Emoji convey emotions and reactions when words just can’t cut it. There are hundreds of emoji to choose from, but what if you could mash them together and create new ones? That’s exactly what Gboard can do.
The Gboard feature is called “Emoji Kitchen” and, at this writing, it’s available only on Android. There’s a chance it will come to iPhone and iPad later, but Google has yet to confirm availability.
The feature allows you to select pairs of emoji and mash them together. It also suggests random pairings with some hilarious and bizarre results.
First, you’ll need an Android phone or tablet and the Gboard keyboard app. You’ll also need to set Gboard as your default keyboard.
Next, navigate to an app that allows you to share images. The Emoji Kitchen feature doesn’t support all apps (like Slack), but it typically works with messengers and social media apps, like Twitter and Facebook.
With the keyboard open, tap the Emoji icon left of the space bar.
If the app supports Emoji Kitchen, you’ll see a blank canvas at the top of the keyboard.
Select the first emoji you want for your mash-up. A few will auto-generate and appear in the Emoji Kitchen section.
Select the second emoji, and your custom mash-up will appear at the left of the top section, with more suggestions on the right. If you select the same emoji twice, you’ll get an “intensified” version.
Select the mash-up you want to use, and it will appear in the text box so you can share it.
The Emoji Kitchen creations aren’t actually emoji; they’re “stickers” created by Gboard. So, sharing a mash-up is the same as sharing an image.
As we mentioned previously, the behavior of Emoji Kitchen is dependent on the app you’re using. What you see might not be exactly the same as the images above if the app doesn’t support the features.

It’s quite easy to create your own emoji mashups using the Gboard app. Follow the below steps:
- If you haven’t received the update for Emoji Kitchen on Gboard, register for the Gboard beta from here.
- Now, update the app.
- Open one of the eligible apps such as Gmail, WhatsApp, Telegram and more.
- Now click on create a message and then click on Gboard’s emoji icon.
- Now, tap on an emoji and you can see various mashups.
The mashups shown at the top include the emoji selected by you and other emojis. At present, users will not be able to select their emojis for mashup.
Do note that for some emojis such as fire, there are no mashups at present. If you tap the fire emoji, you will get the following message – ‘No suggestions here. try a different emoji.’

How to create your own Gboard emoji mashups
- First things first, if you haven’t already, go to the Google Play Store to download, install, and set to default the Gboard on your phone right now. Pixel owners will have it installed as the default keyboard.
- Open a messaging that you frequently type in, like Google Messages.
- Tap on the emoji icon at the bottom of the screen, to the left of the spacebar.
- Select an emoji from the emoji picker. You should see some larger and different versions of your emoji in the section above the emoji picker.

Steps to Create Your Own Mini Emoji in Gboard:
1] Open an app where you can use Gboard, be it the SMS app or WhatsApp. Make sure to update the app if using a too old version.
2] Once Gboard pops up, tap the Stickers icon on the top row.
Can’t see the stickers button? Tap the emoji icon next to the space bar or long-press the comma and select emoji. Then, tap on the stickers icon.
3] Tap the “+” button and press Add next to Minis.
4] Grant it camera permissions and click a selfie. Please wait for it to analyze your face.
5] Within seconds, Gboard will design a set of personalized stickers that can be used from within the keyboard app.
6] To customize the stickers, open your minis tab in Gboard’s stickers section, scroll down to the bottom, and tap Customize. You can then change hair size, color, face shape, eye shape, eyebrows, nose, facial hair, eyeglasses, and more.

How to change emojis on Gboard with the Emoji Kitchen
1. Open your messaging app of choice. Keep in mind that not all messaging apps are compatible with the Emoji Kitchen. For the purposes of this guide, we’ll use Facebook Messenger.
2. Tap on the user to whom you want to send an emoji to open a conversation with them, and then tap the text bar to start typing.
3. Tap on the icon that resembles a smiley face to pull up your emojis.
4. Tap on the emoji of your choice. Stickers with possible emoji combinations will appear in the space above the keyboard. This space is the Emoji Kitchen.
5. Swipe through the stickers in the Emoji Kitchen and tap on the one you want to send. The sticker that you tap will be sent as soon as you tap on it.
