How to combine multiple subreddits with multireddits

By Ava Barnes

If you’re subscribed to a lot of communities on Reddits, some of the content you want to see may get lost in the mix. For easier browsing, you can make your own “multireddit” that combines posts from multiple subreddits into one feed.

What Are Multireddits?

At first glance, the front page of Reddit can be a little bit overwhelming to scroll through—especially if you’re part of a lot of random subreddits. For example, you might be seeing important breaking news in between memes and funny pictures of cats, which may not be the ideal reading experience. It’s also hard to filter down the types of posts you want to see unless you go to a specific subreddit. However, there are a lot of subreddits that have similar types of content.

Multireddits, or “multis,” is a feature that allows Redditors to combine multiple subreddits into one page for easy reading. It works very similarly to how RSS news aggregators work. For example, if you want to browse the headlines of the day aggregated from multiple subreddits with different kinds of news, you can make a multireddit that combines r/News, r/WorldNews, r/Technology, r/Sports, and r/Entertainment.

Multireddits are also a great way to sort your favorite feeds into groups of similar subreddits. Instead of going into subreddits one by one, you’ll see the newest and most upvoted posts from all of them. Multireddits are also a good way to see posts from subs that you’re not subscribed to.

Making a Multireddit

To make a multireddit, you need to be using the old version of the Reddit website. To do this, go to User Settings > Account, and toggle “Opt Out Of The Redesign,” which will make the old version the default. You can also access old Reddit at old.reddit.com.

Update: You can also create “custom feeds” in the new Reddit interface. This is the new name for multireddits.

On the left side of your home page, there will be an expanding menu where you’ll see a list of default multireddits you’re subscribed to. Click “Create” and type in the preferred name for your multi. For this example, we’ll call our multi “Technology.” You’ll be redirected to your multi’s page. From here, you can set the multi to public or private visibility.

Then, you can type in which subreddits will go in it. Simply type in the name of the subreddit in the text box and click the “+” button to add it to your multi. In the following example, you’ll see we added r/Apple, r/Android, r/Technology, and r/PCMasterRace to our multi. They will immediately be visible on the page when you add them.

How to combine multiple subreddits with multireddits

There’s another way to make a multi without having to use the old version of Reddit. A subreddit’s normal URL follows the format is “ followed by the name of the sub. You can combine multiple subs into a link for a multireddit by adding “+” between every subreddit name. For example, “ will lead you to a multi with both r/News and r/WorldNews.

However, this way of making a multi does not allow you to give it a custom name. There’s also no way to access it directly from your Reddit home page, so you’ll need to bookmark the link to access it later on.

Adding Other Multireddits

Like subreddits, you can also add Multireddits that other users make and have left publicly accessible. They will appear in your left sidebar in old Reddit, and you can customize them just like the ones that you made yourself.

If you’re on old Reddit, to follow one, go to the multireddit owner’s profile page. On the left side, you’ll see a box that says, “Public Multireddits.” When you access one of these, click “Make A Copy,” then you can browse through or customize that multireddit as much as you see fit. You can also read the multireddit straight from the user’s profile.

You can also share your multis with others in the same way. As long as a multireddit you’ve made is public, other people can make their copies of it and have it appear on their left sidebar.

Great Ways to Use Multireddits

One of the best things about multireddits is that you can browse the content you want without overwhelming your subscription list. For example, there are thousands of subreddits dedicated to cats. Therefore, a cat-loving Reddit user has made several multireddits that aggregate many of the best ones, so you’ll have an unlimited stream of feline photos without having 100 cat-related subreddits cluttering your home feed.

Like we mentioned earlier, this is also an excellent way to browse the news in a specific niche. For example, the most active sports subs are only focused on a single sport. For example, if you’re a fan of multiple sports and you want to see coverage on all of them, you may wish to combine r/NBA, r/NFL, and r/hockey into one feed.

Custom Feeds allow users to combine multiple subreddits into one customizable feed. Many users use Custom Feeds to group together subreddits of a similar topic. For example, you can group r/fitness, r/running, and r/cycling under a custom title “Fitness”, or r/Gaming, r/leagueoflegends, and r/Minecraft under “Gaming”. You can keep your Custom Feeds private for your own use, or make them public to share in communities like r/multireddits.

To create a Custom Feed, you’ll have to visit the subreddit page, and look for the overflow menu ( ) > “Add To Custom Feed” > and “Create A Custom Feed” to assign it a name.

If you’re using Old Reddit, look for the thin gray bar on the left edge of the screen on the home page. Click it, and a menu will open. Click “create” under “Multireddits” and you’ll be taken to a page when you can add subreddits by searching for them in the box on the left and clicking on the plus symbol when you find one you like.

On iOS, go to your Subscriptions tab and tap on the Custom Feeds tab. From here you can create a new Custom Feed by first giving it a name, and then adding subreddits to the new feed you’ve just created.

We’ll be adding support for Custom Feeds on Android in the near future.

When you sign up on Reddit you get a boatload of new privileges on the site. This includes participation in the comment system, the option to vote for posts, or the fantastic option to customize the start page of the service by subscribing to subreddits you are interested in, and unsubscribing from those that you do not want to be represented on your start page.

If you do not sign in to your account or do not have an account, for whatever reason, you are left with the standard selection of popular subreddits on the start page. This includes the several image groups that are usually well represented, as well as other groups that you may or may not be interested in at all.

What you may not know is that it is possible to create so called multi pages on Reddit. It is basically a mix of several subreddits that you specify. This multi group is displayed like the start page on Reddit, but with the advantage that you do not have to sign in to access it.

Multi Groups on Reddit

How to combine multiple subreddits with multireddits

To create your first multi group on Reddit, do the following:

  1. Use the web address as your base.
  2. Add the first group at the end of it just like you would do normally, e.g.
  3. Instead of tapping on the enter key to load it, append a + character after the group name and add a second group to it, e.g.
  4. You have created your first multi group.

You can load that group right away, or add more groups to it using the same system (always separate with a plus character followed by the group name.

All selected groups share the same hot, new, rising, controversial and top listings based on Reddit’s algorithm.

Note : Multi groups are not saved by default. The best course of action in my opinion is to add them to the bookmarks, or keep the page that displays it open at all times in your web browser of choice.

Handy side note : Imgur uses the very same system. Use as your base url. Add picture groups to it to display them all at once on the site, e.g.

Closing Words

The multi feature on Reddit may come in handy if you do not want to sign up on the site, or cannot sign in at the time, for instance if you are using a public computer that you do not trust.

How to combine multiple subreddits with multireddits

Reddit today announced it is launching multireddits, a feature that lets you build your own front pages by combining multiple subreddits. If you’re a Gold member, you can check out the beta now at /r/multibeta.

Multireddits, or multis for short, have been around for years, but only in the form of custom URLs (like /r/space+nasa+astronomy). Now Reddit says it wants to make multis “as ubiquitous and powerful as subreddits.” The company says it has spent the past six months working on making multis easier to create and share, and it hopes they will be key to ensuring the community continues to thrive.

In the company’s own words:

If subreddits give you the power to create your own reddit community, then multireddits give you the power to create your own public reddit front pages, each with their own selections of subreddits. In the process of curating and sharing these different front pages, there lies the potential to breathe life into smaller, more specific communities, because you can now participate in an order of magnitude more of them.

Reddit says subreddits played a massive role in giving its users the ability to create an entirely new community with whatever focus they wanted. Yet all this growth has made it difficult to organize and keep track of all the subreddits each user is interested in – the company hopes multis will help address this issue.

How to combine multiple subreddits with multireddits

Again, multis are still in beta. Reddit admits there are missing features and opportunities in this first release, but it plans “many more betas” and to eventually open source the code on GitHub. The plan is to make it as easy as possible for the site’s users to help shape the new feature.

Reddit today also revealed some interesting figures regarding its growth. A day after its eighth birthday, there were 5,487 active subreddits. In May, the site saw over 71 million unique visitors. Later this year, the company is expecting to surpass 5 billion pageviews per month.

Clearly Reddit hopes multis can push it onwards to 10,000 subreddits, 100 million unique visitors, and 10 billion pageviews per month. We’ll keep you posted if and when those milestones are reached.

After two months of beta testing, Reddit released a new feature called “multireddits,” which allows users to view specific, customized groups of subreddits as opposed to the default front page. Reddit administrator chromakode announced the feature in a blog post that generated nearly 2,000 comments — most of which are negative.

How to combine multiple subreddits with multiredditsImage: Reddit

Multireddits can be started, viewed and customized through a new sidebar located on the left edge of the front page. Many of the announcement’s top comments detail complaints about the feature’s obtrusiveness, though the new sidebar is easily hidden by clicking the arrow on its right edge. Regardless, a few users have already found and posted multiple methods for disabling the feature completely.

This isn’t the first time the Reddit community has reacted poorly to change. When the site gave users the ability to comment on submissions, many decried the innovation, citing its uselessness and leaving comments like “get rid of them” and “noooooooooooooo.” Today, comments are arguably the community’s main draw, allowing users to discuss current events and participate in crowdsourcing.

In response to comments, the Reddit admin revealed that developers would soon add the ability to order multireddits in the sidebar and follow other users’ multireddits.

After a few upgrades, multireddits should be incredibly useful. They certainly add efficiency to browsing the site; users will no longer have to create new accounts or insert lengthy URLs to view certain subreddit clusters.

Creating a multireddit is very simple. In the new sidebar, click the “create” button. After titling the multireddit, you will be directed to another page to group together subreddits. When finished, the new multireddit will be accessible via the sidebar. For a few example groupings, take a look at ours here and here. Many more user-generated groupings can be found on /r/multihub.

What do you think of multireddits? Will it change the way you use the site? Tell us in the comments below.

Because those attributes are subject to change on Reddit’s end, PRAW makes no effort to document them, other than to instruct you on how to discover what is available. See Determine Available Attributes of an Object for detailed information.

Reddit is taking a small “evolutionary step” today, with the launch of multireddits in beta.

Of course, reddit users know that you’ve been able to construct multireddits (pages of multiple subreddits) for years. That involves chaining together a bunch of subreddits in a custom URL, for instance “ and so on. With the launch of multireddits, reddit wants to make them “as ubiquitous and powerful as subreddits” – basically making them easier to find and share.

Here’s what reddit has to say in a blog post:

If subreddits give you the power to create your own reddit community, then multireddits give you the power to create your own public reddit front pages, each with their own selections of subreddits. We have reached the point where one front page can’t do reddit justice. So let’s make 9000! This functionality has been around for years in the form of creating custom URLs like /r/space+nasa+astronomy, but the goal is to make these distinct slices of reddit as ubiquitous and powerful as subreddits. In the process of curating and sharing these different front pages, there lies the potential to breathe life into smaller, more specific communities, because you can now participate in an order of magnitude more of them.

You can check out all the multireddit talk over at r/multibeta – but only if you’re a reddit gold member.

Reddit has been working on the project for about 6 months, and today they’re finally letting more users in on the fun.

“We can’t do this alone. It is our hope to directly involve the community in building and exploring these new tools for structuring and browsing reddit. What we have been working on is only version 0 of multireddits. There are tons of missing features and missed opportunities that will be evident in the first release. And as we hack our way towards version 1, there will be many more betas to take part in.”

Reddit knows it’s huge, and with that comes an inevitable logjam of information. Multireddits will help users sort through it all and develop communities that they really care about. Reddit says that they had 71 million unique visitors last month, who participated in 5,487 active subreddits.

5 Tips for Using Reddit More Effectively

Feel intimidated by the huge social media platform? Don’t be. Here are some hints and tricks for the newbie and veteran alike.

By Daniel Reed

Reddit calls itself the front page of the internet for a good reason: This site has made it to the top 100 in Alexa Global Rank and it has 430 million monthly users. Reddit has overwhelming amounts of content on virtually any topic. Given that Redditors post content every hour, you can always get tons of interesting information about anything. Just start using Reddit, and you will immediately feel at home.

Reddit has lots of subreddits dedicated to the latest news and political discussions. There are hundreds of different communities offering fashion advice, recipes, funny memes and videos, and a lot more interesting things. Reddit is truly a great place to procrastinate! However, there are a lot of truly helpful educational subreddits, too. Students can get help with their essays and other assignments or access thousands of free video lectures. Reddit has a little something for everyone.

However, navigating through thousands of subreddits, all of which look different from each other may be a challenge. The amounts of information available on this website don’t make it easier to use. Therefore, if you’re looking for a seamless experience, then chances are that you won’t find it here. In fact, people who see Reddit for the first time often feel confused and disappointed. However, you can use Reddit much more effectively. We hope that our simple tips will help you use this platform better so that you can get the best experience possible.

1. Search for subreddits

The abundance of information is the first thing that repels some users because they feel overloaded. However, if Reddit seems a bit overwhelming, you only need to better understand it. All the content on Reddit belongs to various subreddits, and each subreddit is dedicated to a particular topic. You will certainly love Reddit if you just find subreddits that correspond to your interests. You can search for subreddits if you click “More” in the My Subreddits bar.

There are two search bars. The first one will quickly suggest subreddits based on a keyword, while the second is intended for a more in-depth search, showing all the relevant subreddits.

2. Use the r/Random to find something new

If you’ve already subscribed to a bunch of subreddits and now you just want to check out something completely different, you can always use the r/Random. It will lead you to a random subreddit. However, keep in mind that this random subreddit can be not safe for work (NSFW) so you should be careful when opening r/Random in public places.

You can also discover new content when browsing subreddits that are already in the list of your subscriptions. The thing is that Reddit allows you to sort content by the newest, the most controversial or the hottest. However, the best way to use sorting is the Top. Click it and you’ll be able to sort content from the best of the hour, month, week or the best ever.

3. Create multireddits

If you’re tired of switching between different subreddits, you can group them and view all of them on the same page. Multireddits allow you to group subreddits on similar topics so that you won’t need to go to each page individually.

To create a multireddit, log in and click “Create” under Multireddits, on the left side of the page. Choose a name for a new multireddit and select subreddits. You can also create multireddits on-the-go by using a URL that looks like this: “ where A and B are names of subreddits. You can also add more subreddits by adding another “+.”

4. Get live updates on comments

If you want to keep up with the latest comments in real-time, you can use Reddit Stream, which will show you comments in the form of a chronological timeline. Reddit Stream looks similar to a chat log, as all the comments appear there as soon as users post them. You can access it by adding “-stream” to a URL when you’re in the comments section. The URL will look like this: “ Reddit Stream is especially useful if you have an extremely popular AMA topic or when covering events in real-time.

5. Install Reddit Enhancement Suite

You can make Reddit even more convenient if you install Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). Many Redditors use it and agree that this tool is a must. It enables you to log in from multiple accounts, includes an endless scrollable front page, an in-line image viewer, and many other features. This tool offers a completely new experience, in fact, it provides some features of Reddit Gold for free. RES is compatible with all the common browsers.

Wrapping Up

Reddit is an extremely popular platform that contains lots of information on different topics. However, its design may be a bit confusing for people who see it for the first time. New users often cannot figure out how to navigate Reddit effectively. Although this website doesn’t provide a seamless experience, you can improve it a lot if you follow our simple tips. Just type a few words here and there in the address bar, and you will see that Reddit is much better than it seems.
