The cause of actor Evan Ellingson’s death has been determined to be an accident.

An unintentional fentanyl overdose claimed the life of the actor, who gained notoriety for his performance opposite Cameron Diaz in the 2009 drama picture “My Sister’s Keeper,” a representative for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department coroner informed media outlets on Tuesday.

The information was released over a month after Ellingson, 35, killed unexpectedly at home in Fontana, California. Throughout his life, Ellingson battled drug addiction, and according to his father Michael, who spoke with TMZ, his son was residing in a sober-living home.

Ellingson had not been in front of the camera for more than ten years at the time of his passing. Aside from “My Sister’s Keeper,” which also featured Jason Patrick, Abigail Breslin, and Alec Baldwin, Ellingson is well-known for his recurrent part on “CSI: Miami.” He spent three years and eighteen episodes as Kyle Harmon in the procedural broadcast series.

Ellingson began his television career at the age of thirteen. He first appeared as a guest on “General Hospital” and went on to play the nephew of Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer in the series “24,” “Titus,” “That Was Then,” “Mad TV,” “Complete Savages,” and “Bones.”
