Up until a year ago, SkyDrive lacked an official desktop client and also had restrictions on the file size per upload. In April 2012, Microsoft decided to re-launch its cloud service by releasing a dedicated desktop client and has been improving the service since then. Now that SkyDrive has been completely reengineered and comes with apps for Windows and smartphones, sharing big files has become quite easy using it.

Using SkyDrive to Share Files

Step 1: Assuming that you already have an account on Microsoft SkyDrive, I would ask you to drag and drop the file you want to send into your SkyDrive folder. If you are planning to send multiple files contained in a folder, I would be better if you use an archive manager to zip all the files together and then upload it (maximum 300 MB). Though you can upload files to your SkyDrive account directly from web, if you are planning to upload large files I would suggest you use the desktop tool for the same.

Step 2: Now that you have uploaded the files to your SkyDrive account you can share these files using a computer or a smartphone (Android currently not supported).

We will see how things go on computer using a native browser. After the file is uploaded to your SkyDrive account, you will be able to see it on your Online SkyDrive File section in your web browser. Right-click on the file you want to share and select the Share option from the right-click context menu.

Step 3: You can now simply email the file to a contact with a message body. If you want to grant edit permissions to the recipient directly on your file on SkyDrive, check the Recipients can edit box and press the send button.

If you are planning to share the file on some forum or instant messenger, you can generate a link using the Get a link option and selecting the type of privacy option you want. Once the unique code is generated, you can share it wherever you like.

One thing I think is missing here is that you cannot change the link of a file once it is generated, which you may want to do in order to restrict the person from accessing the file after a certain time interval (I love this feature in Picasa while sharing photos).

If you are planning to share the file on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, there’s a direction option for that.

Cool Tip: Not only can you send big files using SkyDrive, but you can even receive them directly to your SkyDrive account. Just create a folder and while sharing it with your friend, select the Recipients can edit option. Your friends can then add files to the folder as long as they are a Windows live user, and you can access them directly on your computer, the one where you have the desktop app installed.

Use OneDrive in your browser

Select the app launcher icon , and then select OneDrive.

Upload files or folders to OneDrive

You can store over 300 types of files on OneDrive. With Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome:

Select Upload > Files or Upload > Folder.

Select the files or folder you want to upload.

Select Upload, select the files you want to upload, and select Open.

If you don’t see Upload > Folder, create a folder, and then upload the files to that folder.

Save a file to OneDrive

Select File > Save a Copy > OneDrive – Personal.

Select Enter file name here and type a name.

Alternatively, to save space on your PC instead, you can right-click and select “Free up space” to cloud-store the file only.

In Teams for personal and small business use, you have direct and easy access to everything in your OneDrive. Your OneDrive files remain private until you share them. You can change file permissions or stop sharing directly in OneDrive.

To access your OneDrive files, select the Files tab, then select OneDrive.

To share a file:

Select the Files tab.

Browse to the directory for the file you want to share.

To share a link to a OneDrive file:

Although it’s been less than a fortnight since the release of the Windows 11 Dev build, its widespread adoption via the Windows Insider Program and ISO leaks has catapulted Microsoft back to the spotlight.

There’s much that has remained the same, just as there’s much that’s changed. Sharing files and folders, for instance, is one department where Windows provides options galore to facilitate easy sharing and productivity between devices or over a network.

Here are all the ways that you can share a file or a folder on Windows 11.

How to share files via Windows Explorer

On Windows 11, users can share files via Windows Explorer itself. The ability to do so makes it much more convenient than it was before, and here are the three options that Windows provides to simplify sharing files with others and your linked devices.

To share via Windows Explorer, click on the file that you want to share and select Share on the toolbar above.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the file and select the Share option.

Now, you will have three options to choose from. Here they are:

How to share using Nearby sharing

The first option is to share your files via ‘Nearby Sharing’.

Here, you can select the drop-down menu to choose from ‘My Devices’ or ‘Everyone nearby’. Doing so will also turn on Nearby Sharing.

You will see the devices that have their Bluetooth and nearby sharing turned on. Select the device you want to share with and that’s it.

The receiver will get a notification on their device of the incoming file. Click on Save & open or Save.

How to share by Email

Using the ‘Email a contact‘ option, you can also simply email the file to a contact. To do so, from the share options, select the recipient under ‘Email a contact’. To find more contacts, click on Find more people.

Then choose your contact.

Now click on Send.

The file will be shared with them via email. If this is your first time using this option, you will be required to link an account with the ‘Peoples’ app to import contacts. To do so, click on Import contacts.

Choose your account and log in.

Once your contacts are uploaded, select the one that you want to share your file with.

How to share using an app

Using the ‘Share with app‘ option, The last option that you get is to share the files with an app. You can choose to share with the apps that are provided depending on the type of file that you are sharing.

Or you can click on Find more apps and download an app from Microsoft Store to share it with.

Sharing via this option will allow you to open the file with an app easily so you don’t have to load the app and open the file in it, saving you a few extra clicks and time.

How to share photos and videos using Photos app

The same three Windows Explorer sharing options mentioned above are also found on some other native apps. For instance, the Photos app, which is the default app to open pictures and GIFs on Windows, will also let you share them with others.

To share pictures and images, open the file in the Photos app. Then click on Share at the top.

Now, you will get the same three options as mentioned above, which are – Nearby sharing, email a contact, or share with app.

The method to share via these three options is exactly the same as shown before.

How to share links from Microsoft Edge

Just as you get the three aforementioned sharing options on the Photos app, you can also share links the same way via Microsoft Edge – Windows default browser.

To do so, open Microsoft Edge and go to the link that you want to share. Now click on the three dots at the top right corner.

Then click on Share.

The same three options of Nearby Sharing, email a contact, and share with app will appear.

Follow the steps as they’re mentioned above to share your links via these three options.

How to share a folder on a network

If you’re connected to other systems on the same network, you can share a folder easily with them. Here’s how you can do so:

Right-click the folder that you want to share and select Properties.

Click on the ‘Sharing’ tab to switch to it, and click on Share.

Now click on the drop-down menu.

Select Everyone.

Then click on Add.

Now click Share.

Then press Done.

Your folder is now shared. But the recipient may not have all the permissions to the folder and the files within it. To change that, click on Advanced Sharing.

Check the Share this folder option.

Now click on Permissions.

Change the permissions as you see fit and then click on OK on all open windows.

This folder will now be accessible to all those who are on the shared network.

How to share a drive on a network

Similarly, you can also share your complete drive on a Network. This is an important option when working in teams as it gives one access to their peers’ hard drive in full. Here’s how you can share your drive on a Network:

Open File Explorer and right-click on the drive that you want to share. Select Properties.

Click on the ‘Sharing’ tab.

Then click on Advanced sharing.

You will find that the options are the same as before. Check the Share this folder option.

Then click on Permissions.

Change permissions as you wish and click OK.

And just like that, your complete drive is now shared with those who’re on the same network.

These are some of the native ways of sharing files, folders, and drives on Windows 11.

How to transfer files from USB flash drive to Windows 11

Once you have the correct USB ports available for the thumb drive with your files, insert the drive into the USB port. A USB-C drive goes into the USB-C port and USB 2.0/3.0 goes into the standard USB port.

Depending on your computer settings, Windows 11 will notify you to choose what to do with the files, similar to the notification below.

Then new pop up should come up with options on what to do with the drive inserted. At this point, click Open folder to view files.

In some cases, you may not get a prompt, and File Explorer will automatically open and show you the content of the drive. If File Explorer doesn’t open the memory card or drive automatically, click on This PC on the left, then double-click a newly attached drive with a letter E, F, G or H?

At this point, you can either choose to transfer a single file or all the files on the memory card to your computer. If you’re transferring all the file, then pressing CTRL + A on your keyboard to select all the file. You can also read this post to learn how to select files.

Once you’ve selected the file or all the files, press the Windows key and E on your keyboard. A new windows of File Explorer will open up. Simply browse to where you want to put the copied files, then press the CTRL + V on your keyboard to paste the file(s).

hello, I switched to using a laptop with Windows 11 (passed down to me by another person), so i am trying to copy over files and folders from my existing laptop (Windows 10). I copied the files and folders onto an external hard disk drive. when i try to copy over to the other laptop, some folders it just doesn’t copy over. when i clicked paste, there is no response, any idea? thanks! i am searching google and YouTube but not getting any hint yet.

Copying files from external HDD to Windows 11 HDD forces those files to be stored on OneDrive. As only 5 GiG is available on the “free” storage of OneDrive, anything over that gets tagged as a error being unavailable.
The easy option is to fork out more money to Microsoft for more storage where it is downloaded from when needed, another slow process, costly, and not all that secure. Microsoft has our files, not us. We just provide Microsoft with the medium to stalk us.
Windows 11 is NOT free. In exchange for Windows 11, we give up our rights to privacy.
To transfer all files docs/pics/video/downloads etcetera, is to search the Internet or Google, for how to disable OneDrive. Then copy the file to where you want them, not where Windows wants them.

With so many cloud storage solutions (Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive), I am sure, most of us maintain accounts on multiple services to take advantage of the additional free storage. Now, there are times when one may need to transfer some files from one service to another.

Of course, one can download files from one service and then re-upload it again to another service. Not only is this process is time taking, but you also end up consuming twice the amount of bandwidth of the files. Even if you do a drag-and-drop between the corresponding service folders on your computer, the bandwidth loss is still there. Not optimal, right?

Today we will show you how you could conduct such file transfers using an online tool called SMEStorage. SMEStorage is a basically an online service that lets you access and manage multiple cloud storage accounts under a single roof. So let’s see how to use it to easily transfer files between Dropbox, Google Drive and SkyDrive.

Adding an Account to SMEStorage

Step 1: Visit SMEStorage and create a free account with them. As a free user, you get 5 GB Amazon S3 hosted by SMEStorage plus any 3 supported cloud storage account management. For the task we have in mind, a free account would be enough.

Step 2: Once you create and confirm your account, log in to your home admin panel. Here select the option, Manage cloud provider to get started.

Step 3: Now, under the section, Providers currently in use press the button Add new provider to add Dropbox, Google Docs (will work for Google Drive too as both are now merged together) and SkyDrive.

Step 4: You will have to authenticate your accounts and provide SMEStorage access to them by granting it some permissions over your account. Having done that, SMEStorage will synchronize all your files so that you can access them all through SMEStorage.

Finally, once you have added all the accounts, it’s time to see how to transfer files from one account to another without downloading them to your computer. So let’s begin…

Transferring File from One Cloud Storage to Another Online

Step 1: Open SMEStorage file manager (not the one in beta) and open the cloud storage account you want to copy your files from.

Step 2: Now the idea is to generate a download link for a file from one cloud storage service and then use the remote upload feature on the same link to upload it to another. So navigate to the file you want to move to another cloud account, click on it and select the option, Generate direct link. Copy the link to your clipboard.

Step 3: Open the destination account now and navigate to the folder where you want to copy your files. Click the download button and paste the direct download link you generated above. Click the button Download by URL to start the process.

The file will be queued to your cloud sync task and will be done quite quickly.

Conclusion

As a free user there are some limitations on the file transfers, such as the file size cannot exceed 20 MB, and you can only transfer 1024 MB of files in a month. There are premium services supported, and you can pay a sum of money to remove the restriction.

So next time you have to transfer files from one cloud service to another without losing your bandwidth, SMEStorage is really an effective way to do so.
