How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Sometimes all you need is a single page from a large PDF document, but unfortunately most PDF readers do not have the option to extract a single page from a multiple-page PDF document.

Things have changed, though, as you now have an option to extract a single page from a PDF document as long as you run a Mac. The built-in app in the Mac called Preview lets you get the job done without having to find a third-party app that can help you do that.

If you have a PDF file and wish to extract a single page from it, here’s how to do that:

Extracting a Page from a PDF Document

The extracted page will work just like a normal PDF file; there is no need for a special app to access it.

1. Right-click on the PDF file you wish to extract a page from and select “Open With” followed by “Preview.” It should launch the PDF document in the Preview app.

2. When Preview launches with the selected PDF document, click on “View” followed by “Thumbnails.” It should launch the thumbnail view for the pages of the PDF document.

3. You should now be able to see the individual pages in that PDF document. Simply click on the page or pages that you wish to extract. You just need to single-click on the page and it will be selected.

Once you have selected a page, click on the “Edit” menu followed by “Copy” to copy the selected pages.

4. Here is the trick. What you are going to do now is create a new PDF document of the selected PDF page(s). That way you will have a new PDF file containing only the page(s) that you actually wanted instead of the whole PDF file.

To do that, click on “File” followed by “New from Clipboard” which will create a new file using the the page(s) that you have copied on your clipboard.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

5. You should see the copied page(s) in the new Preview window to do with whatever you want. Since you wish to use this as a separate PDF page, click on “File” followed by “Save…” to save the page as a PDF file.

6. Enter a name for the PDF file and click on “Save.” Make sure that the “Format” dropdown menu is set to PDF, or the file will not be saved in PDF format.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

You can now use the newly-created PDF file as you would any other normal PDF file. It now only contains the pages that you actually wish to use instead of all the pages from the original.

Conclusion

Why would you keep a lengthy PDF file on your Mac if what you actually want is just a single page from it? The guide above should help you get rid of everything except for the pages that you actually want in your PDF document.

While using Chrome to save specific pages from a PDF file works well, what if you want to extract multiple pages separately from a huge PDF file? Well, in that case, you will have to use software like Adobe Acrobat Professional (download) on Windows or Mac or Preview on macOS.

If you are looking for online tool, SmallPDF (visit) should be a good choice, as it works well on Windows, macOS and Linux systems.

Extract Pages from PDF in Android

Extracting specific pages from a PDF file in Android is pretty easy too and while there are various third party apps that let you do the job, you can do it natively:

    1. Just open a PDF file on your Android device, hit the three-dot menu button and tap on “Print“.

If you’d still like a third party app to extract pages from a PDF file, you can use a PDF editor app like Foxit PDF (Free, in-app purchases)

Extract PDF Pages on your Computer or Phone

Well, those were some fairly easy ways to extract PDF pages on Windows, macOS, Android or iOS. The best thing is, you don’t really need a separate PDF editor app to extract PDF pages and almost all platforms let you do it natively. Sure, Windows and macOS require you to use Chrome but chances are, you have Chrome installed on your computer. So, try out these methods and let us know if you have any doubts. You can extract pages from PDF using Google Chrome by saving the pages as a separate PDF file. We’ll show you how.

This is especially useful when you only need to convert a few pages of a very large document with our PDF to Excel converter, or if you want to reduce the size of the PDF for some other purpose.

In this example, I’ll extract pages from a PDF version of Nestlé Group’s Consolidated Financial Statements for 2016.

The process I’ll be illustrating is identical in Opera and quite similar in Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer.

    Step 1

Find your PDF document in Windows Explorer, then right-click on it and select Open With -> Google Chrome .

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

    Step 2

Once your PDF is open in Chrome, click the Print icon in top right hand side of the window.

    Step 3

When the Print dialogue appears, click Change in the Destination section.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

    Step 4

On the next screen, select Save as PDF .

NB: Don’t use Microsoft Print to PDF as your PDF will be saved as an image rather than a searchable PDF.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

    Step 5

Enter the page numbers you want to extract in the highlighted text box.

As an example, if you want pages 8 to 10, you would enter 8-10 . Or, if you want pages 12 and 14, you would enter 12, 14 . Now, if you want to be a total maverick, you could combine the two with 8-10, 12, 14 . This would give you pages 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 in one PDF document.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

    Step 6

Press Save then you’ll be asked to give your new PDF a name and a folder for it to be saved in.

Congratulations, you’re done! You can now convert your PDF to Excel, CSV, XML or HTML.

    Organise pages.

You can extract PDF pages. Or you can reorder, replace or delete them until your specific pages are organised exactly how you want them.

    Split PDFs into multiple files.

Use the PDF splitter to separate one or more PDFs into multiple documents by simply specifying the number of pages, file size or top-level bookmarks.

    Customise your file.

Mix and match, re-use pages from multiple PDF documents or separate PDF pages to customise your file with all the form fields, comments and links included. Leave unwanted content in your original file or just delete it.

    Work from anywhere.

With the Acrobat Reader mobile app, you’ve got a PDF splitter that can reorder, delete, insert or rotate PDF pages right from your mobile device.

How to split a PDF file:

    Choose “Organise Pages” > “Split.”

Choose how you want to split a single file or multiple files.

Name and save: Click “Output Options” to decide where to save, what to name and how to split your file.

Split your PDF: Click “OK” and then “Split” to finish. You can use additional PDF tools to extract pages or delete pages.

  • Save as new file: Name your new PDF file and click the “Save” button. That’s it.
  • There are a couple of ways to merge documents in Foxit PhantomPDF Standard/Business. The supported commands are “drag and drop”, Windows right-click menu, and the application built-in menus.

Merge documents or pages by dragging and dropping

You can merge one or multi-files into an existing opened file.

Inside PhantomPDF, open a PDF document that you want to merge other files into, open Pages navigation panel.

Browse your folder to locate a file or files , drag and drop them into the navigation panel.
Note: the file type could be any supported files as listed below.

Open the other PDF document where you want to extract pages from. Open Pages navigation panel, click to select a page or press “ctrl+ mouse click” to select multi-pages, drag and move your cursor to the tab name as a.pdf that you want to merge pages into (hold your mouse). You will notice your current tab is automatically switched to a.pdf.

Now, you are in the a.pdf document screen, move your cursor to the navigation panel, locate a position and release your mouse.

Note: When your mouse is hovering over the pages down or up in the navigation panel, the pages will scroll down or up so that you can locate a desired place to drop your extracted pages.

In the previous chapter, we have seen how to add JavaScript to a PDF document. Let us now learn how to split a given PDF document into multiple documents.

Splitting the Pages in a PDF Document

You can split the given PDF document in to multiple PDF documents using the class named Splitter. This class is used to split the given PDF document into several other documents.

Following are the steps to split an existing PDF document

Step 1: Loading an Existing PDF Document

Load an existing PDF document using the static method load() of the PDDocument class. This method accepts a file object as a parameter, since this is a static method you can invoke it using class name as shown below.

Step 2: Instantiate the Splitter Class

The class named Splitter contains the methods to split the given PDF document therefore, instantiate this class as shown below.

Step 3: Splitting the PDF Document

You can split the given document using the Split() method of the Splitter class this class. This method accepts an object of the PDDocument class as a parameter.

The split() method splits each page of the given document as an individual document and returns all these in the form of a list.

Step 4: Creating an Iterator Object

In order to traverse through the list of documents you need to get an iterator object of the list acquired in the above step, you need to get the iterator object of the list using the listIterator() method as shown below.

    Step 5: Closing the Document

Finally, close the document using close() method of PDDocument class as shown below.

    Example

Suppose, there is a PDF document with name sample.pdf in the path C:PdfBox_Examples and this document contains two pages — one page containing image and another page containing text as shown below.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

This example demonstrates how to split the above mentioned PDF document. Here, we will split the PDF document named sample.pdf into two different documents sample1.pdf and sample2.pdf. Save this code in a file with name SplitPages.java.

Compile and execute the saved Java file from the command prompt using the following commands

Upon execution, the above program encrypts the given PDF document displaying the following message.

If you verify the given path, you can observe that multiple PDFs were created with names sample1 and sample2 as shown below.

How easy would our lives be if there was a way to automate PDF content validation? Ever heard of a Java tool that makes our work easier by extracting the content of a PDF? If you are looking for such a tool, then theApache PDFBox is what you have been searching for.

    What Is PDFBox?

The Apache PDFBox library is an open-source Java tool for working with PDF documents. It allows us to create new PDF documents, update existing documents like adding styles, hyperlinks, etc., and extract content from documents.

Let’s get into the details on how to do that!

    Read Content From a PDF

Half of the problem is solved when you extract the text from the PDF. The following code does that for you.

Class PDFTextStripper takes a PDF document and strips out all of the text in a document. This ignores all formatting in the document.

Obtain All Hyperlinks From a Page in a PDF

The second important thing is to validate the PDF by checking the hyperlinks. The following code provides you with the hyperlinks in the document.

The getAnnotations() method of PDPage class gives you the list of annotations used in the document. Secondly, fetch the items that are part of the type PDActionURI. This provides a list of URLs used in the document or in a page.

Extract All Images From a PDF

In addition to text and hyperlinks, PDFBox provides the provision to extract images from a document.

getResources() method of PDPage class gives you the list of all resource objects (like images).

Get Words That Are Hyperlinked in a PDF

Getting text, hyperlinks, and images from a PDF are fairly straightforward tasks.

Next, we go a little further to see how to extract hyperlinked words.

As we see in the second section, for all ‘link’ annotations, and for every link, crop the text area by using PDRectangle class. The below code gives you the list of words that are hyperlinked in a document.

To export a PDF document to word document, you open the PDF document then go under “File”->”Export”->”To MS Office”.

To check a small square box,
    1) If it is an interactive form, you may simply go under “Home”->then switch to “Hand” tool then click on the checkbox to tick.
    2) If it is a non-interactive form, you may try the following to add a check mark: a) Go under “Comment”>”Typewriter” ” >choose “Wingdings 2” font, then press Shift P on the keyboard
    b) Or press Alt 41420 on the Num board.
    c) Or go under “Form”->”checkbox” then add a new checkbox then open Properties->Appearance->set Border Color White. Then switch to Hand tool and click on the checkbox.

Someday this will come in handy when you need to re-order a brochure

At some point or another, you probably have had to edit a PDF file by either moving the pages around, deleting a page or extracting a page or set of pages into a separate PDF file. Recently, I had to change the order of a few PDF pages and extract a different set of pages out into a separate PDF file.

In this article, I’m going to talk about how you can do this using Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro DC. I’ll also mention some free tools you can use to reorganize and extract PDF pages in case you don’t have Adobe Acrobat.

    Move PDF Pages Around

The newest version of Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro makes it really easy to rearrange the order of pages in a PDF file. First, open your PDF file and then click on Tools.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Under Create & Edit, you’ll see the Organize Pages button. You’ll then see a small thumbnail image of all the pages in the PDF file.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

To rotate a page, you simply click on the left or right rotate button. Deleting a page is as easy as clicking on the trash icon for that page. Now, to move a page around or to reorder the PDF pages, simply click and drag a page to the new location. You’ll see a vertical blue bar appear where the page will be dropped.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

That’s all there is to moving pages around in the PDF. On this screen, you can also replace PDF pages with another page from a different PDF file, split the PDF file or insert a PDF file anywhere into the current document.

If you don’t have a subscription to Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro, you can use an online tool from a company called Sejda. Just click on Upload PDF files and you’re good to go. The interface is very similar to the one in Adobe Acrobat. The only limitation is that the file cannot be more than 50 pages or 50 MB in size, but it’s a very generous limit.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

    Extract Pages from PDF File

On the same screen as above, we can also extract pages from the PDF file. If you click on the Extract button in the menu bar, you’ll see another sub-menu appear with a couple of options.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

First, you’re going to want to select the pages in the PDF that you want to extract. To select more than one page, hold down the SHIFT or CTRL keys. SHIFT will select multiple pages in consecutive order whereas CTRL will allow you to pick and choose pages from anywhere in the document.

Once you have selected the files, you can check Delete Pages after extracting or Extract pages as separate files. If you don’t check either option, the selected pages will be extracted into a single PDF file and the pages will remain in the original file.

If you check both, the pages will be removed from the original file and each page will be saved out as a separate PDF file.

Again, if you need to do this for free, you can again use the Sejda website, but this time use their extract PDF tool. Select the pages by just clicking on them or using SHIFT and then click on the Extract Pages button.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

The limit on this tool is up to 200 pages per PDF file or 50 MB in size. It’s pretty much the same as Adobe Acrobat, but it doesn’t give you the option to save each page as a separate PDF file. You can also choose to select all odd or all even pages.

Extracting pages and reordering pages in a PDF are two common tasks that hopefully you will now be able to do quickly using the tools mentioned above. If you have any questions, feel free to comment. Enjoy!

Learn multiple ways to extract images and text out of a PDF file

PDF files are great for exchanging formatted files across platforms and between folks who don’t use the same software, but sometimes we need to take text or images out of a PDF file and use them in web pages, word processing documents, PowerPoint presentations, or in desktop publishing software.

Depending on your needs and the security options set in the individual PDF, you have several options for extracting text, images, or both from a PDF file. Choose the option that works best for you.

Use Adobe Acrobat Professional. If you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat, not just the free Acrobat Reader, you can extract individual images or all images as well as text from a PDF and export in various formats such as EPS, JPG, and TIFF. To extract information from a PDF in Acrobat DC, choose Tools > Export PDF and select an option. To extract text, export the PDF to a Word format or rich text format, and choose from several advanced options that include:

    • Retain Flowing Text
    • Retain Page Layout
    • Include Comments
    • Include Images

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Copy and paste from PDF using Acrobat Reader. If you have Acrobat Reader, you can copy a portion of a PDF file to the clipboard and paste it into another program. For text, just highlight the portion of text in the PDF and press Ctrl + C to copy it.

Then open a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word, and press Ctrl + V to paste the text. With an image, click on the image to select it and then copy and paste it into a program that supports images, using the same keyboard commands.

Open a PDF file in a graphics program. When image extraction is your goal, you can open a PDF in some illustration programs such as newer versions of Photoshop, CorelDRAW, or Adobe Illustrator and save the images for editing and use in desktop publishing applications.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Use third-party PDF extraction software tools. Several standalone utilities and plug-ins are available that convert PDF files to HTML while preserving the page layout, extract and convert PDF content to vector graphics formats, and extract PDF content for use in word processing, presentation, and desktop publishing software. These tools offer varying options including batch extraction/conversion, whole file or partial content extraction, and multiple file format support. These are primarily commercial and shareware Windows-based utilities.

Use online PDF extraction tools. With online extraction tools, you don’t have to download or install the software. How much each one can extract varies. For example, with ExtractPDF.com, you upload a file up to 14MB in size or supply a URL to the PDF for the extraction of images, text or fonts.

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Take a screenshot. Before you take a screenshot of an image in a PDF, enlarge it in its window as much as possible on your screen. On a PC, select the title bar of the PDF window and press Alt + PrtScn. On a Mac, press Command + Shift + 4 and use the cursor that appears to drag and select the area you want to capture.

You may discover that you need to know how to save individual pages from a PDF if you have a very large, or sensitive PDF file, but there is one specific page that you need to send to a contact. Combining multiple pages into one PDF file can be an effective way to share a lot of documents. It reduces the number of files that you need to share, while also allowing you to specify the order in which the pages are viewed. But you may not always need every page of a specific document, and it can be difficult to find a way to separate that single file into multiple smaller ones.

Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro allows you to perform this action using the Extract tool. Our tutorial below will show you where to find this option so that you can create a new, separate file for each page of your PDF document.

How to save 1 Page of a PDF in Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro

The steps in this article were performed using Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro. These steps may be different if you are using a different version of this program. Most recent versions of Acrobat are able to extract pages from multi-page documents, but the exact method for doing so may vary.

Step 1: Open your multi-page PDF in Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro.

Step 2: Click the Tools tab at the top-right corner of the window.

Almost anyone that’s used a PDF editor like Foxit PhantomPDF knows some of the editing options available. However, there are advanced organizing tools available on PDF software like PhantomPDF that can have a dramatic impact on the quality of your PDFs. And if you’re not already using them, you may want to give them a try.

Foxit PhantomPDF comes with built-in functionality to combine multiple PDF files and split a single PDF into single- and multiple-page PDF files according to page numbers as well as page range. That means you can extract exactly the pages you want, or split up a PDF file into just the pages you need.

You can also organize PDF files by re-arranging pages, composing page outlines, and more. PDF software such as Foxit PhantomPDF displays an overview page without any additional software so you can easily see what you’re working on. It allows you to split, merge, and reorganize pages in your PDF document.

Inserting pages from a file (Combining documents)

Foxit PhantomPDF gives you a couple of ways to insert one PDF into another. You can drag and drop pages from one document to another – PhantomPDF allows you to have multiple documents open at once in different tabs. You can also insert an entire PDF file into another PDF file, or insert pages from a paper document using Foxit PhantomPDF and your scanner to scan them in and embed them into your existing PDF document. That makes it easy to customize your PDF document any way you choose and speeds up workflows when you need to combine documents to create a new report, form or brochure.

When you need to re-arrange the order of pages in your PDF file, use the thumbnail view to drag and drop pages. Just expand the thumbnail view on the left hand side and drag and drop – what could be easier? That comes in handy when preparing presentations or reports, as you’re free to decide to move content around until it suits you.

PDF software such as PhantomPDF gives you ways to remove unwanted or blank pages, again enabling you to customize your documents the way you want them. Have pages of information that are no longer relevant? Need to remove pages containing confidential information? The Delete Pages feature makes it easy.

Extraction is the process of reusing selected pages of one PDF in a different PDF. Extracted pages contain not only the content but also all form fields, comments, and links associated with the original page content.

You can leave the extracted pages in the original document and create a new PDF that includes all of the extracted pages during the extraction process – comparable to the familiar processes of cutting and pasting or copying-and-pasting, but on the page level. This makes it exceptionally easy to pull out sections of large PDF documents for use in other documents.

If you need to put a page in where another page in your PDF file is coming out, it’s no problem. With the Replace Page option, you can update a single page simply by replacing it with your updated page in one quick step. The text, images and comments on the original page will be replaced. There’s no need to do anything more.

When you need to transpose placement of two pages in your PDF file, Swap makes it possible. That comes in handy when preparing presentations or reports, as you’re free to decide to move content around until it suits you.

In addition to all these organizational features, you can also duplicate and move pages. What’s more, like good photo editing software , you can even rotate, crop, and flatten pages to embed comments into them permanently, as you would flatten layers using a photo editor.

And all the while, PDF software gives you the universal readability you need, so you can share your PDF documents with virtually anyone.

This feature is in Foxit PhantomPDF Standard or Business, if you are using these versions you would not have these menu options.

I have foxit advanced pdf editor version 3.10 . pl tell me how can I split pages of a pdf file into pdf format. I went to export & tried different options but failed .pl help

    1. FOXITBLOG Post author September 16, 2016 at 1:27 am

Sorry but Advanced Editor does not have this feature as you can only extract pages from a document and not split. This is a feature to split a document is in our Foxit PhantomPDF product. Please download a 30 day trial at

On testing Foxit, I find this deficiency.

When a text page containing form fields is replaced with a text corrected pdf of the same text page, the form fields in the pdf page is seen to vanish. I have seen that this does not happen in the case of Adobe Acrobat. This is the only deficiency that I can see. Other than that Foxit is much superior to Adobe Acrobat.

Thank you for your feedback, please send an example for to [email protected] as our development staff can try this issue.

Using version 8.0.0.624 of Foxit Reader, I received a PDF in e-mail which FR read and displayed fine, but the tab stays blank. I “saved as” and gave it a name, and when I retrieve it using FR, it opens and displays fine, but the tab and the little tooltip box stay blank. If I File->Open, the name appears correctly in Recent Documents; if I then click on that name, it opens OK in FR, but the tab stays blank. I hate to complain about free stuff, but this is a real nuisance.

    1. FOXITBLOG Post author September 16, 2016 at 3:37 am

Can you please test this in 8.0.2? Do you receive the same issue?

I have followed the directions given here and it doesn’t allow me to rearrange pages. I can’t “drag and drop” anything. What am I doing wrong?

How to Extract Pages from a PDF Document to Create a New PDF Document

Once upon a time, desktop computers ran on MS-DOS and creating a document was all about blue screens, blinking cursors, and a series of formatting codes. Back in those days, most attorneys wrote their legal briefs by hand in a notebook that was then turned over to the firm’s “word processing magicians.”

Today, with a few clicks of the mouse, even the most technologically challenged individuals can create highly polished documents. One of the greatest modern conveniences is the ability to manipulate multiple documents into one cohesive masterpiece. For example, we can clip small portions of documentary evidence out of a larger piece and then drop them into a separate document that we’re composing. This practice is especially handy when we need to do things like highlight one clause from a contract within a brief arguing the validity of that contract.

This article explores the process of both merging and splitting up existing PDF documents within two of the most common software platforms (Adobe Acrobat and Nuance).

    Splitting up documents

Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, we combine multiple documents into one PDF file. A good example would be a legal brief that is combined with supporting declarations and the Proof of Service page. While these combined documents can be convenient for internal purposes, they are often rejected by courts. Courts typically want each document filed separately so they can create an appropriate index of each case document online.

In the event you ever need to split up one of these “run on” documents, here’s what you do:

    In Adobe Acrobat:

    1. Open the PDF file that you need to split up using Adobe Reader.
    2. Click on the Tools tab.
    3. Select the Pages option and then choose Split Document.
    4. The Split Document feature allows you to break up a document by selecting a certain number of pages, altering the size of the document, or choosing certain defined bookmarks.
    5. For more details on this process, watch this tutorial video.

    In Nuance:

In recent years, a program called Nuance has started to give industry-leader Adobe Acrobat a run for its money. Since so many firms are now using Nuance for PDF processing, we thought we should provide instructions for that format as well.

    1. Open the PDF file that you need to split up using Nuance.
    2. Choose the “Split Document” option from the PDF Home menu (it appears under the “Tools” group).
    3. An option will pop up that reads “Split by Pages: ____ Pages as a document.” Enter a number indicating how many groups of pages you want to create.
    4. Save the newly split files as individual files.

    Merging documents

It is just as important to be able to merge multiple documents as it is to split them up. Returning to the above example, you might want to combine a legal brief with all the sworn declarations supporting that brief, and then send one combined file to your client or others. Here’s how you make that happen.

    In Adobe Acrobat:

    1. Open Adobe Reader and select the Tools menu.
    2. Click on Combine Files and then select Add Files.
    3. Choose the files that you want to combine into one PDF.
    4. You can rearrange the files into the appropriate order by selecting a file, then dragging and dropping it into place.
    5. Once you have all files in the correct order, select Combine Files.
    6. Don’t forget to Save your new file under a new name.

If you are more of a visual learner, you can watch a video tutorial on the process here.

    In Nuance:

Nuance uses a feature called “Document Assembly” for merging multiple. PDF documents into one piece. Here’s how the process works:

    1. Choose the Document Assembly option from the PDF Home menu (it appears under the “Pages” group).
    2. Select one or more pages of an existing PDF.
    3. Drag and drop those pages where you want them in the new document.
    4. You can right-click on any place within the new document to insert, replace, or remove pages as you see fit.
    5. Once again, don’t forget to save the new document!

    Keep in mind

One thing to remember is that anytime you manipulate a PDF document in the ways discussed in this article, you’re likely to lose any text-search capabilities that existed within the original. Therefore, it is critical that you re-OCR your new documents to return those capabilities. For more information on that process, check out One Legal’s prior article on the topic.

Your final PDFs that are uploaded to LSC Pontiac InSite need to be in single page format. That is each page needs to be saved as a separate PDF file and named for it’s page folio. This is necessary in order to ensure that the pages are imposed in the proper order. It is possible to repeat the steps in the methods above to produce single page PDFs one at a time however that can be time consuming and tedious especially for magazines with a large number of pages. Alternatively there is a way to use the methods above to create a multipage PDF from which you can separate into correctly named single page PDFs. To do this you can use two tools you probably already have at your disposal. You can use Adobe Acrobat to open the multipage PDF and extract pages from it into single page PDF files. After the pages are separated you can use Adobe Bridge to batch rename the pages in a single step. Here is you you can do it.

How to extract single page PDFs from a multipage PDF using Adobe Acrobat (6, 7, 8, 9)

It is strongly recommended that you upload single page PDFs to InSite. Uploading single page PDFs, each properly named for it’s folio will ensure that pages are properly imposed in the correct sequence. • Individual pages or a range of pages can be pulled out of the current document into a separate file or group of files. The process does not alter the original document, so it can be performed on PDFs that have been certified and/or digitally signed. It cannot be performed on PDF/A documents, however.

Note: PDFs that have been certified cannot have pages extracted. Additionally, extracting pages that have been digitally signed, but not certified, will remove the signatures from the extracted pages.

    1. Go to Document > Pages > Extract Pages.
      • Alternatively, select the desired pages on the Thumbnails Tab, then right-click one of them and select Extract Pages.

The Extract Pages dialog box appears.

Select the Page Range to be extracted from the Pages menu. By default, the page that is currently active or the selected thumbnails (if the Thumbnails tab method was used) are selected.

    • All Pages: Sets the range to all pages.
    • Current: Sets the range to the current page only. The current page number will appear in parentheses, for example, Current (2) if page 2 is the current page.
    • Selected: Sets the range to the current selection. This option only appears if pages were selected prior to invoking the command.
    • Custom: Sets the range to a custom value. When this option is selected the list becomes a text box. To enter a custom range:
      • Use a dash between page numbers to define those two pages and all pages in between.
      • Use a comma to define pages that are separated.

      For example: 1-3, 5, 9 will include pages 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9.

Delete Pages After Extracting: Select to remove the pages from the current PDF. The pages will be permanently removed from the current PDF. This option is not available if the PDF has been certified or digitally signed.

Use Page Label to Name Files: Select to use the page label in the name of the individual PDFs.

Note: This option should not be used if the page labels contain any characters that Windows considers invalid for use in file names, including / : * ? ” |

    • Overwrite Existing Files: Overwrites any existing files of the same name in the save location.
  • Open Files After Extraction: Select to open the newly created PDFs in the current session of Revu as separate document tabs.
  • Update hyperlinks with relative paths: Select to automatically update hyperlinks contained in extracted pages with relative paths. Otherwise, full paths are used. See Defining an Action: Relative and Full Paths for more information regarding relative and full paths.
  • Click OK.
    • If any of the pages to be extracted have been digitally signed, a dialog box will appear warning that those signatures will be automatically cleared on the extracted pages. Click OK to proceed.
