searching within a single conversation is impossible, but you can also use the Spotlight search to narrow down the possibilities.

What do you usually have to search for in the messaging apps? Let us know in the comments section below.

Many of us get so many different text messages over a few weeks or months that it can almost be impossible to find a particular part of a conversation. We could spend hours scrolling and scrolling through messages trying to find it, and never even get close. But what if we told you there was a better way?

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

Gone are the days of having to manually search through your text and iMessages. Now, there are a number of different ways to automatically search through your messages and only spend seconds doing something that would’ve taken you hours in the past.

In total, there are a couple of different ways to search through your messages on the iPhone. The first way is to directly go into the messages app and search for them. If you have accidentally deleted the message or messages that you wanted to search for, there is even a way to do that (but it will involve the use of a third-party piece of computer software). Without any further ado, let’s take a closer look at these three methods.

Searching Messages Directly in the Messages App

This is the easiest way to sift through your texts. The search option is native to the messaging app so you won’t need any third-party services and it will search your entire history. All you need to perform the following steps is your phone and a keyword.

To search for specific texts, do this:

  1. Tap the Messages app on your home screen.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  2. Once you are in the main messages app (not in a conversation), simply swiping your finger down will expose a search box at the top of the screen.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  3. Enter the keyword(s) that you are looking for in the box and then messages that contain that word or phrase will be shown.
How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad
  4. Once you click on the conversation that features the message, it will take you directly to that message and highlight it.

Keep in mind, you can search by the users’ contact name or any keyword. For example, if you’re searching for an address but have no idea of any of the keywords try searching for ‘Street,’ ‘Avenue,’ or even the name of the city. Scroll through the list that appears and tap on the option that closely matches the one you’re looking for.

Searching For Deleted Messages

If the conversations containing the messages you want to look for have been deleted, things get a little bit more difficult. But, you aren’t completely out of luck. In this section we’ll walk you through the steps to search for deleted messages.

The first place you’ll want to look is your other Apple devices. Whether it’s an iPad, an old iPhone, a Mac device, or even an Apple Watch, that’s where we’ll start. A lot of times when you delete a message on your iPhone it is still on another device. Simply open the texting application on any of these devices for your missing texts.

Next, we can check if your messages are backed up to the iCloud (unfortunately, you can’t see the actual texts without doing an iCloud restoral). Open your iPhone and tap on ‘Settings.’ Then, tap on your name at the top, and finally, tap on iCloud. Scroll down and look for the ‘Messages’ option. If your Messages are turned on, it may be worth performing a factory reset and restoring your last iCloud backup. But, this is still a little risky because you may lose some other important piece of information.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

Lastly, you can look into third-party software that helps users retrieve deleted messages. This will require you to download and use a computer program. There are many different ones available such as FoneDog and Dr. Fone. Download the program and follow the prompts to eventually find your old messages. See, when we delete messages off of our phone, they actually stay on the phone for a while longer in the background, until space is needed.

Just be wary of which software you choose to use. Many websites promise to deliver results and most charge a fee for the service. You’ll also need to grant the software access to all of your information. Before you try one, be sure to read the reviews and check for a money-back guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apple is known for its simple and user-friendly interface. But, there’s always something new to learn. If you still have questions, keep reading.

How do I search for texts on a Mac?

The instructions for your iOS and macOS devices are pretty much the same as those we’ve listed above. If you have a Mac and you want to search for messages simply open the text app on your computer and use the search bar to type in keywords.

Unfortunately, unlike mobile devices, macOS doesn’t give us a preview of the message so you’ll have to click on each contact until you find the right one. Unless, of course, you know which contact sent you the message you’re looking for.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

How do I copy messages on an iPhone?

Once you’ve found the message you’re looking for you may want to save it to your Notes or send it to a friend. Fortunately, this is simple. From your iPhone, long-press the text and tap ‘Copy.’ Then, head to a new text, your Notes, or wherever you’d like to store the message and long-press anywhere in a blank space to select ‘Paste.’

There are a few things you can do other than copying and pasting the text too. For example, if you want to forward the message to another user simple long-press it then tap ‘More.’ A small arrow icon will appear in the lower right-hand corner. Tap it and select the email or contact for where you’d like to send it.

Can I save a text message on my iPhone?

Unfortunately, there is no way to save a message directly. Having an option to favorite or star a text would be great, we just haven’t come that far in 2021. But, you can forward the message, you can copy, paste, and save the message in your notes, or take a screenshot and save it in your Photos app.

You can save messages in your iCloud by toggling the switch under ‘iCloud’ in Settings (as shown above).

So there you have it, by using one of these three methods, you should have no problem whatsoever trying to find old messages and conversations with ease. It is also a good idea to do your best to not delete messages, as the process to discover and search through deleted messages takes quite a bit longer, as you can see. Saving screenshots of important information and messages is also another way to help you avoid the entire text message search process altogether.

While it’s surprisingly bad, you can sometimes find messages in a message thread simply by searching for it. The Messages app can get really messy, especially with group messages going on. This can make it near impossible to find the message you were looking for. Follow along to learn how to search in the Messages app on iPhone.

How to search in the Messages app on iPhone

Many will reply to messages simply by tapping on its notification. This means that you’re almost never on the main conversations view that lists every conversation you’ve ever had. What most may not know is that you can do a quick search, which will search through all your message threads for a specific keyword.

  1. Go into the main conversations view.
  2. Swipe down anywhere in the conversations view. A search menu will appear.
  3. Tap on the search bar and search for what you’re looking for.

Unfortunately, searching in the Messages app is not the best experience. Not only does it take forever most of the time, but you’ll also need to be very careful with your keywords, especially with phrases. Messages is searching for the specific word or phrase you’re asking it to look for.

For example, searching “I am here” may not show any results if the specific keyword was “here I am”. Messages search will also only apply to the last known instance of the word. So, searching for “Apple” in a thread that talks a lot about Apple products will only show you the most recent message that contains that word.

Need to find an old message in iMessage? You’ll need to learn how to search inside your text messages to find it – here’s how it is done…

Finding a specific message inside Apple’s iMessage – on either you iPhone or iPad – is actually really simple. It is super-useful too. All you need to know or have is a specific “keyword” or “phrase” in mind.

If you know that, you can search your entire iMessage history.

And there are a couple of ways to mine your text messages for information; the first uses iMessage’s built in search functionality, and the second uses iOS’ native Spotlight Search.

Let’s look at how you search for text messages with iMessage using iMessage’s built in search functionality first, as this is the easiest and most reliable method.

Method #1) How To Search For Specific Text Messages Inside iMessage

You’ll first need to open the iMessage app. Once you’ve done this, you’ll want to go to the main screen where all of your conversations are listed. From here, simply enter your search term in the search bar and hit enter.

Example: say you want to search for “thanksgiving”, enter the term thanksgiving into the search bar and hit enter on your keyboard. iMessage will now list all of conversations that mention thanksgiving.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

iMessage will automatically show the most recent first, but if you want to see ALL the messages that contain this phrase simply tap SEE ALL and it will display everything, going right back to when you first started using your iPhone.

Pretty simple, right? If you want to get more specific, you can – as I noted in the introduction, all you need is a phrase or a keyword. Just enter it and iOS will extract all of your text messages that contain that specific keyword or phrase.

Method #2) Using Spotlight To Search Inside Text Messages

iOS has a built in search engine; it’s called Spotlight and you can use it to find pretty much anything on your iPhone, including specific text messages and/or specific content from certain text messages.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

To access Spotlight on iPhone, go to your home screen and drag down with one finger from the middle of the screen.

This will open Spotlight, complete with a search box.

Enter the phrase you want to find, hit enter, and Spotlight will then pull up EVERYTHING on your phone that relates to that phrase, including text messages.

As I noted earlier, Spotlight is great for finding stuff on your phone, from files to downloads and media, but if you’re after specific text messages, I would use the iMessage method (method #1) as it is more focussed and it makes it easier to find what you’re looking for as you’re only dealing with text messages.

Text Messages Not Appearing in Spotlight?

This can happen. All it means is that Messages search functionality isn’t enabled. This is an easy fix though; just go to Settings > Siri & Search > Messages App > Turn on Show In Search.

Once this setting is switched on, you’ll be able to use Spotlight to search for text messages on your phone.

Spotlight is great for quickly finding old messages from specific contacts. For instance, say you have an old friend that you haven’t messaged for years. With Spotlight search on iPhone, all you’d have to do is enter his/her name and it will pull in all of their messages.

This saves you from opening iMessage and scrolling through endless conversations until you find your old conversation with them.

Searching inside iMessage itself, using its built in search functionality, is best for quickly finding text messages that mention certain phrases.

For instance, say you want to find a message that mentions something super-specific, or a tip you gave someone, just enter the main keyword and/or phrase and it will quickly find all the instances of where it is mentioned.

And because you can search through your entire text message history, you can effectively pull data and find things from years and years ago.

This is a super-handy feature to have at your disposal, and with the above-listed tips on how find specific text messages or topics in iMessage, you can quickly mine gigabytes of text messages in mere seconds.

Search Limitations & Things To Keep In Mind

Obviously, if you have deleted a message – or a message thread – the data will no longer be available. This is one of the reasons why you should never delete conversation threads. You never know when you might need to refer back to them.

How To Search iMessage Text Messages on iPad

Yes, if you have iMessage set up on iPad, your iPhone iMessage app will sync with your iPhone, so you can manage and respond to text messages that are sent to your iPhone on your iPad.

iMessage also runs on MacBooks and iMac, so you can do all of the above search and find functions on these two. Although you will need to have these set up properly using iCloud.

The process is exactly the same as well – just use the built-in search functionality of iMessage to isolate and find text messages and specific subject/topics/keywords that you have discussed with your contacts.

You mean spotlight on my ipad? When I try nothing shows up, maybe because it’s so old? I’d like to just look at that specific day. I thought some apps did this but I don’t know what they’re called or anything

Feb 18, 2014 6:47 PM

So really just any app would be fine

Feb 18, 2014 6:56 PM

The iPhone (iOS Device) and the Mac will only Sync from the day that both start using the same App ID or OS X 10.8.2 whichever is the earlier.

The “Sync” as Apple calls it was different before this time.

The “Sync” is only “Display on all Devices” and does not involve anything else (if you delete a message on one device it remains on the other)

The iMessages are “pushed” at the devices that have the Apple ID or iPhone number and when the iMessages has been sent that is it.

It will not re-sync if you remove the iMessage.

I really don’t use iMessages on my iPhone enough to even try “Load earlier Messages”.

If you have synced (Backup) the iPhone onto the Mac using iTunes it is apparently possible to extract the messages from the Backup.

However I don’t sync this way and don’t know the names of the apps involved.

Apple’s Messages app offers one of the most convenient ways of having a text-based conversation with your contacts on iPhone and iPad, but messages aren’t the only things you can send and receive. Apple’s iMessage service enables all manner of files and attachments to be shared, such as photos, links, documents, audio messages, and more.

Files that are sent to you can of course be accessed directly from within a message thread, but you don’t have to go scrolling through hundreds of messages to find that file that was sent to you a while ago. Apple also provides a way to see every file that has been sent to you in a chat thread in one easily accessible location, where you can also save those files for later reference if you wish.

Follow the steps below to save files and attachments that have been sent to you over Messages.

  1. Launch the native Messages app on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.
  2. Open a conversation, then tap the contact bubble(s) at the top of the screen.
  3. From the menu that expands, tap the info button (the “i” icon) to view more information about the conversation.
  • Scroll down to the attachment sections, where you’ll find all the files that have been sent to you in the course of the conversation. (These sections are conveniently subdivided into file types, such as Photos and Documents.) Tap See All if necessary, then tap the file that you’re interested in to view it.
  • Now, select the Actions icon (the square with an arrow pointing out) in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  • Scroll down to the Actions menu and select Save to Files to navigate to a folder on your iCloud Drive or your device.
  • Finally, tap Save in the top-right corner of the screen to save the file in your chosen location.
  • That’s all there is to it. Of course, the Actions menu includes other options that you might prefer to use depending on the file type. If it’s a photo you want to save, you might choose Add to Album to save it to your iCloud Photos, for example. The choice is yours.

If you keep lots of old text messages on our iPhones or iPad, here’s what you can do to find your old messages when you need them.

Unless you run low on space, you probably use the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad like an unlimited cache of conversations. There’s only one small hitch: how to find old text messages on iPhone when there are thousands of them.

Here are two simple ways to quickly get to the message you want in iOS.

How to See Old Messages on an iPhone With the Hidden Scroll

Scrolling can become tiresome after a few vertical swipes along the screen. A faster navigation method is to tap at the top of the screen and let it instantly scroll a few messages at a time.

    1. Open the Messages app in iOS and select the conversation you want to view.
    2. Now tap once near the clock (or on either side of the camera notch) at the top of your iPhone or iPad screen.

It’ll take a lot of tapping on the top of the iMessage screen to take you back in time to the beginning of the message thread. But it’s more comfortable than swiping to scroll, which gets frustrating quickly.

Tip: This method works on every app on iOS.

But is there a faster way to reach that old message on your iPhone that doesn’t involve scrolling?

How to Look Up Old Messages on an iPhone With the Search Bar

You can see old messages on your iPhone if you remember any words someone used in it. This is the fastest way to scroll to the top or anywhere on your iPhone and can give your fingers some rest.

    1. Go to the Messages app.
    2. Find the Search bar on the main screen with all the conversation threads. You may need to drag down from the middle of the screen to make it appear.
    3. Type the words you remember in the search bar or use your voice with a tap on the mic.

This method only works if you remember part of the original message. So try a few variations of different search terms. If this fails, you’ll have to fall back on the cumbersome scrolling method.

Find Old Text Messages on Your iPhone Anytime

Also, you can only find an old message if you haven’t deleted it from the Messages app already. If you have, you need to look into the different ways to recover deleted text messages on your iPhone instead.

Wondering how to recover deleted text messages on iPhone? You might be able to restore them from a backup.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

Apple’s iOS 15 is now available in public beta, which means that today you can try out all the biggest features coming to the iPhone this fall. That includes Live Text, the most technically impressive feature in the update, which allows you to pull text, email addresses, phone numbers, and more from pictures.

Live Text works with both handwritten and typed text, and supports English, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Portuguese, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. It’s also important to remember that iOS 15 is still in beta, which means that Apple could tweak or change how Live Text works in the months to come.

Live Text works in a few different ways on iOS, depending on what you’re trying to use it for and where in the OS you are. Here are all the different ways you can use it:

    With text fields

The new “Text from Camera” option in the text select menu.

How to search within text messages on iphone or ipad

How Live Text works when importing text directly into a messaging field.

The most powerful — and useful — way to use Live Text is with virtually any text field on iOS. Whether you’re writing a text message to a friend, an email, or something in the notes app, you can add text that you copied from an image.

Once you’ve got the text you want (see below), tapping on the text field (as you would when accessing the pop-up select / copy / paste menu that’s been on iOS for years) brings up an additional option: text from camera.

Tapping that new button will bring up a smaller camera window, which you can point at any block of text. iOS will then highlight the block of text it’s selecting, and you can drop it in just by hitting the “insert” button.

(You might want to proofread things, of course, before you send or post it — Live Text is pretty good, but its not perfect, especially when working with handwritten text.)

    In the camera app

If you have an iPhone XS or newer, you can also use Live Text directly in the camera app in real time. Just open the camera app and tap the live text button that appears in the corner of the viewfinder (it’ll pop up contextually when you’re pointing it at text) to grab text that you can then copy and paste. You can also interact with it directly in the case of phone numbers, email addresses, and links.

    In Photos

If you’re viewing any pictures with text in them in the Photos app, you can select and interact with text there. It works just like selecting actual text anywhere else on iOS: tap and hold on the text in an image and you’ll see the familiar-looking blue highlights pop up.

    2. While viewing the Messages list, swipe down with your finger to expose the search box.

In this regard, Can you go back to a certain date on iMessage? Is there a way to go back to a specific date of messages and then read from that date on? No. You might also want to consider an application such as PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac or Windows). They allow you to archive your messages to either a PDF or text file, both of which are easily searchable.

Correspondingly, How can I view old text messages on my iPhone without scrolling?

    1. Tap anywhere in the marked area to scroll to the top of the conversation quickly.
    2. Tap anywhere in the marked areas on your iPhone notch to scroll up.
    3. Wait for the progress indicator to go away before scrolling to top again.
    4. Tap on the Search Bar to start a search in Messages.

    1. Open Messages.
    2. Drag your finger downwards across the middle ofyour screen to reveal a search bar.
    3. Tap the Search Bar and type in keywords from the message, or the name of someone in the conversation.
    4. Tap Search.

Likewise, How do I see Imessages by date? Spotlight will list the messages it found in that date range, and when you select one of them and press ⌘R. it will open the Messages app to that message. You can hover your mouse pointer over a given message, and the date of the message will float above it. Brilliant.Open the Messages app > Tap on the message thread of the person you want to see the first iMessage sent from > Tap on the time stamp at the top of your display and you‘ll be taken to the first message. This trick also works to get you back to your most recent message threads if you have scrolled down.

    Q. On a desktop browser, you can press Control + F to get a search box so you can look for a specific word or phrases on a page, but how do you do that on a mobile browser where keyboard commands don’t really work?

    A. Given the lack of keyboards (and sometimes, screen space), mobile operating systems usually tuck common commands into menus or under icons. Once you locate the “Search on This Page” command, the onscreen keyboard should appear so you can type in your keywords.

On an Android phone or tablet running a recent version of Google’s Chrome browser, tap the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the window; the menu looks like three dots stacked up. When the menu opens, select “Find in Page” option and type in your search words with the keyboard. The browser highlights each instance on the page where the keywords appear. Tap the arrow icon in the search box to jump to each highlighted word.

The steps are the same for iOS devices using the Chrome browser. For those using Apple’s Safari browser on their iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch media players, tap the “Share” icon on the edge of the screen; the icon looks like a box with an arrow sprouting out of it. When the screen of icons appears, swipe along the bottom row until you see the “Find on Page” icon with the magnifying glass icon.

Tap the icon and use the keyboard to enter your search terms. The iOS Safari browser automatically takes you to the first time the word appears on the page. Tap the down or up arrows next to the search bar to advance to the next occurrence of the word or to go back to the previous place it appeared.

Apple’s iOS 15 brings a major feature to the camera and it is called ‘Live Text’. Here’s how it works on the iPhone, iPad.

Apple’s iOS 15 brings a major feature to the camera and it is called ‘Live Text’. This feature is similar to how Google Lens works on Android phones, and on the Google Search and Photos app on iOS. With Live Text, iOS will now recognise any text in a photo, screenshot, or camera preview thanks to the optical character recognition (OCR) allowing Apple to extract text from any image.

Users can now copy and paste, lookup or translate the text in photos, screenshots. Live Text works in Photos, Screenshot, Quick Look, and Safari and in live previews with Camera. It is a system-wide implementation and will appear in all other apps, when you copy-past text. Here’s a detailed look at Live Text.

    What is Live Text?

As pointed out, this is similar to how Google Lens works, where one can point the camera at an image or a book, or a business card. Live Text can then recognise useful information in photos or online images, be it a phone number or an email id.

One can also use the Live Text feature in the Camera app by pointing the device camera at a photo or image with text, and then tapping the indicator icon. From here, users will get options to either copy-paste the text, look it up or translate or even make a call, in a case of a phone number. Apple’s system is smart enough to recognise the text it is extracting.

    What devices support Live Text?

But Apple is not rolling out Live Text for all iPhones which are running iOS 15. Users will need an iPhone Xs, iPhone XR or later with iOS 15 to run this. All iPhones with A12 Bionic chipset or later can support this. The Live Text currently supports English, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Spanish languages.

How to turn on Live Text?

To turn on Live Text in the Camera app, go to Settings and then scroll down to Camera.

You will see an option for ‘Live Text’. Make sure the toggle is on.

In order to turn on Live Text for all supported languages, go to Settings > General > Language & Region, and enable Live Text.

How to use Live to copy the text inside a photo or image

Open the Photos app, and select a picture that has written text in it. A screenshot with text will work great here.

Touch and hold a word and move the grab points to adjust the selection. Apple will automatically detect there is some text here, and allow users to copy-paste, etc. To highlight all text inside the photo, tap the indicator icon in the lower-right corner of the photo. The icon is similar to a little notepad.

A menu should pop up with options to copy-paste, look, select all, etc for the text. If you want to copy the text, just select all the text in the photo, and copy it. You can now paste it into another app and send it to others.

The same also works on Safari, if you open an image that has text in it. Just make sure that the text is clearly visible.

Make a call or send an email with Live Text

Live Text will also let users make a call or send an email if the image has such details. Open a photo that has such details. It could be a screenshot of a contact card that someone sent you.

Just tap on the phone number or email address.

The menu should give an option to either Call or Send a message to the mobile number.

And Apple says that “depending on the photo, image, or website, you might also see an option to Make a FaceTime call or Add to Contacts.”

While Live Text is certainly an interesting and much-needed addition to iOS 15, Apple has added plenty of new features for users, including some which are geared towards India users. Apple iOS 15 is compatible with all devices above iPhone 6s, including the original iPhone SE and the 2020 iPhone SE. The iPod Touch 7th generation is also supported.

The Messages app on the iPad makes it possible for you to send free text messages to contacts who use Apple devices. The Messages app maintains a history of your iMessages in reverse chronological order. They are automatically saved within the app. You can also save your Messages texts elsewhere if you want to make a backup or simply save text-based versions of your conversations. If you regularly want to back up or export messages, iTunes or iExplorer may work best for your needs. If you only want to save a few messages, you can do that in the Messages app.

    Forwarding From Messages

The Messages app has a built-in tool for forwarding text messages to your email account. Do this by selecting a conversation and tapping the “Edit” button in the corner of the screen. Select each message you want to save and then tap “Forward.” Enter your email address to send the messages. You can either leave them backed up in your inbox or download the text files to your computer.

    Syncing to Your Mac

If you use the same Apple ID on your iPad and your Mac and use Apple’s free iCloud service, the Messages app syncs between the two platforms. If you have trouble navigating your messages, the commercial Chatology app for your Mac can make searching your messages more efficient. While there are other third-party chat apps for OS X, such as Adium and Pidgin, they cannot sync with Messages on your iPad.

    Exporting via Backup Software

If you want a comprehensive file management program for your iPad’s contents, including Messages, consider installing an iPhone backup program on your computer. The iExplorer program for either Windows or OS X can create backups of your messages and view them within the program. You can also opt to export entire conversations in PDF, TXT or CSV formats. The CopyTrans software can save content from Messages as HTML, TXT, CSV, XLS or DOC files. The software iBackup Viewer, while written as an iPhone backup service, is also able to pull Messages content from your iPad.

Using an iTunes or iCloud Backup

If you only want a backup in case of emergencies, you can use iTunes or iCloud to create a backup file of your iPad content and settings — including content from Messages. If you have it set up, iTunes performs a backup every time you sync your iPad with your computer. ICloud handles backups automatically without connecting the iPad to your computer any time both devices are on the same network and the iPad is attached to a power supply. You set up iCloud backups in the “Settings” section on your iPad. These backups can be used to restore your iPad.

You are 60 seconds away from removing one of your phone’s most annoying annoyances.

Are you getting a ton of spam text messages? How annoying is it to be interrupted with a notification on your iPhone, only for it to be yet another junk message? Here’s a secret: you can make these go away using a feature already in iOS.

Here’s how you do it. First, open Settings. Scroll down and down and down until you find Messages. Tap it.

Next, scroll down and down and down until you find “Filter Unknown Messages.” This is the magic. Turn it on. You’ll have to scroll almost three pages to find this thing, but it’s worth it.

That’s it. Now, if you go into your messages app, you’ll see tabs at the top of the screen. On the left will be “Contacts & SMS” which will contain messages from known contacts in your address book. On the right will be the new “Unknown Senders” tab.

When you get a message from a sender not in your address book, you won’t get a notification. Instead, it will be dropped into this tab.

Warning: Once “Filter Unknown Senders” is enabled, it becomes very important to add all legitimate senders to your address book. Any message from a number not in your contacts will wind up in the Unknown Senders tab. If you’re expecting a text from someone you know, be sure to enter them into your address book. Otherwise, you’ll have to scan this list to see if there’s anything new you need to pay attention to.

Related warning: Gig workers from services like Door Dash, Uber Eats, and InstaCart often use rotating custom text message numbers to reach out to customers during the shopping or pickup process. If you’re expecting a delivery from one of these services, be sure to check your Unknown Senders tab during the delivery window.

This need for added diligence in certain cases is probably why the feature is turned off by default. For new iOS users with an empty contacts app, all messages will necessarily be from contacts not in the address book. That said, this is such a huge benefit it’s worth a little extra diligence to add contacts you want to be able to get text notifications from.

Text messages can be sent over a cellular network, while iMessages require an active internet connection. Read the story to know more about such differences between the two.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • iMessage service can be accessed only on Apple devices and the SMS service can be used on any device.

When cell phones were first introduced, there were only two things users could do – make phone calls and send messages or SMS using a cellular network.

Then came smartphones and internet connections that enabled users to send texts, photos and videos using the internet over the cellular network.

While WhatsApp is a universal choice for sending messages, iPhone users also use iMessages – Apple’s own instant messaging service.

    What are iMessages?

First and foremost, iMessage only works on Apple devices like iPhone, iPad or Mac. It is an instant messaging service that sends messages over the internet. Without a data connection or WiFi, iMessage does not work.

So, when an iPhone user has to send a text to another iPhone user, he/she can use either iMessage or text messages. But when a message has to be sent to a person using an Android phone, an iPhone user has to use the SMS service.

What are text messages or SMS?

SMS stands for Short Message Service. Although people still widely use the SMS service for sending texts, it was a very popular service when cell phones were first introduced. The SMS service is available for both Android and iOS users and requires a text message plan with the cellular carrier in order to send the messages.

How are text messages and iMessages different?

    – The most basic difference between an iMessage and a text message is that an iMessage is sent using an internet connection and the latter is delivered over a cellular network.

    – Another difference is that the iMessage service can be accessed only on Apple devices and the SMS service can be used on any device.

    – While iMessages sync with iCloud, it is difficult to create a backup for text messages.

    – On an iPhone, iMessages appear in blue bubbles while text messages appear in green bubbles.

    – iMessages come with support for features that text messages don’t. With iMessage, you can share your location, get read receipts and see whether someone is replying to your message or has started typing. It also enables you to send stickers, songs, animated GIFs, etc.

This is another follow-up article based on my previously published post describing the difference between a text message and an iMessage. The original article has been quite popular and has generated some additional questions. This article will address why text messages are delivered to an iPhone but not an iPad.

    SMS/MMS Text Messages

Traditional text messages are sent through the cellular provider. You can not send or receive regular SMS/MMS text messages on a device that is not connected to a cellular network. Even if your iPad is 3G or 4G capable, it can not send or receive traditional SMS text messages. Your cellular provider delivers text messages using the cellular control channel of your phone. The iPad does not have access to the cellular control channel in this manner.

This may seem odd because iMessages can be sent and received on both iPhones and iPads. That’s because iMessage works differently than regular text messages.

    Understanding iMessage Delivery

An iMessage can be delivered to an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or a Macintosh computer. This versatility is due to iMessage being related to your Apple ID. Any device that is setup to use your Apple ID is capable of sending or receiving iMessages. If you have an iPhone, the phone number is also associated with your Apple ID and all devices using the Apple ID can receive iMessages sent to your phone number.

When you send an iMessage, Apple will route that message through their servers using an Internet connection. This Internet connection can be either Wi-Fi or your cellular provider’s data network. This allows you to send iMessages from iPods, iPads, and Macintosh computers even without a traditional text messaging plan from a cellular provider.

Some people mistakenly think they have a text messaging problem because some messages appear on their iPhone and not their iPad. Usually, it is not a messaging problem, but rather they are seeing the difference in delivery between an iMessage and an SMS text message.

With the release of iOS 8.1, Apple has included a feature called Text Message Forwarding, which will forward SMS texts from the iPhone to the iPad. This allows SMS text messages to be sent and received in the Messages app on the iPad. This article provides additional information.

Sync iMessages Between Your iPhone and iPad

If iMessages are appearing on your iPhone but not on your iPad, you need to verify both devices are signed in to your Apple ID in the Messages settings. On each device, go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive and make sure the same Apple ID is used on both devices. If you see a button labeled “Use your Apple ID with iMessage”, this indicates your Apple ID is not currently being used for iMessage on that device. Sign in to your Apple ID to sync your iMessages between devices.

If you are signed in to your Apple ID in the Messages settings on both devices and iMessages are still not delivered to both devices, try resetting iMessage on both devices as described in this article.

Be sure to sign out of your Apple ID on both devices before signing back in on either device.

If you send someone a message from your iPhone, you want it to appear on your other devices, right? Of course you do, because you’re smart like that. If that isn’t happening for you, though, there are quite a few troubleshooting steps you could go through. Below, I’ve listed three things that have resolved the not-syncing problem most often for me, along with some resources from Apple to peruse if you still can’t get everything communicating properly. Happy troubleshooting, folks! Wait, is troubleshooting ever happy?

    1. Make sure you’re signed into your Apple ID on both your Mac and on your iOS devices. On your iPhone or iPad, you’ll visit Settings > Messages to check this; make sure the “iMessage” option is on at the top…

…but if you instead see something like “Use your Apple ID for iMessage,” touch that and log in with your Apple ID. (And the same thing applies if you see username/password fields—just log in.)

On your Mac, you’ll open the Messages program to get started, and if you find a login screen like the one below, again you’ll sign in with your Apple ID.

    2. Check to see that all of the addresses you can be reached at are the same. If you look under Messages > Preferences on your Mac and click on the “Accounts” tab, you’ll note that your iMessage account may have several email addresses and your phone number associated with it.

If you look on your iPhone and iPad within Settings > Messages > Send & Receive , those associated addresses (and the phone number, of course) should all be selected in exactly the same way. Note the checkmarks next to everything under “You can be reached by iMessage at”:

If you find that you’re allowing messages to be sent to a particular email address on your iPhone but that account is deselected on your Mac, for example, you’ll want to toggle it on within that Messages > Preferences > Accounts area.

If you don’t do so, this might mean that you’d see texts from someone on your iPhone but not your Mac if the sender was composing them to the email address in question. So just be certain every address you want to allow is selected on all of your devices, and you’re golden. If you’re still not convinced that everything is turned on correctly, you can of course read yet another Apple support article.

    3. If all else fails, turn it off and on again. Are you tired of hearing this? I’ll bet you are, but it gets repeated because it works, I swear. If all of your settings seem to be correct everywhere but texts still aren’t coming through, start by rebooting all of your devices. If that doesn’t work, sign out of Messages on your Mac (within Messages > Preferences > Accounts ); then do the same thing on your iPhone and iPad by visiting Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and tapping your Apple ID at the top to reveal a “Sign Out” option.

Then sign back in on all of your devices, make sure your settings are correct (including the “You can be reached at” choices), and have someone send you test messages to your phone number and to your associated email addresses. If everything comes to all of your devices, great!
