How has Harlem been rated?
Several days after the premiere, Harlem is receiving mixed to favourable ratings from both fans and critics alike.
At the time of writing, season 1 is scoring an underwhelming 6.2/10 on IMDB, but an impressive 80% on MetaCritic and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Indie Wire praises Harlem and says that it “pulses with heart and vigor” with “sharp, fun interplay between is four formidable leads.” Culminating in a solid B+ rating, the review explains that “despite some early slip-ups, Oliver’s ‘Harlem’ resonates with fun, heart, verve, and the feeling of togetherness.”
The cast was in the spotlight on Variety too, who agree that the “core four ‘Harlem’ friends have a rapport that makes them easy to hang out with.” However, scriptwriting was again the focus of the negatives, with “expository dialogue that sounds unnatural when spoken aloud.”
Entertainment Weekly score Harlem an A-, echoing similar sentiments to the previously mentioned reviews. EW explain how “at times the plotting can be trite” but that the series overall is “consistently enjoyable” over its 10-episode run.
“This show checks all my boxes for a must watch series! 1. Hilarious 2. Great storyline 3. Dope cast 4. All around fun watch. 5. Only thing I don’t like is now I’ve got to wait for a season 2.” – User ‘Rey44’ via IMDB.

Creator talks Run the World…
The creator of Harlem, the brilliant Tracy Oliver, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the series and its comparison to Starz’ Run the World.
The latter show, Run the World, also follows four similar-aged Black women living in Harlem; however, Oliver believes that people comparing the two was ‘inevitable’.
“When there’s another Black show, people either reduce it down to the same thing, as if two creators can’t have totally different experiences, and points of views, and voices, or they try to pit you against them and make it competitive. And either version of that I’m so against.” – Tracy Oliver, via EW.
Oliver goes on to explain how it’s “a sign of progress that you don’t just have one show anymore that features Black women who are friends.”
So seeing some debate & heres the thing. #RunTheWorld was great (hoping for season 2). #HarlemOnPrime is great so far. Both can coexist & be great & neither has to show black women struggling. Both can continue to show black women, living & thriving, successful & figuring it out
