Doctor Who: Russell T Davies Returning as Showrunner

By Matthew Martinez

In celebration of Doctor Who‘s anniversary, BBC has announced that Russell T Davies will be returning as the nest season’s showrunner.

According to a post on Doctor Who’s official website, Davies will be returning to create the 60th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who in 2023 “and series beyond”. He will be replacing the current showrunner, Chris Chibnall, who still has a season left to complete. Chibnall will be exiting the series along with the current Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

“I’m beyond excited to be back on my favorite show,” said Davies. “But we’re time-traveling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”

Chris Chibnall commented on Davies’ return:

It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him  – Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.”

After being off the air for over 15 years, Davies played a huge role in bringing Doctor Who back into the spotlight back in 2005. He acted as showrunner for over four seasons and a handful of special episodes. His reign included David Tenet’s and Christopher Eccleston’s portrayal of the Doctor, which are some of the most beloved by fans.

The revival of Doctor Who is available on HBO Max. The 13th season is set to begin later this year after being delayed due to COVID-19.
