How to install windows on a mac

By Isabella Wilson

Owning a Mac doesn’t mean you need to give up on Windows. Whether you want to run Windows-only software or get access to more computer games, you can still do so by installing Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant.

Boot Camp Assistant is a free app that lets you dual boot Windows on your Mac. In this guide, we’ll cover:

What you need to install Windows on a Mac

You can only install Windows if your Mac uses an Intel processor. That means Apple’s new M1 chip isn’t compatible. To check what’s in your Mac:

  1. Go to Apple >About This Mac
  2. Look at the Processor

How to install windows on a mac

You also need at least 64GB of free space for the Windows partition, though Apple recommends 128GB for better performance. Go to the Storage tab to view your free space.

Depending on your Mac, you may need to create a bootable USB installer from an external drive. Boot Camp Assistant will create this for you, but make sure you have a 16GB USB drive ready in case you need one. Delete any important files from this drive first, since Boot Camp Assistant will erase them.

Finally, you need about two hours of spare time from start to finish. This varies a lot depending on your internet speed and Mac specifications, but two hours is the average length of time it takes to install Windows on a Mac.

How to download Windows on a Mac

Before you can get Windows on your Mac, you first need to download the Windows installer as an ISO image. You can download this from the Microsoft website.

Select the edition and language you want to use, then be sure to choose the 64-bit download.

How to install windows on a mac

Microsoft lets you download and use Windows 10 for free, though there are some small limitations like not being able to change your desktop wallpaper. If you want to bypass these, you need to pay for a license to use Windows.

If you already have Windows on an installation disc, follow this guide on Apple’s website to create an ISO image from a Windows disc.

How to install Windows on a Mac with Boot Camp Assistant

Follow the instructions on Apple’s website to change your Mac’s Secure Boot setting to Full Security. Full Security is the default setting, so you only need to worry about this if you changed it to something else in the past.

Every Mac comes with Boot Camp Assistant pre-installed, which guides you through partitioning your Mac and installing Windows. Here’s how to use it:

1.Open Boot Camp Assistant from the Utilities or Other folder in your Applications. It might take a moment to clear free space on your Mac when it starts up

2. Click Continue on the welcome page and select the tasks you want to use Boot Camp for. We suggest you select every available task to install Windows and download support software. Depending on your Mac, you may also need to create a Windows 10 bootable USB installer; you should insert your drive now if you need to do this

3. Use the file browser to select the Windows 10 ISO image you downloaded. If you need to create a bootable USB installer, connect your USB drive and select it as the Destination disk. This will format your USB hard drive, so be sure to remove any important files first or they’ll get erased

How to install windows on a mac

4. Click and drag the slider to choose the partition sizes you want to use for macOS and Windows. Apple suggests using a minimum of 64GB for Windows. Click Install to create the partition and start installing Windows

5. Partway through the installation, your Mac will reboot into Windows 10. Follow the setup prompts to choose your language and input your product key. To use Windows 10 for free, click I don’t have a product key

6. Select the BOOTCAMP partition on your Mac as the Windows destination drive. Disconnect any external devices, like a keyboard or mouse, and click Next

7. Once the installation is complete, Windows will prompt you to create a user account. The first time you sign in, Boot Camp Assistant opens and asks you to install Apple support software. You need this software for hardware like the trackpad and speakers on your Mac to work properly in Windows.

How to use Windows on a Mac

After using Boot Camp Assistant, your Mac reboots running Windows and you can start using it right away. Running a Windows program on your Mac works exactly the same as it does on a Windows PC.

All you need to do is install some Windows-only programs or play video games on your Mac to get started.

How to switch from Windows to macOS

When you’re ready to switch back to macOS, restart your Mac and hold the Option or Alt key while it boots up again.

You should see a black screen that lets you choose to boot into Windows or macOS. Use the arrow keys and hit Return to choose the one you want.

Restart your Mac like this every time you want to switch between macOS and Windows.

What is the best way to run Windows on a Mac?

The two best ways to run Windows on a Mac are dual boot systems and virtualization. Each method has its own pros and cons, but you can install Windows as a dual boot system for free using Boot Camp Assistant.

Dual boot vs. virtualization

Dual boot partitions your computer and installs one operating system in each partition. Virtualization, on the other hand, runs one operating system inside another, like an app.

Dual boot offers better performance than virtualization because your Mac only needs to run Windows or macOS at any one time. However, every time you need to switch operating system with dual boot, you need to restart your Mac.

In contrast, virtualization lets you use both operating systems side by side. But because your Mac needs to run two operating systems at once, the performance for both of them is much worse.

Does Boot Camp make your Mac slower?

Boot Camp Assistant uses a dual boot system to install Windows, which means your Mac only runs Windows or macOS at any one time. As a result, Boot Camp shouldn’t have any impact on the speed of your Mac.

The only exception is if you used up all the storage on your Mac by installing Windows. This is easy to fix by creating more free space on your Mac.

Can I install Windows on a Mac without Boot Camp?

You can use lots of different software to install Windows on a Mac. Boot Camp is free and comes pre-installed with macOS, but you can only use it for a dual boot system. If you want to use Windows and macOS at the same time, you need to use virtualization software instead, like Parallels Desktop.

The first Macs with Apple Silicon are very impressive machines. But, in the shift from Intel chips to Apple’s own ARM processors, what happens to Windows software on a Mac? Does Boot Camp still work? Here’s everything you need to know.

Why the M1 Chip Is a Problem For Windows Software

Apple’s M1 chip is the first Apple Silicon chip used in Macs. This is a custom ARM chip that has more in common with the chips built into iPhones and iPads than the Intel CPUs found in existing Macs.

Apple built into a translation system named Rosetta 2, and it lets these new Macs run Mac applications designed for Intel Macs. Your existing Mac apps will run just fine even if they haven’t been upgraded to support Apple Silicon. There’s a bit of a slowdown due to the translation, but the M1 chip is so fast that they seem to perform just as well as they did on Intel Macs. Those apps will run even faster after they’ve been updated to support Apple Silicon.

But what about apps that aren’t Mac apps?

How to install windows on a macApple

Do M1 Macs Support Boot Camp?

Apple’s Intel Macs include a feature called “Boot Camp” that lets you install Windows directly on your Mac. To switch between Windows and macOS, you have to reboot. Windows runs on the Mac just as it would on a PC. After all, both Intel Macs and PCs have the same hardware architecture.

However, Boot Camp is not supported on M1 Macs with Apple Silicon. Boot Camp only works on Intel-based Macs. You can’t use Boot Camp to install Windows on an M1 MacBook or Mac Mini.

Even if Apple did support Boot Camp on M1 Macs, you could only install the ARM version of Windows 10. As of November 2020, this version of Windows isn’t really ready for prime time. It has an emulation layer so it can run Windows software written for Intel chips, but it’s much slower and buggier than the Mac’s translation layer. Also, it can’t yet run 64-bit Intel Windows applications—only 32-bit programs. Microsoft is working on it.

Even if you were fine with the limitations of Windows 10 on ARM, Microsoft doesn’t make the ARM version of Windows 10 available to download and install on your own devices. Windows 10 on ARM is only available to device manufacturers who want to preinstall it.

Can You Run Windows Virtual Machines on M1 Macs?

You can also run Windows software on Intel Macs through virtual machines. Popular virtual machine programs include Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion. Do these work on an M1 Mac?

They will be—eventually. As of the release of Apple’s M1 MacBooks in November 2020, these virtual machine programs weren’t yet ready to support MacBooks.

The existing versions of Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion don’t run properly on MacBooks with Apple Silicon. These applications depend on hardware virtualization features on current Intel Macs. Both Parallels and VMware promise that future versions will. VMware isn’t ready to commit to a timeline on supporting these new Macs yet. These tools must be modified to support Apple’s new chips.

However, architecture will once again be a problem. At WWDC 2020, Apple showed Parallels flawlessly running a virtual machine—a Linux virtual machine. That was likely an ARM version of Linux.

Even when these new virtual machine tools are ready, it seems like they will only run ARM operating systems. Parallels says it is “amazed by the news from Microsoft about adding support [for] x64 applications in Windows on ARM.” Microsoft would need to make Windows 10 on ARM available for Mac users to install in virtual machines to take advantage of that. It sounds like Parallels isn’t working on running Intel versions of Windows on Apple Silicon. This might be very slow even if it was possible.

Does CodeWeavers CrossOver Work?

Here’s one way you can run some Windows applications on an M1 Mac: By using CodeWeavers Crossover for Mac. This application is based on the open-source Wine software that became famous for letting Linux users run some Windows applications without Windows itself.

CodeWeavers is essentially a reverse-engineered compatibility layer designed to run Windows applications on non-Windows operating systems. It’s not perfect, it doesn’t support every application, and you will experience some bugs. CodeWeavers maintains a database listing applications that work well.

CrossOver does work on MacBooks with Apple Silicon. If it can run a Windows application on a Mac, it can run that same application on a Mac with Apple Silicon.

Should You Buy an M1 Mac If You Need Windows?

Apple’s M1 MacBook AIr, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini are first-generation products. They’re laying the groundwork for a Mac future without Intel processors.

There’s a reason that Apple still sells Macs with Intel processors. Apple Silicon Macs are not yet ready for everyone.

If you need a full Windows operating system in Boot Camp or a virtual machine, these M1 MacBooks are not the computers for you. If you need a new Mac, consider getting an Intel Mac.

But, if you really like these M1 MacBooks, you might try a compromise. For example, if you’re happy having two machines, you could have one MacBook and a separate laptop or desktop for your Windows software. It sounds crazy, but it might be a nicer experience than rebooting back and forth to use Boot Camp.

Or, you could run Windows applications on a remote Windows PC and access them remotely. In fact, that might be the future solution for many people. Microsoft is reportedly working on a “Cloud PC” product that will let organizations run their apps on Microsoft’s servers and access that desktop from any device.

Ever found yourself in a situation where you loved software, only to know that it is compatible with Mac machines? Agreed, it is an anomaly as the number of Windows compatible software is vast. But at times, you might find yourself in such a situation or may come across with certain apps that work better on macOS.

If you are stuck in such a situation, here we will state ways for you to run Mac apps on Windows 10 device. Surprised! Don’t be, just remember nothing is impossible.

Ways to run Mac Apps on Windows 10

Step 1: Make a Virtual Machine with macOS on it

This is the simplest way to get Mac on Windows and run Mac apps on windows PC. To learn how to run Mac programs on Windows check out my tutorial on How to Install macOS Mojave on Windows 10 in a Virtual Machine?

The step by step guide will make you learn how to get macOS virtual machine and how to install it on Windows 10.

Once you have the virtual machine up and running with macOS on it, come back here to learn ways to install and run Mac apps on Windows.

Step 2: Use your Apple Account

From this step onwards everything will work in a similar manner as it works on actual macOS. You’ll need to login into your Apple account to access App Store. If you don’t have one you’ll need to create an Apple account.

To create an Apple account on a web browser, follow the steps below:

    1. Head to Apple ID account page, fill in all the particulars given in the form to create your AppleID. Remember provided email address will be your new AppleID.

How to install windows on a mac
    2. Next select security questions, if you want to receive updated checkbox to subscribe.
    3. Click Continue.

These simple steps will help you create an Apple ID.

Once done login to your Apple account to start downloading apps from App Store. To access App Store click on App Store icon present in the dock. Log in to your Apple account > look for the app you wish to download > click on Get > Install.

This will install the apps on your macOS virtual machine installed on Windows 10.

How to install windows on a mac

Using these simple steps you can use macOS on Windows 10 with the help of a virtual machine.

This might hit you with questions like what about the current session? Will you able to resume it from where you left or not?

To resume working from where you left you would need to shut down virtual machine in a sequence for this click on Apple logo > Shut Down. This will help you resume working.

However, if you want to extra cautious you can take a snapshot, to save the current state of the virtual machine.

To take a snapshot on VMware click on VM > Snapshot > Take Snapshot.

How to install windows on a mac

Next, give a name to the snapshot and hit Take Snapshot.

This way you’ll be able to save your current session.

Using these simple steps you can easily run Mac Apps on Windows machine. However, you must never forget since you are using a Virtual machine they might not work as on actual macOS. This is simply due to a virtual machine sharing the host machine’s system resource. In addition to this, a piece of advice avoid updating your macOS Virtual Machine as the patch that makes the macOS virtual machine run is compatible with a specific version and may not work with the updates.

Can you run Mac apps on Windows?

You can run Mac apps on Windows 10 easily, but before that you need to install macOS on Windows 10 in a virtual machine. Here, virtual machines play an important role to imitate dedicated hardware by emulation of a computer system. You also need to download and install certain essential tools such as VMware to run Mac apps on Windows 10.

Can you run Mac on a PC?

Yes you can run Mac on a PC like a pro. To do this, you would require a compatible PC where you can install macOS. Here, you need to select the hard drive on which you never had Windows installed. You can run Mac on a PC by creating an image file of macOS or doing it through a virtual machine.

Can you download Apple apps on Windows 10?

Apple’s iTunes apps are now available to download on Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store. It is useful development for users who wish to access iTunes apps on Windows 10. Here, you can download, purchase, and manage iTunes apps easily from Windows 10 Store.

Is it safe to use Hackintosh?

Well, it totally depends on the method you use to access macOS on Windows machine. If you create an image of macOS and clone it on Windows PC or you try a virtual machine to access Mac apps on windows PC, you probably are in safe hands. On the other hand, it could be debatable whether using Mac on Windows is legal or not, as you are licensed to use the software and license terms don’t allow you to imitate software.

    Is a Hackintosh worth it?

If you want to access all features and functionalities of Mac without spending money on buying new Mac system, then Hackintosh is a good option. It is also useful for users who tend to work on two different systems that require access to Mac and Windows features.

Of course, you can give it try, but keep in mind you can lose everything on the virtual machine in this process.

How to install windows on a mac

Most new PCs don’t come with DVD drives anymore. So it can be a pain to install Windows on a new computer.

Luckily, Microsoft makes a tool that you can use to install Windows from a USB storage drive (or “thumbdrive” as they are often called).

But what if you don’t have a second PC for setting up that USB storage drive in the first place?

In this tutorial we’ll show you how you can set this up from a Mac.

You can download the ISO file straight from Windows. That’s right – everything we’re going to do here is 100% legal and sanctioned by Microsoft.

If you want an English-language version of the latest update of Windows 10, you can download the ISO here.

If you have a relatively new computer, you probably want the 64-bit version. If you’re not sure, go with the 32-bit version to be safe.

If you want a non-English-language version of Windows, or want to get an older update version, download the ISO here instead.

The ISO file is only about 5 gigabytes, but I recommend you use a USB drive with at least 16 gigabytes of space just in case Windows needs more space during the installation process.

I bought a 32 gigabyte USB drive at Walmart for only $3, so this shouldn’t be very expensive.

Stick your USB drive into your Mac. Then open your terminal. You can do this using MacOS Spotlight by pressing both the ⌘ and Space bar at the same time, then typing “terminal” and hitting enter.

Don’t be intimidated by the command line interface. I’m going to tell you exactly which commands to enter.

Open Mac Spotlight using the ⌘ + space keyboard shortcut. Then type the word “terminal” and select Terminal from the dropdown list.

Paste the following command into your terminal and hit enter:

You will see output like this (note – your Mac’s terminal may be black text on a white background if you haven’t customized it).

How to install windows on a mac

Copy the text I point to here. It will probably be something like

Next format your USB drive to Windows FAT32 format. This is a format that Windows 10 will recognize.

Note that you should replace the disk2 with the name of the your drive from step 3 if it wasn’t disk2 . (It may be disk3 or disk4 ).

Run this command using the correct disk number for your USB:

    diskutil eraseDisk MS-DOS “WIN10” GPT /dev/disk2

Then you’ll see terminal output like this.

This will probably only take about 20 seconds on a newer computer, but may take longer on an older computer.

Note that for some hardware, you may instead need to run this command, which uses the MBR format for partitioning instead of GPT. Come back and try this command if step 7 fails, then redo steps 5, 6, and 7:

Now we’re going to prep our downloaded ISO file so we can copy it over to our USB drive.

You will need to check where your downloaded Windows 10 ISO file is and use that. But your file is probably located in your

    /Downloads folder with a name of Win10_1903_V1_English_x64.iso .

Update April 2020: One of the files in the Windows 10 ISO – install.wim – is now too large to copy over to a FAT-32 formatted USB drive. So I’ll show you how to copy it over separately.

Thank you to @alexlubbock for coming up with this workaround.

First run this command to copy over everything but that file:

    rsync -vha –exclude=sources/install.wim /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/* /Volumes/WIN10

Then run this command to install Homebrew (if you don’t have it installed on your Mac yet):

    /usr/bin/ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL )”

Then use Homebrew to install a tool called wimlib with this terminal command:

    brew install wimlib

Then go ahead and create the directory that you’re going to write the files into:

Then run this command. Note that this process may take several hours, you may see 0% progress until it finishes. Don’t abort it. It will use wimlib to split the install.wim file into 2 files less than 4 GB each (I use 3.8 GB in the following command), then copy them over to your USB:

    wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WIN10/sources/install.swm 3800

Once that’s done, you can eject your USB from your Mac inside Finder.

Congratulations – your computer now should boot directly from your USB drive. If it doesn’t, you may need to check your new PC’s BIOS and change the boot order to boot from your USB drive.

Windows will pop up a screen and start the installation process.

Enjoy your new PC, and your newly-installed copy of Windows.

When a computer user has promised to use Mac, there shouldn’t be any dealing with Microsoft Windows at all. But so many times a Mac OS just might not feel right. There are too many restrictions, it’s just not a friendly OS for gamers, and there are factors like getting used to a platform for so long time that might intrigue a Mac user to try out Windows on their Mac.

How to install windows on a mac

The latest Windows 10 Technical Preview is already out for the developers to get their hands on it, and guess what even the Mac users can get the taste. Mac users wouldn’t have the installation like a breeze on normal computers; however, the setup wouldn’t be difficult for advanced users either.

The Retina display actually looks good when it runs Windows. There are just too many colors in Windows that comes out when you use it on an Apple ecosystem. There won’t be any licensing fee as it is a preview version; and as Microsoft announced the upgrade will be free for latest Windows version users. Mac users don’t fall in that category though.

How to Install Windows 10 on Mac

Apple has default software named Boot Camp, which lets the Mac users install a fresh copy of Windows on a different hard drive partition. This is an easier method, you just follow the processes and the Boot Camp app turns your computer into a full-fledged Microsoft Windows running platform.

And if you want to keep your hard drive partition as it is, then you are required to undergo the difficult and more advanced option. That way, Windows will run on your Mac computer within an OS X program; like inception where an OS runs within another OS. VirtualBox is developed by Oracle and it’s free. There’s another alternative for the same job named Parallels Desktop but they take $80 for the hassle free service. We would recommend VirtualBox for Windows 10 since it’s a new version and there aren’t much stable, anything can go wrong anytime. In that case, a virtual machine lets the user wipe the mess and start over again without any scratch on the existing OS X based Apple ecosystem on your machine.

Windows 10 seems to run fine on all latest generation Mac computers. There hasn’t been any remarkable glitch or bugs during our test.

A Mac user would have to go through some tiring process to install Windows 10 on their computer.

    Windows 10 ISO Download

Microsoft has released the ISO for Windows 10 on their website – it’s still free since it’s only a technical preview version. However, you don’t get the ISO unless you sign up for Microsoft Insider by submitting your email address.

    Install Windows 10 using VirtualBox

Download VirtualBox from Oracle’s website and follow the instructions on Windows 10 installation inside this virtual environment. It’s easy; you can figure these out just by taking a quick peek.

How to install windows on a mac

During the Windows installation, select Windows 8.1 as there’s no Windows 10 option yet. It just worked fine on our machine.

How to install windows on a mac

After the required installation process, you will be presented with a black screen with a floating Windows logo. The Windows 10 setup on your Macintosh has just been done; now you may proceed with Windows 10 user setup.

Install Windows 10 on Mac using Boot Camp

To start the process, you will need a USB Drive with 8GB free space. Insert the USB drive then start the Boot Camp app.

How to install windows on a mac

Now you need to partition your hard disk. Windows 10 need 20GB space at least.

How to install windows on a mac

Now you need to click the Install button to start the Windows 10 installation process.

After the Boot Camp Windows 10 installation is complete your Mac will be restarted and will start with the new Windows 10.

    Summary

Windows 10 is still in its testing phase and it might not meet your expectation yet. If you are trying out Windows 10 just for experience then there shouldn’t be any problem. For daily usage, you should wait till the full version arrives.

Is it possible to run a Windows Forms application (developed using Visual Studio on Windows) on macOS?

What would be needed? Is it free or would I have to purchase something?

Yes, it is possible. For example, you can use Mono.

The .Net Core is cross platform though it doesn’t include winform (maybe it will in the future) or Wpf (definitely won’t be cross platform in future).

You can use Xamarin Studio and Mono to make a winform app for mac, though if you want to to use Visual Studio buy Xamarin business license for VS support or make a XNA or a web app. See my answer here .net core for linux and mac for more info.

I’ve used Xamarin and GTK#, as well as Xamarin for code-behind and XCode for forms design. They both work pretty decently with C# for code-behind stuff.

Just keep in mind that GTK# looks quite clunky and dated when you put it next to a native Mac application.

On the other hand, the object framework for XCode forms (yeah, I know I’m not using the “correct” terminology. ) presents a bit of a learning curve, but isn’t terribly hard, and Xamarin did a sweet job of integrating the object model into C#, so between the Apple documentation and what Xamarin provides, and er.. from StackOverflow itself, you should be able to produce some neat-looking apps.
