Freddy Smith Obituary-Death News; The Southern Gentleman, a Race Car Driver, Passed Away From Leukaemia

A well-known American dirt-track racer has died. Freddy Smith, “The Southern Gentleman,” a racing legend, passed away on Saturday due to complications from leukaemia. Freddy’s son Jeff claims that after fighting pneumonia at the hospital, he was declared dead.

According to Jeff, the family wanted to let everyone know the tragic news in an effort to stop rumours after their father’s diagnosis.

“Leukaemia (AML) has been identified as his disease. Since we learned of this two and a half weeks ago, he has already undergone one round of chemotherapy. He is currently fighting pneumonia. I want to express my gratitude for everyone’s prayers for my unsaid request from a few weeks ago. That was for my Dad, who is actually my hero, wrote Jeff.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of The Southern Gentleman Freddy Smith tonight. His son Jeff informed people of his passing. Freddy was a member of the first class of the NDLMHoF. His influence on our sport and his efforts are incalculable.

The entire dirt racing community will sadly miss him. We at the NDLMHoF would like to send Miss Naomi, Jeff, Zach, and the entire Smith family our sincere sympathies. Just a few of the images from our collection are shown here. Add yours in the comments if you’d like.
