How do I fix Games For Windows Live issues on Windows 10?
1. Reinstall Games for Windows Live
- Uninstall Microsoft Games for Windows Live Redistributable and Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace from your computer. In order to do this, we recommend a dedicated software.
- After you’ve uninstalled these applications restart your computer.
- Download Games for Windows Live installer.
- After you’ve downloaded the installer, right-click it, and choose Properties.
- Go to Compatibility tab and check Run this program in compatibility mode for… and choose Windows 7 or Windows 8 from the list.
- While you’re in the Compatibility tab make sure that you check Run as administrator.
- Save the changes by clicking Apply and OK and install Games for Windows Live.
- Everything should work now and your profile should be redownloaded and ready to use.
As mentioned, to uninstall the program in the first place, we suggest using dedicated uninstaller software, for clean removal. This is just to make sure that the process runs completely, without leaving traces in your system, which might cause trouble later on.
A standard uninstall sits in the shadows of a professional uninstall, which removes all residues, including checking for leftovers after the regular uninstall.
Some uninstaller software also has user-friendly interfaces, allowing you to view all installed applications on your PC in a single window. To make things easier, you can locate and remove unwanted apps faster and safer.
2. Install Live Sign-in Assistant
If the previous solution doesn’t work try downloading the latest Live Sign-in Assistant from the official Microsoft page. After downloading and installing Live Sign-in assistant enter your login details and try launching your games.
- The Windows Live ID or password you entered is not valid
- How to run old games on Windows 11
- 10+ best Windows 10/11 games
- How to play Microsoft Store games on Steam
3. Transfer all xlive files
- Go to the following location (if you’re using 32-bit Windows this location might be different): C:Windows SysWOW64
- Find the xlive, xlive.dll, xlive.dll.cat, xlivefnt.dll, xliveinstall.dll, xliveinstallhost.exe files and copy them to C:WindowsSystem32
- Try running the game again
- If this didn’t work, try copying those files in the installation directory of your game where the game’s .exe file is located.

- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Batman: Arkham City
- Bioshock 2
Edition
- Dead Rising 2
- Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
- DiRT 3
- Resident Evil 5
- Super Street Fighter IV:

There are a lot of valid reasons why someone would want to play Windows 7 games on Windows 10. In any case, installing Windows 7 games on Windows 10 is still possible and it’s a lot easier than it used to be, thanks to the work done by independent developers.
For those unaware, Microsoft games were bundled with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 7, after which it disappeared forever. On Windows 10, you can also play games like Solitare for free, but Microsoft will ask you to “upgrade to premium edition” and you might see ads.
On the other hand, Windows 7 games have enjoyed a much more prominent role within Microsoft’s operating system lineup.
With a third-party program created by members of Digital Life forum, you can install and play games like Solitaire, Minesweeper, Mahjong Titans, and Hearts on Windows 10.
Install classic Windows 7 games on Windows 10
To enable support for Windows 7 games, follow these steps:
- Download the executable file from here.
- Launch the installer and click on “next”.
- Select the games you want to install, but uncheck Internet games.
- Choose the installation path.
- Click on next.
- After installation is complete, close the program.
- Open Start Menu and navigate to All Apps.
- In all apps list, click on the “Games” folder to launch classic games.
Some of you might understandably be nervous about installing an unknown program, but remember that you always scan the program using Windows Defender or third-party antivirus programs.
Of course, we’ve also scanned the download package using both Windows Defender and VirusTotal and tested it with Windows 10 October 2020 Update (version 20H2). No threats or false positives were detected.
If you want, you can test this program in a virtual machine before trying out on your primary machine.
Also, you can uninstall this program and remove the apps by heading to Programs & Features page in Control Panel.
List of supported classic Microsoft games
- Classic Solitare, Spider Solitaire and Hearts.
- Minesweeper
- FreeCell
- Purple Place
- Mahjong Titans
As of December 27 2020, these games are working with the following versions of Windows 10:
- Preview Build 21777 or older.
- Version 20H2 (Build 19042).
- Version 2004 (Build 19041)
- Version 1909 and 1903.
As you can see in the screenshot below, classic Windows 7 games will launch within a few seconds and the user interface might look a little smaller than you recall. For some games and configurations, window size could be locked at a lower resolution. (Remember, x768 was more popular back then.)
While in-game audio is still working and most games are usable, Microsoft has disabled support for Internet Explorer games – Internet Backgammon, Internet Checkers and Internet Spades.
Have you encountered problems while launching Fallout 3 on Windows 10? If so, you should read this post, in which MiniTool offers you 4 ways to fix the Fallout 3 won’t launch Windows 10 issue.
Fallout 3 Won’t Launch on Windows 10
Fallout 3 is an action role-playing open world game created by Bethesda and released to the world on multiple platforms back in 2008. It is one of the most successful games of not only its time but also its genre. Even today, 10 years later, there are still many people who like it.
However, a lot of gamers report that Fallout 3 won’t launch on Windows 10. Fallout 3 can be installed and launched on Windows 10 but it crashes right after the player clicks on New while starting a new game, right before the intro scene plays.
The Fallout 3 won’t launch Windows 10 issue includes the following reasons:
- The incompatibility between Fallout 3 and Windows 10: Fallout 3 was released in 2008 and centered to run around Windows Vista’s architecture, while Windows 10 was released in 2015. Therefore, this game has many incompatibilities with the Windows 10’s Architecture.
- The lack of GFW Live: Fallout 3 uses Games for Windows Live, which is preinstalled and integrated into the OS of the older versions of Windows. However, Windows 10 doesn’t have this software and you need to install it by yourself.
- Outdated drivers: Sometimes the outdated graphics card drivers raise many issues while launching games on Windows.
- A glitch with the game’s configuration: If you have updated Windows 10, the game’s configuration may be malfunctioning and therefore the game tries to run on the integrated graphics from Intel. Due to this, the game is prevented from launching.
After you have figured out the reasons of the Fallout 3 not launching issue, you can solve the problem accordingly.
This post provides you with 5 solutions to address the situation where Dragon Age Inquisition won’t launch on Windows 10.
Fix 1. Run Fallout 3 in Compatibility Mode or Run It as Administrator
Running Fallout 3 in compatibility mode is the most effective way to solve the Fallout 3 won’t launch Windows 10 issue due to incompatibility. Please refer to the following steps to run it in compatibility mode:
Step 1: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty (this may be the default location).
Step 2: Right-click on the Fallout 3 executable file and select Properties.
Step 3: Skip to Compatibility tab and check the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for. Then, expand the drop-down menu to choose a Windows XP system. Next, click OK button to save changes.
Step 4: Run this game to see whether the problem is solved.
Some games will write temporary files to the C drive, which requires administrator privileges. In addition, running Fallout 3 as administrator can solve many problems relating to this game. As for how to run it as administrator, please refer to the following steps:
Step 1: Refer to the above steps to open the Fallout3 Properties window and skip to the Compatibility tab again.
Step 2: Tick the Run this program as an administrator box. After that, select the Apply and then the OK button. Then, run this game to see whether the problem is solved.
This article exhibits 11 methods to fix the issue when Stem won’t open. Players of Steam games can try them one by one to fix the problem.
Fix 2. Install Games for Windows Live
Step 1: click here to download an executable file named gfwlivesetup, which is the installer of the Games for Windows Live.
Step 2: Run the executable and GFWL will install the needed files, allowing Fallout 3 to work. Apart from this, there is no additional work to do.
Fix 3. Update the Graphics Card Driver
Step 1: Press “Windows + X” keys and choose Device Manager from the pop-up menu to open it.
Step 2: Expand the Display adapters directory and right-click on the graphics card driver to choose Update driver. Then, choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
If the above method failed, you can use a professional third-party program to update drivers. Driver Easy Pro can detect all outdated drivers and update them with just one click. Here is the guide:
Step 1: Install Driver Easy and launch it. Click the Scan Now button.
Step 2: After the scanning process is completed, click the Update All button to download and install the latest drivers for all devices with outdated drivers.
Fix 4. Edit the Falloutprefs.ini File
In many cases, problems Windows 10 users face while trying to play Fallout 3 can be fixed by editing a config file belonging to Fallout 3, falloutprefs.ini. Please refer to the following steps to edit this file:
Step 1: Open the File Explorer and search for falloutprefs.ini file. Find the file in the searching results and then right-click on it to choose Open file location.
Step 2: After locating the falloutprefs.ini file, open it and double-click on it to open it in a new instance of Notepad.
Step 3: Find bUseThreadedAI=0 and change the value from 0 to 1. If you don’t see bUseThreadedAI=0 in the contents of the file, you just need to add bUseThreadedAI=1 in a new line within the file. Then, type iNumHWThreads=2 in a new line within the file.
Step 4: Press Ctrl + S to save the changes and close the instance of Notepad.
Step 5: Run Fallout 3 as administrator to see whether the problem is solved. If Fallout 3 still doesn’t work, you can go back into the falloutprefs.ini file to change iNumHWThreads=2 to iNumHWThreads=1. Then, save changes and restart Fallout 3 to see whether it can work normally.
When the Steam service component doesn’t work, you may encounter the Steam service error when you launch Steam on your PC. This article will show you the fixes.
A few days ago, Grand Theft Auto IV became no longer available to purchase on Steam. Now, in a statement made to The Verge, Rockstar has confirmed the problem lies with Games for Windows Live (GWFL).
The platform, which Microsoft closed down in 2013, has never had its service in patched out by Rockstar. It’s been causing numerous problems for GTA IV players over the years, and now has caused issues for Rockstar, too. A spokesperson for Rockstar told The Verge,
“With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.”
While those who currently own the game can still play, anyone looking to purchase GTA IV will have to wait while Rockstar finds alternative means of distribution. It’s possible we could see the game make a move from Steam to Rockstar’s own dedicated launcher.
Before Rockstar’s statement, speculation had begun to grow around the reason for the game’s removal. Music licenses expiring was cited as a potential reason, with Rockstar already having replaced numerous tracks back in 2018. Rockstar also had GTA Vice City briefly delisted in 2012 over expired music licenses.
GTA IV isn’t the first game to fall victim to GFWL’s demise. Publishers like 2K, Bandai Namco, and Capcom have already had to shed the dead weight of GWFL, though they did it several years ago.
Thankfully, Rockstar’s newer iteration is a little easier to get hold of. The game recently joined the Xbox Game Pass lineup, making it easier than ever to pick up and play. While you may not be able to go bowling, the game is still a hell of a lot of fun. It’s also the highest-grossing media title ever, which is pretty impressive if you ask us.

Windows 95 games on Windows 10. It can be done.
Perhaps one of the biggest challenges facing games older than ten years is getting them to work on modern PCs. Unlike film, books or other mediums, games can’t be as easily updated to work with current technology, but that doesn’t mean these games are lost to videogame history. There are emulators and compatibility modes in operating systems to help us revisit the games of our childhood.
Like a few previous iterations of Windows, Windows 10 still has both the ‘run as administrator’ and ‘troubleshoot compatibility’ options. If you right click on the game icon, there is an option at the bottom called Properties. If you click on that, a pop-up box will appear with a few tabs. Navigate to the Compatibility tab and check the compatibility mode box to un-gray the dropdown menu beneath and choose what previous version of windows you want to run your game in.
Windows should automatically detect how old your game is. So if you are trying to install something like 3-D Ultra Minigolf from 1997, it will let you choose a compatibility mode as far back as Windows 95. However, this isn’t always a fool-proof method; DOS games from way-back-when, for example, may be a particular challenge, but there are a few things you can do to get older games working on a modern machine, whether it’s tweaking some settings or installing other software.
What is compatibility mode?
Compatibility mode is a software mechanism inside of Windows that allows the operation system to emulate older versions of itself.
While Microsoft tries to make programs and file formats backwards compatible, it does’t always work with older games because the gap between when each one was released is too large. It depends on the program and how it’s optimized and designed, if it’s inherently backwards compatible, etc. There’s a few specific reasons why older games won’t run automatically on Windows 10, even in compatibility mode:
- 64-bit Windows 10 no longer supports 16-bit applications.
- Some older software depends on old Windows libraries that are no longer included with Windows 10.
- Since Windows XP, all versions of Windows no longer run on top of DOS.
- Older games rely on non-existent DRM (digital rights management) solutions that stop programs from booting.
But what if compatibility mode doesn’t work?
There are several third-party software solutions that are great workarounds, and a few Windows settings that you can turn off (although I would not necessarily recommend).
First, check Steam to see if it happens to have the game you want to play. Some developers will release remastered versions of older games to be compatible with modern operations systems. Duke Nukem 3D and Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines are two such games that have been re-released on the digital store front over the last several years. Sure, you’re technically purchasing a second copy of the game if you previously owned (or still own) it on CD, but you’re paying for the convenience of not downloading extra software or messing with Windows settings at that point.
GOG has also made it its mission to track down older games and make them available for purchase again, too. A few games they have made compatible with newer operating systems are Eye of the Beholder and Beneath a Steel Sky.
But what if I want to install from a CD?
If you still have your old game discs lying around—and an optical drive—and want to install your games the old-fashioned way, take a look at something called DOSBox. DOSBox is a stand-alone DOS emulator that supports hundreds of older games. You can find instructions on how to play a game via DOSBox here. There’s no legal gray area around emulation.
You can also try something like VirtualBox, a program that lets you build a virtual machine on your computer to run 16-bit applications in a window on your desktop—another emulator, in essence. Unlike Windows 7, Windows 10 does not have a “Windows XP mode,” which was a virtual machine with an XP license. You can basically create the same thing with VirtualBox, but you’ll need a Windows XP license. That alone doesn’t make this an ideal option, but it’s still an option.
Another option is to disable driver signature enforcement if it’s older drivers that are preventing your game from installing and/or running. This is not ideal either, as driver signing helps keep malicious or unstable drivers off your OS. But if you want to risk it so you can try to get through all 120 Lemmings levels again, here’s how to disable driver signature enforcement:
- Open the advanced boot menu by pressing Shift while you click Restart.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings.
- Press Restart.
- Select 7, disable driver signature enforcement.
- Press Enter to boot your system.

You will need to enable DirectPlay to run older Windows games. If you didn’t have this Windows feature activated you get an error message “An app on your PC needs the following Windows feature DirectPlay.”
DirectPlay in Windows is a part of DirectX that creates a link between multiple players in a game. Primarily DirectPlay enables the players to use multiplayer functionality to run games that predate 2008 in Windows 10 PC.
Since Microsoft abandoned DirectPlay and decided to roll out games for Windows Live, enabling DirectPlay is no longer required to play modern PC games.

Microsoft announced that it will shut down Games for Windows Live on July 1, 2014. The service will run as is until then, but when that day comes, it may have consequences for games that utilize the service.
Games for Windows Live started as a paid service, just like Xbox Live is nowadays, but Microsoft had to terminate the fees eventually as it would not really take off with them. One issue with Gfwl was that it used its own authorization system. This was especially troublesome if a game was bought or activated on Steam, as users had to go through two authorization processes before they could even start the game to play it.
And this highlights one of the issues that games may experience when they buy, install or play Games for Windows Live after July 1, 2014.
The activation and authorization servers are shut down at that point in time, which means that it will no longer be possible to activate a game or log in to the Games for Windows Live service.
The games affected? Not that many but several high quality titles such as Fallout 3, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising, Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, GTA IV, BioShock 2 or Batman Arkham City.
If games do not get patched by then, they may become unplayable. This is especially true for multiplayer which usually requires users to authenticate with a server before they can jump right in and play against others online.
Other games store save games only if you are signed in to GFWL, and this too would likely mean that players would lose their save games even if they can continue to play the game.
The big question is if developers will patch unplayable games before that date so that gamers can continue to play them. If developers do not offer patches, it is left to the community to deliver them. If that does not happen either, you end up with a game that you can never play again.
There is evidence that some developers are already working on patches for their games but it is not really clear how this will turn out for the majority of games.
As far as community projects go, there is a mod for Fallout 3 that disables Games for Windows Live so that you can play the game without it.
Closing Words
If I plug in a C-64 game disc in the computer today, it will play just fine. The same is true for Amiga games, and games on classic console systems such as SNES, Sega Genesis or the Playstation 2. The introduction of DRM has put an expiration date on games that removes control over the game from the people who purchased it to developers and networks running those DRM systems.
While this particular shutdown may turn out all right for the majority of games, as they may get patched by the company that produced them or by the community, it is likely that some games won’t receive a patch after all.
