Knowing their details would help you when you are setting up a new router or troubleshooting network issues.

In this post today, we will be exploring a few nifty ways to find the MAC, IP and DNS Addresses on Windows 10 systems.

1. IP Address

What Is an IP Address

An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a unique identifier in the form of a numerical label for your system when it connects to a computer network. It’s a string of numbers and separated by periods.

Every device connected to a network has one such address assigned. These addresses bear the location details of both the sender and receiver on a network, just like parcels. Every computer gets a different IP address whenever connecting to the internet or locally on your LAN or Wi-Fi network.

So, if you do notice something fishy you can seek the help of IP lookup tools to check for the origin and other related details.

There’s more to IP addresses such as different types of addresses (Static, Dynamic, Private) and different versions (IPv4 and IPv6). Thankfully, finding out the IP address of your computer isn’t rocket science. You can find it either through Command Prompt or the Settings.

Hit the Windows Key+R keys to open the Run window and type cmd to open the Command Prompt. Type the following command as shown in the screenshot below.

Internet emails are designed to carry the IP address of the computer from which the email was sent. This IP address is stored in an email header that is delivered to the recipient along with the message. Email headers are similar to envelopes for postal mail. Email headers contain the electronic equivalent of addressing and postmarks that reflect the routing of mail from source to destination.

Modern email clients often hide the headers from view. However, headers are always delivered along with the message contents. Most email clients provide an option to enable the display of these headers if desired.

Internet email headers contain several lines of text. Some lines are labeled as Received followed by the IP addresses for the sending (from) email server and the receiving (by) email server, such as in the following fictitious example:

These lines of text are automatically inserted by email servers that route the message. If only one Received line appears in the header, you can be confident this is the actual IP address of the sender.

Understanding Multiple Received Lines

In some situations, however, multiple Received lines appear in an email header. This happens when the message passes through multiple email servers. Some email spammers insert additional fake Received lines into the headers to confuse recipients.

To identify the correct IP address when multiple Received lines are involved requires a bit of detective work. If no faked information was inserted, the correct IP address is contained in the last Received line of the header. This is a simple rule to follow when looking at mail from friends and family.

If faked header information was inserted by a spammer, different rules are applied to identify a sender’s IP address. The correct IP address isn’t contained in the last Received line because information faked by a sender appears at the bottom of an email header. To find the correct address:

  • Start from the last Received line and trace the path taken by the message by traveling up through the header.
  • The by location listed in each Received line should match the from location listed in the following Received line.
  • Disregard any entries that contain domain names or IP addresses that don’t match the rest of the header chain.
  • The last Received line containing valid information contains the sender’s true address.

Many spammers send emails directly rather than through internet email servers. In these cases, all Received header lines except the first one are faked. The first Received header line contains the sender’s true IP address in this scenario.

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number that can identify each host (computers, routers, switches, etc.) on a network. When a host sends information to the IP address of a second receiving host it includes IP of origination, IP of destination and other information. Knowing the IP address of key network components such as routers, firewalls and servers, can be useful when troubleshooting network problems. Use of utilities like Ping or Trace Route can help isolate problem areas.

A knowledge of relevant network topology and settings including DNS, gateway and subnet mask can also be useful when exploring network issues.

Domain Name Service (DNS) numbers are IP addresses that a workstation or server uses to refer to specific servers that resolve domain names to IP addresses.

A gateway IP refers to a device on a network which sends local network traffic to other networks.

Select Start > Programs > DOS Prompt

In the resulting command line window, type winipcfg.

A new window will open up displaying IP network information for that host.

In the first selection box, click on the down arrow and select the proper network interface. There will be a network connection listed for a dial-up, and one listed for each network card installed in the computer.

Click on the More Info button to see additional IP information.

The IP address will be listed in the current command line window. Other information such as the gateway address and DNS numbers will also be displayed.

Mac OS 8-9.x

Click on the Apple Menu (in the upper left corner of the display) > Control Panel > TCP/IP.

A new window will open, the TCP/IP Control Panel. This window will contain information such as IP address, subnet mask, router address (gateway), name server address (DNS) and other IP information.

Mac OS 10.x

Click on the Apple Menu > System Preferences.

Click on Network.

If the network settings are grayed out select the click the lock to make changes button. Then enter in the admin account name and password to proceed with viewing the network settings.

Choose the ethernet port by clicking the double arrows next to Show Fields and select Built in Ethernet.

Click on the TCP/IP tab.

The IP address, subnet mask, router (gateway) and domain name servers (DNS) will be displayed in the active window.

Novell 4.11-6

At the System Console screen, type config.

The last two lines of the information displayed on the screen will be the IP address and the subnet. To find the DNS numbers and gateway, follow these steps:

At the System Console screen, type load inetcfg.nlm. The Internetworking Configuration tool will launch.

Select Protocols > TCP/IP. Press Enter and the TCP/IP Protocol Configuration window will display.

Press the down arrow to LAN Static Routing Table. Press Enter.

The default route listed will be the gateway address.

Press Esc until the TCP/IP Protocol Configuration window is again visible.

Press the down arrow to DNS Resolver Configuration. Press Enter.
The three DNS numbers, along with the name of the server, will be listed here. Press Esc four times and press Enter to exit out of inetcfg back to the main console screen.

Linux

Note: Root access may be required to run these commands. These commands will all be launched from the command line.

  1. Launch a command line interface. (This will vary depending on operating system distribution.)
  2. In the resulting command line window or screen, type ifconfig.
  3. Press Enter.

Typing ifconfig at the command line:

The subnet mask is listed as Mask:255.255.255.0.

The location of the gateway address can be found by typing netstat -rn at the command line. The output will look similar to:

An IP address lookup will determine the Geo-location of any IP address. The results has quite a bit of information. It will show you the city, state/region, postal/zip code, country name, ISP, and time zone. This data consequently used by various agencies to find the exact owner of any IPv4 or IPv6 address.

Furthermore, where the agency that controls the IP is located, proxies, cellular IPs, etc. If you are in the US and the controlling agency of the IP is located in Canada. Moreover, chances are the results will show as Canada. Showing a Canadian IP while in the northern US is very common among mobile users on the Verizon network.

IP Address Results

Often, people think if they perform an IP address lookup, that they are going to find the physical mailing address of the user assigned the IP in question. This is simply not true. At this time, we are not aware of any IP address database that will give you the exact physical postal address of the IP address you lookup. At best, you’ll get the exact city in which the user of the IP is located. For an exact physical address you would need to contact the ISP (Internet Service Provider) of the IP address in question.

However, without a police warrant, or some sort of legal document forcing the ISP to turn over the information. Don’t expect them to give you the mailing address of the user that received the assignment of the IP at the time you received the offensive email. Moreover, even other means of offensive / questionable communication from said IP.

Conclusion

The best you can do in this case is to file a complaint with the ISP and forward them all of the information from the questionable / offensive communication regarding the complaint. Ipconfig command is used to find the IP address of a system from command line. Run the command ipconfig В to print IP addresses for all network adapters installed on the system.

If you are interested in just knowing the IP address and not bothered about all other details printed by the command, you can use findstr to filter out unwanted details.

Here, it showsВ IP addresses for various interfaces installed on the computer, it includes IPv6 interfaces as well.

If the system is connected to a DHCP configured network then you can release the IP obtained from DHCP.

The above command works for IPv4. To release IPv6 address the command is given below.

Not show DHCP in my computer

I run cmd / ipconfig using an admin account and it displays the Default Gateway 86.187.161.242, but as it’s a dynamic IP address it both changes each log in and always times out after about 20 seconds. How can I extend the time out to say a minute?

Default Gateway = Router
If you login on your firmware of the router and go to your DHCP server settings.
And change your Client Lease Time. That should do the trick. ()

If the default gateway it self changes after 20 seconds. Then I suggest to contact your ISP provider. Or google how to set a static IP to your default gateway.

For “the network device”? What “network device”? You can’t access the registry without booting the computer with a rescue system CD. Because you are using XP, you can try mounting the registry using a BartPE disc. Here’s an article about doing that:

I have the same issue (question seems clear to me). I had a working computer with a hard coded IP network address (not one issued by DHCP). The drive has boot up problems so I can’t load the registry and other normal boot up items. I can read the hard drive, extract information, but the boot sectors are damaged and I want to extract as much disk information before I even attempt to repair the boot sectors with a system repair disk.

The IP address info has to be located somewhere on the hard disk (other than the damaged boot sectors, such as a Registry entry, or .ini file somewhere on the hard disk). I would like to know if it is possible to recover what this work stations fixed IP address was. There has to be some file on the hard disk that still holds this information, and I would like to know how to access it.
