Angel Dugard was born as a result of a rape

Angel Dugard was born in August of 1994 to Jaycee, who was just 13 years old at the time and had been kidnapped and held captive by Phillip Garrido since she was 11. While Garrido is technically Angel’s biological father, his relationship with Jaycee was one of captor and captive. During her years in captivity, Jaycee suffered years of rape and abuse at the hands of Garrido. When she became pregnant with Angel, she was only given painkillers and shown some birth videos before being forced to give birth alone. Due to these traumatic circumstances surrounding her birth, Angel did not have the opportunity to attend a formal school and instead received her education through homeschooling from her mother.

Angel’s mother was kidnapped from the bus stop

An eleven-year-old girl was reported missing at a bus stop near Lake Tahoe in 1991. Although it was not initially disclosed who abducted her, it was later revealed that she had been kidnapped by a criminal named Phillip Garrido. Garrido has a heinous criminal history. Prior to Dugard’s case, he served 15 years in prison for harassment. According to reports, he raped women for 8 hours in a rented warehouse container. He also married childhood friend Christine Murphy, whom he kidnapped after she threatened to leave him because of his abusive behavior. Phillip, a kidnapper, serial rapist, pedophile and hebephile, was later labeled as a “sexual deviant and chronic drug abuser” by a 1976 court ruling.

Angel’s mother is finally freed after 18 years

The Dugards were finally rescued in 2009 after Phillip began showing up at the University of California, Berkeley with his alleged daughters Angel and Starlet. Phillip’s strange behavior and activities drew the attention of the university police, who became suspicious upon interacting with him. Upon investigation, it was revealed that he was a convicted sex offender on parole. Further investigation proved that Phillip had no daughter as reported in his previous conviction documents.

This led to further investigation, culminating in Phillip’s surrender on August 26, 2009. He was ultimately convicted of one count of kidnapping and thirteen counts of sexual assault, resulting in a sentence of 431 years in prison. Meanwhile, his wife, who was also complicit in the kidnapping, received a sentence of 36 years behind bars. When questioned about why Jaycee never attempted to escape during her captivity, she revealed that she had been subjected to physical abuse and mental manipulation by Phillip. He convinced her that if she fled he would abduct other girls – something she didn’t want.

What is Angel Dugard up to these days?

Angel has lived a normal life for just over a year. She had to undergo a lot of counseling after being rescued from the kidnapper’s hands to get over the trauma she, her sister and mother went through. She is currently living a happy but low-key life.
